Vacation Bible School At Revival Community Church

A summer kids’ event called Rocky Railway VBS will be hosted at Revival Community Church of Danville, 1475 East Main Street, Danville, from July 8, 2021, through July 10, 2021.

At Rocky Railway, kids discover through life’s ups and downs that Jesus’ power pulls us through. Kids participate in memorable Bible-learning activities, sing catchy songs, play teamwork-building games, engage in fun snack-eating experiences, take part in one-of-a-kind Bible Adventures, collect Bible Memory Buddies to remind them to trust Jesus, and test out Sciency-Fun Gizmos they’ll take home and play with all summer long. Plus, kids will learn to look for evidence of God all around them through something called God Sightings.

The last 30 minutes of each day concludes with the Rocky Wrap-Up that gets everyone involved in living what they’ve learned. Family members and friends are encouraged to join in daily for this special time.

Rocky Railway is for kids from ages 5 through 12. July 8 and 9 activities will begin at 6 p.m. and run to 8:30 p.m. Saturday, July 10, the festivities will begin at 10 a.m. and conclude by 2:30 p.m. For more information, call (317) 408-6908.

Following a Family Tradition at The Fudge Kettle

The Fudge Kettle offers custom made goodies

By Melissa Gibson

Andrea Snyder grew up in Martinsville, working weekends and school breaks at her grandparents Brown County candy and gift shop.

“As a child, I always thought I’d have a candy store when I grew up,” Snyder said. “That’s not something you go to college for. It was just in the back of my mind and I thought it would never amount to a hill of beans.”

As an adult, she was a paralegal for 12 years and the job was taking its toll.

ANDREA SNYDER

“I saw people in the worst times of their lives. You’re getting a divorce, fighting for custody of your children, and filing bankruptcy. Not everyone was nice; they were frustrated and it’s a serious thing to be fighting for your children. I was burned out and it was almost making me sick,” Snyder said.

She began thinking about her grandparent’s homemade fudge and found solace in spending time in the kitchen on her days off – a hobby she did on the side.

“It just so happened that [my family] was in Hawaii when the virus hit and we had actually been talking about those days of fudge in the candy store. It’s just something ingrained in your memory,” Snyder said.

Back home, Snyder was working remotely, her son was doing school remotely, her husband had been laid off of his job and she found herself still trying to get work done in the middle of the night.

“I needed something different. I wanted to be close to home, I was checked out at work. I started checking on kettles for sale and found someone going out of business and my mom and I drove to pick up this kettle. I ordered a bunch of fudge mix and started a Facebook page, asking friends and family what flavors they liked,” Snyder said.

The reception was positive and Snyder set about taking orders, making fudge and doing a porch pickup service.

“When I posted my first batch for sale, I just sat on the couch and wept,” Snyder said. “This was working! I always thought this was a side hobby for some extra money, but I was an emotional wreck, I was going to walk away from my job, and I was unsure if I could do this or not.”

The home business took off and Snyder spent the summer of 2020 at various farmers markets, often times selling out of her fudge mid-way through the market hours.

“It was a huge success. People were just loving it because you couldn’t get it anywhere else. My mom and husband are the ones that said, ‘you need to chase this, you need a store front’ and I just thought it was unattainable. I’d have to have a business plan, insurance, employees. I’d never ran a business before, but they said, ‘if you fall, you fall, but you need to take the chance’.” They were right. Snyder opened The Fudge Kettle on Aug. 22, 2020, at 5530 E. U.S. Highway 36, Suite 250, Avon and has been growing ever since.

“It turned out; it wasn’t scary at all. It’s gone so well, we’re out of room and looking to move and expand. I’m ready to offer more handmade items, roasted nuts and other gift options,” Snyder said.

Walking into the store, customers are taken back to the old-fashioned candy store, where you can find PEZ candy, cocoa bombs, gummies, taffy, jellybeans, rock candy and lemon drops.

At The Fudge Kettle, customers can pre-order special flavors or treats for a party, gift or holiday celebration. They can also stop by to check out the many, rotating flavors each day, from Chocolate Mint, Peanut Butter, Cookies and Cream, Chocolate and Maple Pecan among many others.

They have specialty items such as fudge dipped pretzels for Teacher’s Appreciation Day and a Fudge Tie for Father’s Day. In addition, local artisans stock t-shirts, mugs, crocheted animals, handmade cards and ornaments at the store, making the location a one-stop-shop for gifts and special events.

“The community has been so receptive and supportive of the business and I’m grateful,” Snyder said. “I feel like there was an obvious need for a store like mine, filled with fun candies and homemade fudge. A lot of people call it ‘vacation fudge’ because you typically only find it in tourist areas.”

As for Snyder’s 89-year-old grandfather, she says he’s “tickled pink” and loves hearing about her store and how it’s progressing.

You can see the note he wrote Snyder during the opening of her store, displayed in poster form at the shop.

“Dear Andrea, I am so proud that you are now making fudge like Grandma and I used to do. Like carrying on a tradition in the family. Grandma would have loved this as I do now. Love, Grandpa.”
