One of the most fascinating Mesoamerican archaeological sites is that of Palenque in Chiapas, Mexico. Most notable for its outstanding monumental architecture and abundance of hieroglyphs found in the Temple of the Inscriptions, the medium size site of Palenque rose to power in the Maya Late Classic and rivaled Calakmul and particularly Toniná (hieroglyphs tell of an enduring war) for dominance. While hieroglyphs at Palenque provide us with an abundance of information about the lineage of rulers and the warring between city states, little is known about the non elite population, their settlements, and daily lives.
