Breage mum takes on marathon challenge AN INSPIRATIONAL mum has vowed to run a marathon in aid of a local school despite being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis.

Gemma Langford from Breage will take on the gruelling Eden Project Marathon this Sunday and aims to raise £1,000 towards a new building at Breage Bright Sparks Pre-School.

She said: “Just six months after giving birth to my eldest son I was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis.

With the determination to fight, the love for my children and the passion to help improve their future I will be running the marathon to help raise funds towards this community project.”

Classic Bake Off raises funds for cancer charity

A HOLIDAY letting agency has hosted a Great British Bake Off-style event for budding bakers in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support.

Staff from Classic Cottages in Helston organised the event as part of the cancer charity’s World’s Biggest Coffee Morning on September

27.

Employees were invited to enter a homebaked cake into the competition and raised £600 for the charity.

Organiser Katie Chown, a cancer patient who only recently returned to work following treatment, said: “I wanted to come back to work with a celebratory bang so a day of cake seemed like a good motivation. Plus, it’s a great distraction from current treatment. I’m in awe of the efforts everyone has gone to with their baking, thanks to all involved.”

Staff member Stef Parr provided the icing on the cake by seeing off competition to win the Best Cake award, with a three-tiered pistachio and lime cake baked in memory of her father who was supported by Macmillan last year.

Martial arts centre gets extra kick RGB BUILDING SUPPLIES has chosen the Helston Community Martial Arts Centre as a finalist in its Well Built Community Fund, and it’s now down to a public vote to see if it is chosen to win a new kitchen worth £9,700.

The centre, based at Wendron Street in Helston, is one of 10 finalists from across the region chosen by the building suppliers to go through to

the public vote.

Votes can be cast between October 8 and 22 by visiting RGB’s Facebook page and liking the photo that represents the group they would like to win. Alternatively, votes can be cast by emailing RGB@pmwcom.co.uk and adding the name of the group being voted for in the subject line.

The “Tip-Top Tipping ” Scandal!

The Government last week, at their Party Conference, made a momentous announcement on tipping (I assume to deflect media attention away from the “Boris Show”). What was this earth shattering tipping initiative? Well, all of the tips at restaurants must go to the workers. I assumed that the tips did go to the waiters anyway and no new law would be required; I am naive like that! To hear that the owners siphon off their cut, that is scandalous and should be stopped. So Bumble Bee will use our, not inconsiderable, political weight to support this proposal.

But it got me thinking! When they say workers, who do they actually mean? Waiters? Yes, of course! The Cooks? Perhaps! But what about the other workers who all make an effort to make the whole customer experience a memorable one? What about the cleaners? No one would eat at a dirty restaurant, so the cleaners should get their slice of the tips. Does this happen today? I doubt it, but it should.

It reminded me of when I worked in Papua New Guinea at the National Airline. Air Niugini. You may of heard of Air Niugini recently. It was in the news last week when one of their planes went off the runway in Mi-

cronesia and plunged into a lagoon.

Well, I worked at this airline for three years. I joined as the Treasury Manager in 2005 when the airline was insolvent; it had no money. My job was to protect the cash, help make the airline profitable. It was an exciting time in my life.

Well, one of the proposals was to cut the salaries of all the high earners by 10%. I had to stand up and make a presentation to all the high earners at the airline and persuade them to accept it, to accept a pay cut.

Most of them were OK with the proposal, as they knew it would help to save their jobs. But not all! The Pilots were vehemently against it, and their argument was that without them the planes would not fly, they were special. And indeed it is true that pilots are needed to fly a plane. That is self evident.

But I argued with them. I said that without the Engineers the planes would not fly either. Without the flight attendants, without the ground crew and yes, without the cleaners, the planes would not fly. I even went as far as to say that without the beancounters in my Finance Department, the planes would not fly (as if we did not pay the suppliers they would not, well, supply their goods and services). In short, I was arguing that in any

organisation everyone has to play their part. It is a team, and everyone is no more valuable than anyone else. And that is why the cleaners for a restaurant should also get some of the tips.

Lastly, it is bizarre that we are expected to tip in a restaurant, but when buying clothes, we do not even consider tipping the sales assistant for giving exceptional customer service, for going the extra mile. Why don’t we? So next time you are in Peacocks buying something, do the decent thing and put a £5 note in the palm of the sales assistant’s hand. Or what about your accountant? When was the last time you tipped your accountant when they completed your tax return and provided exceptional customer service? Shame on you!

Warning as crime wave hits town Increasing number of break-ins causes alarm in Helston RESIDENTS and business owners are reminded to be vigilant following a spate of burglaries around Helston over recent weeks.

Several break-ins have been reported around the town including at a restaurant, hair salon, Boots Pharmacy, Superdrug and Outback Trading, yet it is not known if the crimes are connected.

The Rodney Inn at Meneage Street was also targeted with several charity collection boxes stolen containing several hundred pounds.

Thankfully, CCTV cameras inside the premises managed to capture footage of the culprit and

the video has been viewed more than 15,000 times on the Helston Advertiser Facebook page (@helstonadvertiser). Anyone with information about any of the crimes is being asked to contact police.

It is bad enough to break into someone else’s property, but to steal from charities who rely on donations to carry out important work leaves a particularly unpleasant taste.

So often the punishment for offenders is so lenient that it rarely acts as a strong enough deterrent and with limited resources put into rehabilitation, we are likely to forever remain in an ever-repeating loop.

Mercedes-Benz takes the title at What Car? Used Car of the Year Awards MERCEDES-BENZ has won three awards at the 2019 What Car? Used Car of the Year awards, including the top accolade. The E-Class Estate (2017-present) was named ‘Best Used Car of the Year’, as well as ‘Best Used Estate Car of the Year’. The S-Class (2014-present) was named ‘Best Used Luxury Car of the Year’.

The E-Class Estate was also shortlisted as ‘Best Used Estate Car for less than £27,000’, while the S-Class won the ‘Best Used Luxury Car for less than £40,000’ category. On top of this, the Mercedes-Benz E 350 e (2017-2018) was shortlisted for the ‘Best Used Green Car for less than £40,000’ category, while the Mercedes-AMG GT (2015-present) was shortlisted for the ‘Best Used Sports Car for less than £120,000’.

The E-Class was praised for its innovative technology, interior comfort, efficient engines and low running costs. The S-Class was commended for its excellent ride quality, comfortable interior and reliability.

Penalties needed to separate teams LIZARD ARGYLE U18S football team were in action again on Sunday 7th October when they welcomed Culdrose Development to Beacon Terrace in the first round of the Premier League Cup. The match was evenly played with both teams always threatening to score throughout, but neither team was able to break the deadlock by full time.

This resulted in extra time being played where Culdrose scored midway through the second half

and the Lizard boys equalising 10 minutes from the end with a well taken goal from Sean Collins. The two teams still couldn’t be separated so the Lizard team went on to confidentially strike four penalties past the opposing keeper to the one penalty scored by Culdrose. Lizard Manger Johnny Bray and Coach Garry Tremayne were delighted with their team’s performance adding that they never gave up and kept their cool in what was a great game of football.
