Stiff Achey Feet Can Feel Great Again Introducing ‘Foot Mobilisation Therapy’

Many people have foot and ankle problems because their joints get stiff.

These problems range from arthritis to plantar fasciitis heel pain.

There’s a treatment most people have never heard about which restores feet and ankles back to normal with very little effort. It’s called foot mobilisation therapy. Or FMT. Steve Bloor has been using it successfully in his practice for over 20 years.

Foot Mobilisation Therapy Helps: 1. Releases connective tissue restrictions of hypo-mobile joints, increasing the joint range of motion in stiff joints & works to release collagenous joint restrictions to restore healthy joint surface relationships.

2. Stimulates synovial fluid production to help keep joints lubricated and provide cartilage nutrition.

Cartilage and joint health relies on regular loading & movement.

3. Restores the optimal neurophysiology of the joints and foot in general.

All the of the joint ligaments in the foot & ankle are laden with mechanoreceptors to keep the brain informed for proprioception.

Proprioception is the sense of

self-movement and body position.

It is sometimes described as the “sixth sense”. It’s how your brain subconsciously monitors what every part of our body is doing at any moment. Proprioception is mediated by proprioceptors, mechanosensory nerve endings located within muscles, tendons, and ligaments around joints.

Our feet are one of the areas of our bodies with highest concentrations of these specialised nerve endings to enable balance and optimal movement during gait & posture.

When the joints in our feet work slightly out of line, as occurs with flat feet or dropped arches, these mechanosensory nerves don’t work properly, often leading to the neurological state of sensitisation which makes people more sensitive to pain with less provocation, especially in chronic conditions.

FMT stimulates the joint mechanoreceptors to reduce sensitisation and reduce muscle guarding. This results in pain relief and more comfortable joint movement.

In Summary: 1. FMT releases joint restrictions in hypo-mobile joints.

2. FMT stimulates synovial fluid helping arthritic joints.

3. FMT provides pain relief through neuro-physiological stimuli.

FMT works with or without orthotic therapy, and can be incorporated into other therapies, such as exercise therapy with outstanding success.

Following FMT you will usually feel a sense of increased joint flexibility.

Occasionally some patients feel a slight ache in the area around the joints which were mobilised, which lasts for a few hours. You should NOT NEED to take any painkillers, but some people do.

If we have also used PBM Therapy (Low Level Laser Therapy) it is advisable to avoid NSAID’s (non steroidal antiinflammatory drugs like Ibuprofen) as this can reduce the effect of the PBM Therapy.

Many people feel the benefit of the FMT straight away, but it’s effects can diminish slightly a few days after the initial treatment. Most people need at least two FMT sessions, sometimes three, with the additional FMT sessions only requiring a short amount of time.

Most patients will continue to do well indefinitely and will require no more treatment. A small number of patients require regular FMT sessions to maintain their pain relief long-term, but without the need for pharmaceutical drugs and their associated side-effects.

Tourism Minister’s fact-finding walkabout in West Cornwall

This week’s coronavirus announcement regarding changes to restrictions impact Cornwall just as much as other parts of the UK. Key changes: Pubs, bars and restaurants to close at 22:00 BST and restricted to table service only • People should work from home wherever possible • Face masks compulsory for bar staff and non-seated customers, shop workers and waiters • Limit on guests at weddings reduced from 30 to 15 • Plans to allow fans to return to sporting events paused • "Rule of six" now applies to indoor team sports • Fines for not wearing masks or following rules increased to £200 for first offence •

There are different approaches to responding to the climate emergency.

I prefer the response that says 'let’s find ways to improve our own environment and work with MPs and Government to secure the legislation and support needed'.

Which is why I’m a fan of

the Helston Climate Action Group. I ‘unearthed’ a less-practised skill on Saturday by helping build raised beds for their Incredible Edible Helston Community Garden.

Anyone who wants to get involved can help tend the garden to grow fresh produce for the community.

More doctors and nurses choosing Cornwall!

Recent figures show a significant increase in the number of doctors (up 68) and nurses (up 187) working in the NHS in Cornwall. Doctor numbers have increased by nearly 10% to 800 – and the number of nurses, including health visitors, has gone to 2,336 – a rise of 8.7%.

This is very welcome news and shows that the Government’s NHS People Plan is paying off in terms of strengthening and improving our NHS

services.

I was glad to have played a small part in this, partly through my membership of the Health and Social Care Select Committee as the People Plan was being rolled out and also, locally, through helping to organise an NHS+ Jobs Fair at Penwith College last year when we were able to showcase more than 300 career opportunities in Cornwall alone.

The reality is that cases of coronavirus are lower than other parts of the UK but sadly the disease is on the rise across the Duchy to 28 cases in every 100,000 over a 7 day period ending September 22nd. Hopefully we will all abide by the revised guidance and see an end to the spread of this dreadful disease.

My Parents Risk Freezing This Winter!

ON SUNDAY MORNING I had a phone call from my Mum. She was in a panic. They had almost run out of oil for the central heating!

How did it happen? I asked. They have a real time monitoring screen that was installed into their kitchen last year. It tells my parents exactly how much oil is left in the tank. And when it is getting low it starts flashing red. My Mum explained: the pepper grinder was in front of the monitor blocking out the warning signs. So, my parents have a tumultuous few days while waiting for the oil to be topped up, freezing, shaking, and all because of a misplaced pepper grinder.

You can imagine those clever scientists who invented and designed this innovative technology, proudly an-

nouncing, “Now, with this nifty bit of kit we have created, no one will ever again run out of oil!”

Well, they didn’t bargain for my Mum and the miscreant pepper grinder. A simple love of sprinkling of ground pepper onto food, and lives are put at risk. What a tragedy. What a catastrophe.

It hasn’t been a great week for my parents with technology. My Step Dad’s phone went, unexpectedly, on the blink. He rushed to the mobile phone shop in Helston and pleaded for their help. The very helpful owner looked perplexed. That is, until he pressed the power button, and all was okay! Now, I can’t talk.

A few weeks ago, one morning, my water electric combo heater stopped

functioning. It runs the hot water and the central heating. I couldn’t have a shower. I phoned up an electrician client of mine. He asked if there were any lights on. Nothing. Oh, this doesn’t sound good. He came round with all of his equipment, mentally preparing for a lengthy job. He examined it, picked up the loose plug, and put it back in the electric socket. I had accidentaly unplugged it so that I could plug in the washing machine. You must think I am stupid? I sheepishly asked him. I was expecting a polite, “No, I see this all the time. It is not uncommon”. Instead he replied, “YES”, to my embarrassment.

As always pop in and see me if you have any questions and the like. You can be assured that my accountancy skills are a little better than my

proficiency with anything electrical. I must at this stage thank my Mum and Step Dad. I was struggling to think what to write this week, that is, until they came to my rescue. A big thank you, and keep up your good work!
