About the Friends of Carl Sandburg at Connemara...

resident Lyndon Johnson approved the act to make Pulitzer Prize-winning poet and writer Carl Sandburg’s last house a national historic site in 1968. The Friends of Carl Sandburg at Connemara started in 1988 as a volunteer support group to promote the historical, scientific, literary, educational and interpretive activities of the Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site.

To accomplish this mission the Friends stage community events and raise funds to support the diverse needs of the property. Government funding can only accomplish so much! By the way, the National Park Service employs about 22,000 people and counts on some 220,000 volunteers who contribute 6.4 million hours of service annually.

This year the Friends of Carl Sandburg are proud to join the National Park Service in a 100th Birthday bash. In addition to our much-anticipated biennnial Hobo Ball (Carl Sandburg spent time as a hobo when he was 19 years old and the experience informed his writing the rest of his life) we have lined up an entire week of Sandburg in September Centennial events that include sing-alongs, performance poetry, movies and more. The national spotlight will be falling on Henderson County and we are going all out to show off the rich historic and cultural landscape that makes our Western North Carolina mountains special.

Here in Henderson County we are fortunate to have one of the tiny jewels of the National Park System - the Carl Sandburg National Historic Site where the Pulitzer-Prize winning “Poet of the People” spent the final 22 years of his life. The Friends of Carl Sandburg at Connemara is a community-based volunteer organization that works to help raise some of those missing funding dollars each year.

As a poet, biographer, raconteur and tireless defender of the common man, Carl Sandburg was a national treasure. We in Henderson county are fortunate that he chose to spend the final 22 years of his life with us and we are privileged to be able to contribute to the on-going preservation of his life and legacy.

This year The Friends of Carl Sandburg at Connemara are pleased to join the National Park Service in celebrating the 100th Birthday of the National Park Service. In co-operation with the National Park Service we have created more than a week of Carl Sandburg-related events we are calling “Sandburg in September.” This includes our sixth Hobo Ball that remembers the days in his 19th year that Carl rode the rails of the American Midwest - a formative experience that remained at the core of his writing the remainder of his life.

Sandburg often called himself an “eternal hobo.”

he federal government first preserved land for future recreation in Hot Springs, Arkansas in 1832. Andrew Jackson was in the White House. Abraham Lincoln afforded protection for groves of sequoia trees in Yosemite Valley during his administration. Ulysses S. Grant signed the legislation making Yellowstone the first official national park - and the world’s first national park - on March 1, 1872. Many call it “America’s best idea.”

The parks were originally managed by the Department of Interior. In 1915 a fervent conservationist named Stephen Mather, who made a private fortune selling borax mined out of Death Valley as a cleaner, began advocating for the parks to get their own agency. President Woodrow Wilson concurred and signed the bill to create the National Park Service on August 25, 1916. Mather was put in charge of the new department.

Mather had high standards for what should qualify as a national park and today, while the NPS oversees 412 units, only 59 are designated national parks. There are over 20 other titles to preserve special places. The Carl Sandburg Home’s designation as a “National Historic Site” is the most popular. Mather was also a big booster of providing automobile access to the parks for people to enjoy them - without compromising the site’s natural beauty.

To celebrate a century of stewardship, the National Park Service had dedicated 2016 as a Centennial celebration of existing parks and to kickstart a call to action for the next 100 years of promoting, protecting and preserving the lessons of America and the best of its lands. At the head of that mandate is connecting people to parks - beginning with involving 10,000 youth each year in an on-going series of diverse park experiences.

Sandburg in September Event Sandburg Sing-along Friday September 9 Henderson County Visitor Center Stage

F

amily sing-alongs behind Carl Sandburg’s guitar were as much a part of Connemara evenings as the pine-scented North Carolina mountain air. To launch the Centennial celebration of Sandburg in September the selection of Beth and Jim Magill to create the spirit of an old-fashioned Sandburg sing-along was a natural.

Jim got his start on the college circuit as a duo known as Hot Shandy playing what he called “music and goofy stuff.”

It was Celtic and bluegrass music and The Magills there were a couple of albums and a fiveyear stint as a house band at Sloppy Joe’s in Key West. Jim finally landed at Warren Wilson College where he became an award-winning songwriter and Director of the Swannanoa Gathering Folk Arts Workshops.

Beth Magill always thought “everyone is musical” but did not consider music a career until she met Jim. But since that fateful day she has been devoted to evangelizing the Irish flute and tin whistle. Beth was a staple of the early childhood music education program in Asheville for over a decade and has appeared on numerous recordings and NPR’s widely admired Mountain Stage performance program. Together, the Magills regularly lead Sing Together events at the Diana Wortham Theatre on Asheville’s Pack Square.

Pat Corn has been playing country music since his father made him a guitar from a Prince Albert cigar box, a broom handle and fishing line for strings when he was three years old in Hendersonville. From his base in the Great Smoky Mountains Pat organized a country music anthology show band, “High Country,” whose performances were suitable for dinner theaters. Pat was seven years old when he first appeared on stage in 1958 at Flat Rock High after an assembly led by Carl Sandburg; during his 50-years-plus music career he Pat Corn has been a familiar face at Sandburg events.

What the Friends Do: Carl Sandburg Folk Music Festival “I am a loafer and a writer and would much rather loaf and write, and pick a guitar with the proper vags, than to deliver spoken exhortations before any honorable bodies wheresoever.”

A Carl Sandburg live performance had a familiar rhythm to the proceedings: a talk about poetry and art, a reading of some original verses and a finale of fifteen to thirty minutes of songs laced with commentary. Sandburg first added music to his repertoire in 1910, before he ever had a book of poetry published, when he picked up a guitar for the first time.

He collected folk songs wherever he traveled, finding them in the lives of milkmen, oil drillers, ranchers and chuck wagon cooks. He scribbled lyrics in notebooks and developed a rudimentary notation system to remember melodies. He published 280 tunes in 1927 in American Songbag, a book he called, “an All-American affair, marshaling the genius of thousands of original singing Americans.” He supplied historic commentary along with the lyrics and piano accompaniment.

Sandburg never bothered to learn more than a few simple chords and delivered songs in an untrained baritone but his impact on audiences was spellbinding, as if he were the conduit for the very American experience. Sandburg made recordings that can still be heard on the internet.

Since 1987, every Memorial Day guests are treated to a line-up of traditional folk performers who evoke the summer evenings of Carl Sandburg and the family sitting on the porch strumming and singing.

The Carl Sandburg Folk Music Festival is free for all.

Six Famous People Who Were Hoboes Jack London Jack London went to sea as a young man and when he returned in 1894 at the age of 18 America was in the throes of a four-year economic downturn. He survived by "tramping," once being pinched in Niagara Falls and sentenced to thirty days in the county penitentiary for vagrancy. By 1897 London was in the Klondike goldfields where he found riches - not in ore but in stories he used to become one of America's first commercially successful novelists.

William O. Douglas William O. Douglas grew up in the fruit-growing region of Eastern Washington state where he worked in migrant camps. After earning a scholarship to Columbia Law School in New York City in 1922 he made his way east "riding the rods" and tending sheep on the train. With the odd jobs now behind him, Douglas was nominated to the Supreme Court of the United States by Franklin Roosevelt in 1939 and served 36 years, the longest term in American history.

Louis L'Amour While most were forced to the hobo life by circumstance, Louis L'Amour embraced the life of the itinerant worker. He rode the rails in the 1920s and 1930s working in mines, picking fruit, skinning cattle, mucking circus grounds and boxing.

He eventually wrote over 100 books and America's best-known spinner of Western stories called his autobiography Education of a Wandering Man.

Art Linkletter Arthur Gordon Kelly was abandoned as an infant in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan and was adopted by John and Mary Linkletter. Forced to earn a living as a teenager, Linkletter became a hobo in the 1920s for several years. A favorite gambit was sorting through discarded lemons behind a fruit-packing plant and selling the best of the bad lot door-to-door.

The famous television host titled his 1980 memoir Hobo On the Way to Heaven.

Eric Sevareid A persistent drought in the Upper Midwest in the 1920s spawned wanderlust in Arnold Eric Sevareid. When he was 18 years old Sevareid undertook a 2,200-mile canoe trip from Minneapolis to the Hudson Bay in Canada. In 1933, at the age of 21, he hitchhiked to California to work in the gold fields. When the gold didn't pan out the future CBS news man worked his way back to Minnesota as a hobo.

Robert Mitchum Robert Mitchum spent most of his days between the ages of 14 and 18 as one of the "wild boys of the road." In 1933, when he was 16, he was arrested for vagrancy in Savannah and spent seven days repairing Georgia roads on a chain gang before escaping ahead of a flurry of misplaced rifle shots. Mitchum spent two more years sleeping in hobo camps and jails before getting off the rails for good in California and becoming one of Hollywood's biggest stars.

here are only a few years that can truly be said to be watershed years in American history. 1968 was one of those years. Carl Sandburg lived until 1967 and during his lifetime was celebrated as a spokesman on behalf of “the people.” He was one of the most successful writers in the English language and his poetry was taught in schools across the United States. Yet, after his death, Sandburg’s literary legacy faded and his poems were dismissed under the weight of massive critical attack.

America had changed.

Six years in production, the feature length documentary The Day Carl Sandburg Died examines the complex social and political events that shaped the author and his work. While exploring Sandburg’s contributions to poetry, history, journalism, music, and children’s literature the filmakers use rarely seen archival footage and a stellar cast of interviewees including Pete Seeger, Studs Terkel and Norman Corwin to place Sandburg’s legacy in modern perspective. As part of Sandburg in September the Flat Rock Cinema is thrilled to present this 2012 film in its entirety.

History of Connemara

B

y 1838 Flat Rock was well established as “The Little Charleston of the Mountains” and as 35-year old Christopher Gustavus Memminger observed, “The first comers had the best sites for residences. But as I also wanted a farm I could not be so easily furnished as the land near Flat Rock is miserably barren.”

After considerable efforts he contracted to buy land from a tract of Charles Baring and set about building a house he called “Rock Hill.” Sills and beams were hewn on site and local craftsmen built the furnishings.

Memminger was a founding father of the Confederate States of America and served as the first Secretary of the Treasury in the Jefferson Davis administration - his portrait appeared on the Confederate $5 bill. He is said to have lobbied for Flat Rock as a capital for the Confederacy since it could be easily defended. After the Civil War, Memminger was pardoned and returned to Charleston to practice law. C.S. Memminger lived until the age of 85 and is buried at St. John in the Wilderness.

Rock Hill was sold out of the Memminger family after the patriarch’s death in 1888. The new buyer was a veteran Confederate colonel named William Gregg. He in turn sold the property to Ellison Adger Smyth, who was instrumental in bringing the textile trade to Carolina mountains, helping to found the Pelzer Manufacturing Company on the Saluda River in 1880. In 1900 Smyth, whose namesake nephew would become the first football coach at Virginia Tech University, changed the name of the property to Connemara, to honor his ancestral Irish homeland. All the while the property remained a summer home.

Smyth moved to Connemara full-time in 1925 after winding down a business career that at its peak saw the industrialist helming 36 corporations and a dozen banks. He winterized the house and expanded the barn area and gardens. Captain E.A. Smyth died in 1942 at the age of 94 - almost 80 years after his service in the Confederate States of America.

The Sandburgs at Connemara

love it here. I love to skip stones. I’m going to miss it all.” So said Carl Sandburg as he prepared to leave Harbert, Michigan in 1945 where he and his wife Lillian had lived in a cottage overlooking the Lake Michigan dunes for almost twenty years. But the winters were getting to be too much.

Carl left the decision of where to relocate mostly to his wife. After all, she had followed the whims of his career to that point.

Back in 1908, Carl and Lilian had dreamed of having a “shack in the woods with a roof, four walls, three chairs (one for company), a hat rack, a bread box, and a bowl for wild flowers and a coffeepot.” Now, Lillian Sandburg needed a place to manage her burgeoning goat herd so she concentrated her search on a farm. When she visited the 245-acre Connemara property that had been on the market for three years since Captain Smyth’s death, she decided it offered the perfect blend of grazing lands and writerly inspiration. When Carl came to inspect the farm he immediately added his endorsement, with one caveat. The Greek Revival manor house was certainly a “baronial estate for an old socialist,” he mused. The Sandburgs paid $45,000 for Connemara.

Soon a trainload of Sandburg possessions was chugging from Michigan to Flat Rock, including 16,000 books. At the age of 67 Carl Sandburg could be expected to relax on the slopes of Glassy Mountain. But when he wasn’t fixing up the century-old house Sandburg would produce more than a third of his life work on the farm in his remaining 22 years and win a second Pulitzer Prize, this time for poetry.

Carl Sandburg died at Connemara in 1967 at the age of 89. Lillian Sandburg sold the property to the National Park Service and donated all of the family’s belongings in the deal. The result is one of America’s best-preserved writer’s homes. The National Park Service opened the park to the public in 1974 and elects to interpret the 180-year old national treasure from the two decades when the Sandburgs lived here.

Preservation Work of Connemara

W

hile celebrating its 100th Birthday in 2016, the National Park Service is also experiencing a once-in-a-lifetime event at the Carl Sandburg National Historic Site. During 2015 most of the furnishings inside the Sandburg home were inventoried and sent away to climate-controlled temporary digs.

Meanwhile the house is undersiege by an army of experienced preservationists. Deteriorating windows are being repaired and reglazed. Some of the original wood flooring is being refinished. The conservatory on the east side of the house is being brought back to life.

All of the work - whenever possible - is being carried out using historically appropriate methods. So while the house may feel cooler when all is done it is not because of an air conditioning system the Sandburgs would never have enjoyed but from a ventilation system that dehumidifies the air and pushes it through the house.

The house remains open for tours even as the preservation work, expected to last into 2018, is ongoing. This gives visitors a unique “behind the scenes� look at both how the Sandburgs encountered their unfurnished spaces and the efforts required to keep historic houses open to the public.

House tours last 30 minutes and depart every hour on the half-hour. There are no reservations and these fascinating in-depth looks at the Sandburgs and Connemara are the only activities in the park that require a small fee.

Preservation and Skills Training Program (PAST)

T

he National Park Service must wear many hats and one that is among the least appreciated is the maintenance and preservation of over 20,000 historic structures. Many of these pieces of America’s heritage - that can range from airy lodges to chicken coops to stone walls - reside on the “endangered list” due to deterioration that is the result of a nefarious tag team of inadequate funding and overmatched employees.

The availablilty of money that can never be counted on pompted the National Park Service to intitiate the Preservation and Skills Training Program (PAST), a way to arm the maintenance employees on the front lines of the battle to protect of heritage infrastructure. PAST is a two-year program that immerses participants in masonry, carpentry and woodcrafting techniques as they relate to the treatment of historic structures. Officials in our national parks adhere to the following principles of architectural preservation: 1.

Don’t create a building that never existed.

Learn to recognize and value the patina of the past.

Recognize evidence from the past and use it to determine and interpret the building’s history.

Sandburg in September Event Spoken Word Performance Poetry Tuesday September 20 Jongo Java 7:00 pm

B

efore Carl Sandburg was a poet, before he was a folk singer, before he was a biographer, he was known to the public for the spoken word. His first paid speaking engagement came in Racine, Wisconsin in 1906. The Wisconsin Social-Democrats were so impressed that the son of Swedish immigrants was soon recruited as an orator for the party and the socialist movement.

As Sandburg’s performance persona evolved he scoffed at convention, often expressed by critics. His poetry did not rhyme. His singing voice was untrained.

Poets can not be biographers. Wrong, wrong and wrong again.

One rather expects that Carl Sandburg would be a fan of Moody Black Moody Black who highlights the Spoken Word Performance Poetry event during Sandburg in September. Moody Black, whose real name is Robert Mullins, Jr., hails from Spartanburg, South Carolina where he is a spoken-word and visual artist, actor, story teller, and photographer. He first performed in front of an audience when he was 12 years old.

Mullins is a leading cheerleader for slam poetry - taking the traditional verse ever further afield from iambic pentameter than Sandburg did. But as Mullins tells it, while slam poetry bears little resemblance to traditional poetry, it has its roots in the same field of art where Sandburg toiled. “You have people from all walks of life telling their story, and they’re performing it,” explains Mullins.

Mullins hosts an open-mic poetry slam on Sunday nights at Coffee Underground in Greenville, which is South Carolina’s longest running open mic slam, going on 14 years now. Mullins has been there for it all. When he takes a break from his hosting duties, Moody Black electirifes audiences across the United States with his fusion of hip-hop and soul into his original poems.

It is not conventional and you can’t buttonhole it. Each time Moody Black takes the stage he is looking to change a life in a little way. Sounds a lot like Carl Sandburg.

What the Friends Do: Student Poetry Contest “Poetry is a pack-sack of invisible keepsakes. Poetry is a sky dark with a wild-duck migration. Poetry is the opening and closing of a door, leaving those who look through to guess about what is seen during a moment. Poetry is an echo, asking a shadow to dance.”

H

ow can the legacy of Carl Sandburg be truly honored without inspiring tomorrow’s poets? To that end, the National Park Service, with support from the Friends, sponsors a Student Poetry Contest each year.

The contest is open to students in grades 3-12 and young poets can opt for any style with their original poems. As Sandburg himself once sniffed, when asked about his tendency towards free verse, “If it jells into free verse, all right. If it jells into rhyme, all right.”

Each December the Park Service announces a theme to guide students in their inspiration. Entries are due by late FebAll entries in the Student ruary or early March. Judging is Poetry Contest must be typed done by members of the North not handwritten.

Carolina Poetry Society but the contest is open to scholastic writers nationwide. Visitors to the Carl Sandburg Historic Site during March can view the entries and vote for their favorite poem in each grade, leading to a People’s Choice award as well. All winners are invited to present their winning poems at a special NPS reception.

What the Friends Do: The Writer-in-Residence Program “I have written some poetry that I don’t understand myself.”

D

espite moving to Connemara at an age when most people are ready to retire and relax, Carl Sandburg produced about onethird of all his writing in the North Carolina mountains. As such, when Lilian Sandburg deeded the Sandburg home to the National Park Service she expressed a desire for the farm to be a place of inspiration for future writers.

That wish became a reality in 2010 when the Friends implemented a Writer-in-Residence Program at Connemara.

Selection is tilted towards early career writers who are no longer in school. Residency runs for three weeks in April and includes a $1500 stipend.

Resident writers agree to promote and represent the Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site during their stay and to work in community outreach to raise the awareness of writing as a skill and a profession. Writers are expected to complete a finished work within six months that will reside in the park archives and promote future residencies.

Oh, and we do not throw the word “residence” about willy-nilly.

The selected writer lives in the park, just down the hill from the Sandburg home in an historic structure that is now referred to as the Farm Manager’s House.

It was the cottage for the caretaker of Connemara.

The Writer-in-Residence is the sole occupant of the fully furnished house.

Evenings after the park closes are truly special times as there are no artificial lights to intrude on the peaceful spring nights.

Sandburg Summer Stage

A

lmost as old as the park itself is the tradition of apprentice actors from the Flat Rock Playhouse performing adaptations of Carl Sandburg works for summer visitors. The curtain first went up in 1974.

A staple of the Sandburg Summer Stage is Rootabaga!, based on Sandburg’s 1922 collection of “American fairy tales” created for his own daughters.

The Sandburg stories dispensed with tradiitonal princesses and castles and Old World locales and infused them with familiar American icons such as movie actors and prairie farmers and automobiles.

Other foundation productions in the Flat Rock Playhouse Apprentice Company player’s quiver are The People’s Poet, Sandburg’s Lincoln, and The World of Carl Sandburg. All of the plays sprinkle the themes of fairness, empathy and social justice that were a hallmark of Sandburg’s more than half-century of observing and writing on the American condition.

In honor of the 2016 Centennial of the National Park Service the company produced two new original works for the Sandburg Summer Stage: Spink, Skabootch and Swipes in Rootabaga Country, written and directed by Flat Rock Playhouse producing artistic director Lisa K. Bryant, and Rootabaga Express! with book, music, lyrics and direction by Flat Rock Playhouse 2016 apprentice director Ethan Andersen. Spink, Skabootch and Swipes were the names Carl Sandburg affectionately called his daughters.

The performances take place Wednesday through Saturday mornings from mid-June to mid-August at the outdoor park amphitheatre in the grove adjacent to the historic Sandburg house. The half-hour plays begin at 10:15 and the show goes on rain or shine. Like admission to the park itself, admission to the Sandburg Summer Stage is free.

The National Park Service People at Carl Sandburg Home NHS H. Tyrone Brandyburg, Park Superintendent Tyrone began his National Park Service career as a co-op student at Fort Sumter National Monument in Charleston, South Carolina while attending South Carolina State College. After graduation and 3 years of experience, he transferred to Tuskegee Institute National Historic Site, Alabama to the position of lead Interpretive Park Ranger and Museum Specialist. While living in the area, Tyrone attended Alabama State University where he received a Master’s Degree in American History with the emphases on African-American Studies. Tyrone continued his African American Studies experience when he was promoted to the position of Chief Ranger at Booker T. Washington National Monument in Hardy Virginia. Later, Tyrone was very fortunate to be selected to the position of Chief of Interpretation for the newly formed Brown v. Board of Education NHS, in Topeka Kansas. Before returning to Tuskegee Institute National Historic as Chief of Resource Education and Interpretation, Tyrone spent two years at the Great Smoky Mountains National Park as District Interpretive Ranger. After 6 years in Alabama, Tyrone transferred to Moore’s Creek National Battlefield as Superintendent. Wanting a broader experience in Management, Tyrone was promoted to Superintendent of Carl Sandburg Home NHS. Steven Kidd, Resource Management Chief Steven joined our Sandburg Team in the fall of 2015, from the Blue Ridge Parkway. Steven’s Master’s in Anthropology, as well as his many years of experience managing cultural resources and historic structures, are a natural fit for managing the Sandburg collection, buildings and grounds. Steven provides the leadership for the entire resource and facilities management team in ensuring that the parks natural and cultural landscape and resources are protected and preserved.

He secures funding for necessary maintenance and provides planning to ensure the needs of critical resource challenges are met.

Sarah Perschall, Visitor Services Chief Sarah holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in History and Criminal Justice and has been with the National Park Service since 1997. Sarah is responsible for oversight of the visitor services or public information and education division, which includes house tours, farm operations, education programming, special events and outreach activities. She serves as the park’s Public Information Officer, managing the parks’ web content, press releases, signage and publications/brochures. Sarah is also the park volunteer coordinator and the park’s liaison to the Friends for expenditures and grants.

Lisa Ward, Administrative Support Assistant Lisa is the initial point of contact for the park, and she responds and routes phone calls, mail and emails to the appropriate staff. Lisa also processes payroll, assists the management team with a variety of administrative tasks, and keeps all of our office supplies ordered and in stock. She keeps the lending library orderly, issues vehicle passes and provides administrative support to staff. Lisa holds a Bachelors of Arts degree in General Studies and has spent her entire NPS career at the Carl Sandburg Home, because she loves the location and her family lives here.

Janene Donovan, Park Ranger Janene has a Bachelor of Science in Wildlife Ecology and has worked at the park since 1985. She manages the entire barn operation which includes recruiting, training and managing volunteers to staff the barn and tend to the care and feeding of the goat herd. Janene also manages the annual goat breeding and birthing season, and handles the required documentation of historic herd status. She also manages the Fee Collection Program, the FRESH youth volunteer program, plans the annual Memorial Day event, and assists with house tours and special events.

Ginger H. Cox, Education Coordinator Ginger holds a Bachelor of Science in Education and is a Certified Interpretive Guide and Certified NPS Trainer. Ginger plans and facilitates on site curriculum based education programs to students grade K-12. She also helps plan several of the annual events at the park, writes grants and trains summer intern teams, as well as recruiting and training volunteers for house tours and education groups. Ginger is also a member of the Green Team and serves as the lead for Centennial planning committee.

Jane Grossman, Eastern National Associate Jane has extensive retail background with Saks Fifth Avenue Federated in New York City, as well owning her own import business. Jane has been at the park since Spring 2014, and she manages the Eastern National Bookstore where she ensures that visitors have an opportunity to connect with the Sandburg story through purchases of books, music and other memorabilia. She also does product design and development and keeps our store stocked with relevant items that will generate visitor interest and park income.

John Roman, Exhibit Specialist John is a member of the PAST program, (Preservation Arts Skills Training), John ensures that our historic buildings are managed for preservation. He contracts and trains crews from this program to address the repair and restoration needs of the park’s historic structures, exhibits and signage. John uses the agency project management system to plan, budget and perform work safely and in accordance with NPS standards.

Irene Van Hoff, Biological Technician Irene holds undergraduate degrees in forest management technology, natural resource management, and certification in horticulture technology. She received her M.S. in Biology in 2014. Irene began her natural resource career as a research technician for Virginia Tech, the US Forest Service, and NCSU Mountain Horticultural Crops Research and Extension Center, and has worked at the Park since 2001. Irene ensures that our natural and cultural landscapes reflect the values of preservation. She plans work that reduces risk from hazardous trees, manages invasive species, and conserves habitat important to vulnerable plants and animals. She serves as the NEPA Specialist for the park, co-chair of the park’s Green Team, and manages a variety of volunteer groups that focus on protection of natural resources.

Jeffery Harris, Maintenance Worker Jeff has a Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management and an Associate in Horticulture and joined us through the NPS Pathways Program. He is also a member of the Preservation Arts Skills Team, and is a trained Sawyer. Jeff assists with structural repairs, operates the tractor and other heavy equipment as needed for tree, trail or road work, and maintains lawns, and pasture areas. He also keeps our public contact areas and bathrooms to high standards and the buildings clean inside and out.

Ernesto Alcantar, Pathways Student in Facilities and Resource Management Ernesto is in the Pathways Program and will complete his degree in Environmental Science in spring 2016. He works in all areas of the Resource and Facilities Management team by assisting with numerous natural resources initiatives such as invasive plant removal or treating Hemlock trees for Wooly Adelgid.

Ernesto is a member of the parks Green Team and assists as needed in both natural resource work and in maintenance and restoration work. He also keeps our public contact areas and bathrooms to high standards and the buildings clean inside and out.

Seasonal and Project Staff: You may often see other staff and volunteers throughout the year around the park, as we have well over 150 park volunteers, who help us cover daily operations. We also engage youth through a number of hiring initiatives, some of which are funded by the Friends group. Summer hires may be from Student Conservation Association (SCA), Youth Conservation Corps (YCC), National Park Service seasonal staff, or even summer interns from a variety of colleges.

Sandburg in September Event Seasons of Sandburg Thursday September 22 The Gallery at Flat Rock

W

hen he was a young man shuffling around Illinois in search of a life’s calling, Carl Sandburg reckoned that his future might lie as a painter. Not in acrylics and watercolors, mind you. Carl hired out to a local house painter in his native Galesburg, hoping to learn the trade from a Swedish compatriot of his parents. Mostly what he learned was that the secret of great house painting is surface preparation - after getting his fill of scraping and sandpapering old buildings even the jungles of Cuba and the Spanish-American War looked attractive. Sandburg did not pick up a house paint brush in anger after that.

While Sandburg himself did not create great visual art he certainly inspired his share of it. The Friends of Carl Sandburg at Connemara and the Gallery at Flat Rock are proud to curate this exhibition of works inspired by Carl Sandburg.

oney raised by the Friends goes to helping maintain the landscaping of the park that makes the historic site a favorite of visitors and locals alike. The Friends also funds a summer intern who contributes to learning about the ever-changing ecology of the 264-acre site.

The Carl Sandburg property boasts over five miles of superbly groomed footpaths and farm roads. Looking for a quick leg-stretcher? We have it - an easy exploration on the Front Lake Loop. It is barely a half-mile around and so pretty you will want to do it twice.

Looking for a woodlands ramble? We have it with the Memminger Trail and the Little Glassy Mountain Trail that combine gravel roads with smooth dirt paths. The 2,426-foot mountain abounds with Lady Slipper orchids in the spring.

About Paula Sandburg and her goats...

U

ntil she was 53 Lilian Sandburg, who her husband called “Paula,” had never given much thought to goats. In 1935 when her youngest daughter wanted a milking cow for their Michigan farm, her father suggested a dairy goat instead. Less expensive to feed, easier to move around, he said. Soon a handful of goats were happily grazing the dunes on the Sandburg farm above Lake Michigan.

Paula discovered that her chronic digestion problems were going away as she drank goat’s milk. She became immersed in dairy goats, keeping meticulous daily records on herd management and best breeding practices.

Paula Sandburg was as renowned in hircine circles as Carl Sandburg was in literary circles. Her Chikaming herd became internationally renowned for the quality of its milk and followed her to Connemara Farms where she maintained a commercial dairy. At its peak, the herd numbered about 200 goats. Jennifer II, a Toggenburg dairy goat, was the world’s top producing Toggenburg in the world in 1960.

Mrs. Sandburg bred three of the eight domestic goats sanctioned by the American Dairy Goat Association: the Nubian, a large, long-eared animal famous for the amount of butterfat in its milk; creamy white Saanens from the Alpine valleys of Switzerland; and the Toggenbergs, another Swiss native that is considered the oldest of all goat breeds. The Connemara herd has been recognized by the United States government as a historic herd.

oday the Friends and dedicated volunteers are trusted with maintaining the world famous Connemara goat herd. These days the herd numbers about fifteen animals and they are no longer milked.

Money raised by the Friends goes to purchasing new goats and improving the farm’s breeding program. All newcomers will carry Mrs. Sandburg’s bloodlines into the current herd, which is now more than 80 years old.

Every year you get an opportunity to name one of the baby goats that annually join the Connemara herd. All it takes is one lucky entry in the Name Our Goat Contest. Stop by the Friends tent at the Flat Rock Ice Cream Social in June and give us your best name!

Sandburg in September Event Depot Days Saturday September 24 Hendersonville Train Depot

T

he 1890s were a tough time to come of age for young men in America. Many left their small towns in search of work by hopping freight trains. Carl Sandburg was one of those youths, spending four months in his 19th year living the hobo life. That time would infuse Sandburg’s life and works ever after. For several years he would often forego the “inside ticket” and grab a ride on a freight train when traveling, even when he could afford it.

Passenger train service in Hendersonville began in 1879, one year after Carl Sandburg’s birth, and stopped in 1968, one year after his death. The current historic Craftsman-style depot was the second to be erected in the town and was completed in 1904. Sandburg had stopped hoboing by that time and whenever he got off the train here it was probably from a Pullman club car and not an open hopper car. He would no doubt recognize the station, however, as looking like many that he was run off of by station bulls, as the railroad police were called.

There is no more appropriate venue to celebrate Sandburg in September than the historic Hendersonville Train Depot and the Friends and the Apple Valley Model Railroad Train Club have lined up a day of special activities that include: • Tours and discussion of the depot with types of trains Carl Sandburg once rode • Discussion of hoboes and life in the railyard • Folk music performance by Buddy Davis • Carl Sandburg storytelling with Steve Carlisle • Hobo Nickel demonstration • Hobo Crafts: shoebox banjos, comb harmonicas and more • Connemara Goats make their only Sandburg in September appearance!

Carl Sandburg as Hobo

C

arl Sandburg was born in Galesburg in central Illinois in 1878, a contemporary of Bert Wiegland.

Sandburg left school at the age of 13 to drive a milk wagon and in June of 1897 he, like Wiegland, decided it was time to look for work on the road. Sandburg hopped a freight train bound for the Mississippi River at Fort Madison, Iowa where almost a century earlier the only battle of the War of 1812 west of the Mississippi was fought. Here he found passage on a steamboat downstream to Keokuk by unloading kegs of nails on the dock. He fed himself by working on stoves and cooking meals.

Sandburg saw the entirety of the state of Missouri from a boxcar before reaching Bean Lake on the Missouri River and signing on to a railroad work gang laying track. He washed dishes in Kansas City before jumping on a freight train rolling into the Kansas plains. In the sand dunes of Hutchinson, which was just becoming a great salt-producing region, Sandburg sawed some wood to earn a “lump,” or meal. He hopscotched by rail across Kansas, earning wages in the wheat harvest as he went.

Sandburg was in Rocky Ford, Colorado for Watermelon Day - free melons!.

George W. Swink had developed the watermelon and cantaloupe industries in Rocky Ford and started the festival in 1878, one of the Mile High State’s longest running celebrations. By the time Sandburg arrived the Rocky Ford Cantaloupe was famous on fine restaurant tables from San Francisco to New York City. He then rode the train through the world-famous Royal Gorge, cut by the Arkansas River, to Canon City where he picked pears.

Sandburg’s travels next took him to Denver where he was lucky to arrive.

While napping on the narrow platforms between freight cars he nearly fell off under the wheels, a grisly fate that befell many an itinerant traveler. Safe in the Queen City of the Plains Sandburg found work in the Windsor Hotel, a five-story French Second empire confection that was hailed as the finest accommodations between Chicago and California. While guests luxuriated in rooms with Brussels carpets, silk plush chairs and hot and cold running water, Sandburg washed dishes in the basement.  Denver was as far west as Carl Sandburg was to get. He jumped on a train heading east and got off in McCook, Nebraska where he was told, “We don’t 46

want the likes of you in this town. You get back on that train.” The locals were more cordial in hobo jungles where he spent three days and nights. His next freight ride deposited him in Nebraska City where he chopped wood and helped with the apple harvest. The farmer took pity on the young man for his threadbare clothes and gave him a new suit.

Now sartorially resplendent, Sandburg landed a job washing dishes at the Hotel Mercer in Omaha for $1.50 a week and bedded down in a back hallway. Unfortunately the hotel went bankrupt two weeks later and by the time Boston investor Joseph Gahm showed up to right the financial ship Sandburg was long gone. He never saw the $3.00 owed to him. He had enough money (more than $15) for a train ticket to Council Bluffs, however, and soon he was back home in Galesburg. Carl Sandburg had been working on the road for a little more than four months, scarcely more than a summer vacation adventure from school.

But even though he did not log the “hobo hours” of men like Bert Wiegland and Bo Holmes, his experience as a knight of the road was no less significant. The days as a hobo gave him confidence and helped shape the core of his storytelling about Americans. It also introduced him to the folk songs that would center his life. As Sandburg would later write in All the Young Strangers: “Struggles lay ahead, I was sure, but whatever they were I would not be afraid of them....”

And for many years afterwards Sandburg would often shun the “inside ride” in favor of the “coal car ride,” even when he could afford the ticket. In 1904 while traveling “free” through western Pennsylvania he was nabbed by railroad gendarmes which earned him a ten-day look at Henry Hobson Richardson’s magnificent Allegheny County jailhouse from the unhappy side of the bars.  Sandburg’s identity as a hobo - however brief - also served the itinerant community. Hobos are a proud lot. The moniker comes from a mashing together of “hoe boy” or “homeward bound” or something else - no one knows for sure. But the word is meant to imply a traveling worker. Not a tramp, who will work only when forced. And not a bum, who is a vagrant looking for a handout. Hobos may need a helping hand, but they want to work for it. And being able to point to Carl Sandburg and Ernest Hemingway and Jack London and others who all spent chunks of time as hobos helped life on the road go down a little bit easier for Depression-era workers in their dealings with skeptical townsfolk.

Sandburg in September Event Depot Days - Buddy Davis Saturday September 24 Hendersonville Train Depot

B

uddy Davis, a seventh-generation descendant of settlers of Madison County, has enjoyed a long and varied musical career.

As a child he begged his parents for a guitar, and when he had one, learned to play it by watching Lester Flatt’s fingers when Flatt and Scruggs appeared on television. At the age of fourteen, Davis was hired as a bass player, and proceeded to learn the instrument as he went along. That he had a knack for music is evident, as he has been a professional musician ever since.

During the 1980s, Davis was a railroad police officer, and for seven years he played in the band, The Southern Lawmen, sponsored by the Norfolk-Southern Railroad. He has appeared on country music television features many times, including appearances with Roy Clark on Hee-Haw, and had a long run as co-producer of the series Fire on the Mountain. Davis played bass for a time in Doc Watson’s band, and was nominated for a Grammy with Watson. He has also recorded extensively, including with Madison County ballad singer Lena Jean Ray, the Marc Pruett Band, Doc and Merle Watson, and Jerry Douglas on David Holt’s record, Reel and Rock.

Davis plays many kinds of music along the classic country, bluegrass, and oldtime spectrum. He played in The Bailey Mountain Trio with fellow Madison County native Roger Howell. He currently fronts his own band, playing a vast variety of American music. He also performs at major Folk Festivals with his daughters and granddaughter.

Buddy Davis received the Bascom Lamar Lunsford Award in 2000, in recognition of his significant contributions to traditional music. The Friends are delighted to welcome Buddy on board for Sandburg in September.

The first steam engine puffed up the Saluda Grade to the Hendersonville Depot in 1879. The steam engine needed a “help engine” attached to the rear of the train at Melrose for additional power to push the train up the Saluda Mountain Grade, the steepest main-line standard gauge railroad in the United States. The Depot houses the Apple Valley Model Railroad Club, the largest club layout in Western North Carolina. The HO scale railroad extends 100 feet along the length of the Depot and has over 2,000 feet of track and more than 225 switches and turnouts. The layout is highly detailed and is prototypical of Hendersonville, Saluda, Asheville, and Western North Carolina. The Depot includes many historical artifacts, a Southern Railway caboose that visitors can tour and a special children’s exhibit where they can operate a Thomas the Tank train.

Sandburg in September Event Depot Days - Hobo Nickel Demonstrations Saturday September 24 Hendersonville Train Depot

P

art folk art, part Americana, part numismatic history - all rolled into a small circle of metal. That is the hobo nickel.

Folks have been carving their own designs into coins since hard metal was first used as a medium of exchange some 25 centuries ago. Artisans would take minted coins and shave off words and images and replace them with initials, dates or pictures.

“Do-it-yourselfers” would hack at coins to create messages or document important family events. These coins would become jewelry or lucky charms or, especially in the Victorian age, love tokens.

Each altered coin is a unique handcarved object that carries a tale. Love tokens immortalized a courtship or the birth of a child. Some remember an incarceration in a debtors prison; others were found on battlefields alongside fallen soldiers.

In America the art of coin carving reached its zenith in the 1930s, the years of the Great Depression. Its most storied practitioners were hoboes, itinerant workers who traveled from job to job on freight trains, sans boarding pass. Their tool kits to create their miniature works of bas relief art were primitive: nails filed to a sharp point, pocket knives, screwdrivers, a hammer and maybe an awl or a small cold chisel if they were lucky.

The canvas of choice for hobo carvers was the Buffalo nickel. The five-cent pieces were introduced into the money supply on March 4, 1913 and were an immediate hit. Even though the obverse (front) side of the coin featured the head of an American Indian the popular coins were quickly dubbed “Buffalo nickels.” And the animal on the reverse side is not even a buffalo but an American bison. Designer James Earle Fraser based the model for his coin on Black Diamond, a resident in the Central Park Zoo who had been born and raised in the Barnum and Bailey circus. Fraser found him to be a “typical and shaggy specimen.” In 1915 Black Diamond fell ill and the zoo put the disabled beast up for auction. No bidders were forthcoming and he was slaughtered. Black Diamond Steaks were gobbled up for $2 a pound.

At least he did not have to suffer the indignity of having his likeness called a “buffalo” by the entire country.

The Buffalo nickel had several features to recommend it to coin carvers. For one, on the obverse side the regal American Indian profile consumes nearly the entire disk. And on the back Black Diamond is literally forcing his way through the edge of the coin. So there is plenty of area for the craftsperson to work. The nickels were also minted with a dull finish that was predisposed to wear prematurely, creating a nearly smooth surface on many older coins. The coin was also only 25 percent nickel; the rest was softer and more malleable copper.

Perhaps most importantly during the Depression, the nickel was a low- denomination coin (worth about 90 cents in 2016). By carving designs into the five- cent piece hobos could add value to the coin and “hobo nickels” were exchanged with homeowners for a meal or a place to sleep for the night or other favors. What did hobos carve onto the nickels? The common theme was to simply give the Indian a hat or the facial features altered into a clown or a bearded fellow or a woman. Less often, the bison was reincarnated as a different animal. The reality of this unique time in America is mirrored in the hobo nickels that have survived. Most hobo artists confined their talents to one side of the coin, thereby entwining their personal vision to the theme of open spaces and the Old West embodied in the Buffalo nickel. As one romantic numismatist once opined, “In every infinitesimal scratch, every imperceptible nuance, every metallic wisp of hair or gleaming thread of a hobo’s cap, is a tiny piece of an individual’s character and personal creativity, sealed into the hobo nickel forever.”

For most hobos carving nickels was merely a means to an anonymous end but a select few found hobo nickel artistry to be a calling and became famous. The first was Bertram “Bert” Wiegland, an icy man of rumored high breeding who identified his work by scratching off the “L,” “I” and “Y” from the word “Liberty” on the obverse of the nickel to leave “Bert.” Bert was born in the 1880s and was living the hobo life by World War I days.

One day in a hobo jungle Bert, who was tall and white, met George Washington “Bo” Hughes, who was short, black, and a generation younger, and the two forged a friendship.

Bo, the son of a freed slave in Mississippi, quickly showed a knack for carving nickels. He would crank out hundreds, many featuring hobo friends or one of his eleven brothers and sisters. Most were unsigned but some carried the initials “GH” or “GWH.” Only one coin is known to have been signed “Bo.” By the Great Depression Bo Hughes had emerged as the Edward Hopper of the ride-therails set. He would continue carving for decades, even after suffering a crippling hand injury in 1957. He produced enough self-portraits on five-cent pieces to chronicle his progression from a young man with a fine, full head of hair to a bald, older gentleman. Many of his later hobo nickels bear a rich orange-brown hue from being toted in a tobacco tin. Bo was still carving into the early 1980s when he disappeared from a Florida hobo camp and was never heard from again.

The era of the hobo nickel vanished with him. Production of the Buffalo nickel was halted in 1938 and replaced with the now familiar Thomas Jefferson nickel. Even if the cameo of the author of the Declaration of Independence was considered an inferior canvas the advent of World War II was pulling America out of the Depression and there wasn’t as much time to be whittling on coins. Not as many hobos, not as much time, not as good nickels. A slice of Americana had passed.

ith Jump into July the park sponsors family a family fund day when the park staff and volunteers set up interactive activity stations that highlight Carl Sandburg’s life and work on the farm.

All acitivities including house tours are free on family event days.

Since 2006 the National Park Service at Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site has participated in the Junior Ranger program that leads children from ages 7 to 12 on a journey of self-discovery within the park. Each year more than half a million kids take the Junior Ranger pledge and pursue the coveted badge and certificate by completing the program devised by the park staff.

Family members and teachers are encouraged to provide guidance as potential rangers uncover stories of Carl Sandburg and the treasures of the farm. Activities booklets are available in Spanish also.

The Friends at Carl Sandburg at Connemara stepped up to the challenge to gain local support to kickstart the program by winning a $5,000 matching grant with the generous support of the Community Foundation of Henderson County.

Those first Junior Rangers are now able to consider careers as full-time Jacob Bryant was the first rangers with the National Junior Ranger honored at the Park Service.

Sandburg in September Event David Nagler - Chicago Poems Saturday September 24 Downtown Flat Rock Playhouse 7:00 pm

orthwestern-educated and Brooklyn-based, musician, composer and songwriter David Nagler has worked with the likes of Andrew Bird, Rosanne Cash, Aaron Neville, Fred Armisen, Steve Earle, Graham Parker and John Wesley Harding’s “Cabinet of Wonders” variety show. He is the founder and frontperson of the New York metropolitan area pop group Nova Social.

This year Nagler has debuted Carl Sandburg’s Chicago Poems Project, taking 16 of Sandburg’s poems and imagining them as a song cycle performed by an 11-person ensemble, as well as a host of Chicago guest vocalists, including Jeff Tweedy (of Wilco) Robbie Fulks, Jon Langford & Sally Timms (of the Mekons) Kelly Hogan and more. The compositions draw on a wide variety of American music: folk, jazz, rock, classical, and musical theater.

It was 100 years ago that Sandburg published his seminal work, Chicago Poems, to great acclaim. Written in the wake of the city’s industrial boom and under the specter of the Great War, Chicago Poems contains the hopes and dreams of the era, while also relaying the ideals, desires and frustrations ingrained in everyday life. More than any other, this is the work that helped earn Sandburg the sobriquet, “Poet of the People.”

ack in 2003 the streets of American cities were being invaded by animals on parade - pigs and cows and buffaloes painted by local artists. Jim Kastetter, executive director of Downtown Hendersonville, and his board decided to try the same thing with bears. “If this works,” suggested Kastetter, “in three years we’ll select another kind of critter.”

It indeed worked but the whimsically painted lifesize acylic bears have become an institution in Hendersonville. No other animal need apply. They appear on Main Street (and now the 7th Avenue District) each spring and linger until fall when they are auctioned off to new homes. Over the years the ursine fundraisers have brought over $220,000 into the coffers of local charities.

The Friends of Carl Sandburg sponsor a Bear for the Bearfootin’ Art Walk Auction and in 2016 that is Bear P. ARK - created by Saluda artist and board member Susan Olivari. Susan managed to work dozens of animals into Bear P.ARK. Can you find them all?

This year’s auction is Saturday October 22. If you want to take home Bear P.ARK but can not attend the actual auction you can place a bid by email before October 17. Bidding opens at $800 but you will need to go much higher than that for Bear P.ARK! And what about real bears at the Carl Sandburg Home site? The park has partnered with the Division of Museum and Natural Sciences at North Carolina State University to install wildlife cameras throughout the property to monitor the frequency of black bear visitation to the park and learn a little about their nocturnal comings and goings.

hristmas in the Sandburg household at Connemara was an occasion for singing holiday music and storytelling. The National Park Service re-creates those times with special events on Saturdays around Thanksgiving and Christmas. From Thanksgiving until after the new year the house is decorated in the simple Sandburg style with poinsettias and a traditionally decorated Christmas tree.

Visitors of all ages are encouraged to enjoy hot cider and cookies and participate in vintage holiday craft making. Local musicians and professional storytellers make the season an old-fashioned Appalachian mountain celebration. Also expect to experience the holiday traditions shared

by Cherokee Indian, African-American, and Celtic cultures during Christmas at Connemara. Visitors will find many opportunities to be a part of story sharing and Sandburg-style sing-alongs.

dward Steichen, who happened to be Carl Sandburg’s brother-in-law, was the director of the Museum of Modern Art’s Department of Photography in 1955.

He put together a showing of over 503 photographs from 68 countries and opened the project titled “The Family of Man” in New York where it ran from January until May of that year. Then the project toured the world for eight years where it made stops in 37 countries on six continents being viewed by over 9 million people.

Carl Sandburg wrote the prologue for “The Family of Man” and added his poetic touch to the display by quotes that helped carry the power of Mr. Steichen’s wonderful and haunting photographs. It truly was an exciting collaboration of genius.

The photographs are a statement of what the whole world shares in common no matter how diverse our cultures or religions or governments. We all share this planet and we share a bond between a mother and child in India, or Canada, or Japan, or Russia, young lovers all over the world, the elderly, the poor, our commonalities in print. These are the photographs that Edward Steichen placed in his exhibit and Carl Sandburg complimented in his commentary.

In the Prologue Carl Sandburg wrote, “In the times to come as the past there will be generations taking hold as through loneliness and the genius of struggle has always dwelt in the hearts of pioneers. To the question. ‘What will the story be of the Family of Man across the near or far future?’ some would reply, ‘For the answers read if can the strange and baffling eyes of youth.’”

I accepted this challenge from the great scholar and started my inquiry with one of our local high schools. Every student has a cell phone which is also a camera. Let them study “The Family of Man,” capture the thread that Edward Steichen and Carl Sandburg were trying to convey and then ask themselves what that thread means to them today through their world by taking pictures of the world that they know.

Soon students wanted to know if they could write a poem, make a video, dance or compose their own music and post it as part of their world. They were no longer confined to just photography but had expanded their answer to encapsulate the media that held technology as their mouth piece.

What would they produce? Could we answer Mr. Sandburg’s challenge some 61 years later? Would we answer that challenge?

Good putters talk to the ball and tell it where to go, talking in a monotonously low tone only the ball can hear.

Grant and Lee were both good putters, so was Napoleon.

Pleasant thoughts help while putting.

Putting is related to marksmanship and an instinct for controls and targets. Annie Oakley would have made a good putter.

M

ark McCormack, close personal friend of Arnold Palmer and the world’s first super sports agent, grew up on the south side of Chicago and began playing golf at the age of six as therapy after fracturing his skull in an auto accident. One of his golfing partners was an old man - his godfather - who used to lie prone on the green to line up a putt. “I didn’t know who he was then,” said McCormack long afterwards, “but I realize now that if I would have represented him, Carl Sandburg would have become a famous writer.”

While living in Michigan, Sandburg was known to take long walks on the Lake Michigan dunes, often hitting golf balls. A journalist described him as “a white-haired man in a disreputable old hat, knocking golf balls across the sand.”

From a magazine profile in 1960: “Carl Sandburg sat back on the veranda of his home deep in the Smoky Mountains and talked about golf, goat raising, movies, and the life of Jesus Christ. The grand old man of American literature picked up a 7-iron leaning against the wall and said it had been some time since he had taken his golf game seriously. ‘But,’ the white-haired 82-year old winner of two Pulitzer Prizes said. ‘I often get out on the lawn and knock a few balls around.’”

History of Golf at Connemara Carl Sandburg was carrying on a long tradition of golf when he occupied Connemara after 1945. One of the first things Captain Ellison Adger Smyth did after purchasing the farm in 1900 was to set about building a golf course on the property. Workers recruited horses and oxen to pull the drag pans to create the fairways and wielded shovels and mattocks to hack out and level sites for tees and greens. In those early days of American golf (the first United States Open had only been played five years earlier) both the tees and green were composed of packed sand laid atop hard clay.

The work was carried out between 1900 and 1906. In the end there were nine tees The original scorecard of Captain Smyth’s “home” course. and eight greens. The first green near the back lake was used as the ninth green as well. Tee boxes were just that - twelve-inch boards six feet by ten feet and filled with sand; the greens, typically square in the manner of the day, were about 25 feet in diameter. Maintenance was carried on mostly by sheep with the aide of a horse-drawn three-foot cut mower.

The Connemara Golf Links was the first golf course in Henderson County.

The Captain’s 158-yard opening hole began beneath Connemara and near the barn. It ran towards the “back lake” and was dubbed “The Road”

hole. The course then meandered around the pasture beside the Little River Road before returning to the lake and playing again into the first green to complete the ninehole round.

Captain Smyth had scorecards printed up with the distances and names of each of the holes neatly printed. On the back were “local rules” for the 1,685-yard course.

These included: “A ball driven out of bounds may be dropped on the fair green with the loss of one stroke.”

“A ball falling in a rut cow track, ditch or marsh may be lifted and dropped over the shoulder with the loss of one stroke.”

The course was gone by the time the Sandburgs arrived in Flat Rock but Bill McKay, the Captain’s youngest great-grandson, reported that he remembers seeing the outlines of the golf course long after the Captain’s death.
