Top musician joins school orchestra

HELSTON Community College has hit the right note after securing one of the brightest stars of the jazz world to perform at its annual leavers’ concert.

Saxophonist Pete Long has played alongside world-renowned musicians Jools Holland, Dizzie Gillespie and The Stereophonics and will join Helston School Jazz Orchestra to celebrate the achievements of the 12 students who will be leaving.

The concert starts at 7.30pm on July 19 at Helston School’s North Site. Tickets cost £7.50 or £25 for a café-style table of four and are available from Christophers Estate Agents in Wendron Street. A licensed bar and pasties will be available.

Helston Advertiser Traffic questions gives MP a voice remain unanswered REGULAR visitors to our website may have noticed a change this week with the addition of a section for articles written by our local MP. Derek Thomas, MP for the St Ives constituency, contacted us to enquire whether the Helston Advertiser would be interested in publishing a monthly review of his work on behalf of constituents.

We were delighted to be able to offer this to our readers to provide a platform for our elected MP to connect with the local community.

Regardless of which candidate you may have voted for at the general election, I feel it is important we are kept informed about local issues which can help us work together to create a better future.

As ever, The Helston Advertiser remains politcally neutral and Mr Thomas’s section is not provided free-of-charge. We would always consider similar enquiries from other political parties.

One question commonly heard is “what has my MP done for me?” and with this in mind, this new section may help to answer the question and help you decide which candidate deserves your support at the next election.

TEMPORARY measures preventing vehicles turning right from Penhellaz Hill onto the (A394) Helston to Penzance road or from turning left onto St John’s Bridge from the Penzance direction continues to be a heavily debated topic in the town.

I have spoken to some residents of Cross Street who mostly appear to support the new traffic calming measures, yet have yet to hear a sufficient answer to what I feel is the main objection to the trial - what about the additional time spent navigating alternative routes, extra fuel costs, higher emissions and increased wear and tear on vehicles?

For example, to drive from Alfords Flooring on the Penzance Road to the Redruth Road via Cross Street involves navigating two junctions (Cross Street onto Church Street and Church Hill onto Water

Ma Trout). Whereas the alternative route through The Furry sees motorists having to contend with four sets of traffic lights and two single and two double roundabouts.

I cannot imagine anyone would willingly choose to take such an arduous route when a simpler one is available.

I feel the problem was born decades ago when developers were permitted to build houses and the Water ma Trout estate on the north side of the town without thought given to traffic access.

By comparison, in more recent times the excellent Helston bypass near the Premier Inn was paid for by the developer.

I regularly hear complaints that exiting Lidl supermarket car park can take drivers an excessive amount of time. I can’t help but wonder how much of a ‘donation’ needs to be made to the town council before the supermarket is granted a roundabout.

Godolphin Club suffer first loss in summer pool league

Bayliss wins National Trust Cup at Mullion

THE Godolphin Club C lost their unbeaten record in Division One of the West Cornwall Summer Pool League last week.

They were the final side to be protecting an unblemished record but it fell as they lost 5-4 to Helston RFC. Singles winners for the rugby club were George Pattison, Phil Johns, Charlie Conway and Scott Harris.

Godolphin Club A are currently fighting second spot with Helston FC A and defeated the football club by 5-4 to now lead them by a point.

The two other games in the division also finished 5-4 as Red Lion A defeated Lion & Lamb A and the Rodney Inn A team defeated Lion & Lamb Misfits.

The Crown Inn are the new Division Two leaders after a 6-3 win

over Rodney Inn B while Lizard FC lost their second game in a row 5-4 to Red Lion B, Ryan Eddy, John Priest, Rich Nicholls and Megan Walsh all winning their singles for the Red Lion.

The Beehive have moved up to third after a 6-3 win over the Queens Arms and Helston FC Grinders edged out the Helston Cricket Club 5-4.

Brownfield wins Anniversary Trophy

MULLION Ladies Golf hosted The National Trust Cup on Sunday with players enjoying pleasant playing conditions.

Gill Bayliss (pictured receiving the cup from ladies captain Margaret Thomas) scored 39 points to beat Janette Coates on 34 points into second place with Elaine Barbour one point back in third.

The last week has also seen them play the Medal Winners Play off and Elaine Barbour moved up to first to collect a fine win, scoring 76 net back nine from second placed Margaret Thomas and Janette Coates in third.

THE Men’s Anniversary Trophy was won on the weekend at Praa Sands Golf Club by Mike Brownfield with a superb 40 points.

Steve Strick finished second with 39 points on the last nine holes from Gary Thomas in third and Ray Crebo in fourth.

Alison Jacka won the Ladies’ Leddra Cup on Saturday with a fine 38 points, Anna Harry was second with 33 and Lily Hiscott third with

31 points on the last nine holes from Di Lyons in fourth.

Both these events were fundraisers in aid of the Cornwall Air Ambulance Trust and a fantastic sum of £276 was raised over the weekend.

Ann Seabrook won the Ladies 9 hole stableford on Wednesday with 18 points, Di Lyons second with 17 and Anne Griffiths third with

16 points.

John Clapson Memorial Trophy with a superb

46 points. Joe Hill was second with 39, Ken

Lawrence third with 37 and Allan Lawrence fourth with 35 points on the last nine holes from Mike Brownfield.
