The Houston Equal Rights Ordinance

Introduction

HERO, the Houston Equal Rights Ordinance, according to the City of Houston Equal Rights Ordinance (2014), covers nondiscrimination against sex, race, color, ethnicity, national origin, age, familial status, marital status, military status, religion, disability, sexual orientation, genetic information, genderidentity, and pregnancy. The ordinance lists sections of protection within city services and employment, contracting with the city, public accommodations, private employment, and housing (Exh A, 2014). (Ord. No. 2014 530, § 2(Exh A), 5 28 2014)

Although the ordinance protects several classes of people within five separate categories, the ordinance became the policy in favor of men in women s bathrooms. With a lot of attention on transgender people within the last year alone, the media was able to manipulate public perception by focusing on one aspect of the ordinance. Many Houstonians, still weary of the LGBTQ community and ill informed, were fully against the ordinance, claiming to defend their women and children against predators. Voters believed the ordinance created an open door for sex crime to increase in the city. Consequently, the ordinance failed to pass with a 60% opposing vote. The ordinance for equality should have passed, however, Houstonians focused only on their false perceptions and myths of sexual predators, such as strangers and queers.

HERO initial policy Openly gay mayor Annise Parker introduced the ordinance April 2014. Because the

Arrest Vs Mandatory Arrest

In the struggle and determination to end intimate partner violence, laws were made to provide a sense of security in the homes of these domestic violence victims. These laws created an impression that this violence can and will be stopped by law enforcement individuals. That is to say that law enforcement is given the power to make warrantless arrests to ensure that the victim is safe and away from the perpetrator. Many states have different discretionary mandates that specifically advise these officers to be decisive in the situations that they will face in the future. In some states, the mandatory arrest is up to the officer s own judgement, while in other states they have the more assertive and hard hitting approach to end the violence.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the view of domestic violence, men are primarily the attackers and women the victims, but when the victim strikes back in self defense and the police arrive on scene, the victims are now being arrested for the violence. It is stated that the result of the victims becoming arrested more often is because they are now becoming assertive of themselves. The impact of these victim incarcerations are leaving a negative effect on their views of law enforcement. Due to the fact that police officers are arresting the victims instead of the perpetrators, they now are faced with the problem that they cannot trust the criminal justice system. Another factor that is taken into account is that because of the arrest the victim is now encountered the humiliation and possibly the loss of their jobs or education. The most important factor in these arrests is that the victim is now wary of calling for help in future situations because of their loss of faith in law

Project Plan for Whitbread Sailboat Race Essay

Running head: PROJECT PLAN FOR WHITBREAD WORLD SAILBOAT RACE Project Plan for Whitbread World Sailboat Race Joel Johnson University of Phoenix Project Plan for Whitbread World Sailboat Race The Whitbread World Sailboat Race, now called the Volvo Ocean Race requires teams to work together to sail around the world taking on many known and unknown challenges. The race itself is only one part of the challenge. The ability for the race team leaders to deliver a professionally designed boat and well trained crew on time and on budget is the first project that needs successful completion. Bjorn Ericksen has been selected to manage the boat design and crew training process for the company sponsor. He has a hard deadline to deliver the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This project is sensitive in that it has a critical path that needs to be held to in order for sequential events to happen in the appropriate time frame. Any delays will ripple throughout the project manifesting in a rush at the finish of the project to train a team of sailors on a brand new vessel. This situation must be avoided at all costs, while staying within the budget. Bjorn Ericksen has come up with the appropriate project plan to reduce the timeframe and have a well train team of sailors ready to compete on a finely tuned sailing vessel. Plan to Reduce Project Duration The project has two parallel paths that will cross at a critical future point. Portions of each path have the ability to be compressed, each having an associated cost increase and risk factor. Bjorn decided the best plan has the boat construction accelerated while the crew selection and training can proceed according to planned time and cost estimates. The plan has the boat and crew ready for transport in 41 weeks at a cost of $3.17M. This timeline gives minimal protection against cost overruns and any minor time delays, however, some free slack is available to the team. Karin Knutsen will be heading up the boat design and construction portion of the project and as such is responsible for getting the best designed and built boat to the sailors in 28 weeks.

Minimum Wage Research Paper

real versus nominal value of wages from 1930 2009. The income value is measured using the relative average income that would be used to buy a commodity based on the GDP per capita. Labor Value is measured using the relative wage a worker would use to buy the commodity. This measure uses one of the wage indexes from MeasuringWorth.com. From the above table, it explains that one time minimum wage spike in 1968 does not reflect wagedeclines in 2017. Rather, the real value of money today has more purchasing power than it did decades ago. If raising the nominal value of minimum wage is effective in helping the poor, why should we confine the minimum wage to only $15? Wouldn t that a $25, a $35, or a $40 be more sound to raise the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It is evident that labor unions are the main driver of minimum wage growth. Their real purpose is to increase their monopolistic power and collective bargaining by increasing insiders wages to the detriment of outsiders, who consequently face fewer job opportunities. Furthermore, the scale effects of minimum wage are discussed in this paper. Since wages are the main component of marginal cost, and prices are a markup over marginal cost, higher wage inflation leads to higher price inflation. Although labor and capital are not perfect substitutes, large scale automation is anticipated if labor cost keeps rising above market equilibrium. Besides, research has shown that one of the main causes of income inequality is the mandate of minimum wage, resulting many discouraged workers who decided to leave the labor force permanently and subsisted on welfare due to their obsolete skills. Lastly, one solution to the efficiency of minimum wage could be raising local minimum wage based on regional CPIs instead of raising minimum wage in all cities in the U.S at the same time. Another solution could be in making minimum wage hikes in line with marginal productivity of labor. When output rises due to higher productivity, a higher wage will be

Treat Injuries For Female Athletes Essay

Another way to help treat injuries for female athletes is to use a foam roller to help alleviate the pain that accompanies the injury. There are also ways to stretch out by rolling on a foam roller and this will help keep your fascia smooth and healthy (Carlson). If the females take the time to roll out their muscles on a foam roller they will prevent future injuriesby relaxing their muscles. When the athlete is able to relax and stretch out the muscles, this helps the muscles to be more flexible which will allow the athletes to do riskier movements in their sport. The foam roller is not the only object that can loosen the athlete s muscles but grabbing a muscle roller stick or massage stick can bring about the same results. These... The coaches should take action by helping their athletes in teaching them stretches and allot the players enough time to execute these stretches before and after their workouts or practice. The trainer at Ashley High School says, [Female Athletes need to] educate themselves if they are at a higher risk for injury... (Thomas). If the female athletes realize that their bodies are more prone to injuries, they should research and figure out what can help their body. These athletes put their body through rigorous workouts all the time and so there are many opportunities for injury. Learning from their previous injuries should help them in figuring out how to prevent future recurrences. Since the media does not emphasize the severity of female athlete injuries when the player experiences them, the athlete needs to learn post treatments to help speed up the recovery time. Learning treatments for the injuries that a female athlete incurs may also help prevent any future injuries. Thomas says, ...plyometric exercises, proprioception, agility, overall biomechanics corrective exercises. (Thomas). When a female is injured while playing a sport to recover from the injury they should go through rigorous exercises to recover properly from the injury and to prevent any further injuries. The coaches that coach the female athletes should be informed of how to help the athlete recover from the injury and learn ways to

Rural Banking

The bank extends its loan facility to create employment and achieve economic growth in rural Bangladesh. It provides loan to farmers, fish and shrimp cultivators, and micro entrepreneurs. They may have loan for agro equipment and other expenditure related to production. All the efforts are targeted to employment generation and self employment. Well, all these loans are at easy terms.

Almost 80% of our population lives in rural areas. So their economic empowerment is a must for real and sustainable growth of our economy. So this bank works simultaneously to create employment and to alleviate poverty. As the success of a micro credit program depends mainly on intensive supervision, the bank sometimes provides such credit in collaboration with other agencies. Collaborating GO or NGO provide supervisors.

Bohr s Impact On Chemistry

Scientists are vital to the current state of the world. They make discoveries that contribute to the world of science that provide a base of knowledge for other scientists to develop and continue research for years and years to come. Some of the most important discoveries have been found in the field of chemistry, a fundamental branch of sciencethat studies matter and all of its properties, composition, and activity along with organic and inorganic substances. Many scientists such as J.J. Thomson, Erwin Schrodinger, Arthur Holly Compton and Niels Bohr are crucial benefactors in chemistry. By the same token, a scientist by the name of Arthur Holly Compton also researched on photons and how they interacted with electrons in 1923. He introduced the idea that photons would strike electrons and cause wavelengths to change. Although Compton researched about light and figured out what the interaction effect was between electrons and photons, Bohr discovered how light was made. Without Bohr, knowledge about photons would be very

Discussion Of The Criticisms Of Social Learning Approach

Social learning theorists have been criticised for over emphasising environmental factors in determining behaviour while neglecting individual differences, they show little interest for example in innate differences that may cause one person to be characteristically quick tempered and another to be extremely passive. Social learning theorists see personality as having little stability but changing according to the situation which is contrary to most people s experiences, so far social learning theorists have failed to provide a concise idea of how the various learned behaviours are integrated to form the total personality.

It is with commitment that scientific methods are a strength of the social learning approach as its results are reliable and allow inreferences about cause and effect. However it does give rise to criticism that relies heavily ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Consequently, social learning theorycan explain a range of processes that behaviourism has difficulties with, especially behaviours that emerge without the person that produces them being directly conditioned. As such it has contributed significantly to our understanding of processes like aggression and gender development and has also formed the basis of a range of treatments for problems like phobias. Modelling based therapies are particularly effective with children, who may find behaviour therapies using direct conditioning hard to deal with.

Some criticisms of social learning theory arise from their commitment to the environment as the chief influence on behaviour. For example, there are several gender differences that appear to be universal, such as preferences for particular characteristics in a potential heterosexual partner (men prioritise youth and fertility, women prioritise status and resources) and differences in the gender thinking of boys and girls (boys tend to be more rigid) that social learning theory cannot account for. It may be that differences like these reflect genetic
