The North s Technological Advances

The North s Technological Advances Ethan Walton 8th Grade History Mrs. Bearden May 26, 2017

Ethan D. Walton Mrs. Bearden 8th Grade History 15 May 2017 The North s Technological Advances

The Civil War was a time of one country divided among itself because of the freedoms of slaves. When Abe Lincoln was first elected that was the South s turning point but the attack on Fort Wagner was the beginning battle to a war between States. One result of the Civil War was that Congress put into action the 13th amendment, banning slavery. The North were fighting for the freedom of slaves while on the other hand the South opposed this and fought to keep slavery legal. The North had many things the South hadn t such as an abundance of factories,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Here, as well, the Confederate army was at a disadvantage: They lacked the technological and industrial ability to conduct such a large scale communication campaign (Civil War Technology 2). Though these types of innovations changed the way wars are fought they also changed daily life. Even more important were the technologies that did not specifically have to do with the war, like the railroad and the telegraph. Innovations like these did not just change the way people fought wars they also changed the way people lived (1). One other thing, the Union Army had established an entire government office dealing with the telegraph system and had trained many operators. In 1861, the Union Army established the U.S. Military Telegraph Corps, led by a young railroad man named Andrew Carnegie. The next year alone, the U.S.M.T.C. trained 1,200 operators, strung 4,000 miles of telegraph wire and sent more than a million messages to and from the battlefield (3). The telegraph was the way to communicate before the later invention of the telephone. Also, there was a telegraph service for people to communicate before the invention of the telephone around 1900 (Dorr 2). It is clear that, the telegraph really helped the North get an edge on the South. Another advancement was the factories that were creating weapons, ammunition, clothing and such helping the North outclass the South in terms of industry and achieve

Corruption In Barn Burning

A bond between two people can be a powerful yet delicate force, and more often than not, it can be abused. Throughout human history, young and innocent minds have been manipulated by higher powers in attempts to create a population unaware of the immoral activities carried out by those in charge. Many religious cults and fascist governments have used this to create followers who blindly accept their corrupt rules and policies. A simple relationship or bond could be used as a method of control. However, this control sometimes fails, and some see through the corruption at the trutt. Following that, is a fight for independence. In the case of Sarty Snopes, his independence was gained through the struggles he faced with his father, Abner. His forced loyalty to his father s crimes eventually pushes him to break away, but at the price of his father s life. The story Barn Burningfocuses on the struggles of the Snopes, a poor family forced to move after the patriarch, Abner burns down someone s barn. He tells his son Sarty about a special blood between them and says that he must stick to it. At the de Spain farm, where they move to, Abner does not adjust well, eventually going to his old ways and burning a rug. Forced with paying for the rug, Abner decides to burn down de Spain s barn. Sarty, who has been on his father s side, decides to call him out to de Spain, causing him to go kill Abner, leaving Sarty without his father and looking at a new start. Throughout the story,

Summary Of City Of Joy

In the decades after City of Joy was published, the world s focus on climate change and sustainable living increased greatly. People started to look to the future and realize the actual costs of a rapidly changing world. The World Bank report called, Turn Down the Heat reports on new research related to climate change and alayses the impacts and risk to developing countries. Lapierre s novel certainly does not tackle an issue like climate change explicitly, but he does show nature to have a large effect on people s lives, and several natural disasters in the City of Joy have only increased in frequency since the book was written. Most importantly, City of Joy displays the impacts and risks section of the World Bank report, as the effects of climate cut deep to exacerbate many of the development problems in Anand Nagar. Hasari Pal is forced out of farming due to the unmanageable climate. When the monsoon arrives, The sky is rendering the earth fruitful. This is rebirth, the triumph of the elements (CoJ, 14). However, for Hasari Pal and his village, the downpours never arrived. Lapierre details the quick destruction of lifestyle that is caused by the drought, as wells were guarded 24/7, fish floundering in the dried up creeks were divied up, and livestock was obliterated. Hasari reflects, There was a treasure in my field, but today someone else holds its key and the treasure is no longer mine (CoJ, 17). The World Bank report spends some time talking about the

The Tragedy of Being Born a Woman Essay

In the story The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, the role of the female characters Daisy, Jordan and Myrtle find themselves in conflict with society s expectations of them. However, they each negotiate the conflict and resolve it. By examining Daisy, Jordan and Myrtle s roles, one can contemplate how they went about resolving the issue. The beautiful and mesmerizing Daisy Buchanan is the poster child of sociability. She lives a particular lifestyle in the privileged, high class Louisville, which her husband Tom has provided for her. She attracts all sorts of men, including Jay Gatsby, with her classy nature and voice full of money . She is the object of Gatsby s desire, and represents an elite social class. Her voice is full of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... She was incurably dishonest. She wasn t able to endure being at a disadvantage and, given this unwillingness, I suppose she had begun dealing in subterfuges when she was very young in order to keep that cool, insolent smile turned to the world and yet satisfy the demands of her hard, jaunty body. Married to her husband George who owns a gas station, and lover of Tom Buchanan, Myrtle Wilson serves as a representative of the lower class. Through her affair with Tom she enters the world of the elite, and her personality change is remarkable. She conducts a secret life with Tom, where she exhibits all the power and dominance she finds lacking in her everyday life. She eventually suffers a tragic death at the hand of her lover s wife. In the story, Gatsby is a tragic hero, while Myrtle is portrayed as a ridiculous fool. Gatsby strives out of love, while Myrtle does it out of greed. Is Gatsby seen as a hero because he is a man, or is Myrtle portrayed as a fool simply because she had the tragedy of being born a woman? Myrtle and Gatsby however do have one thing in common; they re both trying to rise above their class. Like Gatsby, Myrtle isn t happy with the class she was born to. She insists she married beneath her, and she tries to talk about the lower orders as though she s not one of them. Myrtle and Gatsby have quite a bit in common; nonetheless they are completely different people. Throughout this story, as the same as reality, women face the conflict of meeting the

In search for the perfect man, could it be we tend to find the average man? Throughout history there has been many philosophers such as Adolphe Quetelet, Johann Herder, and Alexis Tocqueville, all of which worked on theories and done research on man in society. Although their work has had differences, there has been similarities that connect all three of these philosophers ideas together. As a brief background, Herder expressed the history of man throughout his work. This history of man portrayed survival tactics, emotional responses, human nature, and the consequences faced by man. Tocqueville s work consists of the Democracy in Americaand the ultimate goal of an Indefinite Perfectibility of Man, the idea of equality among all,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This allows us to comprehend how the gifts from nature were meant to be interpreted as well as how a man forms to society and matures throughout the years of life. We can also see similarities in the work of Quetelet and Tocqueville, in this quote by Herder. Tocqueville s work suggests an indefinite perfectibility of man, which could also be interpreted in Herder s work. If nature was created not only to satisfy man but also protect mankind from warfare, therefore it could be assumed that the perfectibility of man, has already been achieved since the beginning of time. Every man is born into nature, creating an equal opportunity for all, indirectly implying there s a natural tendency for equality among all men regardless of race. This is where controversy occurs between Herder s work and Tocqueville s, Herder believes that perfectibility of man has already occurred through nature s gift, but Tocqueville believes there s racism, inequality, and an abundance of power among government, thus preventing society from obtaining the ultimate goal of perfectibility of man. Although these two concepts have created controversy, the similarities among the two are relevant. As stated, nature was meant to create a perfect environment to sustain the needs of man, while maintaining conflicts and preventing warfare, yet man is educated by man and

Literary Analysis Of Hillbilly Elegy

Literary Analysis The memoir Hillbilly Elegy, written by J.D. Vance, is the remarkable story of a young man s challenges of growing up in poverty. The book focuses on the difficulties that come along with living in Appalachia, and the family issues that go on as well. Living in poverty introduced Vance to a world filled with toxicity and violence. This unhealthy environment caused Vance to develop a conflict within himself, making him struggle with his self identity. In Hillbilly Elegy, Vance uses Conflict to empathize the toxicity that surrounded his family. The introduction of toxicity in Vance s life can be traced back to the absence of his biological father. At a young age, Vance s father gave him up for adoption. This was shocking... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... She knew that at some point they d be gone...I had learned the same lesson (89). The conflict with the children and the men their mother brought home made a toxic environment. They were unable to create heathy relationships with the men due to the fear and assumption of their eventual departure. The conflict between Vance s mother and the men was also not healthy for the children, Vance writes, When I heard [his mom] screaming at [one of the men], or weeping on the floor after an especially intense argument...I felt guilty that she was going through this for my sake (89). Although, the issues within the household were not related to Vance, he still took on responsibility for his Mother s unhappiness. With the constant change of men in Vance s life, came additional siblings to his already complicated family tree. For a young child, the explanation of how many siblings he had was often confusing and frustrating to explain. Without the ability to quickly summarize his family ties, Vance became weary of the question and wanted to avoid it at all costs. Being unable to confidently have an answer to how many siblings he had, Vance was once again put into a toxic situation. The lack of stability and real relationships with the people who were technically family to Vance, left him feeling disconnected, Vance writes,

Makeup Controversy

Makeup has altered faces and sculptured society s standards of beauty, changing and evolving since its origin in ancient time. For years society, has set impossible beauty standards for women. Recently, we have had a hypocritical trend concerning Makeup shaming. Makeup shaming is when a girl wears makeup to hide the so called truth , like the imperfections and flaws that everyone deals with daily. There have been years of controversy on why girls wear makeup and in a recent video of a beauty guru on YouTube called Nikkie tutorials she commented that people are Makeup shaming or trolling girls for wearing too much makeup. Most of the beauty community on YouTube don t wear makeup because they are insecure or not confident but to them it s an art, a way to express themselves and they just absolutely love makeup. Makeup shamers shoot down others maybe because they are insecure of themselves and they go find other people to criticize. One side of the issue includes girls who see makeup as a way to express themselves. When putting on makeup there isn t just one reason on why girls wear it. Wearing makeup is a way to make themselves look prettier because they feel insecure but in all honesty statistics have shown that even when you re not wearing makeup you start to feel the confident if you were wearing makeup.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Makeup should be a way girls can express themselves and should be able to feel confident with the way they are with or without makeup. Makeup isn t just meant for hiding imperfections or changing the way we look. It is an art form that can empower us and transform us into pretty much anything we want. I agree with makeup guru Nikki for makeup being a way for girls to be able express themselves because it makes them feel more confident, it gives them a way to express themselves, creative outlet, and it s just a fun thing to

My Goal In My Life

I would have to say that my life task will be to be a problem solver. In the video Tom Kelley(Founder Ideo) Do What You Love the Venn diagram utilized by Jim Collins shows that with a good balance you can find your life task. Fourteen years ago, I used to work for Hewlett Packard and like the Venn diagram I was good at it, I was born to do and I got paid to do what I loved, code and solve problems. The environment was good to work, every Friday after work we used to gather outside the building to play dominoes. I would say if you asked myself where I saw me in five or ten years I would have answered that I would be working at Hewlett Packard. But that was not how it happened my division was the first one to go after the Compaqmerger. This is probably my starting point for my mastery journey.

I moved the family to Orlando, FL and started my own business. I used to put a lot of ours in to it and it was consuming a lot of time and it was not healthy for the kids or my marriage. It is not until that life took a good turn and I got the opportunity to work for Florida Virtual School. It is quite a turnaround since my Mother and Sisters are all educators and I didn t want to follow their footsteps that is why I studied Computer Science. Since I like to solve problems and find better ways to do the work after two years working for FLVS I started to play around with BI tools that is when I had the great Idea to pursue a degree in the subject matter.
