Helston prepares for Flora Day

Preparations are underway for Helston’s biggest celebration of the year as the town gets ready for Flora Day. Thousands of people are expected to flock to Helston on Wednesday, May 8 to watch hundreds of dancers parade through the streets.

A rehearsal will take place on Wednesday, May 1 in preparation for the traditional day that stems from ancient celebrations of Spring. The procession will leave The Guildhall at 7am and again at 7pm.

Organisers say the public is welcome to come along and listen to the band as they parade through the streets.

The Notre Dame Fire Was Horrific: Lessons?

It is awful what happened in Paris last week: a historic building, over 800 years old, where Napoleon became Emperor in 1804, going up in flames.

I am not going to speculate on how it happened, but we all know it was a French builder having a sneaky cigarette behind the scaffolding. The French are like that; no respect for rules, no respect for “No Smoking” signs!

Now, it did get me thinking: what about the Palace of Westminster?

What about Parliament, Big Ben and the centre of democracy? It is a ticking time bomb just waiting to go up in flames. It is dilapidated, crumbling and about to fall down at any moment. Apparently it is going to cost £3 billion to ensure the whole complex is up to standard. Admittedly the risk is lower in England as we are sticklers to the rules, and would never have a mischievous ciggie behind the Speaker’s Chair. But there could still be an electrical fire or the cook leaves the deep fat fryer on overnight. There are numerous things that could happen, and then whoosh, it is all gone.

We need to act, and we need to act now, and it is going to be expensive,

very expensive. Why doesn’t the Government get on with these essential works? Well, MPs are worried about authorising the spending of billions of pounds, as it would be perceived as self-serving, as self-indulgent: £3 billion spent on their own offices and workplace, especially at a time of austerity. However, at the same time, we do not, as a country, want a “Notre Dame”! I mean that sincerely. The building is so historic, it is so much of our identity that to lose it in a puff of smoke would be tragic.

I have a solution to square this circle! Why not move Parliament, permanently, to somewhere more fit for purpose. And then renovate Parliament, and make it into a public space. It could be a museum, with lovely cafes and restaurants on the terrace overlooking the Thames. It would be fantastic for tourism, and it would be far more democratic, opening up this wonderful building to all!

The revenue earned from this would, over the years, pay off the £3 billion.

The public would not object to this as it would be a commercial venture. It would finance itself.

Where would Parliament be moved to? I believe it should be out of London, somewhere cheaper.

What about the old Co-op building?

It is available, and relative to London it would be a bargain, though the business rates are very high.

The MPs could negotiate a reduced rate with Cornwall Council, maybe.

And it is in a great location bang in the middle of Helston. I hope our local MP, Mr Derek Thomas, will take up this proposal when he returns to work. In addition, if the Government agrees to this move to Helston, I would be more than happy to give a discount for preparing the Government’s Statutory Accounts. This is a one off special offer to the UK Government. It is my way of helping the Government save a bit of money: every little helps and all that.

So feel free to pop in and see me!

If I do become the accountant for the Government’s finances I might not have the time to help you. I would be pretty busy, I would imagine. Do not panic though, as it is probably a few months away.

Heart:Beats Festival to hit the right notes for charity A FORMER DJ with a rare heart condition is organising her next charity music festival to raise funds for the British Heart Foundation and cardiac unit at Royal Cornwall Hospital.

Kay Harvey from Mullion was diagnosed with a condition called Spontaneous Coronary Artery Dissection in 2014 following a heart attack. Despite her conditon, Kay remains upbeat and is organising the Heart:Beats Festival to be held on May 5 at The Blue Anchor in Helston.

The festival, which starts from 11am, will be opened by Pirate FM presenters Johnny Cowl-

ing and Holly Day. Bands booked to appear at the festival include Not the Beatles, Rudi’s Message, The Olives, Good Old Fashioned Lover Boys, Small Wonder, Boundless Brothers Three Minute Warning, The Roosters and many more. The festival is sponsored by Phoenix Signs and Jake Riding Photography.

FIVE MALE voice choirs will come together and raise their voices in song for a special choral performance in Helston next week.

The Cornwall International Male Choral Festival regional concert takes place at The Central Methodist Church in Coinagehall Street on

May 4 from 7.30pm.

The collaboration will feature St Stythians Male Voice Choir, Barry Male Voice Choir, the Cornwall Boys’ Choir and two choirs from St Stithians College in South Africa.

Torque of the town – Audi S5 gains TDI power, 48 volts and an EPC FOR THE FIRST time in its history, the Audi S5 now has a V6 diesel at its heart. Underpinned by mild hybrid technology, it equips the peak performer with impressive staying power between fill-ups and delivers even greater immediacy of response courtesy of an electric powered compressor. The 3.0 TDI engine, which will be introduced in both the S5 Coupé and the S5 Sportback in late 2019, now produces 347PS and delivers up to 700 Nm (516.3 lb-ft) of torque to the crankshaft, available between 2,500 and 3,100 rpm.

The 3.0 TDI in the S5 models is the most powerful version in the Audi V6 diesel engine line-up. Both the electric powered compressor (EPC) and mild hybrid (MHEV) systems are embedded in the standard 48-volt main electrical circuit. For the first time in the S5 TDI, a powerful 48–volt belt alternator starter is the heart of the mild hybrid system with maximum recuperation power of up to 8 kW. A DC/DC converter steps this voltage down for components in the 12–volt electrical system. A compact, air-cooled lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 0.5 kWh installed under the luggage compartment floor serves as the energy centre.

Acceleration to 62mph in the S5 Coupé takes 4.8 seconds and and 4.9 seconds in the S5 Sportback, with both reaching their peak at an

The compressed air flows directly into the combustion chamber. This enables the driver to tap the full power of the 3.0 TDI instantly even at low engine speeds, whether passing another vehicle or accelerating out of a corner.

Because the technology increases torque at the lower end of the rpm range, it provides for lower engine speeds and less frequent downshifts during relaxed driving. From a standing start, the new S models quickly move several metres ahead of comparable vehicles without an EPC. The S5 Coupé TDI and S5 Sportback TDI make driving even more relaxed and comfortable with a wide range of driver assistance systems. Highlights include adaptive cruise control including traffic jam assist, collision avoidance assist, turn assist and rear cross traffic assist.

The Audi S5 models with TDI engines will be available in the UK from late 2019. Standard items of equipment include LED headlights with dynamic turn signals, tautly tuned S sport suspension and damping and power-adjustable front sport seats with Alcantara leather, embossed S logo and seat heating.
