Swallows gymnasts awarded town grant funding Swallows of Helston Gymnastics Club received a much needed boost when the Helston Town Council unanimously voted in favour of awarding £500 towards their roof repair project.

The gymnastics club, situated in Helston's Water-MaTrout, has been affected by the economic downturn and their premises has fallen into disrepair over the last couple of years. The roof has been leaking in various places for some time and the club have relied heavily on the generosity of volunteers to make repairs on numerous occasions.

Due to the recent storms and amount of heavy rain, there has been an excessive

amount of water ingress into the gym and the club had no option but to appoint a specialist roofing contractor to carry out the much overdue and expensive roof repairs.

Commenting on the award, Swallows of Helston Trustee Gary Wheat said: "It was fantastic to see the amount of support we received from all members of the town council at the town meeting. On behalf of all the staff and gymnasts of Swallows, I would like to thank the Helston town council for their financial assistance."

Swallows of Helston is a gymnastic club with approximately 350 members, ranging from around 3 years old to adults the majority of which are from Helston and

the surrounding area. A broad range of classes are run weekly, incorporating all ages, at recreational, display and competitive levels. The club operates a full school Key Step support coaching programme at local primary schools, with a number of schools choosing to attend the club for gym sessions.

The club is a UK registered charity which relies heavily on the support of volunteers.

94% of reception age children in Cornwall are allocated place in first preference school Parents of reception age children across Cornwall today received details of which school their child is due to attend in September, with the majority of children being allocated a place in their first preference school.

The Council received 5225 applications for new reception school places for pupils in Cornwall to start school in September 2014.

Of those 4910 (94 %) have been offered a place at their first preference school, with 315 pupils being allocated a place at either their second (169 pupils), or third (40 pupils) preference school. This means that 97.9% of children have been allocated one of their three preferences.

106 pupils (2.1%) have not been allocated a place at either their first, second or third preference school, but at the nearest school to their home address with room. All reception age pupils who applied for a school place in Cornwall have been allocated a place.

This is a similar picture to 2013 when 93.1% of children were allocated a place in their first preference school, with 97.5% being allocated one of their three preferences. 317 children did not get a place in their first preference school.

In 2012 93.1% of pupils were allocated a

place at their first preference school, with 97.4% being allocated a place in their second or third preference. 406 failed to get a place at their first preference school.

Based on the figures to date, there are 47 over subscribed primary schools for new reception September 2014 admissions in Cornwall. This is a similar number to the figure for the past two years, with 45 over subscribed schools in 2013, and 49 over subscribed schools in 2012.

There has, however, been an increase in the number of schools which are full for new reception admissions in September 2014.

71 out of Cornwall’s 236 primary schools are full, compared with 60 schools in 2013.

The Council’s admissions team have received 247 late applications for new reception places so far this year, with further late admissions expected in the next few weeks. The deadline for the second round of applications is 2 May. This compares with 447 late applications by the second round May deadline in 2013, and a total figure of 804 late applications by 31 August.

News that all Cornwall’s beaches have reached the top standard for water quality has been welcomed by Edwina Hannaford, the Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment, Heritage and Planning.

According to this year’s Good Beach Guide, produced by the Marine Conservation Society, the quality of the bathing water in all the 82 beaches in Cornwall which are regularly tested by the Environment Agency met the recommended standard.

“We are rightly very proud of our 300 beaches which are used by large numbers of local residents and visitors throughout the year ” said Edwina Hannaford. “The quality of our bathing waters is very important and we

work closely with a wide range of partners in the Cornwall Bathing Water Partnership, including the Environment Agency, South West Water, Surfers Against Sewage and the Health Protection Agency to provide beach users with up to date information about water quality.”

One of the main factors which can affect the quality of bathing water is heavy rainfall, with discharges from combined sewer outflows causing potential problems on occasions. The Council has been pioneering a response to combined sewer overflows (CSO) in partnership with SWW and Beach Live. In the event of a CSO discharging during the bathing season on Cornish beaches which are covered by the Beach Live initiative, signs are erected inform-

ing the beach users of the issue. If this occurs on a life guarded beach suitable announcements are made as necessary. Outside of the bathing season permanent signs are erected at Cornwall Council designated bathing beaches with CSO’s warning users that in the event of heavy rain the water quality may be affected for up to 24 hours after the rain has cleared. Surfers Against Sewage also send text messages to subscribers if there is a CSO. Staff from the Council’s Environment and Public Health and Protection services are also working with the Environment Agency to resolve issues of diffuse pollution from farm land that affects bathing water quality and ensure that investment is made in improving the sewage systems to pre-

vent storm overflows from discharging as frequently.

The Council is also working with the Environment Agency to trial Short Term Pollution Prediction (STP). This involves warnings being placed at beaches, when it is predicted that the bathing water may be affected by heavy rainfall washing bacteria from agriculture, urban runoff or sewage into the sea via rivers and streams.

Staff are also working closely with the Environment Agency and South West Water to help identify properties wrongly connected to the surface water drainage system in our service area.

Successful projects have recently been carried out in Bude, Falmouth and Truro.

Cornwall Trading Standards helps Home Office review Carpet • Vinyl • Laminate on ‘Legal Highs’ Cornwall Council Trading Standards has been working with Devon and Cornwall Police to investigate exactly what is inside ‘legal highs’.

Our local Trading Standards team took part in a sampling programme where legal highs were purchased from a variety of outlets across Cornwall and submitted, with assistance from Devon and Cornwall Police, for analysis.

Results showed a wide variety of substances were contained, however many of these were not listed on the packaging, leaving Trading Standards concerned that customers do not truly know what they are taking. In addition to this, many of the products are sold as “research chemicals” or “plant fertilizer” however they are given trade names which are a play on words with reference to illegal drugs and drug taking, leaving the consumption of the product open to confusion and

misinterpretation, with dangerous consequences.

Elizabeth Kirk, Senior Trading Standards Officer said: “The increase in the use of so called ‘Legal Highs’ is of great concern to both ourselves and the Police, as these substances are as easily abused as illegal drugs, and unfortunately many users think that because they are legal, they are safe. Although all the samples tested on this occasion only contain drugs that are legal on the open market in the UK, many of them are illegal in other countries around the world.”

Cornwall Trading Standards is sending out a warning to people about ‘legal highs’ and has called for details of the contents to be listed on the packaging.

Kim Hager, Manager of the Drug and Alcohol Action Team (DAAT) welcomed the initiative and the findings. Kim said:“It is time for these products to accurately detail their

contents, as with any other products on sale for consumption, so that purchasers can make informed choices and minimise the risks to themselves with regard to any particular ingredients.”

Geoff Brown, Cornwall Council Cabinet Member for Homes and Communities said: “Legal highs can carry serious health risks. Just the fact that a substance is sold as legal to possess, doesn’t mean that it’s safe. You can’t really be sure what’s in a ‘legal high’ that you’ve bought, or been given, or what effect it’s likely to have on you. The 51 Jazz Club of Cornwall offers Traditional and New Orleans style jazz every Sunday from 1pm to 3.30pm at the Smugglers Inn St Erth Praze (on the Helston side of Hayle). The pattern is usually a well-known British touring jazz band once a fortnight and good local band on the Sundays in-between. The touring bands invited to play at the club are mostly chosen from those bands regularly featured at all the usual Jazz festivals around the country.

The “Smugglers” has hosted jazz for over forty years and is a well-known and popular venue for bands touring the West Country perhaps also playing at Bude and Plymouth Jazz Clubs on their way to or from the far South West. These bands will often have hailed from London, Manchester, and Birmingham sometimes even from Europe, particularly Denmark and Sweden.

The timing at the Smugglers has been a success over the years allowing people the opportunity of a good Sunday roast lunch whilst at the same time enjoying the jazz atmosphere. Others come just for the music, the dancing and a drink or two. Whatever the reason for your visit you will be assured of a warm welcome at the Club.

Life can be busy and there is always things that need to get done, or you could do. There are probably times in the past when you think you would love to do something for you whether go for walk, go to a class or something but you decide you haven’t got time, so you don’t do anything. It is often an all or nothing approach when it comes to taking care of ourselves (as well as other things). It can be all too easy to find a reason not to do it.

It can seem like an effort. It is an investment and how many times have you regretted taking that time for you?

Probably none. We know we feel better for it but still something prevents us from doing it.

I find my job is quite sedentary (I am sitting down a lot with clients) so I want to ensure I look after my body/posture and keep active. I sometimes get frustrated when I don’t have the time to go for a run so can then find myself not doing anything. I can forget I could do 10-15 minutes yoga and get the physical and mental benefits of that.

Just taking the odd ten minutes for yourself can be extremely beneficial and anything more than nothing is good.

In ten minutes you could: • take a stroll round the block actively being in the present moment to notice sounds, nature, the fresh air • phone a good friend • have a power-nap/snooze • read a book/magazine What can you do for yourself today?

Remember: Anything more I want you to remember this than nothing is good!

The Lizard RNLI lifeboat launches to rescue a The Beauty Retreat child fallen from cliffs

The Lizard lifeboat was launched last week to a report of a 13 year old male fallen from cliffs at Bass Point, The Lizard.

Falmouth Coastguard requested The Lizard lifeboat crew launch after they received a 999 call from a party of adults and children coasteering at Bass Point reporting a 13 year old male with a suspected back injury.

The Lizard lifeboat was launched along with a search and rescue helicopter from 771 Squadron, RNAS Culdrose.

The Lizard lifeboat launched within 13 minutes of being paged and they were on scene within 5 minutes. Their daughter ‘Y’ boat was launched with two crew members on board.

The casualty was located in the water being supported by other members of the coasteering party. The casualty was taken from the water in a stretcher and along with one of the coasteering instructors, was taken to The Lizard lifeboat and then airlifted into the helicopter before being

transferred to the Royal Cornwall Hospital Treliske in Truro and after a full check up the child was discharged from hospital.

This comes only three weeks after The Lizard lifeboat and the coasteering team had taken part in a joint exercise to train for an incident like this. The coasteering instructors had simulated this exact incident

where a person had jumped into the sea landing awkwardly and hurting their back. The lifeboat then practiced using their stretcher to lift the casualty from the water.

Mechanic/second coxswain Dan Atkinson said ‘This was a well organised group of coasteerers. They did everything right and it was very good that we had

only just recently practiced this type of incident and we have update training with them on a regular basis.

Again the emergency teams all worked very well together and we are just please the young lad is ok.

WeeklyRecipe Chocolate Cereal Bars INGREDIENTS 200g caster sugar

235ml golden syrup 350g peanut butter 225g cereal (such as Special K) Reese's peanut butter cups, chopped up (optional) 170g milk or dark chocolate chips

METHOD 1. Lightly grease a long rectangular baking tray.

2. In a large sauce pan, combine sugar and golden syrup. Cook over medium heat until boiling. Stir in peanut butter until smooth.

Remove from heat and stir in the cereal. Pat the cereal

mixture down into the baking tray, spreading it out to cover as much as possible with out leaving holes.

3. Melt peanut butter and chocolate chips in the microwave. Spread the melted mixture over the cereal mixture and refrigerate to set.

Villagers sing it to show it It was a well documented tough winter for this fishing village as they were battered by the storms with the harbour ending up looking very empty as all the boats were taken out for the first time in memory.

The video is set to the theme of the Katrina and The Waves classic Walking on Sunshine - with the lyrics “We’re open for business” and shows what a fantastic village lies right here among us.

The troubles facing Porthleven made the front pages of several of the country’s biggest newspapers but the community spirit of the village shone through as they pulled together to repair the damage and carry on with their everyday lives.

Stunning season finale as Helston FC end Wendron’s 26-year run as pool champions One of the longest winning runs in local sport has finally been broken as Wendron Cricket Club A were pipped at the post last week in division 1 of the West Cornwall Winter Pool League.

Wendron Cricket Club have been division 1 champions for the last 26 seasons (Since 1988) but they have finally been beaten by Helston FC A. A record points total was needed to win the title as both teams gained an amazing run of great results over the last few weeks.

The football club went into the final game with a 2 point lead knowing they needed 8 points but lost the first frame however they found their form winning the next 8 against Rodney Inn B to ensure victory.

The winning squad were Dan Jenkin, Mark Jenkin, Simon Morrish, Gary Smith, Mark Thomas, Anthony Williams, Mike Torr and Chris Timmins.

Wendron CC A played Godolphin Club F in

their final game and Godolphin Club F, who were the only team to have beaten them this season acieved the double defeating them 5-4 again, singles wins coming from Ray Fox, Andy Bright and Fabian Johns.

Lizard FC A finished in third spot with a 7-2 win over St Keverne Band Club and Helston RBL A had a 6-3 win over Atlantic Inn A. Simon Morrish & Gary Smith (Helston FC A) finished top of the singles aggregate for divison1.

Mullion FC A lost their last game of the season in division 2 but they were already crowned champions a couple of weeks ago.

They lost 6-3 in their last game against Paris A but Scott Patterson and Chris Spurrier both won their singles to come joint top in the singles aggregate.

Helston RFC A defeated their C team 6-3 to come runners up and gain promotion but found themselves 3-0 down after the first 3

frames. Shane Orchard, Nick Butterill and John Curtis won their singles for the rugby club A team.

Lion & Lamb A team ended their season with an 8-1 win over Helston RFC B and Helston RBL B also finished well with a 7-2 win over Godolphin Club A. Division 3 champions, Helston Cricket Club ended their season with a 5-4 win and Jamie Borrett won his singles to win the singles aggregate.

Wins from Glynn Furnival, Craig Martin, Callum Martin and Craig Burley helped Wendron CC B to a 6-3 win over Mounts Bay and that was enough to earn them the runners up spot.

The Crown Inn finished well with a 7-2 win over the Five Pilchards and the Harbour Inn won 6-3 against Helston RFC D. There was a great finish for the division 4 title as longtime leaders just held off a fast finishing Potters Bar B team. Helston FC B

won 7-2 against Red Lion A in a rearranged game and knew any win would see them win the division however Potters Bar B won their last game 9-0 against the Queens Arms and the football club were 3-2 down against Potters Bar A but they recovered to win 5-4 and win the division by 1 point. Mark Mullen, Nathan Roberts and Barry Hennessy won their singles for the football Club.

Red Lion A and Red Lion C both gained 72 wins in their last games.

Note - The doubles finals will now be Monday 28th April at the Godolphin Club and the team knockout final between Helston FC A & Wendron CC A is to be played on Monday 5th May at Helston RFC. Note 2 - I am still waiting for summer league entries to be finalised but we are hoping to start on Monday May 12th.

Toyota executives set the scene for delivering fuel cell technology The next era in Toyota’s technology development is about to become production reality, with the market introduction next year of the company’s first hydrogen fuel cell-powered car.

It’s a major, but logical next step for the company, as it builds on the success it has achieved with hybrid over the past 15 years.

Karl Schlicht, Executive Vice President of Toyota Motor Europe, is explicit about Toyota’s commitment to hydrogen power and the potential of fuel cell vehicles to deliver on the company’s ambitions to develop the ultimate eco-car.

He says: “Our unique hybrid history and experience have proven invaluable for the next big leap. Back in 2010, we promised our first fuel cell car for 2015 and we are fully on track to honour our commitment.

“Fuel cell is a technology that can secure our concept of personal mobility. That’s because fuel cells combine the strengths of EVs (electric vehicles) and hybrids, with those of conventional cars. That means zero emissions – they only emit water vapour – and full usability; refuelling only takes about three minutes.”

Schlicht also highlights the facts hydrogen fuel is easy to store, is better at capturing renewable energies than batteries, and can be produced anywhere.

“Taking these facts into account reinforces how Toyota is convinced fuel cell can deliver our ultimate goal of zero emissions and sustainable transport,” he says.

The model with which Toyota will pioneer its new technology is the FCV saloon concept, shown for the first time in Europe at this year’s Geneva motor show. Schlicht

Quattro grip and TDi thrift for Audi A3 cabriolet range Longer spring days have just been complemented by the potential for lengthier spells of top-down driving between fuel stops in the new Audi A3 Cabriolet, which this week adopts a 1.6-litre TDI engine capable of over 72mpg.

Drivers who value tenacity in corners and increased capability in adverse weather as highly as economy can also now opt for new quattro all-wheel-drive versions of the 180PS A3 Cabriolet 1.8 TFSI. The additions to the originally threestrong A3 Cabriolet range can be ordered now, as can new S tronic twin-clutch-equipped versions of the 1.4 TFSI 140PS Cylinder-onDemand and 2.0 TDI 150PS versions. All the new variants will reach their first UK customers

in the summer.

Positioned as the efficiency champion in the cabriolet line-up, the particularly frugal 1.6 TDI lowers CO2 emissions to just 104g/km and can achieve up to 72.4mpg according to the combined cycle test. Initially available to order exclusively as a six-speed manual, the A3 Cabriolet 1.6 TDI needs 11.4 seconds to reach 62mph from rest and can continue to a top speed of 124mph.

Peak power from the 110PS four-cylinder unit is available between 3,200-4,000rpm and peak torque matches the similarly efficient 1.4 TFSI with Cylinder on Demand at 250Nm between 1,5003,000rpm.

Customers can choose the all-new A3 Cabriolet 1.6 TDI with SE, Sport or

S line specification options, all of which include features such as the MMI Radio with DAB digital reception and powered retractable colour monitor, preparation for SD card-based satellite navigation, air conditioning or climate control, light and rain sensors and an automatic fabric hood that opens and closes in less than 18 seconds.

Sport models also feature the Audi drive select system which fine-tunes driving characteristics, larger 17-inch alloy wheels, lowered sports suspension and front sports seats, while S line models are fitted with 18-inch alloy wheels, Xenon plus headlights with LED daytime running lights and S line interior and exterior design enhancements.

also feature a fully automatic acoustic fabric hood which is insulated by three layers of fabric to mute road noise even more effectively.

Sun-seekers who also want to enjoy their A3 Cabriolet at its best in less clement weather can also now opt for a 1.8 TFSI petrol model which offers the added reassurance of quattro all-wheeldrive. At the heart of the all-wheel drive system is a hydraulically actuated and electronically controlled multi-plate clutch which can send power from the front to the rear axle in just a few milliseconds. The clutch, which now operates without a pressure reservoir, weighs significantly less than the previous unit.

In the interest of better axle load distribution, it is located at the end of the prop shaft, in front of

the rear differential.

Inside it is a package of plates which rotate in an oil bath. During normal driving, the clutch sends most of the engine’s power to the front wheels, but if they start to break traction it can transfer torque in vary-

ing degrees to the rear axle almost instantaneously by pressing the sets of plates together under control.

Peak torque increases from 250Nm in the frontwheel-drive version to 280Nm in the quattro, which combined with the

optimal traction helps to bring about a slight improvement in the sprint time to 62mph from 7.8 to 7.6 seconds.

Top speed is 145mph, and combined fuel economy stands at 42.8mpg with emissions of 154g/km
