Porthleven Food Festival cancelled

THE ORGANISERS of Porthleven Food Festival have announced with ‘heavy hearts’ that this year’s event will be cancelled due to the coronavirus outbreak.

Ticket holders will automatically be refunded for the event which was due to take place from April 17 to 19.

All traders, acts, artists and speakers will be rebooked for the 2021 event.

Alec Short, Chairman of Porthleven Food Festival, said: “Much of the demographic for our event in the daytimes is 60 plus and the World Health

Organisation has already advised people in this age bracket not to attend public gatherings. The committee has been monitoring the situation in the UK as it worsens and we all believe it is the right decision to cancel.

“With less than five weeks to go any additional restrictions on the movement of people, or a nationwide ban on events being enacted in the coming weeks, would be financially catastrophic for us.

Coupled with the current public health concerns, we feel that we must cancel the event

this year in order to guarantee its future survival.

“We’ve been experiencing increased uncertainty and concerns from our audience, sponsors, traders, suppliers and partners and feel that this is the responsible course of action in the current unprecedented climate.

“By cancelling now, we can secure the future of the festival. There are very real risks if we continue to people being unwilling or unable to attend the event, or of the UK government imposing a ban on large gatherings, as has happened in other European countries.

The implications of those actions would be catastrophic for the future of the event. We hope everyone will support our decision and come back and join us in 2021.”

The next Porthleven Food Festival will take place from April 23 to 25, 2021.

The Blasted Corona Virus Gives Me The Shakes!

There has been talk for a while of “Wearable Technology”. I didn’t really understand what it all meant, that is, until I bought myself an electronic wrist band that counts my steps.

I have had it now for nearly three months, and on Sunday I had a sudden realisation: it had taken control of my life!

It was in charge. My objective each week is to walk 10,000 steps per day, on average, or around ten kilometres per day. Sunday is the end of the week, according to the wretched wristband. I don’t have any say, the wristband tells me Sunday is the end of the week.

Well, on Sunday, I was some way short from achieving the 10,000 average steps.

So I spent all Sunday after-

noon, for around 3 hours, walking around Helston, watching the screen until the target was hit. This little black band had me by the lead, and was parading me around Helston. I had become addicted. I was an addict!

What really worries me, as with any addiction, is what I would do if I was forced into self isolation because of the Corona Virus. How would I cope going Cold Turkey?

Stuck at home, how would I achieve my 10,000 steps? I would get dizzy, and bored, walking around and around my living room. What choice would I have? The black band would be shouting WALK, but is it possible to walk 10kms in your living room, each day? I get the

shakes, and start sweating, just thinking about the withdrawal symptoms of not achieving the 10,000 objective.

Evening of songs and stories at Godolphin Club

A PERFORMANCE CHOIR will bring an evening of original songs and stories to The Godolphin Club in Helston this weekend.

Penzance-based Tuesday Night Fun Club features 30 singers and musicians from across west Cornwall. The ensemble will perform

complex and uplifting multi-part harmonies and lyrics and will be joined by Annamaria Murphy, a writer with Kneehigh Theatre and BBC Radio 4.

The performance takes place on Saturday from 7.30pm. Tickets cost £5 on the door.

COVERACK BEACH is set to twinkle with candlelight for its annual Night of Twinkling Lights community event.

Visitors are invited to take part by purchasing a candle bag and tealight for £3 from Coverack Information Point to add to the display held on Saturday, 4 April from 8.30pm.

The event is organised by the Coverack Space 2000 (CS2000) community group with all funds raised going towards future events and activities in Coverack. Organisers say all lights will be collected at the end of the evening and recycled.

Book launch and exhibition for art group A LOCAL ART group is launching a new book featuring work by its members at an event this weekend.

LizardArt is a co-operative of artists who mostly live and work on the Lizard Peninsula. Alongside the book launch there will be a private view of the first of five exhibitions scheduled to take place during 2020.

The event takes place in the Stableyard Gallery at Trelowarren Estate in Mawgan, with a private viewing on Sunday from 2pm to 4pm.
