Health Disparity Among Chinese Americans

While people of Chinese descent appear to be less likely to suffer from conditions such as obesity and high blood pressure, they actually more likely to experience the degenerative diseases associated with these conditions. Before adjustment, Chinese Americans are shown to experience hypertension at a lower rate than Whites. However once adjusted for age, BMI, prevalence of diabetes, and smoking , East Asians showed 30% increased likelihood for hypertensionand 20% increased incidence of stroke compared to Whites (Sucher, 2017). According to a study by Dr. Tsai and Associates (2013) not only are Chinese people more likely to suffer from a stroke than Whites, they are also at between 10% 23% more likely than their close ethnic neighbor Taiwan.... The typical Chinese diet one that is high in sodium, especially among those living in more urban areas (Zhang et. al., 2013). Another health disparity among Chinese people, is the heavy reliance on traditional Chinese medicine. While resorting to traditional methods may have therapeutic effects on a variety of diseases, hypertension and therefore stroke unfortunately, do not strongly benefit from such methods (Wang Xiong,

Client Accused Of Dishonesty And Coming At Work Drunk

TO: Lawyer FROM: Laura Kiff DATE: November 16, 2016 FILE NO: 12345 6 RE: Client accused of dishonesty and coming to work drunk with little evidence ¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬ FACTS Our Client (Bilbo Baggins) worked for Orc Industries Corporation in Shire, Saskatchewan from December 25, 2006 to May 2007. During that time, our Client was hired to assist with the construction of a foundry where metal helmets would be made near Middle Earth, Ontario. Our Client left Shire on the assurance that Orc Industries Corporation was a viable business. By April 2007, our Client had lined up a general contractor and subcontractors, as well as design specialists, to build the new foundry. He had negotiated a collective agreement with a union that would supply the construction workers. He also negotiated another collective agreement with a union for the prospective employees who would work at the foundry. In May 2007, our Client was fired from Orc Industries Corporation on the accusations of dishonesty and coming to work drunk. There was no evidence of our Client coming to work drunk except for one empty bottle of Shire Whiskey found buried in a cabinet in his office. Our Client wishes to sue the Corporation for wrongful dismissal. ISSUE Will our Client be successful in suing for wrongful dismissal from the Corporation? DISCUSSION Protection from Wrongful Dismissal The first matter to address is who is entitled to protection from wrongful dismissal under Canadian

Nationalism

The concept of identity in a person s life often emanates from systemized sense of social representations and relations. Actors in the identity criterion have a sense of belonging characterized by a capacity of self reflection, entailing a process that constantly reaffirms one s status and differentiation from others. Identity produces consciousness of action and becomes formalized, with symbolic character and recognition found within specific limitations that are confined in a particular environment (Montserrat 10). Therefore, an individual s uniqueness directly creates a singular person s identity, which is an essential element in the development of national identity. It is the summation of those individuals identities that leads... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, the Middle Eastnationalism process was delayed in comparison with the European nationalism because the Arab worldpossessed unique aspects due to cultural, political and religious features that were associated with the colonial rule. Due to the aspect of their likeness in terms of language trait, Arab nationalist in the Middle East had a greater appeal for nationalism, despite the shifting political alliances. Despite having identical cultural orientations, the Arab nationalists had consciousness identity difficulties because they were under the Ottoman Empire for a long time. Arguably, in the first stages of Arab nationalists movements, European powers had sought to simulate the its development trends in Arab inhabited territories in order to facilitate dismantling of the Ottoman empire, which still continued to maintain its influence, even after its disintegration. Conversely, after the fall of Ottoman Empire, European countries tried to obstruct the promotion of Pan Arabism attempting to achieve unity, thus hindering them to develop the Pan Arabism nationalist trend (Gerber 263). However, the tribal and multi confessional diversity among the Arabs presented a challenge in achieving the unity goal. Moreover, the Arabs were also divided on religious aspects, thus disadvantaging

Conversion Of Reactants In A Saponification Reaction Lab...

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The main objective of this lab was to observe the effects of conversion of reactants in regard to temperature and time. The main reactants that were used are ethyl acetate and sodium hydroxide in a saponification reaction. The expected products were sodium acetate and ethanol. This reaction was conducted in a batch reactor in isothermic conditions and adiabatic conditions. The variables of interest in this reaction are Conductivity, temperature, time and concentration. The reactants used were 400 ml of 5.0% ethyl acetate and 400 ml of 2.3% Sodium hydroxide. This is equivalent to 9.2 grams of sodium hydroxide which has 0.23 moles. The measured conductivity of the sodium hydroxide initially before the start of the experiment was 112.2 mS/cm. The sodium hydroxide was mixed with the acetic ether and recordings of the conductivity were recorded down in intervals of 10 seconds to approximately 3 minutes.

In the experiment conducted, during the adiabatic reaction, a gradual temperature increase was noted over the period. The temperature increase was accompanied by a decrease in the conductivity measured. This is attributed to the increase in conversion percentage of the reactants. The increase in conversion percentage is due to the temperature increase which caused the reaction of the reactants as they form a new product and this consequently causes the temperature increase.

During the isothermic reaction, the temperature of the reaction was maintained at a

Essay on Plagiarism

According to the code of conduct at Clarion University plagiarism is the use of another s words without attribution and without enclosing the words in quotation marks. Plagiarism may also be defined as the act of taking the ideas or expressions of ideas of another person and representing them as one s own even if the original paper has been paraphrased or otherwise modified. ( Department of Nursing ) A lot of people, including myself have been confused of what plagiarism really means. Through my research I found that there are many different kinds of plagiarism and that a lot of people do it without even being aware they are. I have made the mistake of thinking that you could use another persons quote as long as it was cited,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Barnbaum) If there is a direct quote that would be useful then the quote needs taken directly with both quotes and citations, or when paraphrasing information it needs to be cited. If neither of these is done then it is plagiarizing. (C. Barnbaum) This form of plagiarism is what I think a lot of people do because they may agree with another person s thoughts and then want to make it in to their own so they will change a few words around to make it sound like their own words. The third type of plagiarism I have found is called Style Plagiarism. (C. Barnbaum) This plagiarism is said to be the most common trap that students fall into. (C. Barnbaum) Even if you aren t copying word for word but the same sentence or paragraph order is followed then this would be plagiarism because this is considered taking the authors reasoning style. (C. Barnbaum) Plagiarism does not always mean copying information but it can also be stealing the writing format as well. I think this can be considered a trap because people think it s not okay to steal information but taking the order, outline, flow, or style it is written in is different but really it is still a form of plagiarism. The next kind of plagiarism is called Metaphor plagiarism which is not always taking information word for word but using the same comparison or words to describe something. (C. Barnbaum) An original idea that someone else takes

Philippines Research Paper 30,000 years ago, it is believed that the Negritos have migrated to the Philippines from Borneo, Sumatra, and Malaya. Following that, the Malayans followed in successive waves. The Malayan culture has survived to this day among certain groups such as the Igorots. The later Malayan tribes that came had more highly developed cultures. In the 14th century, Arab traders introduced Islam to the islands and extended their influence. In 1521, the Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan led an expedition around the world, and one of his resting points was in the Philippines. One of the other Spanish expeditions was in 1542 by López de Villalobos from Mexico, who named the islands after Philip II. An expedition by Miguel... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In February, 1899, Aguinaldo led a new revolt, the Philippine American War. The U.S. captured of Aguinaldo on March 23, 1901 and in 1902, President Theodore Roosevelt proclaimed a full and complete pardon and amnesty to all people in the Philippine archipelago who had participated in the conflict, effectively ending the war. After World War II, Manuel Roxas became the first president of the Republic of the Philippines when independence was granted, as scheduled, on July 4, 1946 from the United States. As time went along, the Philippines had more presidents after Roxas, including Elpidio Quirino, Ramon Magsaysay, Carlos P. García, and Diosdado Macapagal, all who served 4 year terms. Then, the president after Macapagal, Ferdinand E. Marcos, served as president from 1965 to 1986. During this time, government corruption and civil disorder increased. After a series of fraud attempts in the 1986 elections, Marcos lost his support and Corazon Aquino became president. In 1992, Fidel Ramos succeeded Aquino and Joseph Marcelo Estrada was elected as president in 1998. In November, 2000, Estrada was impeached by the House of Representatives and in 2001 the Supreme Court stripped him of his power and Gloria Macapagal Arroyo was sworn in as Estrada s successor. On June 30, 2010, Benigno Aquino III became the president of the Philippines. Works Cited Philippine History. Pinas. N.p., n.d. How come we can go from Pennsylvania to New Jersey without paperwork but pay a different amount of state tax for purchases made in the different state? The answer is federalism, federalism is having or relating to a system of government in which several states form a unity but remain independent in internal affairs. These discissions were made in the Federalist Papers written by the Founders. The federalist papers were a collection of eighty five essays written to the newspapers in the 1780 s to encourage the remaining states who had yet to ratify the constitution. Alexander Hamilton, James Madison, and John Jay under a pseudonym wrote to persuade the remaining colonies that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The states have the power to change anything they want drinking age, tax, driving age, schooling but there are some things that they can t do such as coining money, have external affairs, or declare war they are all powers that are left to the national government. The idea of a federalistic government is that there are levels of government there is national level, state then local and depending where you are in the United States you need to follow those rules. The power is not always divided equally though. Even though states have right given in the 10th amendment if the nation wants a state to change something they can refuse funding until they change what they want to be changed. This happened in 1980 when New Jersey changed their drinking age to 19 and the state was at an all time high with 18 20 year olds losing their lives 88 young people died while intoxicated on New Jersey roadways that year. In 1995 the government withdrew highway funding due to the fact that people who drive motorcycles were not required by law to wear helmets while driving this was established and then reinstalled in 1991.

President Clinton then passed a law that eliminated the speed limit and the helmet law now still three states have no rules against wearing helmets.

Commonalities in Religions

The pre Columbian religions found outside of Eurasia were wildly diverse, but they nearly always emphasized a few basic beliefs. Perhaps this was because they stemmed from a similar progenitor religion in the distant past, perhaps they picked up on some basic part of the human psyche. While there were many differences in the intricacies of the religions of Polynesia, the Andes, and Mesoamerica, they all shared a polytheistic faith, a belief that gods are derived from nature, and a belief that sacrificewas needed to maintain the natural order of the world. In polynesia, the dominant pre columbian religionwas animism the belief that all things have some sort of spiritual power. In Polynesia, this power was called mana (Encyclopedia Britannica). Polynesians believed that this spiritual power, this mana, could be negated by human actions. As a result of this, many tapu (brought into English as taboo) were set up in order to prevent humans from upsetting the natural order of the world. As with their neighbors in Mesoamerica, the polynesians believed in a form of human sacrificeto right the unbalance in the mana of a person or a thing. This was especially clear when someone walked over the shadow of a chief or a noble. It was thought that this would damage the mana of the person and only the death of the offender would correct this unbalance. Like most cultures, the Polynesians had many gods which would personify some part of nature and who would be deeply

Why Is Rameck Important

Rameck could have died. If certain events hadn t transpired, if certain people hadn t been met, Rameck could have been killed on the streets earlier in his life. Befriending Sam and George were the beginning of a new chapter in his life. Rameck was intelligent, but he never had the motivation to fulfill his potential until he saw other people doing it. Seeing his two friends work hard and study and stay away from trouble inspired him to do the same. He understood that being surrounded by positive influences could change you, better you. This happened to Rameck, and he wanted to share the power of positive influences with his stepbrother, Michael. Michael and his friends accompanied Rameck onto the college campus. Rameck hoped that they d be inspired to attend, since Michael used to be smart. Michael endured years of bullying and teasing because of his intelligence, and as a result of this, hid his brain behind a facade of new muscles and toughness. His friends, though, were all completely nuisances. All day, Michael and his friends ran across the campus wild, screaming and causing disturbances.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... His stepbrother scoffed and said that Rameck was making a big deal out of nothing (132). As the two argued, a crowd of white people grew around them, much to Rameck s dismay. He attempted to scare them by merely puffing himself up and going too close to a white student, who just smirked at him. Rameck was in a conundrum; his fellow black friends expected him to fight, because that was the norm in Plainfield when someone disrespected you, but he also didn t want to confirm what the white people were beginning to think of

The Spirit Catches You And You Fall Down Analysis

The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down is a novel that details a story of cultural barriers, knowledge, family, and hope amidst challenging circumstances. The novel follows the story of Lia Lee, the fourteenth child of Foua Yang and Nao Kao Lee. The Lees are a Hmong family. So, they are among the 150,000 Hmong who have fled Laos since their country fell to communist forces in 1975 (Fadiman 5). Of all the Lee children, Lia was the only child born in the United States; she was born in the Merced Community Medical Center (MCMC) in California. As far as the Lee family knew, Lia was a happy and healthy baby; there were no complications. Aside from births, MCMC typically serves Hmong patients with hepatitis B, which is carried by at least fifteen percent of the Hmong refugees in the United States (Fadiman 6). The Hmong hold a reputation for being a resilient and proud people. Hmong do not like to take orders; that they do not like to lose; that they would rather flee, fight, or die than surrender; that they are not intimidated by being outnumbered; that they are rarely persuaded that the customs of other cultures, even those more powerful than their own (Fadiman 17). It is no surprise that throughout the novel, the Lee family encounters several cultural barriers from the minute that their daughter, Lia, was born. Unfortunately, one incident when Lia was about three months old changed the Lee family s life forever. Lia was in the house when her
