Lizard man rewarded HELSTON VALET & DETAILING for 53 years spent CENTRE bell ringing Way more than A local resident from The Lizard has been recognised for 53 years spent ringing the bells at St. Wynwallow church, The Lizard.

John Harris was born in The Lizard and during his almost 70 years has volunteered for a number of different organisations which includes the RNLI at The Lizard lifeboat station, the Holman – Climax Male Voice Choir and has been a member of the church bell ringers since 1961.

Swallows of Helston host End of Summer Showcase Laughter and applause filled the gym floor at Swallows of Helston on August 23rd when the gym held an End of Summer Showcase, the culmination of their first Summer of Fun. Over the past 4 weeks gymnasts old and new took classes in Ballet, Jazz, Street Dance and Acrogym. New gymnasts were offered taster sessions and everyone was encouraged to ‘Bring a Friend to Gym’. All of the gymnasts had a great time at these extra sessions learning new skills and making new friends.

23, took part in the Showcase. The show started with a dazzling performance from the Swallows Display Team who performed their latest dance, which they recently performed at The Hall for Cornwall. This was followed by performances by the Pre-school children dressed as ladybirds and bees, an incredible trampet and tumbling display by the Recreational gymnasts, a Sing and Dance along with the Development girls and a stunning dance performance by the Morgan/Hickman-Jones family.

The highlight of the show was undoubtedly the Boys v Girls gym-off where it was decided once and for all who competes on the hardest apparatus. The Elite boys, dressed as girls, competed on the floor, vault, beam, asymmetric bars and range and conditioning.

The Elite girls, dressed as boys, then competed on the high bar, parallel bars, rings, floor and PPP. After much laughter the audience decided on the winners and the girls just pipped the boys to the post this year.

The Display Team brought the show to a close with a spectacular dance,

trampet and tumbling routine.

The club said a sad farewell to retiring coach Tonie Powell who has been a member of the coaching team for many years. The show was followed by a family BBQ. All the Trustees would like to say a massive thank you to all the coaches, gymnasts, volunteers and their families for making the Summer of Fun such a success.

Currently there are six ringers at St. Wynwallow church. We ring for all sorts of different occasions and also at a number of different churches in Cornwall. Recently Hedley and I helped out at Wendron church’.

Over the years John has volunteered for a number of different organisations in Cornwall. He was a member of the HolmanClimax Male Voice Choir from 1976 until 2012 and visited America four times with the choir.

John started singing in

the church choir at 12 years old and this lead onto him joining the St. Keverne choir from 1968-1976 when he moved to the world famous Holman-Climax choir. John said ‘I started at Sunday school when I was only about 6 years old and at 12 I started singing in the church choir. I moved onto St. Keverne and then the Holman-Climax Male Voice Choir and I really enjoyed every minute’.

John is still a volunteer with the RNLI. He is a Deputy Launching Authority at The Lizard lifeboat station. He has held a number of positions at the station

including being a member of the crew and was involved in a number of difficult rescues which included the rescue of the yacht ‘Heptarchy’ with 12 people onboard which got into difficulties 40 miles south of Lizard Point, when the lifeboat was at sea for 11 hours, towing the yacht back to the Helford river in hurricane force winds.

John’s extraordinary service with the RNLI was recognised in 1987 when he received his long service badge and in 2012 John received his second bar to his badge in recognition of over 45 years service at the station.

Racing stalwart steps down BANGER racing chief to step down after more than twenty years in charge of popular race meetings.

Formed by Dougie Bray in the 1980s, the aim of Cornwall Raceways was simple - to promote Grass/Dirt Motor Car Racing for the family on a budget and to have a bit of fun and everyone involved over the years will agree that was exceeded.

However this year has turned out to be the final season with Dougie at the helm as he will be retiring after the final meet on Sunday September 14th which promises to be a real fun day as everyone thanks Dougie and son Clinton for all the hard work over the years.

They have seen great success with their regular meets at their grass track near Goonhilly with huge

turnouts both of competitors and people paying to watch and so it is hoped a big crowd is there for this final meet of the Brays.

This weekend also has a meet after

the Bank Holiday cancellation. It is the traditional charity meet with people able to pay to go in the cars with all money raised going to St Johns Ambulance.

Toyota FCV programme boosted by fuel tank deal Toyota has reached an important production staging post in its programme to launch its first fuel cell vehicle, gaining government-approved status to build and inspect highpressure hydrogen tanks.

Having met the stringent criteria required by Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry – the first manufacturer to do so – Toyota can now increase production of tanks that can be used for safe storage of hydrogen fuel at up to 70MPa (700bar) pressure. This keeps the company firmly on track for the market introduction of its Fuel Cell Sedan in Japan,

Japanese law requires all pressurised gas containers and accessories to be typecertified and made available for official safety inspections during the manufacturing process. Until now, Toyota’s hydrogen tanks also had to undergo a further inspection before being installed in a vehicle. The inspection schedules had a direct impact on its inventory control and the manufacturing timetable for Toyota’s FCV prototypes.

By being able to selfinspect the tanks it makes, Toyota can now streamline

its FCV manufacturing process, while maintaining the highest quality and safety standards. As well as improving efficiency and productivity, this is also expected to help reduce the cost of FCVs. To gain official approval (KHKS 0102) it has had to meet 194 requirements and demonstrate an appropriate high level of quality management. It prepared a quality manual and a set of inspection rules to provide a fully documented hydrogen tank quality management system that goes beyond its own operation to include affiliated parts suppliers.

AP50 added to Suzuki vintage parts Ford launches limited-edition “Unleashed” clothing to mark start of all-new 2015 Ford Mustang production The first all-new Ford Mustang rolls off the line today at Ford’s Flat Rock Assembly Plant, marking production of the sixthgeneration pony car.

Vauxhall releases Corsa spec ahead of Paris world premiere Vauxhall has announced further technical details on its all-new Corsa ahead of its world premiere at next month’s 2014 Paris Motor Show (4th – 19th October).

One of the highlights of the New Corsa’s engine line-up will be the fresh-to-market 1.0-litre, 3-cylinder ECOTEC Direct Injection Turbo petrol.

Meeting the latest stringent Euro 6 emissions regulations, the ECOTEC will be available with either 90PS or 115PS outputs, each of which achieves 170Nm of torque from just 1,800rpm. This is particularly evident during acceleration from 50mph to 75pm, an important speed range for overtaking, when this compact powerhouse belies its size by delivering strong power from low rpm. The Corsa with 115PS makes this transition in just 10.4 seconds.

Vauxhall’s powerful new, 1.0 ECOTEC Direct Injection Turbo fitted with Start/Stop technology as standard also boasts excellent economy: the 90PS three-door version con-

sumes just 54.7mpg on the combined cycle. There are also Euro 6 compliant 1.2 and 1.4-litre naturallyaspirated units with 70PS and 90PS. In addition, completely revised, more refined and now also Euro 6 compliant 1.3 CDTi engines with 75PS and 95PS expand the Corsa offer on the diesel side. New-generation turbo chargers ensure smooth driving and acceleration at low engine speeds with minimal noise generation. Both versions come with fuel-saving Start/Stop technology fitted as standard.

At launch, the most frugal Corsa diesel version – with 95PS, 5-speed manual transmission and braking energy recuperation system – can reduce the three-door model‘s CO2 emissions down to 85g/km and fuel consumption down to 87.8mpg in the combined cycle.

Pricing will be announced on 2nd October with first models going in to production later this year.

With the abolition of the vehicle tax disc taking effect from 1 October and a flurry of confused people asking about the situation through social media, leading road safety charity the Institute of Advanced Motorists has taken the opportunity to clarify the rules.

Basically you will still need to buy vehicle tax to keep any vehicle on the road. You will still receive a reminder from the DVLA, and you can continue paying using the previous methods. However now you will be able to pay by continuous direct debit – meaning there will never be a risk of forgetting to pay, and driving an untaxed car.

The direct debit will continue as long as there is a valid MOT for the vehicle.

You can apply online to tax your vehicle using the 16 digit reference code from your vehicle tax renewal reminder

(V11) or 11 digit reference number from your log book (V5C).

One major change the new road tax rules has created is that vehicle tax can no longer be transferred with the vehicle if you sell it – often an added incentive when purchasing a vehicle. If after 1 October you sell a vehicle and have notified the DLVA, you will automatically receive a refund for any full months remaining on that vehicle tax.

You will now always have to buy new vehicle tax when you purchase a new or used vehicle.

As of 1 October, you will no longer be obliged to display a paper tax disc on your car – so you are free to remove and destroy it. However you might want to keep it as a souvenir, if you are feeling sentimental over the disappearance of an iconic part of UK motoring life!

Simon Best, IAM chief executive, said: “As with all new systems, it will take a little time to get used to. But the move to allow people to set up a direct debit will mean greater peace of mind for many, so your vehicle will never be untaxed.

“However, moving more of these processes online will make things very difficult for those without regular internet access – as ever, the poor and elderly could lose out.

“And it will be interesting to see if some people think that without a visible tax disc it will be easier simply not to buy one. We’ll see in time how effective this has been in catching those who avoid paying.”

Citroën CX celebrates its 40th anniversary Citroën unveiled the CX 2000 for the first time at the Paris Motor Show in 1974. It quickly established a reputation for exceptional comfort, advanced ergonomics and impeccable road holding, claiming the ‘Car of the Year’ award, ‘Safety Prize’ and ‘Award Auto Style’ in its first year on sale.

Designed by Robert Opron, the CX was a two-box saloon, measuring 4.63m in length. It was the first saloon of its type in Citroën’s history to be specified with a diesel engine. With the CX, Citroën was able to compete in the European tourer market with an alternative to petrol engines. One year after the 1973 oil crisis, Citroën was able to demonstrate its innovative capabilities with engines that would meet high standards in terms of driving pleasure and lower fuel consumption. The aerodynamics of the CX played a

key role in achieving its impressive levels of fuel efficiency and the acronym CX in itself illustrated the vehicle’s low drag coefficient – Cx being French for the aerodynamic coefficient Cd. Over the next few years, Citroën continued to upgrade the CX with further technological improvements, including an estate version in 1975, a 2400 GTi electronic injection sports version in 1977 – considered as the fastest French tourer of its time – and a Prestige version in 1978, which was 28cm longer than the original car.

Recognised for its style and bold technical choices, the CX was also an exceptionally comfortable car. It inherited the constantheight hydropneumatic suspension of the DS as well as the power-operated selfcentring steering system seen on the SM in 1970. The same high standards of comfort were apparent in the

subsequent innovations provided for an improved driver experience. For example, the C-matic torque converter did away with the clutch pedal, freeing up space for greater driver comfort. Also, the interior design placed particular emphasis on convenience, with a futuristic driving position, enabling the driver to access all the controls without having to take their hands off the steering wheel.

Further reflecting the innovations of the original car, the Citroën CX was the first French car to be fitted with ABS brakes in 1985.

The CX was a huge market success, selling more than 1.2 million units globally up to 1991. Today, the Citroën CX lives on through the events and meetings organised by many owners clubs around the world, including the CX Club de France and l’Amicale de France in its home country.
