African American Stereotypes in the Film Industry

African Americans have long endured demeaning and misrepresentative images within the film industry and American society as a whole. In the early 20th century, an abundance of films depicted an idealized vision of life in the south, in which blacks were happily subservient to their role as the property of their white masters. The roles of black characters were also portrayed by white actors in blackface. Blackface was a form of theatrical makeup used to represent an image of a black person and was employed as a means to portray negative images of African Americans and to showcase them in an inferior light. Fortunately, the use of blackface dwindled as it was considered extremely offensive and derogatory, although the practice still remains in use today though very limited due to the rightful stigma surrounding it. However, the negative portrayals of African Americans in filmdid not end there and continued for a long time after. African Americans were still confined to roles which often portrayed blacks as incompetent, child like, hyper sexualized, and criminal. Even the more positive roles offered to African Americans provided limited options and reinforced the belief that the proper social position for African Americans was that of a servant who was devoted to his or her white masters and to upholding that particular social order. These roles were often as loyal servants, mammies, and butlers some even found great success and prominence in these roles, most notably

Population Growth And Its Effects

INTRO: Population Growth is an issue that exists in today s world that needs to be confronted before it becomes out of hand. The population itself has reached overwhelming numbers making it a problem that could turn to be dangerous. The amount of humans that the earth can support or the carrying capacity is slowly rising but at a much slower rate than the population growthrate. The increasing growth rate has its negative effects environmentally, agriculturally, socially, and economically and also has its positive effects nationally, and economically. The government is brainstorming and trying to come up with ways to decrease the growth rate or at least decrease its negative effects and also creating agencies take handle and regulate populationgrowth.

POPULATION: It is predicted that in about 1000 B.C. the population was about 265 million people. The world population continues to grow greatly. Between 1850 and 1950, the overall population doubled from 1.265 to 2.516 billion people. Between 1000 B.C. and 1850 the population grew on average a little less than 1.5 million people per year.(Our World In Data). As of 2015 the human population is over 7.3 billion people. According to the United Nations, the human population will be over 9 billion by 2050. By 2100 they predict that the population will be between 9.6 and 12.3 billion. In terms of population history can be split into three different periods. The first period was a very long period of time where the rate of

The Effects Of Cultural Backgrounds On Interpersonal...

Different cultural backgrounds can have certain effects on the interpersonal communication between students; and how cultural diversity benefits them socially and academically. Students expand their knowledge about other cultures by interacting with other students of different backgrounds. In doing so, they are growing socially and academically. According to Sarwari (2014), students that cooperate or interact with students from other cultures gain interpersonal communication skills, which are necessary in the workplace. Through interaction they acquire new perspectives and a better academic life (Sarwai 2014, Ibrahim 2014, Aziz 2014). Along the same lines as mentioned by Ramburuth, Welch (2005), classroom diversity is an ideal source that teachers can target to assist students in building their cross cultural competence (Ramburuth 2005, Welch 2005). Both, Sarwari and Ramburuth, portray how students can benefit from having different cultures within a classroom because it can give them the upper hand in a workplace environment or a social event due to the experience they get when interacting with individuals from other nationalities. Furthermore, stated by Taras, Rowney (2007), students bring with them a variety of backgrounds and types of knowledge which helps them come up with different solutions on how to approach a problem (Taras 2007, Rowney 2007). On the other hand, Ramburuth, Welch (2005) established that through multicultural group work students are

The Fat Girl By Andre Dubus

There are many components involved when analyzing a short story such as, main characters, point of view, plot, theme, and setting. Sometimes the answer is in black and white and other times it takes critical thinking to come up with a response. Some short stories have an important real life lesson while others are simply easy to relate to. Symbolism also plays a role in short stories by giving an event, object, or words being said a deeper meaning than the surface that brings importance to the story. The Fat Girl by Andre Dubus, The Red Convertible by Louise Erdrich, and An Ounce of Cure by Alice Munro are stories that contain most of the components of analyzing short stories. The short storyThe Fat Girl by Andre Dubus teaches readers about a real life struggle that is commonly faced by others. The main character of the story is Louise, a young teenage girl who deals with the issues of being overweight. Her mother worries about her weight and tries to control it by feeding her on a diet. While Louise is around others she tries to eat salads and healthy food so it does not appear as if she has a problem. When no one is watching, Louise binge eats and sneaks sandwiches, candy, and other unhealthy snacks that her mother would not approve of. One of the main struggles she faces from being overweight is the fact that no boys are interested in her. She starts going to an all girl college and befriends her roommate, Carrie. Louise and Carrie help get Louise on the right

This thesis sets out to examine the accounting, accountability and governance practices of the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (hereafter, NCDMB) and the International Oil and Gas Companies (hereafter, IOCs) in the implementation of, and compliance with, local content sustainability rules in petroleumcontracts in Nigeria. The aim is to apply an accountability based conceptual framework of accounting to address three major accountability issues within the context of the broader natural resource governance practices. Firstly, to critically establish, within the context of the Nigerian oil and gas industry, the relationship between local content and the three tenets of sustainability(social, economic and environmental), the issue that has received relatively little attention from scholars. Secondly, to evaluate the extent of the NCDMB s accountability by assessing its ability to enforce compliance with the local content sustainability rules as provided by the law. Finally, to investigate the extent of accountability of the IOCs operating in Nigeria by their ability to comply with and align between the mandatory and the voluntary local content reporting practices in their attempt to support sustainability through oil and gas contracts.

Historically, the Nigerian oil and gas sector like that of many other developing countries, has been dominated by the powerful IOCs resulting into a massive outflow of resources for the payment of training and procurement

Foucault s Power And Power

Foucault s Power (Intro) Power, what is power? Is it a thing, something that can be controlled by a person or group? Or is it an omnipresent force with no clear distinction of what it is and what it is not? My views before being introduced to Foucault was: power is an attainable thing, but elusive. For example, it is said one has power, if one has enough money. Another example I commonly hear is that, the government (the State, the law, police) holds too much power. My final example is, in my opinion, power is usually viewed as a negative thing by ones that do not hold said power. Michel Foucault, a philosopher, challenged the traditional view of power by analyzing power in a series of studies of different forms of power, such as from his books: Madness and Civilization, Discipline and Punish, and The Order of Things to name a few. What Foucault found through his critical observations was that the concept of power in the traditional views were too narrow and specific; not a singularity composed of only negative aspects but also a dualism that leans much heavier on the side of positivity than vice versa and an omnipresent force (or rather relationships) that may be used through various techniques but not owned at all.

DEFINITION OF FOUCAULT S POWER

1.1A Passage to India and the Relations of Power Since freedom is our natural state, we are not only in possession of it but have the urge to defend it Étienne De La Boétie Take up the White Man s burden Ye dare not stoop to less Nor call too loud on Freedom To cloke your weariness; By all ye cry or whisper, By all ye leave or do, The silent, sullen peoples Shall weigh your gods and you. Rudyard Kipling s The White Man s Burden The issue of Self displacement of the British colonial characters in the colonised Indian peripheries reveals the nature of the power relations in dominating the Other (the Indians). Based on the Oriental discourse, this section highlights the struggle of the subjugated inferior Other in approving its identity and diminishing the British stereotypical inferior images and apathy in

Bridget Jones

After twelve years of wait, the third instalment of the Bridget Jones (2001 2004) film series has been finally released.

When Working Title Films announced its intention of making another film back in 2009, several problems arrived with such announcement. In fact, the director of Bridesmaids and most recently Ghostbusters: Answer the Call, was reportedly going to be the director of the film. However, creative differences arise with Working Title and he exited the project. Production was slanted to begin in January of 2012, nonetheless, the screenplay was not good enough, according to the actors and it drew creative differences. Despite originally having the three main actors from the first two previous films signed up to return (Renée ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Nonetheless, all that can be said is that it is much better than its predecessor, Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason (2004). The main plot is contrived so that nor Jones or the two possible fathers learn about who is the actual father of the baby boy. One of the few good aspects to say about this contrived arrangement, is that the audience gets to enjoy more of Thompson, who aside from collaborating on writing the screenplay, she has a supporting role in it as Dra. Rawling, Jones s gynecologist; carrying some of the best laughs out of this

Knee Arthroplasty Essay

Background: Previous studies demonstrated that an abrupt change in conformity occurs during flexion of knee joint after total knee arthroplasty using the multi radius femoral design implant. An abrupt change in conformity was shown to lead to paradoxical anterior sliding and anteroposterior movement. For this reason, a gradually reducing radius femoral design was introduced. Recent studies showed that the gradually reducing radius design helped to attenuate paradoxical anterior sliding and provide better contact area without point loading or edge loading.

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact of MR versus GR knee design on the kinematics and kinetics of the knee during level ground walking one year after total knee arthroplasty. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Exclusion criteria were more than fifteen degree of varus deformity, more than twenty degree of flexion contracture and muscle weakness from neuromuscular disease including Parkinsonism or cerebral lesion. The groups consisted of twelve patients (twenty knees) who had total knee arthroplasty (TKA) with a representative MR designed implant (B Braun Aesculap Vega® Knee System) and thirteen patients (seventeen knees) who had TKA with a representative GR designed implant (Depuy Attune® Knee System)

Gait analysis data were collected before the operation and one year after TKA using a three dimensional motion analysis system (Oxford Met¬rics Inc., Oxford, UK), which consisted of eight VICON MX T20 infra red cameras and two force plates (AMTI, Water town, MA, USA).

The kinematic and kinetic parameters of knee varus angle, first peak knee adduction moment, sagittal plane knee excursion during mid stance and extensor moment at first peak knee flexion were evaluated during ground level walking, as well as the spatiotemporal gait outcomes of walking speed, stride length, cadence, step length, the percentage of stance

Plastics Have Hazardous Influence on Human Health

Plastics have hazardous influences on human health. It takes huge amounts of chemicals and fossil energizes to produce plastics. The type of plastics that we frequently use, contains a chemical called Bisphenol A known as BPA and other types of chemicals (Ellsbury, 2012). BPA can interferes with human body and modifies hormones, which has been proven to be dangerous to human health. In addition, various types of serious health problems have been strongly related to BPA (Lights, 2012). For instance, certain types of cancer, impaired immune function, early onset of puberty, obesity, diabetes, and hyperactivity (Adverse Health Effects of Plastics, n.d.). Research has shown that BPA enters human body through exposure to plastics, such as plastic bottles. Moreover, risks of these bottles increase even more if they expose to high temperatures, because the plastic will secrete its harmful chemicals into drinks (Lights, 2012). Plastics harm animals and consequence the death of them. Thousands of wild animals and sea animals are dying because of the plastic pollutant. In addition, once the animals swallow the plastic, it will not pass by the animals gut so it stucks, and that leads to a slow and excruciating death. Moreover, as plastics need more than lifetime to decompose, after the animal dies and decays, the plastic will be freed back again to the environment to keep killing other animals (Ark, n.d.). In the marine environment, plastic bags are the most frequently mistaken
