Concert of ‘Cornishness’ for Helston n The Countrymen coming to the Epworth Hall

CORNISH FOLK-ROCK harmony band, The Countrymen, is coming to Helston for the first time to play a live set at the Epworth Hall.

With a relaxed and light-hearted style, the sixpiece band will take the audience on a journey through the history and culture of Cornwall while performing their own arrangements of traditional and contemporary songs, as well as original material.

Award-winning band to rock Godolphin

A CRITICALLY-ACCLAIMED Americana folk-rock band is set to perform in the intimate surroundings of The Godolphin Old Chapel Community Centre this weekend.

The Black Feathers comprises musicians Ray Hughes and Sian Chandler who first ‘became aware of the magic between them’ while collaborating on several musical projects before the band formed in 2012.

The award-winning duos debut album broke into the Top 10 in the iTunes Country chart and the Official UK Americana Chart.

My Next Holiday Is Going To...

Before I tell you where I am going to later this week on holiday, I thought I would share with you why I am going there.

I was watching Good Morning Britain with Piers Morgan about two months ago. Their entertainment presenter, Richard Arnold, was waffling on about Love Island, or some other inane programme. Richard is extremely amusing, though with no substance, no depth. When asked about his views on Brexit, he replied, in his usual camp manner (with a look to the side, raised eyebrows), that all he knew was that he found the Backstop useful. This is morning television remember. I really do not believe our children should be hearing this filth so early on in the morning!

Anyway, he also said that he

had just got back from Beirut and how wonderful the city was. Well, I am of the generation that was brought up with the Lebanon Civil War being reported regularly on TV, and with Beirut being bombed to smithereens. All I remember, and indeed know, about Beirut is Terry Waite being held hostage for a number of years, and then being released.

Now, because of Richard Arnold, I am off there! I have done a little bit of reading about Lebanon, to see if it is safe. And yes, it is, sort of!

Though it is recommended not to go to within 5miles of the Syrian border. This I can understand. I love an adventure, but getting mixed up, with my backpack on and Panama hat sitting cooly at an angle on my head, with a horrific civil war, is probably too

much of an “adventure”, even for me. A bloody war is not relaxing, I don’t believe.

As always, feel free to pop in and see me (only this week mind, as I am off on Friday for a couple of weeks) if you have any taxation or accountancy nightmares! If I survive Beirut, and you want to know where I will be going on my travels in 2020, you better watch Richard Arnold in the morning. I am obviously influenced by him, unduly some would say. And read this article next week to see how I am getting on (hopefully more than 5 miles from the Syrian border).

Builders merchant appeal recognised in national awards

RGB BUILDING SUPPLIES, which has a depot in Porthleven, has been shortlisted in the prestigious Builders’ Merchants Awards for its recent ‘Tools for Africa’ appeal.

The appeal invited the local community to donate pre-loved tools to be repaired and shipped to Africa. The tools will be used to

provide vocational training to young people so they can help lift themselves and their families out of poverty.

The company was named as a finalist in the Marketing Initiative of the Year category of the awards, which celebrate the best and the brightest in the merchant industry.

Lee Atkinson, Branch Manager at RGB Porthleven, said: “The Tools for Africa appeal was such a success, with over 33 ‘dumpy-bags’ of tools being donated from our customers and the communities local to our branches. We’re delighted that the initiative has been recognised by the Builders’ Merchants Awards and look forward to celebrating the achievements of those in the merchanting industry.”

Award winners will be announced during a celebratory lunch hosted by Dame Kelly Holmes at the London Hilton on Park Lane hotel on Friday, 22 November.

Helston slimmers continue to shed clothes for charity SLIMMERS IN HELSTON are celebrating losing weight by selling their old clothes in aid of charity.

Slimming World’s ‘Tuesday Group’, which meets at Helston’s Light and Life Centre at Water-Ma-Trout, is selling clothing items that no longer fit and raised a further £500 since their last donation of £770 in July for Children’s Hospice South West.

Slimming World Group leader, Suzie Hackland, said: “A group of us visited Little Harbour

and had the opportunity to see the amazing facilities and to understand the great work they are doing for the children and families in the South West. We had great pleasure in presenting a Cheque to Alice Merrett of Little Harbour for the £500. This makes a total donation of £1,270 this year.”

Two levels of range (124 miles and 186 miles WLTP), will allow customers to select a vehicle which suits their daily driving needs with the majority of professionals commuting less than 186 miles a day. Seat breaks into the motorcycle market with a fully electric escooter SEAT is strengthening its commitment to urban mobility and breaking into the motorcycle market with the presentation of the SEAT eScooter concept.

The company will sell its own fully electric, 125cc-equivalent motorcycle, with the official presentation taking place at the Barcelona Smart City Expo World Congress on 19th November.
