Helston Chamber Choir to hold summer concert HELSTON CHAMBER CHOIR and Orchestra is set to present their new summer concert, Henry Purcell’s King Arthur, on June 22 at St Michael’s Church in Helston.

The semi-opera was first performed to great acclaim in 1691 with music by composer Henry Purcell, including the famous ‘Frost Scene’ and memorable aria ‘Fairest Isle’.

Advance tickets cost £8 and are available from Heathercraft in Coinagehall Street, or £10 on the door. Fulltime students go free.

Benidorm: It Is What It Is!

I am now towards the end of my holiday in Spain, and for the last few days I have been in Benidorm. I had to come and see for myself what it was all about, and it is everything you imagine: English breakfast (no tapas here), beer in the morning (though I was disciplined and did wait until the evening, hand on heart and all that), English bands playing English songs at full blast with the English clientele singing in unison, and watching England playing Switzerland at football and winning on penalties, which obviously generated a huge cheer. I almost forgot the beach, or two long beaches, both must be at least 2 or 3 kilometres long, and the sand is silky and the sea is warm.

Now, it is easy to be snobbish about Benidorm. There is little or no culture here, no museums, no sightseeing as such. There is no ancient history, no art galleries and no Spanish spoken. In fact, I have given up even trying to speak Spanish, there is no point. All you’ll get in reply for your linguistic efforts is a confused frown of someone from Leeds replying “Are you alright, luv?” while wearing a XXXXL t-shirt with “I Beat

Anorexia!” emblazoned across the front.

So, yes, it is easy to be snobbish about Benidorm, but you would be mistaken, and it would be patronising. Think of Benidorm not as a foreign holiday, but a replacement for the days in the fifties and sixties when the city, industrial workers used to go en masse to Blackpool, Great Yarmouth or Scarborough. It is simply a time to relax, have fun and sunbathe. It is a time to forget all the problems back home. Benidorm is an escape from reality! It is in fact a very cheap escape and only 2 hours from Newquay airport.

I am not normally a big one for sunbathing, I get restless, but I have been sunbathing during my time in Benidorm. More accurately I should say, sunburning, as I invariably get sunburnt, and the skin on my face is peeling as I write this article! I needn’t worry, as I am not out of place here. Us Brits are hopeless with sun-cream. We are all a blotchy red with skin flaking off us. What must the Spanish think of us? That most definitely is not a problem to worry about as there are next to no Span-

ish in the Spanish seaside resort of Benidorm!

I have met so many people here that tell me that for the last twenty or thirty years they have been coming to Benidorm, every year.

They never go anywhere else. Why bother? Benidorm has everything they want. It is comparable to a religious experience for them, a Mecca (just with the plastic sunglasses and warm beer). And from my few days here, I can see why. I will definitely come back. I love Benidorm. I am a Benidorm convert!

I arrive back in Helston this week, back to work, so feel free to pop in and see me if you have any questions or accounts need doing. And please do not stare at my sunburnt face. Is it OK to wear flip flops to work (as an accountant)? Why not! I will bring a little bit of Benidorm back home with me.

Heart charities benefit from success of music festival

THE BRITISH Heart Foundation and the cardiac unit the Royal Cornwall Hospital have received a fundraising boost with their share of £5,870 raised at this year’s Heart Beats Festival.

The popular music event was held at the Blue Anchor Inn at Helston on May 5 with music from some of the leading bands across the county.

Organiser Kay Harvey, who suffers a cardiac condition, said: “I would like to extend huge grateful thanks to everyone who helped in any way. Simon and Kim Stone and all the staff at the Blue Anchor, Simon Wilcock of Phoenix Signs for the printing and Tee Shirts. Builders merchant launches 30th Community Fund A BUILDER’S merchant is offering charities, colleges, and community groups that help young people learn new trades the chance to receive £1,000 to spend in store.

RGB Building Supplies, which has a branch at Porthleven, has launched its 30th ‘Well Built Community Fund’ and is celebrating the landmark giveaway by helping those supporting future tradespeople.

The fund aims to help organisations with projects such as a college to update its tools, or a community project to purchase materials to help young people learn a trade.

Lee Atkinson, Branch Manager at RGB Porthleven, said: “It’s been well-publicised that our industry needs more young people coming into it, so we want to offer assistance to organisations that provide training and support, and we look forward to hearing how a

donation could help.”

New Suzuki Katana set to headline MK Bike Show

WITH THE MK Bike Show returning to stadium MK on June 23, Suzuki has announced its attendance and, along with it, that the hotly-anticipated and newly-launched KATANA will be taking centre stage.

The original KATANA rocked the motorcycling world when it was launched in 1981, with futuristic, stand-out styling. The new-for-2019 KATANA draws inspiration from the legendary 80s machine, with aggressive, Samurai sword-inspired lines, but unlike its forebearer, it uses a thoroughly modern and powerful 150hp engine.

Volkswagen launches 48hour E-Golf test drives CUSTOMERS are now able to arrange a two-day e-Golf test drive, picking the car up from their local Retailer and dropping it back up to 48 hours later.

The move is the latest in a string of initiatives introduced by Volkswagen to encourage drivers to experience its range of electric vehicles – a range centred on the award-winning e-Golf and the forthcoming ID.3 which is due here next year.

The e-Golf starts at £30,340 RRP OTR1 in the UK, and has

a range of up to 144 miles (WLTP). Its synchronous electric motor produces up to 136 PS and 393 lb ft of torque, both available almost instantly. Naturally, as a zero-emission vehicle, the e-Golf is exempt from the Congestion and Ultra Low Emission Zone charges, while road tax is currently rated at £0 and running costs are considerably reduced versus those of petrolor diesel-engined equivalents.

To top off the savings for company car drivers in particular, the e-Golf will benefit from

a Benefit In Kind rate that is slashed to just 2% from April 2020.
