A Love Story That Took That Took Decades To Tell

A surprising love story that started in Danville over 60 years ago wound up in this month’s issue of People Magazine.

Peggy and Jim were members of the Danville High School Class of 1958. After graduation, they started their separate lives. Several weeks after Peggy Smutz’s husband of 43years died, she received a call from classmate Don Wilson, who had lost his wife of 53 years and wanted to offer his condolences.

Having met when they were in first grade, they had many happy memories in common. Bill called Peggy a few more times and began a renewed relationship. While Peggy was adamant that they remain “just friends,” Don proposed and was turned down.

Still, they kept up their long-distance conversation. Peggy encouraged Don to try meeting new people via Zoom. She offered to help by being his first Zoom friend. After two weeks, Peggy realized she was falling in love with her former classmate.

They met in person for the first time since graduation at another classmate’s house in Danville. Less than a month later, they were married at the Danville United Methodist Church.

The happy couple who found new love in their 80’s now live in Surprize, Arizona.

Let’s see a Hollywood scriptwriter come up with anything better than that. ______________________________________________

Danville Takes on Tigers of Lebanon

This past week was a light one for the Danville Warriors basketball team, and the light week will continue after the game against Edgewood on February 11 and North Putnam scheduled for Tuesday, February 16 was cancelled due the inclement weather over the past week. They will not hit the hardwood again until Friday, February 19 when they host the Crawfordsville Athenians. This game will be the 2020-2021 Senior Night and just as important, the winner of this game will win the Sagamore Conference. It goes without saying…this is a very important game!

On February 9, the team made the trip up north on State Road 39 to pay a visit to the Lebanon Tigers in another critical conference match up. The Warriors took their 12-2 record into Rosenstihl Gymnasium hoping to continue to build on their recent success.

Danville had an uncharacteristic slow start to the game which included going 0-4 from the free-throw line in the first quarter. They trailed the Tigers 15-13 at the end of the period and it felt like this game might be close all the way.

The Warriors found their way in the second quarter as they rallied after falling further behind and took a 28-27 lead into the halftime locker room. This momentum carried over into the third quarter and Danville methodically began to pull away, increasing their lead to 6 by the end of the period.

The Warriors would put this one away in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Tigers 20-13, on their way to a 63- 50 win and improve their conference record to 7-0. Danville is now 13-2 on the season and their success will be put to the test with two critical conference games coming up.

Leading Danville was Tyler Dostin with 22 points, Kobe Ward had 18 points, and Brady Ruggles finished with 12 on the evening.

Next up for the Warriors is the afore mentioned game against Crawfordsville and then the rescheduled contest at North Putnam on Saturday, February 20.
