Bluebird Box Distribution

Do you have Eastern bluebirds around your property or good bluebird habitat?

These birds favor short grass open areas. If you do, putting up a nest box will encourage them to raise their off-spring and help to maintain/increase their numbers in Hendricks County.

Eastern bluebirds, a bird native to North America, eat primarily insects and larvae. You can enjoy seeing and hearing them if you provide a nesting cavity (a special box) for them to use.

Come to the Hendricks County Fairgrounds on March 16, Tuesday, between 6 and 8 p.m. for a drive-in pick-up. A $10 donation per box is requested.

Membership is $10/ year if you want to join us in helping these beautiful birds.

Plainfield Lions Deliver Valentines To Senior Facilities

Plainfield Lions Club member Tom Iles sorts through the handmade Valentines.

Members of the Plainfield Lions Club joined together with Clarks Creek, Brentwood and Van Buren Elementary Schools in Plainfield to deliver over 400 hand-made valentines to the residents and essential workers at Sugar Grove Senior Living, Cumberland Trace Nursing and Rehabilitation Center and Plainfield Health Care Center.

The valentines were hand-made by the students at the elementary schools and were delivered to the senior living facilities by members of the Lions Club.

This has been an annual event in which the Plainfield Lions Club and the elementary schools in Plainfield have worked together to provide valentines to those residents in senior living facilities who may not receive a valentine otherwise. This year, due to the large number of handmade valentines, there were enough to share with the essential workers at those facilities.

Lions clubs are groups of men and women who identify needs within their local communities and work together to fulfill those needs. For more information or to get involved with the Plainfield Lions Club, please contact Tom Iles at 317-600-5193 or via email at t.iles@sbcglobal.net.

Join Vandalia Trail Brisk Bike Rides At Plainfield

In its third winter, the Vandalia Trail Brisk Bike Rides series in Plainfield is hosted by the Friends of the Vandalia Trail (www.nrht.org/vandalia).

The rides take place on the third Saturday morning each month, November-March.

Whether you’re a regular cold weather rider or would like to try it for the first time, come on out and enjoy a relaxed opportunity to try out your cold weather gear and exchange strategies on staying warm on the bike.

The gathering point is right behind Biggby’s Coffee and the Metro Diner and in front of Meijer, convenient for a hot drink before and a warm breakfast and shopping after. The riders launch off to the nearby Vandalia Trail, part of the cross-Indiana National Road Heritage Trail, Inc. initiative, ride at a leisurely pace to its west end, then back to and down the White Lick Creek Trail a bit, finally returning to the Vandalia Trail for the last stretch back to breakfast.

This route is about 10 miles, but the group or individuals can choose more or less, depending on the conditions. The out-and-back routing gives a lot of flexibility on distance. In the past, ride temperatures have ranged 11-45 degrees.

Riders participate at their own risk. Minors must be accompanied by an adult who is responsible for them. If icy conditions exist or if it is raining or snowing, the ride will be canceled. For more information, visit www.nrht.org/ vandalia. ______________________________________________

Gypsy’s Den Offers Hand-Crafted & Vintage Shopping at Clayton

There is a new vintage and handcrafted store located in the small town of Clayton, Indiana. The Gypsy’s Den opened Black Friday of 2020 offering a variety of all things vintage, furniture, handmade goods, plants, guitars, records, clothes and many other items. Owners Brittany and Alex work as a team in their store. Brittany handles all the vintage and Alex handles the guitars, records as well as fix furniture.

Brittany’s love for vintage and all things fancy inspired her to open her own shop. They felt it best to locate their business in a small town to help revive the local economy. Alex said “Anymore you see empty store fronts on mainstreets that used to thrive and it is just sad. We have gotten used to going to Walmart or these days buying online, that we have abandoned our local community and it just seemed right to try to bring back small business to a town that could use it.”

There are several vendors that sell their homemade goods in the shop. You can find needle felted soap, macrame, heirloom seeds grown in Hendricks County, homemade candles and many more items. It is important to the owners that the shop is locally sourced. Brittany said “All of the vendors are very talented local artists” and it is important to her to “try to set a fun, nastalgic appeal. A place that can bring you back to simpler times! And at affordable prices, everyone is able to bring a piece of that back home with them! My children like to help me find fun vintage pieces for the shop while getting a new history lesson with each find!” Brittany’s children also get to watch her do what she loves for a living!

You can visit The Gypsy’s Den at 4881 Iowa Street in Clayton, Indiana the first and last weekend of each month, Friday through Sunday from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Appointments can be made as well. Find them on Facebook @TheGypsiesDen or etsy at https:// etsy.me/3gLdzjJ

Fleece Road Report

“Another year has come and gone and while the Pandemic has kept thingsa little quiet south of town it did not stop the annual Christmas Decoration Contest. What started out slow and eventually ramped up and it all came down to Brad and Lori Wilson and, of course, Jeff and Brenda Fleece. When the dust all settled it was Brad and Lori who eked out the win over Jeff and Brenda. Rumor has it the Fleeceswere looking across the field to the Wilson’s house and were mimicking what they saw across the way!

“Also, congratulations to the Doub family as they swept the Ramp Run Preview Cattle Show that was held in late October. Also a special thanks to this year’s judges, Darrel Coons (Coonsey) for sorting out the calves. Coonsey said those Charolais Cavles at the Doub Farm were just too much for the Fleece’s, Wyeth’s and Thomas calves. Coonsey has quite an eye for cattle as he commented on the functionality and soundness of the calves while sorting calves.”
