The Word Assimilation

The word assimilation has many different meanings. Its interpretations range from the digesting of nutrients to the transfer of similar sounds. However, when sifting through the various definitions of assimilation, there is one concept that always seems to stand out. No matter what the source is or how it s worded, there is almost always a reference to cultural groups. Whether it s the acceptance of a group or the alteration of it, the customs of contrasting cultures continuously come up. One such definition, according to the AudioEnglish.org dictionary, based on WordNet 2.1 and supported by Princeton University, states assimilation is the social process of absorbing one cultural group into harmony with another. Kristyn Hammond, a college composition professor in the Texas A M school system, describes in her eHow article Types of Assimilation, published on September 06, 2014, that as cultures mix and evolve, there is a transition of cultural traits, language acquisition and cultural identities from each group to the other. AudioEnlgish.org also relates terms such as Americanization and Westernization to assimilation, but unfortunately, these processes aren t always as harmonious as the definition suggests. Hammond states later in her article that, While assimilation can be a brutal and violent condition of forced integration, it can also be a peaceful combination of cultures. Unfortunately, in the American experience, there are more examples of oppressive enterprises

Military Business Continuity Planning

Business continuity planning is the process of ensuring that your organization can continue doing business even when its normal facilities or place of business is unavailable (Peltier, 2014). This statement should hold true for any business wishing to compete in today s market and apply to more than just natural disasters. Although natural disasters should remain an integral part of any continuity plan and recovery model, other man made disasters, such as computer viruses and physical security should be considered. The modern military, especially the Air Force, relies heavily on its troops assured access to the internet and other drives. For this very reason, although the military remains at the forefront of cyber security,

The German Army During the Interwar Period Essay

Possibly one of the most asked questions in military history is how was the German Army able to decisively defeat a numerically equivalent Allied Army in France during May and June 1940? One of the primary reasons for Germany s success was their innovation in armored warfare, particularly at the tactical and operational levels during the interwar period. The study of the German Army during a period of prolonged peace and constrained resources reveals that one of the most important qualities that a military should possess to innovate effectively is the ability to learn as an organization. A learning organization creates knowledge internally, externally acquires knowledge, and diffuses knowledge throughout the organization .... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Internal creation of knowledge and innovation also requires organizations to critically examine their operations, and replace practices that do not work. General Von Seeckt produced a generation of officers that were open to the idea of learning from their failures. Throughout the interwar period, German officers routinely conducted after action reviews as a tool for open discussion. The ability to identify failures served the German Army well after their first major combat operations since WWI in Poland. The senior leadership recognized that although their doctrine and tactics were sound, the campaign was not perfect. Their primary area of concern was that the maneuvering of unwieldy armored formations overwhelmed inexperienced leadership, thus preventing them from taking the initiative needed to leverage tactical advantages. During the seven months prior to the invasion of France, the senior leadership focused on developing leadership especially at battalion level and below and reorganizing armored formations to maximize their mobility and lethality . Learning organizations not only look internally, but they also look at external organizations to gain knowledge as a base for innovation . The German Army unable to possess tanks under the Versailles Treaty developed armored tactics effectively by extensively studying British armored development and exercises during the 1920s drawing out their own lessons learned. The Germans already with a firm grasp of

Analysis Of Bound For Canaan

Bound for Canaan: The Epic Story of the Underground Railroad, America s First Civil Rights Movement by Fergus M. Bordewich is an inspiring piece of literature that tackles on information about the underground railroad, and many other aspects we ve never known about at that point in time. The book is written by Fergus Bordewich, born on November 1, 1947 in New York City, New York.Fergus graduated from Columbia University and now lives with his wife Jean P. Bordewich in San Francisco as one of the best historians in the world. He is the author of many historical fictions such as The First Congress: How James Madison, George Washington, and a Group of Extraordinary Men Invented the Government, America s Great Debate: Henry Clay, Stephen A. Douglas, and the Compromise that Preserve the Union, and many more. As you can see, he s been changing perspectives on many historical topics for quite some time.

The main argument for Bound for Canaan was to respond to his earlier hardcover edition of Bound for Canaan: The Underground Railroad and the War for the Soul of America. It also explains that the underground railroad was more than Harriet Tubman, it s a system of channels and different networks full of people who have helped make the underground railroad successful, The author supports his argument by giving us new information that we would have never found out on our own. In the book the author starts with a brief dedication which states This book is dedicated to the countless thousands of men and women who fled the bounds of slavery, but were recaptured or died at the hands of their pursuers before they reached the safe embrace of the underground railroad. They are not forgotten .

Bound for Canaan has accomplished so much. It s an eye opener for anyone who reads it. It s the story that makes you want to get out and learn more about every different aspect in the book. If the author wanted me to get one idea from the book it would definitely be to be open about the history of the underground railroad. Seeing now that I ve read the book, there are things about it that isn t taught in regular schools. In schools they only teach you about what it is and that Harriet Tubman was the leader.

Jury Racism In The Justice System

According to the Ohio Research team, about 10,000 innocent people are wrongfully convicted (3). Wrongful convictions is a phrase that is used to describe someone who is jailed or punished for a crime that he or she did not commit. Our justice system today is criticized for having many defects and is one that is known to have a dark history of this. Recently, there has been a lot of controversy involving today s American justice system. It has even gotten to a point where numerous groups and organizations have been made public, such as the Black Lives Matter organization. So many people have been wrongfully punished for crimes they did not commit which is the reason people all across America today still protest for the innocent people who have... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Juries, typically a group of twelve citizens, are given the job to give a verdict on a court case. These people are meant to make a verdict on whether the defendant is guilty or innocent fairly, but a lot of times, this is not the case. Any team of juries or any jurycan have the possibility of being biased or unfair to a side. One example of jury racism is the case of Julius Ruffin. Julius Ruffin was an African American man who was charged with raping a young nurse (4). The nurse was attacked and raped in her apartment, but weeks later did the young nurse identify Ruffin as the attacker (4). Ruffin was a maintenance worker at the same medical school as the nurse (4). The nurse called the police and said he was the attacker after she saw him use an elevator in the school (4). In court, Ruffin s case seemed to stump juries. The case went through three juries and Ruffin was convicted on the third and final jury (4). However, the first two juries were mixed black and white juries (5). The last jury, a completely white jury, convicted Ruffin in just seven minutes and sentenced Ruffin to jail for life (5). Years later, DNA testing proved that Ruffin did not rape the woman and was exonerated (4). This case is a clear indication of jury bias. Two mixed black and white jurors were deadlocked in the case and could not come up with a verdict and yet an all white jury convicted Ruffin in just seven minutes. Sadly, many people of color deal with the threat of being at a disadvantage in court because of the color of their skin. Black men in particular have suffered racism in the justice court for many years. This further shows how innocent people, like Ruffin, have to still fear our racist justice system that can still find people like him

Agape Love Analysis

Paul states at the end of chapter 13, the greatest of these is love . Love is a common word used in modern day society through many types of expressions. It may describe the emotion towards an object of affection, or it may be used as an over dramatization of a liking one takes to a certain type of food per say. Its used to describe feelings toward a sexual relationship, or feelings towards family member, or friends. In the English language, there is an almost limitless amount of uses for that one little word. Yet, in the time of this letter loveas agape love was not a common terminology for what Paul was expressing. Therefore this paper plans to touch on what exactly it means when a Roman Jewish man, growing up and proclaiming the Gospel to a Hellenistic society in 57 AD claims that the greatest of these(faith, hope, love) ...is love .

Background of the Passage Paul sent the letter to the Roman city of Corinth, a city known for its immorality. Though they had many gods and goddesses, one of the main temples was dedicated to the goddess of love, Aphrodite, which in her temple had hundreds of temple prostitutes (pg. 5, Kistemaker). Along with this temple, there were many other temples and religious centers, even Jewish synagogues, which were dispersed throughout Corinth (pg. 3, Fee). It was a very diverse city filled with Jews, Greeks, slaves, free, prostitutes, ex soldiers, etc. The church in Corinth was started by Paul on his second missionary trip around 51 52 AD,
