Stump Research Paper

Stump and Prosthesis Care

When an arm or leg is removed, it is important to care for artificial body part that replaces it (prosthesis) and for the remaining end of the arm or leg (stump). Caring for the stump and prosthesis will help you be comfortable, active, and healthy.

HOW TO CARE FOR YOUR STUMP

Cleaning Your Skin

Wash your skin with a mild, antibacterial soap at least once a day.

Wash your skin after getting dirty or sweaty.

After you have washed your skin, pat it dry. Then let it air dry for another 5 to 10 minutes.

Do not soak your stump in a warm or hot bath for longer than 20 minutes at a time.

Avoid shaving hair on the stump. Hair that grows out after being shaved is more easily irritated by the prosthesis. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This can keep the scar soft and help it heal.

Do not put creams and lotions on your stump unless your health care provider says it is okay.

Do not use lotions that contain petroleum jelly or skin care products with an alcohol base. These products can be harmful to your skin. They can also damage the lining of the prosthesis.

Consider using an antiperspirant spray on the skin of the stump.

Other Instructions

Every day, look closely at the skin on your stump. Use a mirror with a long handle to check areas you cannot see, or ask a friend or family member to check those areas. Look for areas that are reddish, swollen, or look irritated. Pay extra attention to places where the stump and prosthesis rub together.

If you were instructed to wear a compression stocking when you are not wearing the prosthesis, make sure to wear it as directed by your health care provider.

HOW TO CARE FOR YOUR PROSTHESIS

Cleaning Your Prosthesis

Use hot water and antibacterial soap to wash your prosthesis.

Attaching Your Prosthesis

Make sure your prosthesis is clean before you attach it to your stump. All the parts that touch your skin should be clean and

Russian Revolution Dbq

Research Question: Was the Russian Revolution a Successful Revolution?

The Russian Revolution of 1917 was unsuccessful because of how it did not accomplish the initial goal of establishing communism, internal social and economic issues within Russia, detrimental effects of rapid industrialisation and became the catalyst of a civil war. The defeat in war against Japan, in 1905, led to increased opposition to the Tsar, who was viewed as incompetent. The war was also important in intensifying and worsening longer term social and economic problems, as it caused food shortages, high prices and unemployment the factors which motivated many to take part in the march on the Winter palace that resulted in Bloody Sunday (Document A). The Tsar was... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Due to Russia s sheer amount of citizens in the country, it resulted in a overcrowded society, poor housing along with poor living and working conditions (created by economic problems in Russia) led to social tension in cities. In terms of land and agriculture, the Russians had methods that were inefficient and backwards as they still used wooden ploughs and very few animals and tools. With not enough land to go around (due to the controlling of private property), vast expansion of peasant population in the later half of the 19th century led to overcrowding and competition for land. The diverse people of Russia desperately needed a social reform. With peace established with Germany, the of lack of a compete control over the country then led to the civil war immediately after the Bolsheviks assumed power. The Reds (communists) and the Whites (anti communists, Capitalists, western forces) fought a series of battles that resulted in countless deaths. The White forces received support from the Western Allies during the internal war. The United States, England and Canada had contingents of men inside of Russia initially to guard supplies they had sent during the war, but they were in a position to fight if their governments thought necessary. The Red Army was able to defeat the much larger White armies over the course of the three year

A Brief History of the American Kennel Club

Man s best friend, or as people simple call them, the dog has been a part of family life thousands of years. Ever since the beginning man and dog have lived side by side. Whether as guard dogs, hunting buddies, or simply a member of the family it s impossible to have never seen or heard of a dog. Organizations have developed means of determining which dogs are the best of the best. Today the most recognizable and known organization for dogs is the American Kennel club, or AKC. The AKC was founded by a group of men on September 17, 1884 after twelve of them received a summons in the mail by Messrs. J. M. Taylor and Elliot Smith. The men that Taylor and Smith gathered each had held a significant place in different dog clubs. These men were highly skilled in their individual styles of dog shows and it was on this expertise that the American Kennel Clubwas born. Being composed of men from all different types of kennel clubs and shows, this was the first kennel club to cover a whole variety of breeds instead of one specific class. At their second meeting in Madison Square Garden a few months later Major James M. Taylor became the AKC s first president, having written and delivered many of the founding laws the AKC still follow today. During its first years the AKC developed a type of organization still used today, the National American Kennel Club Stud Book which listed all the studs, unneutered male dogs, that the AKC deemed best in their breed. During the early

Plea Bargaining Advantages

Plea bargaining is becoming progressively popular over time passes there are many prisoners that have decided to go the route of accepting plea deals. Plea bargaining is referred to a situation where the prosecutor and the defendant arises to an agreement whereby the defendant pleads guilty to a case so that he or she can be given a concession or a lesser sentence. Plea bargains often occur after a careful analysis and acknowledgment of the strengths and weaknesses of a case.

In the U.S. Criminal Justice System, a defendant may be motivated to take a plea bargain. Reason being is because plea bargaining takes away the hesitation of a criminal trial and circumvents the maximum sentence.

Most plea bargains offer reduced charges, which not only comes with a reduced sentence but does not look as bad on the defendant s permanent record. Pleading guilty or no contest in exchange for a reduction in the number of charges or the seriousness of the offense looks a lot better on a defendant s record than the convictions that might result following trial. ... If a case goes to trial, the defendant might suffer with anxiety over whether he or she will get off or be convicted and receive the maximum sentence. This can also come with the fear of humiliation that is associated with spending time in jail and the likelihood of being separated from family and friends. Going to trial can be risky because it is impossible to predict what a jury will decide. This is because plea bargains are becoming more popular today. Seeing how a plea bargain can provide a defendant with a sense of relief that is mainly caused by the uncertainty and possibility of being charged with a

The Nifty Fifties Research Paper

Let s just say that the weatherman may have been a little off on his forecast. It was most definitely not chilly, clear, and 55 degrees fahrenheit. There was at least a foot of heavy and wet snow covering the roads and to make matters worse, it was the night of the big show! It was the night of our schoolplay that had been completely sold out, and now it was going to be nearly impossible for the cast, and audience to even see our hard work we put into The Nifty Fifties. Especially when matters were about to get even more out of hand. But as every good performer would say, The show must go on! The preparation for the Nifty Fifties was unlike anything I had ever done before. In the past I had sang at school concerts, and variety shows, but never have I took part in the school play. Participating in the musical performance class was something pretty serious at Interstate 35 High School. Although we are a small school, that just meant we had less people to work with, and more time to put in. On top of getting my education, running cross country, and working part time at Hy... We both got our makeup applied quickly, while we ran through our lines, and everyone knew one thing. The show was going to happen. No surprise blizzard, or car accident would stop the school play from going on!

Only a small percentage of the people who had bought tickets were unable to make the show. And it was really too bad that they were not able to make it, because it was reviewed by many who attended to be the best show that Interstate 35 had ever put on. And I got to be a part of it! Ziggy Springer was able to sing, Oh Baby! , at the top of his lungs to screaming teenage girls dressed in poodle skirts, sign plenty of autographs, and give his fans lots of hugs. The show was amazing, and everyone around me was amazing. The night was simply

Duddy Kravitz as an Anti Hero

Lindsey M. Burns

English IB 1, Higher Level

10 October 2013

Duddy as an Anti Hero In his novel, The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz, Mordecai Richler portrays the character of Duddy as an anti hero. Richler develops Duddy in this way through close relationships with other characters and family members. Various negative traits of Duddy were shown in his business career as well. Mordecai Richler developed the character of Duddy as an anti hero to highlight complexity in individual people.

Throughout the entire novel, Duddy idolizes businessmen he meets and develops various personality traits through these relationships. After graduating from high school, he has a summer job waiting tables at Rubin s hotel outside ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... His sarcastic response shows that Benjy was not a great family member and certainly did not care about his employee s working environment. Benjy was not kind to Duddy; he favored his brother Lennie. Benjy believed Lennie would be the successful brother and therefore he did not want to waste time on his other nephew who was very irritating and unmotivated. All of Lennie s schooling expenses were paid by Benjy. The large spending habits on Lennie shows that Benjy may have wished he had a son of his own to father, and that he felt like he needed to fill an empty space in his life. Duddy becomes very dishonest throughout his career, a trait that was not received by his uncle. Although Benjy may not be the most thoughtful man, he is brutally honest. When he is ill with cancer, Duddy confronts him about how he only treated Lennie well. Benjy s response is Let s not pretend. Everybody has his favorites. (Richler 285). Duddy is motivated to prove his uncle wrong by being a success and making lots of money in his own business. Duddy asked Benjy you think I should be running after something else besides money? Good. Tell me what. (Richler 287). This dialog displays how Duddy did not think anything compared to having money. He also was extremely unsympathetic towards his uncle s sudden illness, and shows no remorse or forgivingness towards his uncle. Benjy only had one opportunity to see Duddy before he passed away. He left a letter of advice for Duddy that explains how

The Shadow Of A Gunman

The

Shadow of a Gunman by Sean O Casey

In nineteen twenty three, Sean O Casey released a book of three plays all of which were performed at the prestigious Abbey Theater. Three Dublin Plays , was broken down into exactly that, three plays; The Shadow of a Gunman, Juno and the Paycock, and The Plough and the Stars. Of those three, I chose to examine The Shadow of a Gunman. This was the very first of the three plays to be accepted into Abbey Theater and is set in May of 1920. The author himself, Sean O Casey, was a huge supporter of the patriotism flowing through Ireland. Originally born John O Casey, his named was changed once he felt the nationalism taking over the country, and decided himself to learning the Irish language. In The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One last point that I believe will tie everything together by the end is that of romanticism in relation to nationalism. Although these themes sound similar they each have their own distinct differences, and I believe intertwined is what made this play great and gave the audience something to gravitate to because it was relatable in their own lives, and soon enough it will be explained just how. In the Second Act, Davoren s roommate Seumas Shield s makes a comment in reference to the war that is continuing to rage on: The country is gone mad...It s the civilians that suffer...Shot in the back to save the British Empire, an shot in the breast to save the soul of Ireland (Pg. 40) Shield s continues on past this line on his belief that this battle for nationalism is a much more dangerous environment for the average citizen than it is for the forces actually fighting. The shot in the back by the British obviously is illustrating the ill fated relationship between the two sides, as the British do not care about the Irish and who they are, referring to them British as cowards for shooting behind them. As for the breast shot to save Ireland, it is important he notes the shot in the breast, right in the chest. The opposite position of the shot shows how even right in front of you, you can still be killed by your own people to save

Ireland . This connection shows Shield s more of a cynical view of nationalism, as seen in Irish

Essay about Ulysses S. Grant

Ulysses S. Grant

General Ulysses S. Grant s brilliant siege of Vicksburg had a significant impact on the surrender of the Confederacy. This Vicksburg campaign was significant due to the fact that it basically gave the Union total control of the Mississippi River. This meant the isolation of the West and basically a clear waterway for supplies to reach the Deep South. Once this waterway was open arms, food, and soldiers could be provided for the Union soldiers in the South and open a devastating wound in the heart of the Confederacy. Once Vicksburg had been taken the West would basically be isolated and under the Unions control; in addition Grant could focus on the heart of the South. Once Vicksburg was captured, and Grant advanced ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... But here, too, it was cut up by ravines and small streams #8230; Grant then continues to describe the enemy s positions upon the high bluffs of Vicksburg. It is very important to understand the extreme defensive location of Vicksburg, to perceive the superior leadership of General Grant to capture it. When New Orleans fell in the spring of 1862, the triumvirate Vicksburg, Grand Gulf and Port Hudson was destined to become the last obstacle to the total Federal control of the Mississippi. Abraham Lincoln thought Vicksburg was the key, so Vicksburg was the focal point of Union strategy. Obviously, Vicksburg was one of the most important objectives of the Union army. General Ulysses S. Grant was placed in charge of the Vicksburg campaign. He was an exceptional strategist and arguably one of the best generals this country has ever seen. His campaign, while often overlooked by the general public, is considered by some historians to be brilliant. In this highly readable treatment of the Vicksburg campaign, historian James R. Arnold, makes the case that Grant s adroit military maneuvers were the equal of Napoleonic campaigns. The Confederates also realized the extreme importance of Vicksburg and were going to do anything in their power to hold on to Vicksburg. Confederate President Jefferson Davis said, Vicksburg is the nail head that holds the South s two halves together. General John C Pemberton was in charge of

Sociocultural Vulnerabilities on the Transmission of the HIV/AIDS in South Africa

The HIV/AIDS epidemic in South Africa has been largely driven by the distinctive interaction of sex, gender, and power relations. Cultural norms regarding gender dynamics are a critical area of inquiry when it comes to understanding the course of HIV/AIDS in rural South Africa. Many of the key questions on the intersection of biological and cultural factors in the transmissibility of HIV can only be answered through anthropological knowledge, insight, and research. The degree to which the epidemic in South Africa is spread through customs and practices are critical concerns for the health sector, which a biocultural anthropological perspective is uniquely ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This allowed those who did not belong to these high risk groups to imagine that they were immune from infection. Minorities on the margin of society were often blamed for the spread of the disease (Feldman 48). Those who were infected were believed to be the victims of their own immoral behavior. These perceptions added to the stigma attached to AIDS. The South African government neglected the topic until the epidemic had spiraled out of control. But by 1989, it was clear that the AIDS epidemic in South Africa was mainly heterosexually transmitted (Feldman 29). The disease now overwhelmingly affects poor heterosexuals.

In severity, however, South Africa s story of HIV and AIDS is unique even in Africa. It remains the country with the largest AIDS epidemic in the world. South Africa is home to the greatest number of HIV positive people in the world, totaling over 5.7 million in 2007 (UNAIDS 40). But why was South Africa hit so hard when other countries came away comparatively unscathed? The answers can be found by examining South Africa s social structure, looking at issues in traditional society such as gender inequity, polygamy, promiscuity, condom use, dry sex, widow inheritance, rape, and women s societal role. When we consider these issues and customs that keep African women powerless, we begin to realize why these causes represent well more than half of all cases of HIV transmission, and why factoring culture into the equation is so vital (Biakolo 43).

Country As A Developing Country

Honestly, one would think that in todays modern world every country should be developed. However, few realize that there are still many developing countries. Mostly due to ignorance, and the majority doesn t pay attention to the needs of developing countries. For instance, the only time a person may think of a developing countryis when the see the commercials on television, and believes that this must be the only issues facing developing countries. Normally, people visualize those commercials asking for money to feed, or asking for help of some type of medical expenses. Take the United States as an example, and often this country would release funds to foreign aid before their own citizens. Which could easily cause tension amongst the government and the American people. According to, SAE there are about 137 developing countries, and countries that earns on average 11,905 or less are a developing country. There are many different choices when comes to picking a developing country. However, the country of Sierra Leone will be the country up for discussion. Sierra Leone is one example of what the World Bankconsiders to be a developing country, and it is in West Africa. As well as, the capital, Freetown , was founded as a home for reported former slaves. Currently, Sierra Leone has a population of about 6.1 million citizens, and on average the life span expectancy is 48 years old male, and 49 years old female. However, this country s most brutal civil war ended in 2002, and
