VERTEX LEADS CHARITY FUNDRAISING Vertex are celebrating 15 years in operation this year and Byte Night is celebrating 15 years of IT professionals changing young people’s lives. Each year hundreds of individuals and teams from across the information, technology and business communities spend a night exposed to the elements in a bid to raise sponsorship and awareness of Action for Children’s work. They help to prevent youth homelessness through early intervention by ensuring that young people across the UK are given the support they need before it’s too late. Starting the fundraising early, Vertex hosted a Charity Race Night event at Hemel Hempstead Town Cricket Club on the 7th September. The club kindly relinquished all venue hire costs, and a vast array of generous prizes were donated from Vertex and their various associates, staff and clientele, as well as numerous kind-hearted local businesses. Top prizes included; •a signed Portsmouth FC football shirt, •lifetime golf membership and five rounds with Top Golf, •day passes for groups of four at Shendish Manor and Luton Hoo, •a family pass for Woburn Safari, •tickets for miscellaneous shows and cinema

screenings, •photoshoots of varying values with Infront Photography, •a meal at the Toby Carvery, •mobile phones, •event tickets, •and perishable goods. They raised £1,205.01 collectively that night, which Vertex matched to give £2,410.02. On the 5th October the Vertex team joined over 1,000 industry professionals for the yearly sleep-out. The evening was kindly hosted by Norton Rose who provided use of their atrium for speeches, quizzes and a bar. The team were then treated to a play by 6 young individuals whose lives had been changed by Action for Children, which really helped bring closer to home the importance of this cause. The team were then banished to a night under the stars, and, thanks to the bitter elements, were soaked through by the morning! The team developed a newfound sympathy for those individuals who are forced to endure this hardship every day, and were pleased that their efforts would be contributing to changing this forever. The sleep-outs across the UK this year have raised over £700,000 thus far and counting. Vertex supporters have contributed an extra £340.00 since then, bringing our running total to £2,750.02! Sponsorship is still open, so any further donations would be greatly appreciated. The team look forward to getting involved with such events next year.

Autumn Is Here Summer is definitely over, autumn has a firm grip (the silver birch leaves at Riversdale Cottages are turning bright yellow) and the Head Gardener is thinking about winter and plants to maintain as much interest as possible. Hanging baskets are being filled with winter flowering violas, tall upright heathers, and crocus bulbs to come later to remind us that it won’t be winter forever. Similarly pots are planted up and placed close to the house where they are seen, or at the bottom of the garden where passers-by on the towpath can also get some cheer from our winter colour.

Keith Symonds Head Gardener

It’s not just about the pots and hanging baskets. Other plants are chosen for the garden to provide winter interest. In the front garden is a winter flowering jasmine next to the window. Again, people passing in the street can see the bright yellow flowers, and we can see it from indoors. The viburnam has already started to flower, and butterflies are enjoying it’s sunny aspect and nectar from the flowers. A mahonia throws out bright yellow sprays, like fingers reaching out from every branch, providing a backdrop of colour for this part of the garden that can be seen from the canal towpath. The flowers provide berries that will be a favourite of blackbirds next summer – another reminder of warmer times to come. It also makes us think of the hard times that birds suffer during the winter. Birds love plants with berries on them in the winter. The cotoneaster has bright red berries and dark green foliage - a classic Christmas colour scheme! During the harshest weather fieldfares build up their courage to come in from the fields, and we watch them as they forage for food on the bushes. Other non-flowering bushes and plants can provide interest. Grasses and flaxes throw their spikey leaves out and keep their colour. Heucheras come in so many different coloured varieties, and these can be useful additions in the pots and hanging baskets in case too many bright pansies threaten to dazzle. After reading this maybe winter won’t seem quite so daunting and drab after all! Go to the web-site to read more gardening tips and tales from the diary, at: www.apsleygardeningsolutions.co.uk For any advice on your garden, contact Apsley Gardening Solutions and speak to Keith Symonds on the number below: 07830 600845

Witness Appeal After Thieves Target Elderly Man Can you help police find thieves who targeted elderly victim? Police have released this CCTV image as part of their investigations into a theft which took place in Hemel Hempstead. They urgently need the people pictured or anyone who knows them to contact police. The awful offence took place on Thursday, September 20th between 11.30am and 12pm on Parkwood Drive in Chaulden. The victim, a man in his late 80’s, was approached by two teenagers who offered to help him with his shopping. One of the offenders then took his trolley, whilst the second offender stole the victim’s wallet. The offenders are described as two Asian males and between 16 and 17 years old. Officers are keen to speak with the two people pictured in the CCTV as they were in the shop at the same time as the victim and may have vital information as part of their investigation.

Mini-Pulses Green light given to inpatient mental health unit Plans to create an inpatient mental health unit in Slippers Hill will go ahead after a meeting of Dacorum Borough Council’s development control. Under the scheme the St Paul’s unit, which currently provides day care services, will be turned into accommodation for 18 patients. Residents had written letters to the committee to voice concerns over noise and parking. Neighbour Mark Humphrey told councillors: “There is a noise issue.

During the day there are quite distressing noises and foul language coming from the courtyards. At weekends a lot of children tend to play in that area.” But councillors were supportive of the application from Herts Partnership NHS Trust. Councillor Fiona Guest said: “It will provide much-needed inpatient facilities. One in four people suffer a mental illness in their lifetime who might need a facility like this.”

Savile Scandal Reaches Hertfordshire! Herts Police have been informed about three incidents involving the disgraced DJ Jimmy Savile. Details have been passed to the Metropolitan Police, where the investigation into sexual assault allegations against Savile is being lead. The BBC star died last year. In a statement Herts police said: “We can confirm that we have received information about three incidents involving Jimmy Savile. “Information has been passed to the Metropolitan Police Service, who are leading on this enquiry.” The head of the Met’s Specialist Crime Investigations, Commander Peter Spindler, said: “We can now confirm that we have received information from the public that suggest allegations against

Jimmy Savile span six decades with reports starting in 1959 up to and including 2006. “Having now had the opportunity to review progress one week on I have revised my estimate of the number of likely victims to be about 60. Once again I want to thank those who have come forward and reassure them, and anyone else who contacts us, they will be listened to.”

Hemel Celebrity Caught Cheating

Vinnie Jones & wife reunited at Shendish Manor after scandal.

Hollywood star Vinnie Jones’ wife Tanya, flew back to the UK earlier this month from the couple’s Los Angeles home for a showdown with her husband. The pair met at Shendish Manor in Apsley, where Vinnie is currently staying after he was caught on camera with Russian singer. Pictures and videos emerged of Vinny and blonde Lama Safonova on the streets of Moscow holding hands and in a passionate embrace. They were then seeing taking a taxi to a near-by hotel, where they entered together. Vinnie defended himself saying he felt he’d been set up. He claims that Safonova is the girlfriend of his Russian interpreter who was also staying at the hotel. He was quoted as saying, ‘Her boyfriend was the interpreter so it’s just a joke. I’ve seen [the pictures] I know what they look like. I met her for 15 minutes, just went for a drink at the party and that was it. She was there and my interpreter introduced me to her as his girlfriend. His name was Oliver.’ Vinnie says the boyfriend then disappeared. ‘We got a lift back to the hotel because we were staying in the same hotel – that was the stitch-up. When we got to the hotel, the boyfriend was in the foyer.’

Vinnie and Tanya, who used to have a home on Box Lane, have two children together. Vinnie has said ‘I totally love my wife Tanya and my two children. I am very sorry and my only concern right now is them.’ A friend in LA, where the couple live in a £4 million home in the Holly-wood Hills, said: ‘Tanya’s upset that Vinnie has been so stupid. She’s mortified by this. But she loves him and will stand by him.’ Although Safonova has neither confirmed or denied the story, her publicist said: ‘Lama refuses to comment on anything to do with her relationship with Vinnie Jones.’
