An Analysis of Dickinson’s I Felt a Funeral

An Analysis of Dickinson s I Felt a Funeral in My Brain

Emily Dickinson was a poet who used many different devices to develop her poetry, which made her style quite unique. A glance at one of her poems may lead one to believe that she was quite a simple poet, although a closer examination of her verse would uncover the complexity it contains.

Dickinson s poem I felt a Funeral, in my Brain , is a prime example of complicity embodied by simple style and language. In this piece, Dickinson chronicles psychic fall. The use of many different devices such as sound, repetition, and metaphors, all help to develop the theme of the poem.

Perhaps the best way for the reader to uncover ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The repetition presents the reader with a sense of both order and chaos at once, which in turn illustrates the subject s mental state.

In the second stanza of the poem the poet presents the reader with a funeral setting. The mourners are all seated, and a service begins. The poet describes this service as being quite intense ( like a Drum (that) Kept beating beating ). The intensity of the service causes the poet s mind to go numb. The numbness represents the death of her mind.

In the third stanza a box is introduced. It can be assumed that this box is a coffin. The box is being lifted into the ground and the Boots of Lead creaking across the poets soul symbolize the mourners walking on the fresh grave. The tolling of space mimics the church bell that is introduced in the following stanza.

Stanza four introduces the Bell as a metaphor for the heavens, and goes on to say that Being (is), but an Ear . The bell is representative of a church bell, and all the mourners (Beings) are listening to its ring.

The use of the word bell in the poem s context forms a vision of a slow ringing church bell, characteristic to a funeral. The next line, of the fourth stanza, pairs up the poet and silence as castaways. They are strangers in a foreign place, and are all alone. One could infer from the poem that here represents purgatory. This

The Dangers Of Jettomero

Jettomero is a giant robot who wants to do nothing more than protect humanity. In its favor is the fact that it is giant and indestructible, but unfortunately the fact that it is also incredibly clumsy does count against it somewhat. Despite the fact that Jettomero apologizes profusely every time it accidentally knocks over a few buildings or tramples some tanks with its giant feet, the very humans that it is trying to save tends to attack it in full force. Since Jettomero is indestructible this proves to be more than a nuisance than a danger, but it is rather disheartening when you get bombarded with bombs and missiles simply for trying to help. Initially Jettomero doesn t really have any idea what its true purpose is and where it came from, but fighting the various monsters it encounters does... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For a giant robot Jettomero is quite graceful when boosting around space, but his movement on the planets is intentionally very cumbersome. Imagine a small child wearing over sized boots while trying to walk through thick mud and you ll have an idea of just how tricky it is to maneuver Jettomero. We would have liked to see some type of penalty for destroying the cities as currently you can trash everything in sight and the only thing that happens is Jettomero apologizing. Even the constant attacks that Jettomero suffers has no negative impact on it, which means the game is ideal for players who simply want a casual experience with no frustration. However, players who enjoy a challenge might not appreciate the sedate pace as much. There are a couple of optional tasks that can be sought out be anyone looking for something other than the primary gameplay loop, but none of these are exactly taxing either. From flying through hoops while in space to stomping out fires, these distractions only rewards players with the occasional achievement and has no impact on the

Examples Of Anglo Saxon Values In Beowulf

In the Old English period every single narrative came with a set of values. This was called the Anglo Saxon Value System. Each value was considered like our modern life lesson in a way. Each value represented something in the story, epic, or poem. In the narratives of The Story of Caedmon of Whitby, Beowulf, and The Seafarer, almost all of them teach about the value of strength, courage, and loyalty. Beowulf is an epic tale that teaches us about the value of strength. This epic is the showing of Beowulf s strength throughout the entire poem. The poet tells us that there is no single man other than Beowulf who can complete the task of defeating the Danes greatest fear, Grendel. The author states, ... blunted every mortal man s blade (37). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Bede also apologizes for the imperfect translations because what Caedmon sang was truly beautiful. His exact words were, This is the general sense, but not the actual words that Caedmon sang in his dream; for verses, however, masterly, cannot be translated literally from language into another without losing much of their beauty and dignity (83 84). This poem is not simply a poem but it also illustrates the value of courage. This shy man did not want to take in any part of the feasts that took place in the abbey. The reason for this is because at that time, ... he could never compose any frivolous or profane verses... (82). He eventually gained the courage to speak aloud his verses; he can now compose by the grace of God. He receives them in a dream, where God said, Caedmon, sing me a song (83). Caedmon responded that he did not know how to sing and God said sing; Caedmon then asks what to sing. God s responses, Sing about the Creation of all things (83). After that dream it was time for Caedmon to be heard. When the time came for him speak, he gathered all his courage he received from God and spoke unto the people of the feast a beautiful verse about the creation story. This displays courage because being a shy person and suddenly speaking aloud to people can be extremely frightening. God gave Caedmon this power to create not only outstanding verses but to help him come out of his shell of

Hooded Americanism Essay

Hooded Americanism: The First Century of the Ku Klux Klan: 1865 to the Present by David Chalmers records the history of the Ku Klux Klan quite bluntly, all the way from its creation following the civil war, to the early 1960 s. The author starts the book quite strongly by discussing in detail many acts of violence and displays of hatred throughout the United States. He makes a point to show that the Klan rode robustly throughout all of the country, not just in the southern states. The first several chapters of the book focus on the Klan s creation in 1865. He goes on to discuss the attitude of many Americans following the United State s Civil War and how the war shaped a new nation. The bulk of the book is used to go through many of... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The lack of personal emotion from the author leads to this book being very dry. Although the sentences in the book were clear cut without any unnecessary adjectives or emphasis, they were very long and included technical words. Since this book is mainly a summary of dates and facts, the passive voice is utilized to avoid repetition of words and titles. Hooded Americanism was very well researched, and could be looked upon as more of a text book than and novel that one would read for entertainment. David Chalmers has written many books in the political science genre, but Hooded Americanism was the first book that he wrote that was meant to be a reference. Anyone that wants to travel into one of the darkest areas of our nation s history would enjoy reading this book. Readers that want the facts and truth behind the Klan, and are not satisfied with only seeing the negative image that the media has portrayed of the Klan, should read this book. The book was clearly written for an adult audience. Towards the end of the book, David Chalmers goes into detail when describing various acts of violence that the KKK performed. For example, in chapter forty five, the author describes floggings of African Americans, and burning of Jewish synagogues. Without these detailed accounts though, the author would have been unsuccessful in his purpose for writing. When reading, it became apparent that Chalmers

Why Should We Bother Analysis

A. 1. My children have always told me that I can sense and see things that most aren t able to. I love to go on walks and during those walks I see, hear, and smell natures wonders; flowers, clouds, butterflies, birds. I enjoy seeing and hearing them all. I don t go through life with my blinders up very often. I try to take in everything that is there to see; this is where I feel closest to nature. 2. Why bother? We have been hearing of the dire warnings regarding climate change for decades, starting with Al Gore. We all know changes must be made, but how can we ensure that everyone will participate in those changes. How can I as one person make enough adjustments in my lifestyle to make a difference? And if no one else does, why bother? We have to bother. One at a time, when we add it all up, we can make a difference. We have tried getting legislation passed to bring about changes, but without everyone making an effort, that fell short.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Descriptive Vacation In The Rainforest

It s summer vacation and I m riding the gondola with my family up to the top of a rainforest in Costa Rica. My brother and I are preparing ourselves mentally, to zip line across the monstrous tree tops of the rainforest. I was feeling more and more frightened every time someone in gondola mentioned how high we were. Going up to the top, I felt the atmosphere change and suddenly the air was really moist, and I was almost immediately covered in sweat. We were at the top of the rainforest, overlooking all the brightly colored trees, Lake Arenal(the biggest lake in Costa Rica) at the bottom, and the clear bright blue sky. As we walked out the door to get off the gondola, you could instantly hear the frightened screams of the people who just got launched down the zip line. Even though my mom was not zip lining, she was the most uncomfortable and nervous out of us all, because she was scared to watch my brother and I zip line. As we were putting our helmets and harnesses on, you could smell the sweat of the previous owner of the used gear. The harness was extremely heavy almost to the point where you could barely walk. The gloves were very rough and smelled absolutely terrible. The helmet was very large and almost too tight for my head. Waiting in line, two kids behind me thought it was funny to bump helmets constantly, and the noise bothered my brother a lot, but not me, because all I could think about was how I was going to survive this. Waiting for my turn to jump, only made me more nervous. I was shaking heavily, gripping the railing really tight, and swatting away all the enormous and exotic bugs that I had never seen before. Suddenly it was my turn to get strapped in. I could feel every inch of my body shaking, and I could even sense the fear coming from my mom, who was watching from the ledge above. I could tell my dad and my other siblings weren t scared for my brother and I, because all they were doing was taking pictures of us and admiring the view. The employee who was strapping me in was giving me tips like, keep you legs up , and brake as you come into the landing port , but I couldn t hear a thing he was saying because I was so nervous and focused on getting it over with. As I was

Differences Between College And College

College is our first real step into adulthood. If you re like me, and most college students; you move out of your home and into a dorm which means you must fend for yourself. College really is a whole new world waiting to be explored. However, it can also be frustrating to adjust. So, in this essay as a first year college studentmyself, I will be guiding you by providing examples of differences between high schooland college, priorities and how to schedule your time. I think the biggest difference between college and high school is freedom. Everyone seems to love it, we finally begin to feel like we are in control of our future. In high school, most activities are monitored; while in college we don t have adults monitoring us 24/7, but with that newly found freedom comes responsibilities. And I think those responsibilities can be the hardest adjustment for some. Sometimes when we gain so much freedom we don t know how to act. Some students only think about having fun and they put aside the important things like taking care of themselves; when they fall off their normal routine. In college, it is easy for unhealthy habits to form. Some of these habits are staying up late, eating unhealthy, and slacking on chores like laundry. When you start to take on these habits stress can build up, that s why it is important to try and remain grounded. If you want to stay up late and have fun save it for the weekend. Trust me it will makes your life so much easier. Another difference

Review Of Annie Paul s Essay

1.Write about what the teacher likes. Look around your teachers room, what do you see? If there s football posters, dance trophies, or funny pictures or sayings it s a good chance that writing about those things will help you fake the essay and get away with it. Annie Paul, a famous journalist, says This will give your reader a sense of being energized and invigorated, captivated and enthralled. The more they like your essaythe easier they will be on you when grading the paper.

2.Don t use big vocabulary. Using bigger words may seem like they d make you look more educated but in all reality they just make you look stupid. It s good to emphasize what you know when you re trying to sound intelligent, but the way you talk about it matters.

Essay on Annie Dillard Living Like Weasels Summary and...

Living like Weasels

In the essay Living like Weasels , the author Annie Dillard wrote about her first encounter after she saw a real wild weasel for the first time in her life. The story began when she went to Hollins Pond which is a remarkable place of shallowness where she likes to go at sunset and sit on a tree trunk. Dillard traced the motorcycle path in all gratitude through the wild rose up in to high grassy fields and while she was looking down, a weasel caught her eyes attention; he was looking up at her too. The weasel was ten inches long, thin as a curve, a muscled ribbon, brown as fruitwood, soft furred, and alert. His face was fierce, small, pointed as Lizard s, and with two black eyes. They exchanged the glances as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Then she began to talk about her own story with weasels, by describing the scene and the place of her story; she explained why did she go to Hollins Pond? And what she used to do in that place? To give an image to the audience about the place where she saw the weasels for the first time in her life. After that Dillard started to put the events of her story together, like how was her first meeting with the weasel and what she experienced from that meeting. The author also has a distinctive way of description. She described the weasels in such a creative way. She could give a sample picture about the weasel without drawing it. Also, Dillard used an emotional style when she wrote about her first incident with the weasel and how they exchanged the glances as lovers. Finally, I believe that Annie Dillardis a very skilled author. At the beginning she attracted the audience attention by a question, then she started to communicate with the audience brains, sometime she made the audience used their imagination to think about how do weasels look like and sometimes she pulled their emotions, and at the end she made the audience thought about their lives and compare it with weasel s

You learnt everything, Ignatius, except how to be a human being (375). Chained to a dominant character who is so vast and yet so embryonic that he is not only protagonist but also, in many ways, his own antagonist, The Confederacy of Dunces, by John Kennedy Toole, has been called a broad satirical view of the modern world (Holditch Introduction The Neon Bible xi). Since this short definition fails to explain that the view presented is primarily that of the slug like character of Ignatius Jacques Reilly, it also fails to take into account that one s view from the womb is, of necessity, somewhat limited. Although Ignatius is thirty years old and has a Master s ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Ignatius father has been dead for twenty one years, and Ignatius was only nine years old when his father died. That Ignatius began back pedaling to the safety of his mother s care at this time is evidenced when he digs through his closet for the overnight bag that his mother had bought for him for a disasterous one day stay at a boy s camp when he was eleven years old (400). Within a very few years, Ignatius suffers the further trauma of the loss of his dog, Rex, . . . probably the only thing that . . . [he] had ever really had in his life (378). When Ignatius turned to the church in his grief, the priest refused to say something over the dog (371), so Ignatius devised his own funeral service for his beloved pet and rejected a church and its doctrines which had failed to honor either his grief or the one thing that he had truly loved.

Bereft now of workable religious moorings, Ignatius began to both cling more tightly to, and yet reject, his mother who was so concerned about what the neighbors would think about his personal burial service for Rex that she, too, failed to understand the needs of her grief stricken son. Even during the burial service for Rex, she was screaming out the front door for him to throw the dog in the garbage can and get in the house (371). Although Irene Reilly, Ignatius mother, is quite

The Pros And Cons Of Christianity

In early first and second century Christianity the church was being built with a good amount of gentile pagan people from throughout Rome. The conversion to Christianity was not very popular and there was a chance in early Christianity to be persecuted or even murdered just for the belief in Christianity. Even with this being known there was a draw of pagan converts to join and be a part of this movement known as Christianity. In this essay we will talk about a few things that may have been part of the draw of pagans to Christianity, and give an example of why some pagans may have found Christianity distasteful. One of the beginning principle features of Christianity which I believe made it acceptable to different peoples of different pagan religions was the open acceptance of all people, Jews and Gentiles. The concept of all are welcome was not a common belief in most pagan religions of that day. Paul, an apostle of Jesus wrote in a letter to the Romans That I should be the minister of Jesus Christ to the Gentiles, ministering the gospel of God, that the offering up to the Gentiles might be acceptable, being sanctified by the Holy Ghost. [Romans 15:16] There is no difference between the Jews and the Greek: For the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call on Him. For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord will be saved. [Romans 10:12 13] These concepts and principles were passed on to the early churches throughout the Mediterranean area by Paul. There
