Jim Crow Finds Its Roots In The Old Jingle Mocking Black

Jim Crow finds its roots in the old jingle mocking black men titled Jump Jim Crow. The song, performed by the white Thomas D. Rice covered in blackface, was meant to mock Andrew Jackson and his policies which were popular among populist voters (Woodward 2001). In a way, this event gave way for white Americans to ridicule their black counterparts using the phrase Jim Crow to single them out for their blackness as opposed the increasingly unpopular use of the word Negro. Over the next several decades, we saw the rapid decline of what little rights black Americans had and a drastic increase in incarceration of the same black Americans.

These set of laws and institutions that dismantled the humanity of blacks came to be known as the Jim ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The numbers do not make sense, America has less than half the population of China, yet has almost twice as many people imprisoned. How did we end up in this predicament? In the 2011 Report to the Congress: Mandatory Minimum

Penalties in the Federal Criminal Justice System, we can see a striking change in the focus of the criminal justice system throughout history (2011). In 1951, Congress reformed the way mandatory minimum sentences work in the United States. They did this through three key steps: first, they enacted more mandatory minimums that previously did not exist for many crimes. For many, this was seen as a tough stance against crime and overall a good decision. Second, minimum penalties were applied to many crimes that previously had no minimum sentence such as possession of controlled substances and firearms. For reference, crimes that have historically included a mandatory minimum are murder, treason, piracy, rape, slavery, and tax evasion. Third, mandatory minimum sentences were to be increased in length. In 1950, the percentage of whites in state and federal prisons was a staggering sixty nine percent, and by 1960 that percentage had dropped three points to sixty six percent. Meanwhile, the percentage of blacks in prisons had increased from thirty to thirty two percent, a two point increase. This small increase in percentage may not seem like a statistically significant number, but it serves to

System And Oppression Of The Panopticon

2.3.2. Panoptical System and Oppression The Panopticon was a metaphor that allowed Foucault to show the relationship between the people in a disciplinary situation and the systems of social control. From his view, the concept of power/knowledge comes from observing others. Michel Foucault is one of the European philosopher/historian who wrote prodigiously and influentially on the origins or archaeology of European social orders since the seventeenth century. For understanding of his work on social control is central to Siberian section of Nights at the Circus, especially chapter 3 and 4 show the escape of a group of prisoners. Social order is considered by Foucault through institutional practice or discourse that apply punitive and... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... They are like so many cages, so many small theaters, in which each actor is alone, perfectly individualized and constantly visible. The panoptic mechanism arranges spatial unities that make it possible to see constantly and to recognize immediately. In short it reverses the principle of the dungeon; or rather three of its functions to enclose, to deprive of light and to hide it preserves only the first and eliminates the other two. Full lighting and the eye of a supervisor capture better than darkness, which ultimately protected. Visibly is a trap. Carter shows this theatrical when she describes the hours of darkness in the female penitentiary during which the cell were lit up like so many small theatres in which each actor sat by herself in the trap of her visibility (ch.3, p.211). According to Foucault s observation through Bentham, power is always visible and unverifiable because the system of structure ensures that prisoners will always fell they may be being watched by invisible bystander but can never be sure whether the invisible viewer is watching them or not. The observer s invisibility combined with the Fictitious perception of total visibility amongst the observed that acts as a guarantee of order .* Fictional rhetoric and theatrical provide a situation to show the relevance of this episode beyond the

Classic Haemophilia

Haemophilia is an inherited blood clotting disorder where the blood doesn t clot properly because there isn t enough clotting factor VIII or IX in the blood of someone who is affected by haemophilia (ref). There are two types of haemophilia. The most common form, Haemophilia A, or Classic Haemophilia, affects people who are deficient in factor VIII and Haemophilia B, or Christmas Disease, affects people who are deficient in factor IX. Haemophilia can also be referred to as the royal disease because it affected royal families in England, Germany, Russia and Spain in the 19th and 20th centuries. Queen Victoria from the English royal family is believed to have carried the altered gene of haemophilia having a factor XI deficiency. In Australia there are approximately 3000 people affect by haemophilia and majority of them are males, with severe haemophilia extremely rare in females, but some females do have lower factor levels and bleeding symptoms. Abnormal bleedings had first been recorded hundreds of years ago, but wasn t announced publicly until 1803 when a physician from Philadelphia, John Conrad Otto, published an article about a hemorrhagic bleeding disorder that affect mainly males.... Perks Of Being A Wallflower Literary Analysis

Both narrative, Perks of Being a Wallflower and Boyhood tell unique coming of age stories. They share many similarities that includes the display of life in a very broad and realistic way, and how a child of innocence consumes the knowledge of reality and tries of cope with it. These two stories also showcase the physical and mental metamorphosis adolescents must face in their teenage years with the realization or reality balancing on their shoulders.

Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky, is a story about a normal 14 year old adolescent named Charlie Kelmeckis who had just gotten out of middle school, and now faces problems in his freshmen year of high school. In this story s unique vision, Stephen narrates the story through a series of letters that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

As time moves along, Charlie finds his calling in high school after meeting Sam and Patrick, or I like to call them the misfits . These two supporting characters take Charlie completely under the wing and expose him to things like drugs and explicit sexual content to relieve stress. Sam and Patrick show Charlie to let loose and find temporary happiness fore, they believe that lasting happiness is truly non existent. Charlie grows from an attitude of pessimism to optimism after finding that happiness differs from everyone. I personally believe there were two points of climax in this story line, one where Charlie and Sam share a moment in Sam s bedroom. Sam states ...If somebody likes me, I want them to like the real me, not what they think I am... (Chbosky 201). I believe this moment shows great growth significance because a Charlie has never felt such an intimate love for

The Sexual Dysfunction Problem for Men

Premature ejaculation (PE) is a frequent and under treated problem for males and their sexual partners. PE is the most common sexual dysfunction problem for men, with an estimated 14 30% of males ages 18 years and older reporting PE globally. However, the prevalence of PE is difficult to determine because of the ambiguity surrounding the definition of clinically relevant PE as well as the reluctance of sufferers to report their condition . Yet, most previously published clinical trials use the DSM IV TR definition of PE, defined as : A.Persistent or recurrent pattern of ejaculation occurring during partnered sexual activity within approximately 1 minute following vaginal penetration and before the individual wishes it (Note: Although the diagnosis of PE may apply to individuals engaged in non vaginal sexual activities, specific duration criteria have not been established for these activities) B.The symptom in Criterion A must have been present for at least 6 months and must be experienced on almost all or (approximately 75% 100%) all occasions of sexual activity (in identified situational contexts or, if generalized, in all contexts) C.The symptom in Criteria A causes clinically significant distress in the individual. D.The sexual dysfunction is not better explained by a nonsexual mental disorder or as a consequence of severe relationship distress or other significant stressors and is not attributable to the effects of a substance/medication or another medical

Value Of Life Essay

Hello class of 2018 , parents, family, friends, and SOAR faculty. I am honored to be addressing you guys today during our high school graduation. I never thought I would personally make it this far, but here I am.Today I would like to talk to you guys about the value of life. I am going to address my personal point of view on the valueof life, and how I feel about it. I know some of you might have never thought about how valuable your life is. Hopefully, by the end of my speech you will have a new perspective on life. Let s begin. Before I begin I would like to tell you guys what I think about life. Personally, I valuelife as something special, that should never be taken for granted. I strongly feel that life is special and even if you are wealthy or poor it does not matter because in the end you are still living. I feel that today in American society a lot of us do not value life as much as we should. This is due to the fact that we are so privileged that ist is hard to realize how valuable our life is. However, in poorer countries the people view life as something sacred and understand life s true values, and know how special it is. I would like to state that you cannot put a price tag on someone s life. But people begin to think what is a life worth? If you research online you will find that there are Human Life Value Calculator and personally I think these are inaccurate and inhumane. Essentially, what this calculator does is it takes your income, taxes, savings,

Authorship In Health Care

Key Issues Associated with Authorship in Health Care Research In the science community majority of the tangible rewards such as promotions, grants and contracts, honors and prizes, and status is based on the individual s publication record (Shamoo Resnik, 2009, p. 99). As a result, the researchers are rewarded for the quantity and quality of publications (Shamoo Resnik, 2009, p. 99). Therefore, proper acknowledgement of authorship is essential. An individual should be given authorship based on three terms that include: Substantial contributions to the design and conception, acquisition of data, or the interpretation and analysis of data Drafting and/or revising the article Final approval of the manuscript to be published (Homer

Tissue Ownership Essay

English II, 3rd Block

23 September, 2013

Tissue Ownership I think people are morally obligated to allow their bits and pieces to be used to advance knowledge to help others (Korn). Different people have opposing opinions on the topic of whether or not patients or doctors own the body tissues after it s been removed from the patient. Ownership is the act, state, or right of possessing something. Tissueownership is different from ownership because once it leaves your body, you no longer own it. Contributing your tissues to the science world is superior because you can speed up medical advances, avoid litigation, and become a better individual by contributing to science and society. One of the most... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Eventually, Moore hired a lawyer, who discovered that Golde had used Moore s Spleen to develop a valuable immortal cell line named Mo. Moore filed a lawsuit, claiming that his bodily tissues were his own property, and that Golde had stolen them. A series of rulings and appeals about his case launched an intense national debate. Golde won because he s the one who made the cells valuable. He did all of the work. This situation relates to this debate because if the doctor s would have had ownership over the tissues in the first place, none of this would not have happened. This also proves that the law is on the doctor s side. If doctors had ownership of the tissues and the right to do whatever they wanted to them, they would not have to go through all this trouble. Lastly, you can become a better person by contributing to science and society. Since everybody benefits, everybody can accept the small risks of having their tissue scraps used in research (Korn). Basically, donating your cells to science in order to help millions of people is morally the right thing to do. This is also a respectable thing to do. People should take pride in knowing that they have saved other peoples lives. It s not as if scientists are stealing your arm or some vital organ. They are using tissue scraps you parted with voluntarily (Skloot). It s not like they are taking a major part of your body away, it s something that you don t even need. It is

The War Bucket By Joseph Henry Sharp Essay

Native American art is not easy classified. Depictions of Native peoples shed light on the narrative Indigenous people have played in America and still fall into. The imagery used to depict Indigenous people are often romanticized by artist. Joseph Henry Sharp was a prominent painter of Native American people, most notable for his work with the Taos Pueblo Indians in New Mexico. Although Joseph Henry Sharp wished to depict what he and his contemporaries saw as a vanishing race, his work lacks cultural understanding and world perspective. His work often applies the pan Indian ideal to the tribes he encountered, mixing of tribal identities and traditions that would not have been common to all the tribes. His work also does not take into account the indigenous spirituality and connection to non autonomous objects. The War Bonnet by J. Sharp exemplifies his misunderstanding of the native people through the treatment of objects found in the painting. Joseph Henry Sharp had an extensive artistic career and was a prominent artist in the south west in the nineteenth and twentieth century. 1890 he was an instructor at the Art Academy until he went on a sketching trip to the south west and described it as an artist paradise when seeing the Taos Country. I find this interesting because one would think that a loss of that magnitude in an industry where they claim to be its core operation at Berkshire Hathaway would seriously hurt the revenue and profits for the year. It s explained that because of the many streams of earnings that that is why they would expect profits regardless. The next section labeled Regulated, Capital Intensive Business has a very interesting segment about Berkshire Hathaway Energy that personally helped me learn something new. It s mentioned that one of the factors that allow BHE to be able to service its debt under all circumstances is that it deals with recession resistant earnings. It s a concept that I ve never actually thought about before. The idea that no matter how bad a recession in an economy is that the utilities BHE exclusively provides are things that are considered to be essential services. Moving on to the section titled manufacturing, Service and Retailing Operations it s said that he has not made his last mistake in purchasing stocks or business and that not everything works out as planned. This interests me because it s easy to think that Warren Buffet such a successful man or on a more broad term Berkshire Hathaway can do no wrong because of how successful it s proven

A Research Project On Tesla Motor Battery

EE 451, Electric Vehicles

12/10/2015

Tesla Automobile Battery

Introduction

Our idea for this research project was to investigate, in depth, the characteristics behind the design, performance, and maintenance of the Tesla Motors automobile battery. In opposition to the Tesla Powerwall battery, and the SpaceX Hyperloop concept, also presented by Elon Musk, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of both Tesla Motorsand SpaceX, as well as chairman of Solar City, our analysis of the Tesla Motors automobile battery is completely limited to the scope of the automobile in particular, the Tesla Roadster, and Tesla Model S. Although Tesla Motors just recently came out with the Model X sport utility vehicle (SUV), and has a more economical Model 3 concept in the works, to be delivered two three years from present day, most of the publicly available data was in relation to the Roadster and Model S vehicles, hence our limitation to this scope. In particular, for the design of the battery, we chose to investigate the construction of the battery cells, battery module, and battery safety. In regards to the performance enabled by this battery, we investigated the different battery packages available, in terms of energy capacity, and compared their performance to a gasoline powered car through the quantity of MPGe mile per gallon equivalent. Last, we delve into the maintenance and owner operation of the Tesla Motors automobile battery comparing the
