Residents rally to purchase chapel RESIDENTS of Godolphin Cross are rallying together to raise funds to purchase a Methodist chapel due to close this week.

The Godolphin Cross Community Association hosted a meeting to assess the best way forward as the chapel is due to close on Sunday. It currently houses two youth groups, a gardening club and a lunch and activity club for older people. The chapel is also the meeting place for a long-standing Women’s Institute group, a village coffee morning and a Post Office service.

Sea Kings lift off for the final time

RNAS Culdrose has waved goodbye to its iconic Search and Rescue Sea King helicopters for the last time.

After 42 years of rescue operations and saving more than 15,000 lives, the 771 Naval Air Squadron was formally decommissioned last month with the final three helicopters flying out on Monday.

At 15 minutes’ notice by

day and 45 minutes by night, the squadron provided a lifesaving service within a 200 nautical mile radius of the base. The emergency rescue service carried out over 200 rescues every year, ranging from plucking sailors from sinking ships to airlifting casualties of road traffic accidents to hospital. They also assisted the police in carrying out aerial searches for missing people.

Songs of Leonard Cohen star in intimate concert

The music of enigmatic songwriter Leonard Cohen will be the focus of a concert next week.

Singer Keith James, who was described by the Guardian newspaper as “certainly the UK’s most celebrated and evocative interpreter of golden music”, will perform the works of Cohen at a candlelit concert in the Poly Bar in Falmouth.

The concert of songs will include Famous Blue Raincoat, Sisters of Mercy, Suzanne and Hallelujah and poems by Federico Garcia Lorca set to music which are said to be Cohen’s greatest influence.

Laughing at vulnerable people Sun shines for food and music festival is now acceptable to some

A WOMAN appeared in court last week after being caught pleasuring herself on a bench in the centre of Truro.

Social media was awash with comedy quips along with a video of the incident which had been filmed by a laughing passer-by.

The 19-year-old girl had allegedly been taking legal highs and has a ‘number of difficulties’, including alcohol problems and has stated she has no recollection of the incident.

One so-called newspaper, The Daily Star, hypocritically printed an article explaining the circumstances of the incident but then still decided to post the video on their website.

So here we have a vulnerable teenager with mental and

emotional issues being filmed, and some people who should know better decide this is entertainment.

The man who took the video, a father of one who was in the region on holiday, said: ““I was disgusted, there were kids walking past, I was gobsmacked.”

Yet clearly not gobsmacked enough to step in and stop what was happening or at least try to cover the girl up to ensure those children - which he infers that he is concerned about - were not further exposed to the incident.

Instead, he decided to reach for his phone and film the girl before later uploading it to social media, thereby ensuring more children could view it. And this is a parent? Film night at his house

Like many others I imagine, I find it disturbing that so many people in society don’t seem to have the filter that tells them it may be wrong to view this as entertainment. The amount of ‘shares’ of the video on my own Facebook timeline by people I thought were friends, along with the mindless comments, have made me reconsider who I associate myself with.

The girl has been remanded in custody by the courts and I hope that rather than treating her like a criminal, they take the time to try and help her with her issues.

As good as the festival was, I was slightly disturbed to hear celebrity chef Antony Worrall Thompson using the f-word several times during his demonstration when children were present. Although we should be grateful that he paid for everything he took away from the event.

We now have a three-week wait until the next reminder of how we live not just in the best county, but the best district in Cornwall - the fabulous Flora Day. Helston and proud.

Galician guitarist makes Cornish debut

A SPANISH guitarist considered to be one of the greatest Spanish talents of his generation will be appearing in Helston next month.

Pablo Rodriguez will perform a programme of sensual Latin and Mediterranean music that has received critical acclaim worldwide. Work begins on 18 new homes for local village

THE first turf has been cut at a new development of 18 affordable homes in Crowntown near Helston.

The properties will be a mix of flats and houses and the scheme will include an area of public space and a school car park.

The new development will offer 12 properties for affordable rent and six for part-buy part-rent, to help local people get a foot on the property ladder with a shared ownership home.

Matt Ward, Head of Development at Coastline Housing said: “This development will be next to the local school playing field and is expected to satisfy the de-

mand for housing need in the Sithney parish for the foreseeable future.”

Choirs perform at national competition auditions

n First round of National Choir of the Year auditions coming this week to Truro

CHOIRS from across the region will compete in the first round of the UK’s biggest choral competition this weekend.

Singers of all ages will take to the stage at the Hall for Cornwall in Truro and attempt to impress a panel of expert judges and move one step closer to being crowned National Choir of

the Year 2016.

A wide selection of musical styles from classical to contemporary will be performed, and audience Choir of the Year is a remarkable programme which brings the whole country together in song

The hostswho moved into third in the league and have recently made it to the cup final took a two goal lead into the break and were testing the Helston keeper Barrie Wyatt hard forcing him to pull off a

number of saves.

Early in the second half Helston were awarded a penalty which Mark Goldsworthy duly fired home to make things more interesting.

However Godolphin captain Phil Lowry got a third for his side to ease tensions and see his team past the post with the three points.

Praa Sands Golf Club captain Andy Holmes led the way on Sunday as he won the Ford Trophy.

Anne Griffiths won the ladies Carpyssick Rosebowl Trophy and the Monthly Medal on Saturday from Alison Jacka. Barbara Wilkins was third from Linda Dunford.

HELSTON RFC are celebrating after their Colts team won the Cornwall Cup for the first time to complete a league and cup double.

They triumphed with an 8-7 victory over St Austell with a Dan Duval penalty and Ben Richards try proving decisive in the final at Wadebridge Camels.

They had not fielded a Colts team for three seasons until revived last year

under coach Paul Duval and mixed fortunes against older opponents seemed to enable the team to mature and they were the dominant side this season.

Having played 17 matches this season, they were unbeaten in the league and cup, with their only defeats coming in a friendly against Redruth and a tour fixture against Weston Hornets.
