Overwhelming support for Mullion Fire Station Open Day Mullion Fire Station were overwhelmed with the support and success of their Open Evening on Thursday 7th August. Children’s Hospice South West needs your winter woollies! It may be the middle of summer, but Children’s Hospice South West desperately needs donations of winter clothing for its shops. Jumpers, cardigans, winter coats, gloves and scarves - whatever you have will be gratefully received. Children’s Hospice South West (CHSW) has three hospices in Devon, Cornwall and North Somerset with Little Harbour in Porthpean being the newest addition to the charity. CHSW relies almost exclusively on voluntary donations. Our shops are an important part of our fundraising and we are always in need of quality donations of clothing, toys, small furniture, electrical items, toys, books and bric a brac. Every bag of stock that is donated to us does make a real difference. Just £30 worth of goods could buy medical consumables for one day. Many of our children require specialist equipment during their stay. This equipment is vital to ensure that the children are as comfortable as possible and can spend time enjoying the surroundings of the hospice environment with their family. Safely extracting a live casualty on a Spinal Board after removing the roof of the vehicle. Also giving a spectacular show on what not to do in the event of a chip pan fire. We also had the Fire and Emergency Support Service vehicle (FESS) for everyone to look around which is run by volunteers from the Red Cross. Money was raised on various stalls, Cake, Treasure Map, Hot Dogs and Burgers, The Fire Fighters Charity and a Raffle. an outstanding amount was raised through out the evening. The Grand Total reaching ÂŁ842.75, which will be going to The Firefighterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Charity, is a huge success felt by everybody. Mullion Fire Station would like to thank everyone that turned up on the evening, especially the continued support by all the local people who donated money, cakes and prizes for the raffle.

Cornwall Council chosen to take part in One Public MOTS WITHOUT APPOINTMENT Estate programme FREE RE-TEST WITHIN 14 DAYS Cornwall Council has welcomed the news that it has been chosen to take part in the latest phase of a programme which encourages local authorities and the Government to work together to release land and buildings for housing and projects to create new jobs. The unitary authority is one of 20 councils which have been selected to take part in the second phase of the One Public Estate Programme. The programme, which is headed by the Cabinet Office and the Local Government Association, is designed to boost economic growth and regeneration by releasing surplus Government land and property through greater collaboration between local and central Government. It also encourages local authorities to share

services and buildings with partners to help reduce running costs and to use the money from selling surplus property. 12 councils took part in the first phase of the programme, which is projected to save £21 million in running costs and to generate £88 million in capital receipts. Local economies are expected to benefit to the tune of £40 million, and estimates suggest the programme could create 5,500 jobs and 7,500 homes over the next five years. “This is very good news for the Council and for Cornwall” said Alex Folkes, the Council’s Cabinet Member for Finance and Resources. “We are already committed to using our assets more efficiently, and have saved millions of pounds of council tax payers money through our office estate plan which is enabling

us to make better use of our key buildings. “By redesigning New County Hall in Truro and Dolcoath in Camborne we have been able to move 850 staff out of expensive leased offices into Council owned buildings, and release other buildings for sale. We are now looking at repeating this in Penzance, where we are refurbishing St John’s Hall, and in Bodmin where we are creating a new building. Both schemes will reduce costs, address significant maintenance backlog issues in excess of £2m and enable services and partners to work more closely. “Schemes such as these will add to the work we are already doing with public sector partners, such as health and the police, to share buildings and services to reduce costs which is now saving £1.8m per year”.

Divine Helstonbury Several hours before standard Sunday opening time jugs of ale were poured and stood alongside loaves of homebaked bread at Helston’s ancient Blue Anchor inn in readiness for The Sunday Service and First Preaching of the Word in the Key of Spingo aka ‘The Helstonbury Communion’. Helstonbury, the highly successful music festival has been running since 2000 to raise money for local causes. Based in ‘The Blue Anchor’ in Helston, the festival is a great example of community spirit and how with good will and effort money can be raised while having fun. This year’s festival, over the last weekend of July, was the first to include a Sunday Service. The idea of conducting a Service at the festival was hatched between Petty Officer Paul Turton, festival organiser, and

Reverend Alastair Mansfield, both from Royal Naval Air Station Culdrose. Given that the festival is all about music, it made complete sense to make The Sunday Service a musical affair, and for this Paul and Alastair were able to draw on some superb resources: the melodic tones of the Culdrose Military Wives Choir -The CuldRose’s, HMS Seahawk Band, and on keyboard, Rev. Tim Wilkinson, (Alastair’s Oppo at the Culdrose Chaplaincy). The Service kicked off with The CuldRose’s’ treatment of Pharrell Williams’ irresistible Happy, and travelled from there all the way through Billy Taylor’s classic I Wish I Knew How (it would Feel to be Free), and Standing in the Need of Prayer to The Naval Hymn, Eternal Father Strong to Save. Throughout Seahawk Band and CuldRose’s provided the energy, volume

and finesse that encouraged people to get on with enjoying themselves. ‘Paul asked me to do something light hearted in the spirit of the event”, said Alastair, “and that’s what we did. It was playful and fun, but the whole event was in itself, intended as a message and we touched on some important stuff”.

And, behold, you were within me, and I out of myself and there I searched for you”, said the Chaplain. “That was one of the things I was trying to get at, and I’ve no doubt God was there, with us, in The Blue.’

Such was the spirit of enthusiasm and fun, among other things the congregation were treated to the sight of the Chaplain dancing with the band master (Band Colour Sergeant Dom O’Connor RM), and some of the choristers literally crying with laughter.

The sea came to Helston on Saturday 26th July Helston was full of song, celebrity and excitement on Saturday the 26th. Local traders, councillors, fishermen and supporters of the Fishermen’s Mission turned out in their 100’s to celebrate the opening of their first ever Charity Shop. Celebrity Chef, Nathan Outlaw, a long supporter of the Mission, opened the shop

together with David Dickens, CEO of the Fishermen’s Mission. The Cadgwith singers filled the street with sea shanty songs and the atmosphere was complete. In his opening speech, David Dickens cited the special relationship that we have built up with the town’s people of Helston, its tradition and that Cornwall in general lent itself

so well to being chosen as the right site for the first shop. The shop is about raising our profile and being a contact point for fishermen, active and retired but predominately it needs to raise the necessary funds as we receive no government funding and rely on generous donations.

39th St Martin Craft & Horticultural Show coming soon The 39th St Martin Craft & Horticultural Show will be held in the barn at Trewince, St. Martin on Saturday 23rd August 2014. The show will be opened at 2.30 pm by Derek and Susanne Carter. In the 2013 show over 100 exhibitors managed to produce just over 1000 entries, an amazing effort considering the very difficult conditions during the growing season. On the day over 500 people gathered together, in perfect weather, showing the importance of this type of event to local communities. This year's show will

be opened by Derek and Susanne Carter. Derek is a well known local author and historian and has been involved with the Horticultural Society for many years. Derek has held many positions on the committee including chairman. Susanne has also been involved with the Horticultural Society over the years including holding the post of secretary. She has been a keen exhibiter at the show and has been entering for over 30 years. Schedules are available from Newtown Garage, Mawgan Shop and The Old Withy Garden Nursery . Everyone is invited to enter, with

many new classes to choose from as well as old favourites. Particular emphasis has been placed on the children's classes again this year because they are the future of the show. During the afternoon the Cober Valley Accordion Band will be entertaining visitors to the show with their wide repertoire of music and the ladies of the village will be ensuring that tea and cakes are in plentiful supply. There will also be a raffle, face painting and a Charity Sales Table with this year's proceeds going to The Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal and Turn to Starboard.

zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz The 51 Jazz Club of Cornwall offers Traditional and New Orleans style jazz every Sunday from 1pm to 3.30pm at the Smugglers Inn St Erth Praze (on the Helston side of Hayle). The pattern is usually a well-known British touring jazz band once a fortnight and good local band on the Sundays in-between. The touring bands invited to play at the club are mostly chosen from those bands regularly featured at all the usual Jazz festivals around the country. The “Smugglers” has hosted jazz for over forty years and is a well-known and popular venue for bands touring the West Country perhaps also playing at Bude and Plymouth Jazz Clubs on their way to or from the far South West. These bands will often have hailed from London, Manchester, and Birmingham sometimes even from Europe, particularly Denmark and Sweden. The timing at the Smugglers has been a success over the years allowing people the opportunity of a good Sunday roast lunch whilst at the same time enjoying the jazz atmosphere. What is real?

What would you say the definition of imagination was? Most people would say imagination is thinking of something that is unrealistic, things that might not happen or more likely couldn’t or won’t happen. I could imagine me flying (if I could pick any super power it would definitely be flying!) through the sky, soaring like an eagle. That’s imagination. Or I could imagine my car turning in to a helicopter and lifting me out of the traffic jam and flying on to my destination. That’s also clearly imagination. Both unrealistic and beyond reality. I am making up something that couldn’t possibly happen. I could imagine big scary monsters however I wouldn’t be frightened as I know it is my imagination. However using this definition of imagination means that anything we think about that could be seen as ‘realistic’ is not by this definition imagination. Which means therefore it is potentially something you need to worry about. For example if I were to think about my car breaking down on a journey leaving me stranded and missing appointments etc. that is not beyond reality and could be a source of worry. However it then becomes a debate as to how likely is it going to happen. If I said it was a very old car and has broken down four times in the last two weeks then it is more likely to happen and perhaps it might be worth thinking about mitigating that risk. However if I said it was new and has never broken down then you could say it is just my imagination and not something to

worry about it. So using the definition of imagination being something that might not happen, or unrealistic it becomes a debate as to whether something is likely to happen or not. I would like to suggest a different definition of imagination. If imagination was anything that is not in the present moment then it is clearer what is real and what isn’t. We spend a lot of out time worrying about things that haven’t happened yet and we don’t really know if they are going to happen. So, if anything that wasn’t in the present moment was imagination we then see it for what it was, imagination, not reality. We can then let go of constantly worrying or thinking about things that we don’t know whether are going to happen or not. This does not mean not to think about the future, plan things, prepare for future events. These are all good things. However there is a different mindset with this kind of thinking about the future. When you purposefully think about the future through planning, visioning or preparing you know you are in the future and your thoughts do not take on the experience of reality. When you get caught up in worry you don’t realise you are thinking about the future that you cannot predict, you don’t make this distinction and you fall in to thinking about it as if they were reality, here and now. Any thought that is not in the present moment is fantasy. You cannot predict or control the future. Come back to the here and now and you get peace of mind, clarity and perspective.

Porthleven also has a great history of smuggling and wrecking (like so many other Cornish ports), which was helped by the treacherous rocks around port. It is also becoming quite well known for its ferocious storms in winter. People often visit the village when there are strong winds to watch the waves crash over the sea wall and pier. As well as being a beautiful fishing harbour village , Porthleven is also a bustling

busy place crammed full of fascinating shops and businesses. Cornish team on fact finding mission to Germany to understand what geothermal could offer Cornwall A senior team from Cornwall took part in a fact-finding mission to Germany, organised by EGS Energy, to explore and learn more about geothermal energy – the mining of heat – to potentially provide more affordable heat and power for Cornwall. The technology, which found a home in Cornwall at the Rosemanowes test site back in the 70s and 80s, could shape the future for renewable energy in Cornwall and provide a constant supply of energy with a low impact on the landscape. Representatives from energyshare, Cornwall Council, Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly Local Enterprise Partnership, DECC, EGS Energy, the Eden Project, Geothermal Engineering Ltd and Parsons-Brinckerhoff, met with Jörg Baumgärtner from BESTEC GmbH, a world-leading geothermal specialist, to discuss the deep geothermal plants that are planned for Cornwall and visit an operational plant in Insheim. The Insheim plant started with two wells being drilled to a depth

of 3,500m in 2008. After circulation and hydraulic testing in 2010 the plant was constructed and brought on-line in 2012. The Cornwall team were interested by the opportunities provided by the extraction of heat from underground to create energy for the German communities of Landau and Insheim and what this could mean for the residents of Cornwall. A study commissioned by DECC in 2013 suggests geothermal could provide constant electricity to 150,000 Cornish homes and affordable heat to help tackle fuel poverty and attract businesses into the county. Cornwall Councillor Tim Dwelly said of the visit: “This was a fantastic opportunity for the Cornwall team to experience first-hand how energy can be generated by deep geothermal plants and take real steps towards providing a sustainable future for Cornish energy generation.” Rob Love, Chairman and Founder of energyshare said: “It was incredible to feel the heat from the ground at the Insheim

Breakfast was well and truly served on Saturday 9th August 2014 courtesy of The Lizard Lifeboat fund raising team. The "Big Breakfast" was held in the village Reading Room in aid of The Lizard Lifeboat Station. Visitors were treated to a traditional Cornish or English breakfast freshly cooked and served by the members of the fund raising committee from the lifeboat station. Just over £600 was raised in a little over four hours which was hailed a magnificent amount. Huge thanks and appreciation go to everyone who came and supported the event.

Two more fund raising days are planned during the summer holidays. The annual Lizard Lifeboat Day is taking place on Sunday 17th August at Kilcobben Cove The Lizard from 12 Noon. Then on Saturday 23rd August members of The Lizard Lifeboat and any other willing participants will attempt to abseil a total of 8,848 meters (the height of Mount Everest!) in 25 meter sections down a steep cliff face near Kynance Cove. INGREDIENTS

650g Salad potatoes 3 tablespoons capers in brine, drained and rinsed 3 tablespoons chopped fresh mint 3 tablespoons chopped flat leaf parsley zest and juice of 1 lemon 3 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil

METHOD 1. Halve the potatoes lengthways and place in a pan. Cover with boiling water from the kettle, return to the boil and simmer for 15 minutes or until the potatoes are just tender.

2. While the potatoes cook, roughly chop the capers and place in a large bowl with the chopped herbs, lemon zest and juice and oil. Mix everything together with a fork then add seasoning to taste. 3. Drain the potatoes in a colander, then add to the bowl and mix everything together.

You may not think you have a business as you only do it part time at home, and you are not earning any income (at the moment!) – but you could well have a business for tax purposes and you don’t know it. Add up all of your costs that are directly related to your new business that you have incurred to date, including your “Use of Home” costs that I discussed a few weeks ago – go to my website Blog and check it out. Are your costs more than your revenue (if any)? If yes, then you have made a loss and you can offset it against your other income. This could be your employment income or other business income. You will lower your tax bill or even receive a tax repayment! If you have no other income, for example, you are a student, you can carry these losses forward and offset against future profits of your business. You will lower your future business tax bill. The only obstacle is that the taxman may challenge you on whether you have a business – you have to meet what are known as “Badge of Trade” rules. These are the tests the taxman uses to assess whether you have a

business or whether it is just a hobby. Basically, if you have a business you conduct on a regular basis, in an organized manner, with the intention of realising a profit, then it is a business. But you must have a serious intention to make money. A business plan, a cash flow forecast, a business name and all that would support your case to the taxman. It is not important if the taxman thinks the idea is a good or not. That is not the job of the taxman. What is important is that you are serious about it – think about the “Cow Hats”! Lastly, in Cornwall there is a huge amount of support for new entrepreneurs. There are start-up loans through the likes of SWIG – Google them. Oxford Innovation, Grow Cornwall and others can provide expert advice for new businesses. Contact them! There are grants you can obtain from the likes of B.I.G and the Business Innovation Fund – send them an email. They all want to help you. And it will support your case to the taxman that you have a real business. Talk with your accountant! Surf action fun! A great day of fun was had by children of Porthleven School at Praa Sands, including beach safety, crab hunting and of course surfing! Keen to encourage support of service families and their friends, Royal Naval Air Station Culdrose, Porthleven School, and Surf Action got together to create an event to put smiles on the faces of a number of local children. Surf Action conduct regular “Kids Surf Squad” activities on Tuesdays and Thursdays over the summer in Cornwall. Porthleven School have been very active in fund raising to provide amenities for their own service children and saw this as a great opportunity

to include friends as well. The Fleet Air Arm’s West Cornwall Air Station regularly supports many community activities and was delighted to be involved with such a positive initiative. The idea was hatched by Leigh Yates of Porthleven School Parent and Teachers association when she met Surf Action at Cornwall Armed Forces day held at Heartlands near Camborne in June. “Events like today are so helpful for spreading community spirit and support to service families and their friends”, said Leigh. “Porthleven School has so far raised £14000 to improve facilities for our children, which includes 17 schools in the educational

trust. We are very ambitious to raise more so that we can provide better facilities for all the children of our village and the surrounding area.” Charlene Bastedo of Porthleven School said: “We would like to say a big “thank you” to Surf Action and the Royal Navy from Culdrose for all their help in encouraging the children and having a really fun day today”. Justin Heath of Surf Action explained that the main focus for anyone they work with is to put smiles on faces. He added: “It is great to extend our activities specifically for the benefit of our service children and their friends. It has been lovely seeing the kids today”

Free weight management programmes offered to Cornwall residents as the new school term starts

Rewards for Family Learning Champions Family Learning, part of Cornwall Council’s Adult Education Service, have rewarded their Family Learning Champions by taking them and their children to Lanhydrock House near Bodmin and the National Maritime Museum in Falmouth. These groups have worked especially hard during their courses where the parents have enjoyed learning how they can better

support their children, while gaining new skills and brushing up on their own English and maths at the same time. Many parents are proud to have achieved qualifications in these and other subjects and several gained special recognition for their hard work at the recent Adult Education Awards Ceremony at New County Hall. Hayley Donald, a mum from St Newlyn East, said 'it

has been a chance to learn with the children and get together with other mums as well. When the children started full time school it was nice to have the chance to spend some time with them and find out how they are learning. It was hard when my daughter started school as she is my youngest and I missed her, so having this chance was wonderful. Thank you Family Learning for this

opportunity!' Kim Smale, a mum from Perranporth, added 'I got a great sense of achievement completing the courses and being part of a focus group has given me the chance to get more involved in my community which is really nice. The champions will be helping Family Learning recruit more parents across the county next term.'

A new term is a good time to start a new routine – as you make sure school uniform is ready, buy shiny new shoes, organise after school clubs, why not book yourself and your family into a healthy weight programme. Arranged at convenient times for families with children, the 12-week programmes are designed to develop healthy eating patterns for the whole family, including exercise, and practical cooking skills. And the most important thing is that they’re free, just needing a commitment of time. Cornwall Council’s Health Promotion Service has a whole team of professionals dedicated to helping you and your family lose weight, and maintain a healthy weight. Programmes are for families with children who are above a healthy weight aged 4-7 (in Penzance this time), and children aged 7-13 (Pool, Truro and Penzance). Teens are contacted on an individual basis. If there’s not one near you this time, then there will probably be one in January, as the programmes are held right across Cornwall. Cornwall Healthy Weight also run programmes for adults, both during the day and some evenings (Redruth, Truro, Saltash, Bodmin, Helston, Par and Bude). Booking is essential for all programmes, as places fill up fast. You can book yourself on, or you may be referred by a social worker or health professional. Felicity Owen, Director of Public Health, said, ‘Being overweight or obese is a factor in many serious illnesses including type 2 Diabetes, heart disease, and certain cancers. These family weight loss programmes have helped lots of families lose weight, improve their health outcomes and quality of life’. Tracey Barter, Healthy Weight Lead, explains, ‘Childhood obesity is a prob-

lem across the UK, so teaching children how to eat healthily is a great way to prevent them becoming overweight adults. If you or your family were feeling a bit self-conscious about wearing bathing costumes over the summer, and could do with losing a bit of weight, then take action now. “These courses aren’t quick weightloss programmes, they aren’t flashy diets which you can’t possibly follow for longer than a couple of weeks. They are weight management programmes, designed to help you think differently about food. You will learn about portion sizes, nutrition and exercise, and you can keep applying what you’ve learned for the rest of your life – and your children, for the rest of their lives too’. A mum wrote to Cornwall Healthy Weight to thank the team after she attended a 7-13 programme with her two children. She says, ‘We found the programme very rewarding, knowledgeable and fun. We all adapted to it reasonably easily and looked forward to the new challenges every week. At the end of the programme we found the results were fantastic and we were all very pleased that the children lost weight, and grew at the same time. Mullion back to winning ways with strong victory at Hayle It seems that all the lads from Mullion needed was the tonic of a trip to the seaside on the north coast to put them back in to their stride to achieve a long awaited win. Batting first on the Towans Mullion posted 195 for 8 against the team that started the day one place above them. Mark Hall hit 48, Jim Pearson 26 and Ben Johnson 24. In reply Hayle were restricted to 174 with Dan Johnson picking up 4 for 33 and Jonty Wheatley 3 for 34 to give their team a welcome 21 run win and 19 points. Helston are on a great run of form and at the end of the weekend find themselves third in County 1. They travelled to big rivals Troon on Saturday and collected a 50 run win. Helston scored 259 for 9 and will be pleased the runs were shared around. Dan Jenkin got 43, bother Steve 26,

county under 15's Tommy Sturgess and Ross Leathley 39 and 30 respectively while Chris Martin added 30 and Ben Rule 27. Troon were all out for 207 with Tom Retallack returning 3 for 33, Tommy Sturgess 2 for 26 and Peter Boyd 2 for 35. Porthleven just can't seem to win. Perranporth posted 249 with Mcdonald getting 4 for 32 and Ashley Morris 2 for 44. Porthleven did reasonably well with 162 for 8 Chris Higgs scoring 65. Helston seconds got a 5 wicket win at Stithians who scored 128, Dave Retallack 3 for 18 and Kanon Mathivannan 3 for 25. Mark Thomas 56 no guided the team home.
