Grab a slice of healthy living in Helston A fitness foodie is preparing to serve up a range healthy treats with the launch of a new business in Helston.

Natasha Mossayebi-Maclean has combined her appetite for health and fitness with a love of great tasting foods to create a new eating experience at The Coffee Hut in Coinagehall Street.

Based alongside Andy Barbers, the new eatery offers vegan friendly, gluten free snacks with no added sugar along with dairy free, diabetic and vegan options.

Natasha, 32, prides herself in using all natural ingredients free from artificial sweeteners, preservatives and chemicals and hopes the new business proves a hit.

She said: “In the past, my addiction to sugar was affecting my health so I decided to cut it out of my diet completely, yet found it hard to find healthier sugar free treats which weren’t packed full of chemicals or nasty

Counter Intuitive Rubbish!

At a meeting last week down at the Boating Lake (as it is known by us oldies), the guy who manages Coronation Park (as it is known by the fashionable, trendy types) said something interesting. He said that the less rubbish bins they have at the Boating Lake, the less littering there is.

This is, of course, counter intuitive (rubbish). Surely it would be better to have more rubbish bins to reduce littering?

But, if you think about it, it does actually make sense. Why? Well, if there are rubbish bins, then the public will put their rubbish into the bins (most of the time).

But when the bins are overflowing, they will tentatively put the rubbish on top, balancing the fish & chips’ wrappings, daintily on the empty Coca Cola cans, in an act so impressive it should be in the circus. I have done it before, I am sorry to say. But, then a gust of wind blows it off, and the sea gulls charge in, to devour the cold chips, and distribute the rubbish across the Park. If there is no bin, then the public simply, take it home. So, less bins, less of a rubbish problem! Who would have believed it?

That got me thinking about other counter intuitive things. I received a marketing email over the weekend. It was promoting some business guru. What did this guru have to say? Well, he explained

why some coffee shops have unlimited re-fills of coffee. And they make more money! How can this be? You give away free coffee and make more of a profit. This cannot be true. Well, it is. Why? It means the coffee shop needs less staff, as they are not faffing around behind the counter making the coffee. Just hand empty cups to the customer, and they go off and make it themselves. And they are more likely to stay longer, and end up ordering food and the like. Clever!

Another example is mathematical.

What is the probability of two people in a room of 30 random people having the same birthday? Well, it is 70%! Yes! I have done the calculation and it is correct.

Amazing isn’t it, and totally counter intuitive. If I were a teacher, I would play this game with every new class. The students would think I was amazing. It is known as the Birthday Paradox. Check it out yourself. You want me to explain it? No! Firstly, I am not a Maths teacher and it is not my job to teach you maths. Secondly, I am too busy doing self assessments (with the deadline on Thursday) and just don’t have time.

One last one example of Counter Intuitive things! When we buy something in a shop, we love the idea of returning it if we decide we do not like it. But this makes us

more anxious, more likely not to like the product. No? Yes! Why? If we didn’t have the right of return, merely because we did not like it, then we would accept it as a done deal, and move on with live. If we do have the option, then we prevaricate, we dither, and mull over whether we like it or not. By not having the choice, we accept it.

Less decision making makes us less anxious and, therefore, more happy.

As always, feel free to pop in and see me. If you have not done your self assessment yet, then still pop in! You will have a £100 penalty, but don’t risk it getting out of control. I have seen it time and time again. I have a confession. I looked at the Birthday Paradox maths equation, and got bored, or more accurately, confused.

So please don’t pop into my office asking me to explain it! I had to confess. I had no choice. Not because I am decent human, but because otherwise I would have had queues of people demanding that I explain it. The risk of public disorder outside my office was just too high. The Helston Police are not equipped for rioting in We n d r o n Street!

Women aiming to make Sense out of gruelling marathon A HELSTON woman is busy training for April’s London Marathon, which she is running in memory of her father who passed away last year.

Gemma Priest and running partner Melissa Nicholas are raising money for Sense, a charity who believe that no matter how complex their disabilities, no one should be isolated or unable to fulfil their potential.

Experts offer personalised support through centres, holidays and short breaks, or in people’s own homes.

Gemma said: “I have run for years, but with the sudden passing of my dad, it became my saviour. Dad meant the world to me and l lost a massive part of my life.

“But I could not crumble and had to stay strong for my family and running helped me through my darkest times and gave me a chance to clear my head and try to make sense of everything.”

Helston to cut down on single-use plastic waste HELSTON TOWN COUNCIL has joined the 21st century by agreeing to support the Plastic Free Communities campaign to limit the use of single-use plastic.

They are encouraging plastic-free initiatives within Helston and are inviting businesses and organisations to get involved.

Although not all plastic is unnecessary, the big problem is single use plastics and the quantities in which they are used.

For marine wildlife it can be deadly as they become entangled or even mistake it for food.

According to Surfers Against Sewage, one in three fish caught for human consumption contains plastic.

Seawater plastic absorbs chemicals which have been linked to endocrine disruption and even some cancers.

The 5p charge for using plastic carrier

bags in large retailers has drastically reduced the number being used by consumers but I question why more is not being done to combat the amount used in packaging.

Food packaging makes up around two-thirds of the average person’s plastic footprint, with supermarkets creating an estimated 59 billion pieces of packaging totalling over 800,000 tonnes per year.

A recent analysis by consumer group Which? suggested 29% of supermarket plastic is not easily recyclable.

Further ‘best buy’ category wins for Suzuki at the What Car? Awards FOLLOWING its success last year, the Suzuki Celerio has again been awarded a ‘Best Buy’ accolade at the 2019 What Car? Awards held in London on 22nd January. At £8,999, the SZ2 model was comprehensively judged by the editorial team and announced as the best overall model in its City Car price bracket for less than £9,000. The Ignis SZ5 Hybrid 2WD was also awarded as the Best Small SUV for less than £15,000 having previously won the Magazines ‘True Mpg’ award in 2018.

Readers of What Car? regularly ask the team to assist with advice on their next new car and in the case of needing something small, cheap to buy and run and also easy to drive, Celerio and Ignis are very high on the list.

Commenting at the awards, Steve Huntingford, Editor of What Car? said “Suzuki has a long history of producing small cars and SUVs, and this experience shows in the quality of the models in its current range. The Celerio is a car that makes you ask a simple question: ‘Why

pay more?’ It’s well equipped, spacious and very frugal. For the money, there really is nothing which can touch it, while the Ignis offers SUV style for small hatchback money” Celerio SZ2 is now fitted with Suzuki’s higher technology Dualjet 1.0-litre petrol engine as standard offering greater flexibility and the price remains at £8,999. The higher specification SZ3 Dualjet is available for £10,499.

Worth noting is that What Car? achieved just 1mpg less than this figure in their True Mpg testing and in the magazine’s recently published fuel efficiency results, Suzuki has three models in the top 10 which are Ignis (first place) Celerio (second place) and Baleno (sixth place).

SZ2 Dualjet is available for just £119 per month on a 49 month PCP (Personal Contract Purchase) agreement for an initial deposit of £1,727. A final optional payment of £2,984 would be required to keep the car at the end of the term.

No change at the top of Pool League as two leaders win THE TWO leading teams in Division 1 of the West Cornwall Winter Pool League both won 6-3 last week, Helston FC A defeated Godolphin Club C and Wendron CC A won against Helston FC D while White Hart B recovered from a 3-2 deficit to win 5-4 against Godolphin Club B. There were also 6-3 victories for Godolphin Club A against Godolphin Club F and Helston FC C against Helston RFC A. Lizard FC D still have a nice lead in Division 2 after defeating fellow promotion hopefuls Harbour Inn 6-3 allowing the Rodney Inn A team to leapfrog them into second spot after a 7-2 win over the Godolphin Club Dunces.

Red Lion A team beat Helston RFC D 6-3 while there were 5-4 victories for White Hart A over

the Lion & Lamb and Helston RFC Swans over the Three Tuns A team.

The Wheel Inn won 6-3 against Helston RFC C to stay top of Division 3 but Breage SC B suffered a 5-4 defeat against Potters Bar in their battle for second spot. Lizard FC C won 6-3 win over Godolphin Club Pirates while Black Swan A and the Paris Hotel B team both won 5-4.

Queens Arms B stretched their lead at the top of Division 4 with a 6-3 win over the Poke & Hope as Wendron CC B suffered a 5-4 loss against Red Lion B but Lizard FC Ladies moved up to third spot after a 6-3 win against Black Swan B. Three Tuns B won 5-4 against Breage SC A and Rodney Inn B won against Out of the Blue by the same score.
