Hendricks County Homemakers’ display at the Home and Family Purdue Extension 107th State Conference used the “I CAN - U CAN 2” theme.
Plan on going to the Hendricks County 4-H Fair, July 18-14? You CAN get free tickets in exchange for donations of CANs of food (5 cans = 1 ticket).
2021 is the International Year of Fruits & Vegetables and Hendricks County Homemakers will be sponsoring several events throughout the Fair with the theme, “I CAN - U CAN 2.”
One of those events will be a contest to build an exhibit with clean, empty CANS, which can be tin, aluminum, plastic, etc. Local merchant gift cards totaling over $500 will be awarded by Hendricks County Recycling, who is sponsoring the contest.
The displays must contain 50% clean, empty cans without paper labels, self-supporting, with a minimum height of 3 feet. Examples of themes could be animals, tables, statues, tin-men, etc. The completed displays may be brought to the Fairgrounds on July 16, between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. Categories will be Kids 5-13; Groups and/or clubs; Businesses. Food collected during the Fair will go to the Hendricks County Food Pantry Coalition to be distributed to food pantries throughout the county.
Music on the Square
For the 14th year, Danville’s Historic Court House Square will become the backdrop for the Downtown Danville Partnership’s live concert series, Summer Sounds on the Square. This year marks the return of one of the artists from the first year of the series.
Summer Sounds For 2021
n the third Saturday of June, July, August and September, the court house square turns into an outdoor concert venue. The schedule for 2021 is:
● June 19 - Cornfield Mafia - A blend of downhome country music mixed with classic rock and soul and a little story-telling thrown in.
● July 17 - Jennie DeVoe Legendary Indy blues singer-songwriter returns to Summer Sounds for an unforgettable evening. DeVoe was on the schedule of the first Summer Sounds series in 2008.
● August 21 - A rising Country/Americana duo. Jonathan Hunter, and Dakota Girton, return to the square after their rousing first performance at last year’s Summer Sounds.

ACSC Receives Learning Recovery Grant
The Avon Community School Corporation was among 110 community partners and schools across the state to be awarded one of the new Indiana Student Learning Recovery Grants. The grant will enable Avon schools to partner with the Purdue University Indiana Science Technology Engineering and MathematicsNetwork.
“Community partners and educators are teaming up like never before to accelerate student learning this summer and in the years ahead,” Gov. Holcomb said. “We know that igniting student learningdemands unprecedented collaboration from us all -- educators, local leaders, community groups, parents and beyond. As these programs launch now and over the coming weeks, it’s an exciting time to be in an Indiana classroom.”
As part of these awards, schools will work with IDOE to track student outcomes and monitor the return on investment in order to elevate local success stories and help others develop plans to maximize student learning in light of the COVID-19 disruption.
Governor Makes Appointments
The following Hendricks County residents were appointed to various boards and commissions by Gov. Eric J. Holcomb.
Doris Brauman-Moore, Avon, attorney with the Brauman Moore & Harvey Law Offices was reappointed to the Indiana Retirement Home Guaranty Fund Board of directors. She will serve until March 31, 2023.
Jim Huston, Brownsburg, was reappointed to the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission and was re-appointed as chair of the commission. He will serve until March 31, 2025.
Amo Fish Fry is Back!

Cascade Youth League teams take a turn as celebrities in the Amo Fish Fry Parade.
The Amo Fish Fry is back to open the Fish Fry season with three days of fun, food, and activities for the whole family. The festival takes place June 10, 11, and 12 on the grounds of Mill Creek West Elementary in the small Clay Township town. Hosted by the Amo Volunteer Fire Dept. and the Cascade Youth League.
Food will begin serving at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, and at noon on Saturday. The menu includes fish, fritters, hot dogs, onion rings, French fries, mushrooms, salads, along with pies and cakes, coffee and drinks.
A Cruise In will take place Friday, 5 to 9 p.m., in the parking at the school, hosted by Carter’s Garage.
Antique tractors and farm equipment will be on display all three days. Hendricks Power will feature a demonstration of power line safety at 6:30 each evening.
Southern Bridges will supply live music every nightfrom 6 to 10 p.m.
Saturday, at 2 p.m. the Amo Fish Fry Parade will feature floats, Youth League Teams and more. Bounce houses for the kiddies will be open from 1 to 10 p.m. on Saturday. There will also be a kiddie tractor pull on Saturday at 4 p.m.
Festival rides and a commercial tent will be open all three days. You’ll also have the opportunity to see the new $1.2 million Brian Burch Memorial Sports Park adjacent to the school.
Admission is free and everyone is welcome!
Hendricks Co. Republican Women Meeting
The Hendricks County Republican Women will meet on Monday, June 14, at the NSSB located at 1500 E Main St Danville. Social time begins at 5:30 with the meeting at 6 p.m.
There will a conversation and Legislative Wrap- Up from Representatives Greg Steuerwald, Bob Behing and Jeff Thompson. Also in attendance will be Senator John Crane. Senator Mike Young and Congressman Jim Baird have also been invited, but not confirmed at this time. They will discuss the legislation that just went through the last session and there will be an opportunity for Q & A as well.

American Girl Doll Tea Party
The Hendricks County Museum will host an America Girl Tea Party on Saturday, June 12, between 11 a.m. - 3 p.m.
Each doll introduces a historical era. Featured dolls will be Felicity, Kirsten Larson (1854),Addy Walker (1864), Samantha Parkington (1904), and Molly McIntyre (1944), Kaya’a (Native American) and Nanea Mitchell (Hawaiian). On loan for the event are also Tenney and Blair.
The public is invited to bring their treasured American Girl dolls and learn more about these historical dolls. Paper dolls of Molly, Samantha and Kirstin will be available for guests. Punch and cookies will be served.
The Museum is located at 170 S. Washington, Danville.
Destination Danville
Looking for things to do this weekend? Saturday, June 12 is the second annual Destination Daville Festival.
From 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., browse a variety of handmade and vintage vendors on the square, enjoy live music, food, breweries and distillers.
It’s also a good opportunity to visit the many unique stores and restaurants on the court house square.
Yard Sale For Project Homeless
Project Homeless, Inc. is having a yard sale June 17-18-19, 8 a.m. -?, at Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church, 701 E. Tilden Rd., Brownsburg. All proceed will go to Project Homeless.
Receives Full Scholarship To Manchester University

Brianna Howard is the first recipient of ManchesterUniversity's new full-ride Multicultural Excellence in Leadership Scholarship. It covers tuition, fees, room and board for up to four years at the northeast Indiana university.
The recent Brownsburg High School graduate has taken advanced placement and honors courses while maintaining a high gradepoint average.
This full-ride scholarship is renewable each year, for a total of four years. It covers tuition, fees and on-campus room and meal plan expenses. Manchester will award one scholarship each year.
"This scholarship allows us to encourage the leaders of tomorrow," said Manchester University President Dave McFadden. "Brianna demonstrates a strong commitment to advocate for change and has a strong academic record. We are pleased to welcome her to the Manchester community."
Howard's scholarship application essay, "Be the Change," focused on systemic racism within law enforcement and finding societal solutions that go beyond social media.
"Brianna demonstrates the character and qualities you hope for in a college applicant," said Alex Gregg, her high school math teacher, adding that she "demonstrated the level of commitment necessary to succeed in college and beyond."
