Appeal for new Flora Day big bass drum HELSTON Town Band is appealing to the public to help them buy a new drum used during the Flora Day celebrations. Individuals, groups or businesses are invited to sponsor the purchase of a big bass drum used in dances throughout the special day. During rehearsals earlier this year the drum’s skin was damaged and has now been deemed as irreparable due to its age. Fortunately, Porthleven Town Band came to the rescue and allowed the band to use their drum for the Children’s and Mid-Day Dance. A

replacement is expected to cost £300 and band members are hoping that someone will step in and help them buy a replacement. A spokesperson said: “The bass drum is such an iconic part of Flora Day and we are very hopeful that someone will be able to help by sponsoring a replacement. Instruments are really very expensive with the largest brass instruments costing up to £9,000 each.” Anyone is interested in sponsoring a new drum should contact Helston Band Secretary Graham Carter on 07973 797040.
