Royal Navy duo sign for the Cornish Pirates IT has been announced that two Royal Navy-associated players have signed for the Cornish Pirates.

The Cornish Pirates squads were boosted with the announcement of seven names in total being dual-registered with Exeter Chiefs.

The Royal Navy duo, Cornish-born Musician Edd Pascoe (24) and Fijian born Logistician Timoci Kava (27), are looking forward to a full and interesting season with the Pirates and welcome the challenge of Championship Rugby.

Open day fun at Lizard animal sanctuary CORNWALL’S most southerly animal charity is throwing open its gates for a special day of fun later this month.

Bolenowe Animal Sanctuary is home to around 80 horses, ponies, donkeys, goats and other animals who have found a safe, caring home on its 30-acre farm just outside the village of Ruan Minor after being abandoned, unwanted, rescued or needing full-time care for the rest of their lives.

The open day will include a horse-training demonstration by Michelle Cure, a Monty Roberts natural horsemanship instructor, a fun dog show, songs by the renowned Cadgwith Singers, stalls, a bouncy castle, face painting, and

the chance to take a stroll around the paddocks to meet the animals.

Bolenowe’s chairman Val Blake said: “Among the horses and ponies that people can meet here are the Bodmin Twelve, two groups of starving and ill ponies rescued from Bodmin Moor and now enjoying a new, happy life here with the other horses and ponies, who include tiny Shetland ponies.”

The open day will run from 11am to 4pm on Sunday August 21, with entry by donations. Dogs on leads will be welcome. The sanctuary is well signposted from the A3083 as it approaches Ruan Minor.

Help make Helston a ‘model’ town

THE ARTS organisation CAST, in association with Helston Museum, is inviting the people of Helston to become ‘cardboard builders, architects, dreamers and visionaries’.

They will be holding a free workshop this week with people invited to make a vast cardboard model of Helston that will be developed over the week in the old school hall in the CAST building at 3 Penrose Road.

The group has commissioned

artist Lucy Grant to develop the Helston Model Town project with the museum providing a wealth of historical reference for the project.

Assistance will be provided for participants to make an individual building, vehicle or landscape component that they can then make their own.

Shops will be offered a model kit to recreate their own shop, which they can bring along at any point over the week.

The project, which takes place daily from 10am – 4pm at CAST, 3 Penrose Road, Helston, will end on the afternoon of Friday August 19 with an opportunity for visitors to see the finished model, celebrate and take photographs.

Local band to launch new EP at charity garden party

‘Loose Change’ will be renamed ‘The Tiger Tales’ and describe themselves as ‘A higgeldy piggeldy fivesome of ragamuffins based on the Lizard peninsula playing an eclectic mix of original music’ and are changing their name in celebration of their new EP ‘Changing’ which will be launched at the party where the band will be headlining.

Running towards life changing operation

Chloe Henderson suffers from cerebral palsy with the condition preventing her from standing or walking unaided and needing the use of a K-frame. Despite the obstacles she faces everyday, Chloe perseveres in leading a normal life and she became the first disabled child in the country to take and pass her pre-primary ballet award, using her walking frame.

The six friends, Adam Nicholls, Daniel Bateman, Daniel Lugg, James Preston, Ryan Forrester and Matthew Cox are aiming to raise £10,000 towards the extraordinary costs needed to fund a two year rehabilitation programme for Chloe. Although a large sum, sadly this is only a fifth of the total needed.

Helston council says no to Man Engine visit

HELSTON residents have expressed disappointment at news that the town’s council rejected the offer of a visit by The Man Engine.

The team behind the ten-metre tall mechanical puppet of a tin miner contacted the council in March to ask whether Helston would be interested in hosting a visit. The proposed cost to the town was estimated to be in the region of £1000 to £5000.

The town Amenities Committee unanimously voted to reject the idea which was then sent to the full council for the final decision.

Chairman of the Amenities Committee, Jonathan Gaby-Radford, is reported to have said that there were two main reasons that decision was made. The first was that the only day offered to Helston was a Wednesday which is traditionally the quietest day in the town.

However I feel that is the perfect day to arrange

an event, an opportunity to draw thousands of visitors to the town on a quiet Wednesday is much more appealing than on busier days of the week to boost trade even further.

The second reason is that the council was only provided limited information and were told The Man Engine was a large puppet.

Hindsight is wonderful thing and I can see how the mechanical giant was not expected to attract crowds of more than 150,000 people so far. It could be argued that no one could have predicted that level of turnout with any certainty.

However, other towns did have the foresight to research the proposal more thoroughly at the time. Had the council asked the right questions, they would have gained more information and been able to make an informed decision.

On the surface it appears the council made a

hasty decision and did not deem it necessary to research the proposal in any depth. In turn, we have missed out on an event that would have provided a much needed boost to the town and not only to our residents, but to our businesses, and the chance to promote ourselves to a wide audience through the resulting media coverage.

On my personal Facebook page, one woman asked why the council turned the event down and received a response of more than 70 comments. Nearly all of them were aghast at the news Helston missed out.

One clear lesson to be learned is that all proposals should be fully investigated before being accepted or declined. Furthermore, council votes should only take place when all the relevant people have the maximum amount of information, rather than the minimum.

Youth theatre group celebrate 10th birthday TO CELEBRATE their first 10 years, Helston’s youth theatre group ACT1 are hosting a one-off Gala night next weekend.

The show will feature some original members and the current crew and will consist of songs from many of the group’s previous productions such as Cats, Les Miserables, Oliver, and Seussical.

The performance will take place at The Epworth Hall on Saturday August 27 from 7.30pm to 10pm. Tickets are available from Heathercraft on Coinagehall Street, Helston.

Circus Berzercus presents Komedy of Errors AN AWARD-winning family show is all set to entertain at Penrose in Helston this weekend.

IN ONE of his last official engagements as Commanding Officer of Royal Naval Air Station Culdrose, Captain Ade Orchard OBE presented the Air Station’s Medical Centre Manager with an Efficiency Award.

Lisa Smith, the Business Manager of RNAS Culdrose’s Defence Primary Healthcare Centre picked up a prestigious Commanding Officer’s Efficiency Award for her work at the Base over the past two years.

Her devotion to working in the Medical Centre has contributed to the worldwide capability of the squadrons and personnel deployed on operations and duties with the Fleet. She has also overseen the successful completion of Culdrose’s Medical Centre two million pound refurbishment and has been crucial in covering gapped positions in senior management.

Surgeon Commander Marcus Philpott said: “Lisa’s resilience and tenacity have ensured the centre’s support to our deployed personnel on Operation Gritrock, during the Ebola outbreak in Sierra Leone. Her high level of devotion in supporting civilians and military staff in the medical centre as well as the patients is outstanding.”

The course was set around the airfield and across its runways, which were silent for the day and became the perfect setting as a ‘Triathlon Track’.

Starting with a 300-metre swim in Culdrose’s swimming pool the competitors took full advantage of a warm afternoon before heading onto the seven-mile cycle route. The competitors finally swapped cycle power for leg power as they set off on a final three miles loop of runway 07 – 25.

Lieutenant Richard Thorpe, a seasoned Royal Navy tri-athlete said: “It’s mainly aimed at novices and we are hoping that a number of those trying it out for the first time will get the bug and look to continue.”

TV’s Guy Martin breaks land speed record for Triumph

TV personality and motorcycle legend Guy Martin has become the fastest ever Triumph rider in the world by achieving 274.2 mph on the Bonneville Salt Flats in the United States.

His unusual bike, the Triumph Infor Rocket Streamliner, achieved the record speed at the world famous Bonneville Salt Flats on 8 August, this year.

Family cars were the UK’s fastest sellers last month as people prepared to head off on their holidays.

Citroen’s people carrier, the C4 Picasso (pictured right), was the UK’s fastest selling car taking just 18 days from forecourt to buyer. Its airy cabin and large boot space make it ideal for a family’s annual summer break.

Hot on its heels was SEAT’s now discontinued Altea XL, another people carrier and one capable of seating up to seven people.

That makes it an ideal set of wheels for larger families or those who need the extra storage space. It’s not just people carriers that buyers were snapping up.

The Nissan Qashqai+2 is the seven-seater version of the Sunderland-based company’s popular crossover. It’s no longer sold as a new model and the third row of seats are more for occasional use that fold flat into the floor when not required. The petrol auto-

The most profitable car in the UK’s top ten, however, was a small city car – the only one to feature in the top ten. The 2014 Toyota AYGO was one of the last of the previous generation models and proved to be a profitable sale for retailers achieving 100.56% of its average price position.

Son wins father’s memorial Helston FC extend lead trophy at Mullion Golf Club at head of Pool League

HISTORY was made at Mullion Golf Club with Patrick Gilbert, son of ‘Ginger’ Gilbert, past President and Captain, winning his father’s memorial trophy for the first time.

It was a special moment when Patrick along with his team members Ray Griffiths and Al Woodward received the trophy presented by Patricks sisters Tilly and Alison. There was fine scoring by Ray with three eagles on the par three holes, quite an achievement.

Williams finished runners up and in third was Mark Twynham, Mike Pamphilon and Rob Casley.

Ronnie Barr won Division One and the Monthly Medal at Praa Sands Golf Club on the weekend.

Runner up was Scott Willett with Giles Lawrence third and Ray Crebo fourth. Jim Duffield won Division Two from Neil Warden and Dave Rollason.

Anne Griffiths won the Ladies’ Monthly Medal on Saturday from Lily Hiscott in second and Jeanne Barker third and Di Lyons fourth.

Richard Lyons won the Ogres Weekly Stableford with 40 points and Gary Peters finished two points adrift.

The Seletar Goblets were won by Carole and Rod Jones with 37 points on the last nine holes from Phyllis Williams and Mike Hichens. Maureen Cuthbertson and Andy Holmes were third with 34 points on the last nine holes from Linda Dunford and Phil Hales.

On Wednesday Barbara Wilkins won the Ladies’ Nine Hole Stableford with Di Lyons second and Jennifer Chambers n Patrick Gilbert, Ray Griffiths and Al Woodward who won third on countback from Anna Harry Patrick’s father’s memorial trophy at Mullion Golf Club and Jackie Quick.

HELSTON FC A stretched their lead at the top of the West Cornwall Summer Pool League after a 6-3 win over the Bell Inn last week.

Godolphin Club C edged out their own B team 5-4 after winning the last two doubles matches and wins from Wayne Rogers, Ryan Yockney and Paul Tresidder helped Godolphin Club A to a 5-4 win over Rodney Inn A. Bottom side Constantine SC gained a much needed 6-3 win over Helston RFC C. Godolphin Club E still have a healthy

lead in division 2 after a 6-3 win over the Potters Bar last week while in the fight for second James Pawlyn, T. Robbens, Will Pawlyn and Andy Jones all won for the Boathouse in their 5-4 win over the Lion & Lamb A team.

Lion & Lamb B had better fortunes winning 5-4 against the Crown Inn. The Summer League doubles knockout were reduced to two pairs last Sunday and Dave Gator and Simon Makin (Godolphin Club E) will play Scott Harris and Stuart Lugg (Helston RFC C) in the final.

HELSTON have started their second season in the South West Peninsula Premier League with mixed results.

The team opened with a 2-1 defeat against Callington but hit back to beat Camelford 3-1 in an exciting midweek fixture and got a draw travelling to

Witheridge last Saturday.

Both Porthleven and Wendron have begun their seasons in the South West Peninsula League Division One West with wins.

Porthleven beat Holsworthy 3-0 while Wendon edged out Illogan 3-2.
