Neil Postman s Essay The News

The whole problem with news on television comes down to this all the words uttered in an hour of news coverage could be printed on one page of a newspaper . The average news cast is only twenty two minutes long, and that s not nearly enough time to cover the days events. In Neil Postman s essay The News Postman talks about the structure, content, and goals and results of a televisionnews cast. The news can be compared to the theatres in terms of its structure. According to Postman, Music takes us immediately into the realm of the symbolic, a world that is not to be taken literally. Every news broadcast begins with music and progresses, just like any narrative. There are characters, a setting, rising actions,a climax and a resolution. These

Even though the Qin dynastydid not last that long, the empire had a long lasting impact on Chinese history. Right after the fall of the Qin dynasty, Han dynastycomes in. The Han dynasty lasted 400 years after Qin dynasty. Also during the period of Qin and Han dynasties started to connect China with Romans and western world by the Silk Road. The two dynasties were similar in that both had an idea of an emperor and the two dynasties

Significance Of Old Major s Speech In Animal Farm

In the story, Old Major is a hog that has won many awards. He calls for a meeting with all the animals in the big barn on the Manor Farm owned by Jones. Old Major revels his dream of living a free life with the rest of the animals in freedom; he does not want to be controlled by the humans. To show his need for freedom, Old Major sings and teaches them a song called Beasts of England. After learning the song and hearing of Old Major s dream, the other animals develop a want for freedom too. Old Major s speech sends the message that maybe a rebellion is needed to finally live a free life. Sadly, Old Major dies three days after he gave the speech in the barn. However, even though Old Major has passed, the animals remember the want for freedom.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Napoleon declares that whoever is on Snowball s side and does not agree with Napoleon, will be killed by his dogs. Napoleon is described as being a human ; he drinks alcohol, sleeps in a bed, and trades. So far, the Animalism beliefs are not being completely followed. Mr. Frederick, the neighbor, attacks the farm and ruins the rebuilt windmill. During the fight, Boxer is hurt and becomes weak. When Boxer disappears, Squealer tells the animals that Boxer was taken to the hospital and has died. However, Boxer was actually sold by Napoleon to buy more whisky. After a couple of years, the pigs have become even more like animals and more like slave owners; carrying whips, wearing clothes, and walking on their two back legs. After some time, the seven commandments of Animalism was broken down into one; the one commandment was that all animals are equal, but some animals are greater than others. Napoleon tells a farmer, Mr. Pilkington, that he wants to make a partner with the humans. Napoleon decides to change Animal Farm back into Manor Farm. In the end, the animals cannot separate the human beings from the

Individuals with Mental Disorders

Many groups of people have experienced disenfranchisement over the years. Some groups included people suffering in political prisons to the of abusement towards the elderly people all over the world. The mentally ill are a part of this vast group of people. Mental illness is any disease of the mind and also the psychological state of someone who has emotional or behavioral problems that are serious enough to require psychiatric intervention. People with different mental disorders are given different kinds of medical care, given different treatment by everyday people, and are put into hospitals which is like living in hell. Some states allow police officers to come into a person home and escort them to a jail if they have been reported as mentally ill. These patients are treated badly because they are running out of places to be put. The living conditions in mental hospitals are not very clean. New York Daily News reported that psychiatric hospitals are like living in hell (NY Daily News). The group interviewed Arthur Swafford after his visit to Kings County Hospital last year when he was looking for help. He described how he slept, telling about the rodent infested floors in the very overcrowded ward. The bathrooms were covered with smears of feces and guards kept order by abusing any patient that dared go out of line. President of Health and Hospitals Corp., Alan Aviles, admitted that he knew about the overcrowdedness but said that the lawsuit as greatly inaccurate along with irresponsible. Swafford also explained about the lack of beds. I ended up sleeping on the floor with a sheet by a water fountain that was leaking. I m seeing mice run across and around the room, he explained. I saw officers take a billy

Merton s Strain Theory

Deviance and Sanctions Deviance might be necessary for a society to function, but in today s society it s set up in a way that encourages deviance or rejects deviance. Merton s strain theory argues that society acts upon deviance, specifically the extent and type of deviance people engage in. These actions depend on whether society provides the means to achieve a cultural goal. For example, the means can stand for opportunities in a person life or their schooling, but how will this person achieve this goal ? Will the person achieve the goal through a deviance act, following the rules but not achieving their goal, or maybe rejecting both culturally approved goals and means. When you start reading the the four different Merton s strain theory... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Thirdly, Retreatism involves rejecting both the culturally approved goal and the culturally approved means of getting to those goals. This strain is like a screw it mentality and someone has given up on everything due to repeated failure. Alcoholics, drug addicts or high school dropouts are know to be retreatists. I had many friends in highschool that were retreatists it was a shame watching my friends fail repeatedly without trying achieve a goal. The Necklace Greed

In Guy de Maupassant s The Necklace, Mathilde is blinded by her desires until her life is changed forever. Even though Mathilde has a wonderful life, she yearns for more. Her husband struggles everyday to please her need for power and pride. With a greedy, sinful voice calling her by name, she is deprived of the joy that affection can bring. The journey that Mathilde travels, due to her need for a higher social status, ultimately causes her to realize the love in her life. Mathilde is a young lady who constantly craves to have everything her social class cannot afford. In Maupassant s short story, he states, She had no dresses, no jewels, nothing. Forestier, Mathilde and her husband put all their savings together and get a loan to pay for a new necklace to replace it. With hard work, they replenish the money they spent on the necklace and Mathilde learns to be content with life. Once Mme. Forestier reveals that the necklace that is lost is paste (73) and worth way less than its beauty, Mathilde s life is already traveling down the path of transformation. Through this experience, Mathilde learns confidence. She learns love and devotion. Maupassant

The Passion of the Christ, by Mel Gibson has taken America by storm. In the US alone, it made $83,848,082 its first weekend. As of April 25, 2004 it has grossed worldwide over $364 billion. Not bad for a movie with a budget of $30 million.

The movie is subject to a lot of criticism. People are worried about many things. Are the images depicted correct? Is it too gory? What will people s reaction be? Will any demographic of people get hurt from the movie? A Catholic teacher from California was fired for offeringstudents extra credit to see the Passion. Al Qaeda Terrorist Group

Al Qaeda Terrorist Group

William Barnes

December 8, 2005

Abstract

Al Qaeda is arguably the most well known and most dangerous Islamic terrorist organization in the world. It was established around 1990 by a Saudi millionaire, Osama Bin Laden, to bring together Arabs who fought in Afghanistan against the Soviet invasion. The goal of the organization is to reestablish the Muslim state throughout the world. Al Qaeda works with allied Islamic extremist groups to overthrow regimes it deems non Islamic and remove Westerners from Muslin countries. Groups affiliated with Al Qaeda have conducted numerous bombings and other violent attacks throughout the world that have resulted in the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

These plots included the bombings of the African Embassies in 1998 and the September 11, 2001 attacks. Following the September 11, 2001 attacks against America, American led forces toppled the Taliban regime in Afghanistan. Approximately half of the senior Al Qaeda leadership was captured during the American led campaign, along with crippling the group s communication network. The exact size of Al Qaeda is unknown, but the group likely has several thousand fighters. The estimated numbers of people who trained in camps or fought in Afghanistan ranges from 20,000 to 60,000 but these are not all Al Qaeda members. Al Qaeda serves as an umbrella organization that carries out its own terrorist acts as well as a focal point for other extremist groups. Some experts believe that Al Qaeda is an organization in transition. The losses of many of the group s leaders and their base in Afghanistan have disrupted the organization. While Al Qaeda s definitive structure is unknown, experts fear that the organization can continue to operate if they lose senior leaders due to the entrepreneurial spirit in its lower level fighters. Al Qaeda is a network with global reach and is reinforced by its ties to Sunni extremist networks. Until the American led attack, Afghanistan was where Al Qaeda s base of operation, logistics, and training facilities were. Al Qaeda has since branched out and has cells or collaborators found in south Asia, Southeast Asia, the

Cole And Jesus Transformation Essay

Cole s key ideas is that we are lowly and broken, but that is just who Jesus is calling. God calls those who struggle to follow Him and undergo a great transformation. Discipleship must start with people who have a severe need for Christ. A transformation which will bring deserved glory to God s name. God loves to recycle, He uses those who are looked at as worthless and broken by the world. Those who are most aware of their own sin and depravity are most readily to be used by God. They are humbled by the consciousness of their sin, aware it is not their success, but what God has given them to further His Glory. One does not have to be qualified and educated to be a successful disciple of God. You do not need a Christian upbringing, Bible college education, or every verse memorized: you need only have a passion for God. All are called to the great commission, a passion and love for the Lord makes you qualified. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Even if it seems like we have little to offer the Lord, in the hands of Jesus we are enough. I can state it no more profoundly than Cole Himself. We need to turn to Jesus with what little faith we have and say Here is something, not much, not enough, but something Unless we are in Jesus hands we cannot possibly reach the hungry souls of the world He wants us just as we are, right where we are to turn to Him and give everything we are. We as Christians do not grasp that the principles of discipleship are lifelong commitments. We fail to understand that discipleship, obeying Christ constantly, is a never ending journey. There are two key ingredients to becoming, and making effective disciples for Christ. We must be in His word daily, and bring our sins out of the darkness of secrecy. Discipleship is not something that we do, and finish; it is a climb with God one step at a

A Rhetorical Analysis Of The Mercedes Benz Soul Commercial

I am not a car person myself, but I found the Mercedes Benz Soul commercial quite humorous. In the commercial, an average guy might make a deal with the devil. The devil is William Dafoe. It is implied that the average guy will get the car if he signs his life away. The average guy will be able to drive fast, be famous and gets date with the women as framed in the commercial. Kate Upton makes an appearance as one of the women, as if making the car more desirable. The advertisement is blatantly being used to get people to go purchase cars. I would consider myself unbiased towards Mercedes. I am not uppity or that into cars. A car is merely a car to me. It is used to get me to point b from point a. I am not into looking flashy or getting attention. The car is made to seem like a great deal. The commercial wants the audience to think that it is affordable, and no one has to sign a deal with the devil to obtain the Mercedes Soul.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The car company wants the average male to think that this car will make his life a whole lot better. The audience is neutral. Mercedes is trying to get people who have not made up their mind about buying a car to buy car. The car is not just for the wealthy, because part of the pitch is that the car is affordable for an average middle class person. The commercial is more targeted at males because the car is more masculine. The car is sporty. For example, the average guy is pretending to drive the car on a race track. This gives the illusion that it is a fast car which makes it more desirable. The audience may think twice about this car, when they go to purchase a new car, or recognize it from the commercial making them more drawn to the

Essay on The Dynamics of Faith

The Dynamics of Faith

The Dynamics of Faith is an in depth look at what faith is from a theological perspective. Tillich seems to be replying to all of the writers we have read thus far and placing their arguments within the context of faith. Nowhere is this more apparent than on page 24, in his discussion of community. He rightly acknowledges that faith is usually seen in its sociologic setting. He then proceeds to sort out the different claims, saying that community is necessary to see the manifestation of faith because we need the language to express it. He also states that we need community for the content of our faith. This is almost Durkheimian, except that Tillich does not seem to be saying that community is necessary... The theory he puts forth could incorporate anything from faith in God to nationalism, as he describes. Thus, the intent is more important than the name of the organization, whether it be classified as a religion or not. Although this may be seen as copping out, as some accused James of doing, Tillich gives such a detailed definition of faith that it is impossible to accuse him of taking the easy path. He does stray away from incorporating all religion when discussing mythology. He says that Christianity is superior to religions bound to a natural myth. This is clearly a very biased statement, and throughout the book it is obvious that Tillich is much more familiar with Christianity than other traditions. However, he is very quick to remind us that Christianity, too, is a myth. Although there are any popular perceptions of faith, Tillich goes beyond all of this, saying that the popular perceptions, even by Christian religious traditions, are misconceptions. We often talk about having faith that there is life on another planet or something. To Tillich, these things do not constitute faith, but belief. The difference is that faith is ultimate concern. Faith must include both a cognitive and emotional component. Thus, it is impossible to have faith in something without it being your ultimate concern. What is not completely clear from Tillich is whether all people have some ultimate concern. It is clear that to some people it
