Better mobile signal for West Cornwall and The Isles of Scilly Derek Thomas, the prospective Conservative MP for West Cornwall and The Isles of Scilly, has joined forces with Giles Chichester MEP in support of the Countryside Alliance campaign for improved mobile signal coverage in rural areas. Derek Thomas said: “The problem of poor mobile phone coverage in West Cornwall and The Isles Of Scilly is regularly raised with me when I meet with farmers, local businessmen and service providers. Poor coverage leads to increased administration costs as well as the loss of business contracts worth millions to local businesses. It is also an ongoing frustration to everyone trying to make or receive mobile calls in our area. It is also a real lifeline for many of the less able members of our community. I believe that people paying the same mobile tariff should receive the same level of service and this is certainly not the case in West Cornwall.”

The Countryside alliance has joined forces with technology company RootMetrics to provide an app, which enables the user to test the strength of the mobile signal where they are and this information is fed back to RootMetrics who calibrate the data, which will then be used to lobby the mobile phone companies and the Government to improve the service. People can sign Derek’s petition at www.derekthomas.org/mobilereception and there they can get information on how to download the app to help them report the strength of the signal in their area. Cornwall’s park home residents support plans to set up new forum People living in park home sites across Cornwall are joining together to set up a new Forum to enable them to work together more closely and share information and best practice. The suggestion to set up a Park Homes Residents’ Forum was initially discussed at two events staged by Cornwall Council for park home residents at Heartlands and Bodmin last September when more than 150 people from sites across Cornwall met with Cornwall Councillors and officers. Since then Council officers have been working to further improve links for park home residents. Recent initiatives include a new ‘resident’s guide’ leaflet and the development of a new webpage on the Council’s website. Officers have also provided information on

changes in legislation and organised a pilot scheme to help improve insulation in a number of homes. Park home residents at the recent steering group meeting agreed to take forward the idea of setting up a Park Homes Residents’ Forum for Cornwall to enable residents to share information and best practice, network with other park home residents and keep up to date with the current park homes legislation. Following this meeting officers from the Council’s Localism Team will now be working with the residents to help set up the organisation. An annual general meeting will now be held in the Spring when park home residents will be invited to vote and formally establish the forum. Geoff Brown, the Council’s

Cabinet Member for Homes and Communities, said ’The Council is committed to working with park home residents to support them to establish the forum. This is an important step and will help residents to establish stronger links between residents on different parks and also with Cornwall Council and the other partner agencies which provide services or support.’ Any park home resident who is interested in attending the next steering group meeting in March or would like further information about the forum can contact Emma Ball – Community Regeneration Officer E-mail emma.ball@cornwall.gov.uk. Free 30 mins parking to be offered in all Cornwall Council run car parks Cornwall Council is continuing its series of parking offers with a new scheme offering free parking for half an hour in all Council run car parks. The offer, which begins on 1 March and runs until 20 April, has been developed in response to calls from some local businesses for a free first half hour of parking to allow people to make a flying visit to their local town centre. The Council will be monitoring the response to this offer to assess how much demand there is for free half hour parking and where that demand is greatest. “'It is very important that car parks should contribute to the competitive environment of our town centres, and that the Council should manage the car parks to support local businesses” said Bert Biscoe, the Council’s

Cabinet Member for Transport and Waste. “These trials are an effort to understand what measures, when and in which places, we can use in future to enhance trading, improve accessibility for people needing to come into town centres for services, and to sustain car parks income to contribute to the maintenance of the road network.” As it would be too costly to change the pay and display machines in all the Council run car parks for this trial, anyone wanting to take advantage of the offer will need to use the RingGo mobile phone payment service. Although this system is very easy to use, first time users will be required to provide some initial information and so they may find it easier to register online at www.ringgo.co.uk

While there will be no cost for the first half hour of parking, anyone who wants to have a text message sent to them to remind them of when the parking session is over or if they want to extend the parking session, will be charged for that message and any additional parking. Details of these charges will be available on the tariff boards in the car parks or via the RingGo phone line. Please check the details on tariff boards in individual car parks for more information. The results of both this trial and the other parking trials which are taking place across Cornwall will be analysed to assess the level of demand and to get feedback from members of the public and businesses. This information will then be used to plan future parking charges and future offers.

Money in the community pot Coastline Housing is encouraging community groups to apply for a share of a £10,000 funding pot. The funding pot provides grants for local projects and groups to help support thriving communities. Any group can apply for funding, so long as the activity or project it is putting on will benefit a proportion of Coastline customers within Cornish communities. Coastline owns 4,000 homes across Cornwall, covering major towns including Camborne, Redruth and Helston, as well as a number of outlying villages. To apply, a community group must have a formal constitution, terms of reference, rules or aims and objectives and be able to demonstrate how the group, proj-

ect or activity will provide a benefit to the community around them. Nicki Highton, Neighbourhood and Involvement Facilitator at Coastline, said: “In these times, it’s hard for many community groups to access funding, but the activities they put on can be so vital for thriving neighbourhoods and communities. The 51 Jazz Club of Cornwall offers Traditional and New Orleans style jazz every Sunday from 1pm to 3.30pm at the Smugglers Inn St Erth Praze (on the Helston side of Hayle). The pattern is usually a well-known British touring jazz band once a fortnight and good local band on the Sundays in-between. The touring bands invited to play at the club are mostly chosen from those bands regularly featured at all the usual Jazz festivals around the country. The “Smugglers” has hosted jazz for over forty years and is a well-known and popular venue for bands touring the West Country perhaps also playing at Bude and Plymouth Jazz Clubs on their way to or from the far South West. These bands will often have hailed from London, Manchester, and Birmingham sometimes even from Europe, particularly Denmark and Sweden. The timing at the Smugglers has been a success over the years allowing people the opportunity of a good Sunday roast lunch whilst at the same time enjoying the jazz atmosphere. Others come just for the music, the dancing and a drink or two. Whatever the reason for your visit you will be assured of a warm welcome at the Club. More Information? Hear My Voice campaign is launched to encourage young people to register to vote A campaign aimed at encouraging young people to register to vote has been launched in Cornwall. Hear My Voice, which is aimed primarily at 18 – 24 year olds, will see posters at prominent sites and on buses, a short film promoted through social media channels including Twitter and You Tube and a clip from the film shown at cinemas in Truro, St Austell and Newquay. Cornwall Council bid for and was successful in obtaining government funding to run a campaign targetting 18 – 24 year olds and to find ways of reaching out to groups who feel most distant from the political process, and encouraging them to get involved and register to vote. Identified nationally as the group least likely to register to vote with official figures showing that only 44% of 1824’s voted in the last general election in 2010, the message to them is: Register to vote to help

shape the future you want for yourself and others. Don't wait for someone else to make changes for the better - make sure your voice is heard so that you can influence those changes yourself. Be a part of the decisions that directly affect you. To support that message, a film has been produced which is featured on the Council website but will be pushed predominantly via social media channels like Twitter, Facebook and You Tube. Denise Holwill from Cornwall Council’s elections team said: “We have spoken to groups of young people who do seem to feel disengaged from the whole political process. In one session we handed out pieces of paper to just 40% of a group of young people and then asked an emotive question like should the death penalty be reintroduced in this country? Trio of medals for Culdrose sailors Three Fleet Air Arm Senior Rates from Culdrose were celebrating after being honoured with Long Service awards for their faithful Service. First Sea Lord, Admiral Sir George Zambellas KCB DSC ADC DL took time during his busy schedule visiting Royal Naval Air Station Culdrose to present medals and thank them for their service on the Sea King and Merlin helicopter Fleets at the Base. Receiving Long Service & Good Conduct (LS&GC) medals were Chief Petty Officer Air Engineering Technician James Earnshaw (35) and Petty Officer Air Engineering Technician Leon Cole (34) along with Petty Officer Aircrewman Simon Harrison (37). All three are currently serving together with 824 Naval Air Squadron, Merlin MK 2’s

Air Engineering Training School at HMS Sultan near Portsmouth and has joined 824 NAS as the Electrical Trade lead. POAET Leon Cole began his naval career in 1996 as a junior Air Engineering Mechanic serving on 706 and 810 NAS working with Sea King MK 6 before joining 771 Search and Rescue NAS on Sea King MK 5. Drafted to 820 NAS in 1999 he embarked onto HMS Illustrious which was involved in operations off Sierra Leone and providing humanitarian aid to Mozambique during the 2000 floods. Leon was promoted in 2001 to Leading Hand and made the transition to Merlin and 814 NAS deploying again to HMS Illustrious and tours to the Middle East. Promoted to Petty Officer he is now serving on 824 NAS recently converting to Merlin MK 2.

POACMN Simon Harrison started his naval service in 1998 before joining Culdrose for his Engineering Training with 810 and 771 SAR NAS. During his time, on 810 NAS he worked closely with the aircrewman, deploying on Operation Veritas onboard HMS Cornwall. Seeing an opportunity to transfer to flying, Simon moved across to the Aircrewmen’s Branch in 2003; starting on 824 NAS and flying Merlin MK 1. Front line time was cemented on 814 NAS before being selected for a Qualified Aircrewman Instructors (QAI) course back with 824 NAS. Returning once again to 814 NAS he has completed tours of duty in the Middle East and North America and is now back with 824 NAS, involved in the development of the Merlin MK 2.

West Cornwall Pool League The Atlantic Inn A gave defending champions Wendron CC A a massive shock last week in division 1 of the West Cornwall Winter Pool League. The Atlantic lead 4-1 with wins coming from John Collins, JP Collins, Justin Uren and Dean Williams and it could have been 5-0 but for Tony Woodhams missing a black however the Wendron side produced a fine comeback to win the match 5-4. Helston FC A took full advantage with an 8-1 victory over Rodney Inn A to take a 3 point lead at the top.

Last year’s tournament raised just over £4000 for Cancer Research UK and the youth of Wendron FC. In 14 years a remarkable £75,064 has been raised through your support and by giving youngsters the chance to participate in the largest 1 day soccer festival in the South West. This year’s event takes place on Sunday 20th July at Wendron’s Underlane ground. Entries are invited from age groups under 7 to 13 and once again we expect over 100 teams and 1000 youngsters to take part. Dependant on age, teams will play in two groups on a round robin basis and may play knock out games

with trophy’s for the winners and runners up. The under 7, 8 & 9 age groups will play in accordance with FA guidelines and play round robin games only. There will be a full programme of events for the whole family including licensed bar in the clubhouse, BBQ, pasties, cakes, ice cream, bouncy castle, some trade stalls, bottle stall, and many other attractions making for a fun filled family day outing. Full reveal of Vauxhall's radical Geneva star With over 300PS generated from its 2.0-litre turbo engine, the Astra VXR EXTREME will be the most powerful frontwheel drive Vauxhall ever when it’s unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show next month. Derived from last year’s Astra Cup race car that competed in the Nürburgring Endurance Championship, the EXTREME is the lighter, more powerful streetlegal race sibling to the current Astra VXR. Shorn of 100kg, thanks to liberal use of high-quality carbon components, the EXTREME’s natural environment will be the race track. If public reaction is as positive as expected, Vauxhall plans a low-volume production run for the EXTREME. With direct injection and variable camshaft phasing, the EXTREME’s 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine is the most powerful four-cylinder unit Vauxhall has ever produced. The all-aluminium engine is mated to six-speed manual gearbox transmitting power through a limited-slip dif-

ferential. The EXTREME is 100kg lighter than a standard Astra VXR thanks to its high-quality, carbon fibre components. This high-strength, ultra-light material is used for the aerodynamically-optimised rear wing, the diffuser, front spoiler, bonnet, suspension cross-bracing, engine cover, wheels, rear wheelhouse ventilation and roof. Noticeably lowering the EXTREME’s centre of gravity is the in-house manufactured carbon fibre roof which weighs just 2.6kg, compared with a steel roof’s 9.3kg. The wings are made of aluminium and weigh only 800g a piece instead of 2.2kg in steel. Weight reduction in key areas greatly improves agility, overall handling and the car’s power-to-weight ratio. Vauxhall has also given the EXTREME exceptional stopping power to match, with a Brembo six-piston brake system including 370mm diameter discs up front race car. Ultra high-performance, 245/35, 19-inch tyres, specially developed for the

EXTREME, also play a key role and give almost as much grip as those on the race car. In addition, the damper is adjustable, just like in a real touring car racer. Inside the EXTREME, the back seats have been taken out and a

safety roll bar put in their place. EXTREME also gets Recaro bucket seats, with six-point safety belts from Schroth and a carbonfibre-reinforced, suede-covered steering wheel with fine yellow decorative stitching.

The Astra VXR is now the bestselling VXR and the UK remains the largest market in Europe for Vauxhall and Opel’s highest powered models.
