VW Jamboree to SPECIALS pull in the crowds AUGUST SUMMER

VOLKSWAGEN OWNERS and enthusiasts from all over the country will come together this bank holiday weekend to share their love of the Volkswagen brand.

This year marks 33 years of the Cornwall VW Jamboree, an event organised by the Cornwall Volkswagen Owners Club.

In addition to displays of weird, wonderful and rare Volkswagen models, organisers say there will be lots to see and do during the weekend for people of all ages.

Children’s entertainers,

DJs, stalls and live music will be on offer, along with a Show ’n’ Shine event on Sunday. A roadshow disco will entertain the crowds and entice visitors to the dance floor.

A fancy-dress night will take place on Saturday with this year’s theme of ‘Day of the Dead’.

Gallery opens doors to botanical art exhibition THE CUSTOMS HOUSE GALLERY in Porthleven will host an exhibition by local botanical artist Rebecca Jewell from Friday, with the opportunity to see the talented painter in action.

Rebecca’s sources of inspiration are many and varied. She said: “I have a real passion for Botanical art having always loved gardening it’s the perfect opportunity to grow the flow-

ers I love. I always work from photographs so taking the photographs has become a very important part of the process seeing the vision of the work you want to create through the lens.”

The Cycling Gardener Stops a Murder!

Earlier this year, as you may be aware, I bought my first house.

And with the house came a back garden.

I have fallen in love with my garden. It was overrun with weeds and long grass with a rotting shed in the corner. I cleared it all, and went on a planting spree. The only plants that were originally there was a huge, colourful fuchsia bush and a Cordyline tree. Everything else was binned at the Recycling Centre.

Within a few weeks I noticed the fuchsia bush was dying.

And then a family friend, who was visiting, came to have a look at my garden: it was The Cycling Gardener. He gets his name as he cycles to jobs with spades and a garden fork tied to the frame of his bike. He is very eco-friendly. When he saw my fuchsia bush, he was shocked.

He examined it, and then noticed wood chippings around the base of the plant. “Why did you put these chippings down?” Well, it started with a horrible error. I had bought bags of compost. When I got home and opened up the bags I saw I had purchased, accidentally, one bag of

the dreaded wood. I couldn’t return it as I had opened the bag. So, instead of wasting the murderous wood chippings, I decided to lay them around the fuchsia. It was the worst decision I have ever made.

Why? Well, The Cycling Gardener explained: the wood decays, and part of the decaying process the wood absorbs nitrogen. Nitrogen is required for the healthy growth of all plants. The rotting wood was depriving the bush of vital nutrition.

The wood was killing the beautiful red bush. Or more accurately, I was!

I was devastated. I was a Fuchsia Killer. I was attempting to kill a harmless, peaceful plant. I jumped in to action and removed the evil wood chippings, and within days the plant recovered. It was a lucky escape, both for the Fuchsia and for me (from a Category A Prison).

As The Cycling Gardener was inspecting my garden for other calamities, my Mum was giving me her usual words of wisdom that the elderly are privy to. “Be careful of the gardening fork!” She warned me: “Hundreds die each year in the UK by standing on the spikes of the

garden fork when it is lying on the floor. Firstly the hapless gardener pierces their foot causing blood to gush, and then the handle comes flying up and hits them in the head, knocking them out; unconscious, they bleed to death!” Who knew of the dangers of a Cornish garden? I had been warned!

Remember, I am off on holiday in a couple of weeks, but will always be available by email when on holiday. Though I do not expect many people wanting my services given I am a Fuchsia Murderer (nearly)! PS: I Googled “Garden Fork Deaths” and found nothing! That is bizarre, or is there a conspiracy by the Garden Fork Manufacturers to keep us in the dark from this National menace?

Cornwall’s tin industry features in film VISITORS TO The Museum of Cornish Life in Helston will be treated to the screening of a feature film based around Cornwall’s tin industry.

Charity call for calendar photos

n One of the Little Troopers 2019 Calendar winners

A NATIONAL CHARITY is calling for military families to get their cameras out and get snapping for its annual ‘Military Moments’ calendar competition.

Military children’s charity, Little Troopers, is searching for heart-warming photos that capture the special bond between children and their serving parents.

Louise Fetigan, founder of Little Troopers, said: “We know there is a big military community in Helston with RNAS Culdrose on the doorstep so we would love to see local military families represented in next year’s calendar.

“We want to see photos that encapsulate military life and celebrate the unique relationship that Armed Forces parents share with their children. If it’s a special military moment that makes you smile or brings a tear to your eye then Little Troopers want to hear from you.”

Cowboys and Indians at Fantasy Festival

THE LIZARD PENINSULA is set to welcome the return of a fun and quirky three-day music festival next weekend.

Back for its sixth year, The Fantasy Festival will feature a wealth of Cornish bands, singers, workshops, food, drink, stalls and cocktail bar. Confirmed acts include The Gumbo Flyers, Zetan Spore, The Velvets, The Boundless Brothers, Weazeldust, The Mighty Offbeats and more.

This year’s theme is Cowboys and Indians with prizes for the best dressed visitors along with competitions and tournaments throughout the weekend. The event culminates with a ‘secret ending’ on Sunday to determine the head Cowboy and Indian.

The festival takes place from Friday, 30 August to Sunday, 1 September at Namparra Campsite in Kuggar. Visit fantasyfestivalcornwall.com for details.

Entrants at the event on Thursday, 29 August can register from 10am and build, mould and sculpt their

The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV once again topped the sales charts in July with 436 units registered, bringing calendar year to date sales to 4,083 unit, a reduction of just 2% over the same period in 2018 despite the PHEV market in the UK being 50% down year on year.
