The term sport tourism has become increasingly common in the tourism industry over the past five years; it is a lucrative segment of the tourism business. Lavalle (1997) estimated that sport tourism is a 845 billion industry. Sport oriented vacations, however, are really nothing new. After all, the Romans and Greeks traveled to and participated in numerous sports events. Today s sport tourismis merely a new adaptation on an old theme. The growth in the popularity of sport oriented leisure travel can be viewed daily. Cars laden with bicycles, skis, and canoes are a frequent sight on our highways. Olympic Games or FIFA World Cup are examples of sporting occasions that have become major tourist attractions. World Cup 94 in the United States and the Olympic Games in Atlanta were actively promoted as tourist attractions. Sports events on a somewhat smaller scale, such as the U.S. Open tennis tournament and the Super Bowl, are part of the spectator centered sector of sport tourism. Likewise, tourism associated with professional, college, and amateur sports is also part of tiffs form of sport tourism. Walt Disney World s Wide World of Sports venue can host 32 different sports including tennis, beach volleyball, and field hockey. Research on the impact s of hosting sport events is extensive. Ritchie (1984) discussed a number of positive and negative impacts physical, socio cultural, and economic felt by a community hosting major sport event s. A study by Barry University estimated that hosting the 1995 Super Bowl generated $204.5 million for the south Florida economy (Davis, 1995). However, Matzielli (1989) cautions that the impacts of hosting such events vary considerably and are often dependent on the indicators used to measure the effects. Nonetheless, for many communities in the United States, hosting sports events from the Super Bowl to the state youth football championships has become a

Artificial Intelligence Bias

The last hundred years has seen incredible advances in what technology can do, and now influence every part of our day. Many books and movies are built around a theme of the dangers of technology becoming more intelligent than humans and turning against us, such as 2001: A Space Odyssey, and the Terminator franchise. But will artificial intelligence ever be advanced enough to turn against us? Perhaps not as a robot; artificial intelligence is already being used to shape our actions, from what we buy to who we vote for. Artificial intelligence learns from the data it is provided and finds patterns and connections. Since this data is provided by us humans, it learns not only facts, but also picks up our biases and prejudices. A publication from UMBC Professor Cynthia Matuszek shows that... Review Of Sonata V Of John Cage s Sonatas And...

In this essay we will analyze two modern musical pieces. These pieces are namely Sonata V from John Cage s Sonatas and Interludes, and Caballito Negro by George Crumb. Composed in mid twentieth century, both pieces made a great success and they are worth examining in terms of the historical and subjective values affecting their achievements.

Sonata V of John Cage has binary form which consists of small ranged irregular phrases. The piece as a whole does not have a distinct melody. The first section has a smooth, repetitive rhythm, and percussive sound of prepared piano is ethereal. There is a regular pulse throughout the first section, and the pulse is delayed in some places with a couple of extra notes ( Sonata V, 0:12 0:16). The second part is more like the developmental part of the Classical sonata form. It is more dissonant and irregular, and there are pauses between some phrases. The piece as a whole differs from Western musicin almost every aspect. Some parts of the piece resemble African drumming ( Sonata V, 0:47 0:52). However, Cage was actually inspired from Javanese Gamelan, an orchestra of metallic percussion from Indonesia (Forney et. al., 374). As Alex Ross describes, Cage love[s] noise (366). This should be why he decided to alter his piano in a conceptually violent and unusual way for Sonatas and Interludes. Though, Cage s aim was not pure violence, as we are pleased by the soft sounds instead of being battered by some unholy racket (Ross, 366). I

Summary Of Robert Fischell Speech

Robert Fischell is an inventor of medical devices. His goal is to educate the audience with an informative speech about his three inventions that he believes can have a significant positive effect on millions of people. The first invention he describes consists of a device implanted into a patient to detect acute myocardial infection (AMI). The second inventionis a device that helps eliminate migraineheadaches. The third invention details the best way to treat epilepsy through a responsive electrical treatment. Robert Fischell delivered the speech in acceptance of his 2005 TEDaward in an official conference. His credibility cannot be doubted as he is the inventor of other well known medical devices such as, the rechargeable pacemaker, the insulin pump, and a pre cursor to GPS. The speaker s fascinating inventive capability, and determination to make the world a better place, adds to his credibility. The TED conference consisted of approximately a thousand people from different fields such as technology, design, business, science, entertainment, as well as the non profit world. The audience is not only limited to the live audience as millions of people can access the 26:46 minute speech through the internet and mass media. The speaker used a hook effectively to draw the audience into the speech. He starts by noting that the speech is aimed at discussing the invention that can have an impact on ten to a hundred million people. With such a remarkable statement, everyone would be interested to know the details of his inventions. At the same time, he mentions his previous inventions, stents, and insulin pumps for the diabetic, which he discussed in the prior film. This creates trust among the audience about the speaker s credibility. The speech s opening fully establishes the intention of the presentation.

Speech Content and Structure

The presentation was entirely focused on the primary objective of the speech and uses a problem and solution technique. Fischell s argument relates to how disease occurs, and how his inventions would contribute towards solving the problem. For instance, Fischell states that a migraine headache is an occurrence similar to an electrical impulse. His equipment would create a

Identity In The Bell Jar

The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath is a book about a young woman who is facing life the unexpected way. Esther is trying to place the puzzle pieces in order but it isn t quite working. Unfortunately, not many get the opportunity to be honored with a scholarship, Esther was one of the lucky ones who got a great opportunity. Marshmallow Experiment Dbq

The Marshmallow Experiment Does willpower matter? According to an experiment that took place in 1968, children who had more willpower generally ended up being more successful than those that were not able to control themselves. The marshmallow experiment is an experiment that involved four year olds where they were given the option to either one marshmallow immediately, or if they waited fifteen minutes they would receive two marshmallows. I believe that willpower plays a major part in being successful. When the experiment was revisited at the University of Rochester they found out, Behavioral cues play a big role in determining who holds out for that second marshmallow, and the results call into question how much self control actually has to do with it. (Source 2) There are some people that say that self control does not have to do much with the experiment, however, the children that took place in the experiment in 1968 were coming up with strategies to avoid the marshmallow. They would avoid thinking about the marshmallow and did just about anything to avoid thinking about the marshmallow. Some of the other children were not able to control themselves and rang the bell almost immediately. Self control is a major key to delayed gratification. In source 2 it says, If a child or adult lives in an environment where promises always get broken and outcomes are unreliable, the most rational response is to eat the marshmallow right in front of her and not wait for the promised marshmallows in the future. This can be true but self control and mindset come into play here as well. If you can control yourself to wait and have the mindset that the marshmallow that was promised will be delivered you will be able to wait. The children or people have never seen the professor that promised them this marshmallow and it depends on their mindset if they believe he/she will truly deliver the second

Quotes About Bob Dylan

Bob Dylan (Robert Allen Zimmerman, May 24, 1941) is an American singer, songwriter, musician, painter, and writer. He has been influential in popular music and culture for more than five decades. Dylan s lyrics join a range of political, social, philosophical, and literary influences . The quote above in meaning is that just by having democracy and giving the people the rights doesn t solve any issues. People still do bad things while having democracy and they blame it on the government. However, Maximilien would disagree with this quote because he believed that only democracy would fix the government and the country. Maximilien Robespierreis one of the best known leaders of the French Revolution. He was born in Arras, France and he went to school to become a lawyer and got his degree at law school. He also, got elected to the Estates General to help make laws for France and fought against the French Monarchy, the death penalty, slavery, for democratic reforms and the people to have more power. He helped gain a reputation for defending the poor society. he was elected president of the powerful Jacobin political faction. At first, he was against the killing of the people because he thought it wasn t right but as the Revolution grew more and more, he started to believe that it was out of hand to the point where nothing could be solved.

Robespierre states in his speech Virtue and Terror that If the strength of popular government in peacetime is virtue, the strength of popular government in revolution is both virtue and terror; terror without virtue is disastrous, virtue without terror is

Why Do Middle School Students Have Recess

Do Middle School Students Need Recess? Do middle school students need recess? I think that they do need recess because some kids need a break from learning. Another reason is kids and adults need some fresh air and exercise throughout the day. Somebody might disagree with this idea because the teacher dont want the kids to take up their whole class period. If the teacher don t want the kids to take up their class period we could possible do it on double or seventh period. The first reason why I think middle schoolstudents should have recess is some kids need a break from learning. First of all, kids get to mad and frustrated on one thing and need a break. Secondly, kids learn too much stuff and then they forget most of the stuff they learned.

Changes In The Jacksonian Era

The Jacksonian period is called the era of the common man. This is because during this period there were many economic developments that benefitted the common man. It also brought about changes in politics and the view from the public. During the Jacksonian period, many reforms were passed in order to help the common man. The Jacksonian period is deserving of its characterization as the era of the common man.

Economic developments were important to the period, such as in 1832 when Andrew Jackson vetoed the renewal of the Bank of the United States charter and the congress failed to overturn the veto. This led to Jackson successfully weakening the bank s power. Jackson then won the next election, despite attempts from supporters of the bank. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

This allowed for more people to vote and have a say in the government, and because the other states didn t want to lose population to the western states they also lowered their voting requirements, such as land owning and a poll tax. Despite the expansion of who could vote, it was still limited to only white men. This meant that Native Americans, slaves, free black people and women still couldn t vote. The way presidential candidates were selected also went through changes until in 1828 when in every state except for South Carolina electors were chosen by a popular vote. In 1838 the group that disagreed with Andrew Jackson and his politics officially became the Whigs while Jackson s supporters called themselves the Democrats thus creating the party system. This would benefit the voters by causing the parties to compete for votes, which would lead to the parties being more inclined to follow the will of the people. Proponents argued that this would benefit the voters by giving them power over how the country would be

Reflective Essay On The Glory Of God

As I said in this processing, we as individuals along with the church are coming full circle to the image and the bride of Christ. In order to complete the process and walk in victory we re going to have to get things right in the church. Let me say it again, if we are to walk in the manifested power of the Glory of God we have to be transparent, accountable and get things right or God is going to strip us naked in front of everybody. We must stop perpetrating, be real and keep it real on this journey. We must take authority over every unclean spirit and everything that s not like God. Rebuke those spirits! Rebuke the spirit of fear and intimidation in the name of Jesus! Renounce the spirit of passivity. Renounce the spirit of insecurity, for in your weakness God s strength is made perfect. Weakness is where the anointing is. We got to speak over ourselves, speak over our situation: Now God I decree in the name of Jesus that I m walking into health, body, soul and spirit. In the name of Jesus, I decree myself free. I make a decision. I ve decided to be free in the name of Jesus. Wash me Lord! Satan will not stop the advancement of the church. He will not stop the advancement of the people of God no matter what device he uses. One of his most diabolical devices is the tongue. The people of God need to learn to bridle their tongues. The same word that is spoken in your local church, you need to speak. You got to start conforming to the spirit of the house. God wants to do
