The Palette
I am beginning this article riding on my “High” at the culmination of our annual fundraiser, Evening of Art. It was held earlier this evening. I realize by the time you read this, it will be “old news,” but I want everyone involved to know how important you were in making this an event that people will be talking about.
All the months of planning, making baskets and decisions about which art to display or donate to the silent action are done. Tonight, we packed up and are moving out from our remarkable venue at the Hemet Library back to our gallery on Harvard Street. We would like to thank the City of Hemet and the library, as well as our Hemet Police volunteers for allowing us this opportunity.

A big “Shout out” to Beverly Johnson and her Evening of Art Committee. Beverly had a vision and is a strong leader. She has put in untold hours organizing the amazing team which put on the best Evening of Art yet. I will not try and name all the team leads/members here—you know who you are, and I hope you are taking pride in your accomplishments! You worked for months planning this event to make it an over-the-top night. You were successful at making it happen.
A big player was Dr. Bob, who re-designed the floor plan for a more open feeling. He also gets credit for all the great signage throughout the library and in town. If you see Dr. Bob, please know that not only has he worked side by side with Beverly planning the event, putting it up and taking it down, but is also our amazing gallery facil-

17th Annual Evening of Art Labeled a Success!
Congratulations to All Who Participated!
Our 17th annual fundraising event was a success! A main focus was on highlighting the talents of this year’s class of seven local high school participants. 72 entries in Art, Photography and 3D arts were displayed in the gala setting of the Hemet Public library.
For many, this was the first time they had exhibited their art. We awarded 9 scholarships in the amount of $500 each for 1st place, $300 each for 2nd, and $200 for 3rd place winners. All of the students said they planned to save theirs, many of them specifically for art school.
Our thanks to the community for all their support!
Beverly Johnson, Chairperson, Evening of Art

ities person. He is assisted by another can-do member, Art Majerus. What a team!
I would also like to mention Tina Batchelder, from Hemet Unified, who has been instrumental in our collaboration with the district. She has worked tirelessly with the teachers to bring student art into our gallery and to our Evening of Art competition. This year we had over 70 student entries and were able to add both 3D and photography categories to our scholarships. The student artists, our future, are what the Evening of Art is all about. HVAA gave $3,000 to tonight’s event and with its success, will give more to our next generation of artists in 2025!
Thanks, too, to the wonderful judges who came in, as volunteers, to select the winning pieces. There were two for each category—a professional in that category and a member of HVAA who works in that medium (media). I have no idea how they were able to select from the diverse and excellent pieces the students entered.
I hope you enjoyed the great demo artists who volunteered their evening to share their skills. Realize these helpers didn’t even get a chance to enjoy what was going on beyond their easels! Thank you all for donating your talent to make this evening special!
We are so blessed to be living in Hemet where art is supported by our city, our school district, members, families, and friends. I have recently been invited to be a part of the City of Hemet’s ad hoc committee working to create more art and culture in our city. We are all about working together to promote art and share it with our community.
Tonight, we had a full audience at the Hemet Library as we gifted our money to high school students—just amazing talent! I hope that everyone was able to enjoy the student art at the event, and/or see it displayed at our gallery during the month of April.
Our neighbor on Harvard Street, the Willdebietz Music Conservatory provided wonderful music during the event. Again,
great collaboration with community and fellow artists. We are in this together. Keeping culture alive and important to the next generation is crucial. Check out our neighbor at Willdebietz.com.
There was a plethora of baskets for us to put our raffle tickets in. I know we all had fun deciding which we wanted the most. I need to give a shout-out to Linda Baranek and Lynn Throckmorton. Both went above and beyond and helped members to put baskets together in a very professional way. I’m happy to report that members’ efforts brought in $7,587 this year!
With the Evening of Art now behind us, we are poised to move on to our next challenges. Please remember we count on our membership not just to participate in the fun, but also to help keep our gallery and studio open for our public to see and enjoy. Can you give us a few hours to keep our doors open to the public? Are you willing to share your skills with others? We have had so many people come in and ask about classes. With all your wonderful talent, are you willing to teach a class or workshop? Please let Patty Greco or me know so we can help you plan it!
Well, on with 2024, positive change, growth, and more success!
Congrats, Beverly and your team, for a job well done!

HVAA Secures $10,000 RCNAF Grant
From Riverside County District 5
HVAA submitted a Riverside County Nonprofit Assistance Fund (RCNAF) grant application to Riverside County District 5 in February. Alison Wieman did most of the writing, while Sheryl Cooley ferreted out the materials required to be sent with it. Apart from the hassle in locating all the documentation, the most difficult thing was responding to the questions and written requirements on the online form itself. The information
typed into it kept “disappearing,” requiring endless hours of laying it in again. Finally, with the help of the grant administrator (Inland Empire Community United Way) representative who reached out to us late in the process (and who, by the way, deserves to be sainted), Alison slipped the application in just under the wire!

Student Corner
Saturday, April 13th, HVAA awarded scholarships to 9 students from various high schools in recognition of their artistic talent and potenial. In the initial round, teachers submitted their students’ art. In the second round, the art was judged in a blind competition, the resulting list
whittled down to three winners in each of three categories: Fine Art, 3D Art, and Photography. Their decisions, they said, were difficult as so many pieces were submitted by so very teens with such great talent. As a result, there were several honorable mentions.

At the Gallery
From the Gallery Director
I continue to monitor and make small changes to the gallery. The revamp of the cards area will hopefully increase sales for those paying monthly and the addition of a Black & White Photography Section for the monthly contest will give photographers a new challenge and hopefully add to the gallery income.

I have several panels and boutique areas available for May at this time. You are reminded that if you want to reserve a panel do so by emailing me at sawdustman@mac.com or texting to 619-992-6532. I will reply with what is available and confirm your selection the same way. For the Boutique the sign up board is still in the gallery.

Artist’s Statement
May’s Featured Artist: Collin Sample
My paintings serve as a form of resistance against racism by celebrating the profound beauty and resilience inherent in black people and their culture. Just as sandpaper smooths wood and water shapes rocks, hardship and adversity refine, revealing a beauty that demands recognition and celebration.
Through acrylic paint on canvas, I explore the essence of blackness—its beauty, resilience and cultural richness. I am Collin Sample, and my art is a testament to the strength and vibrancy of the black community.
textured objects, each piece takes on a life of its own, embodying the essence of its subject matter.
My art is an extension of my culture, a vehicle for social commentary that abstracts facts and experiences into visual narratives. As a black man in America, I navigate a reality shaped by the pervasive impact of racism. While some may perceive these experiences as surreal or akin to a fever dream, for the African American community, they are an undeniable reality.
My art is an extension of my culture, a vehicle for social commentary that abstracts facts and experiences into visual narratives.
Utilizing unconventional skin tones and vibrant color palettes, my paintings evoke deep emotions reflective of the environments from which they arise. With techniques ranging from acrylic paint to spray paint stencils and

In celebrating the experiences, resilience and cultural richness of black people, my art seeks to provoke thought, inspire dialogue and foster understanding in a world too often marred by prejudice and division.

Ever since I could remember, I always considered myself an artist. My family would always get me something art related for my birthday and Christmas whether it be markers, drawing pads or Lego® building blocks. Being around my siblings and parents have helped me stay motivated throughout the years.
A self-taught artist, originally I aspired to become a comic book or tattoo artist. Starting off I only worked with pen and marker but decided to work towards painting after my aunt Teena said I could have my art in a gallery. I am open to using all forms of media, but I focus specifically on acrylic paint.

Right now I am in a transitional period. I plan to go to gradschool next year. My goals are the Art Institute of Chicago and Pratt Institute in New York.
The painters who have influenced me the most have to be James Jean, Etam Cru, Hush, Kehinde Wiley, and Lisa Yuska-
