Porthleven sailor reaches the top rung An naval Air Engineer from Porthleven has been awarded the top Warrant Officer’s job in the Royal Navy at a historical ceremony onboard Admiral Horatio Nelson’s Flagship HMS Victory in Portsmouth. Warrant Officer First Class Steve Cass RN, who recently held the position of Base Warrant Officer at Royal Naval Air Station Culdrose, was handed the reins to the most prestigious job for a Non Commissioned rating in the Naval Service by the Second Sea Lord Vice Admiral David Steel CBE. The Warrant Officer of the Naval Service (WONS) is the senior and most influential post a Royal Naval Warrant Officer can hold. With the position comes a wide ranging portfolio and includes involvement in the most senior forums including the Navy Board, the Naval Command Operating Board and the Personnel Executive Group. Terry Casey RN MBE, who had been in post for just over 3 and half years said, “A great deal of change during my time in charge, from the early days of the Defence Review, redundancies, pay freezes and huge uncertainty, to today, where the Royal Navy needs to grow to meet its future commitments. It’s a hugely exciting time for everyone and requires all, particularly the Warrant Officers and Senior NCO’s to inspire the next generation to go on to operate the most complex warships, submarines and aircraft that defence supplies.
