Another way in which language can prevent or resolve a conflict is by its role in nationalism that implies a process of unification. Unification can either be the cause of a conflict because your local identity is attacked or be the cause of a resolution because, inherently, people are setting apart their differences and coming together into a nation. In the process of building a unified nation, a unified language must appear as well. Smith (1998), argues that the unification of language, for example, is a political act as well as a waract as long as it oppresses local identities and this may be a cause of conflict The process of unification can be a war act as Smith states because you are being conquered. Your language and identity are being stripped off you and that can cause confrontation. However, the same unification process has a self implication of bringing together places that were once separated for different reasons which constitutes a conflict resolution method. People are putting aside their differences in order to have a nation. The differences don´t disappear but a new rhetoric about... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When we think of a conflict there must be at least two opposing sides. Nationalism is a way of making this problem between two parties one that involves two complete countries. The individual differences disappear and the problem is now a binary one with extreme opposing sides, each being the whole people of each country as they are united under nationalism. Language in nationalism also lets us trace the border between two communities, language marks out a community because it is the primary means of communication (Smith, 1998, 28). International conflicts can arise because of this impossibility to communicate effectively and the division this creates. So, language in nationalism contributes to conflicts because it creates the difference between the opposing sides and makes the conflict one that involves all the
The campaign of the occupation lays the advantages as well as the disadvantages of the CSSTA under the sun stark naked; unfortunately, the pact is already passed. The forced adoption by the KMT highlights the Ma government s arbitrary abuse of the power and infringement of the human right, leading to the constitutional crisis of the retrogression in democracy. It meanwhile stimulates civilians to ponder the rebirth of democracy. (堅持,直到島嶼天光, see footnote , translation mine). The interaction of the trade activities between Mainland China and Taiwan always successfully draws attention from the global, but this time the fuel is directly presented in the manifesto of the Sunflower Movement 堅持,直到島嶼
天光. People are mainly protesting the CSSTA [Cross Strait Service Trade Agreement, CSSTA] against the untransparent processes. This agreement, passed without the regular procedure, underlines the dark side of the Ma government and how it simultaneously summons up civilians to deeply think about what is now striking the democracy in Taiwan. In addition to the domestic problems originating from the CSSTA, the other vital issue our nation is encountering now is that Taiwan is standing at a lower position in this financial game. The scales and structures of business are totally different between Taiwan and China. If we just accept the trade without detailed consideration, China is likely [taking] control over Taiwan by means of financial interactions, and it will lead to what Hong Kong
The U.S. Constitution guarantees every defendant a right to counsel and to a fair trial. That right is often rationed. Those with financial resources receive the best justice money can buy, while the poor are left with a little justice system valuing expediency over quality, resulting in the majority of cases ending in plea bargains (Love, 2017). Kids for Cash is a judicial scandal that was investigated. In the year 2009, Federal investigated Luzerne County courts where numerous criminal behaviors were unveiled from the bench. Because juveniles were restraint like criminals when they are being arrested, the PSC adopted Rule 139, prohibiting the use of various restraints, including handcuffs, chains, shackles, irons or straitjackets on children appearing in court ( Juvenile Law Center , 2012) . The only way they can use such restraints is if the court determines, after providing the youth with an opportunity to be heard that they are necessary to prevent physical harm, stop disruptive behavior that creates the potential for harm, or to keep the juvenile from fleeing ( Juvenile Law Center , 2012) . In cases like this, it is necessary to restrain them. In the movie, it was unnecessary to constrain a juvenile with a minor
Malaysia in the 1990s: Case Analysis Decision analysis: What is the best strategy for the Malaysian government moving forward? This decision can only be made after the country s current strategy and how well it works is analyzed. Adopt the view of the Prime Minister. Consider the character s strengths, responsibilities, and blind spots. Why is the Prime Minister in this dilemma? 1. Are the charges of the environmental groups true? Yes. Based on the information in the case, timber harvesting is out of control, particularly in Sarawak. The rate in which the timber is being harvested cannot be sustained and eventually will dry up. The Malaysian government recognizes this issue and the Western interests groups are threatening to... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There would be less interest from the US and Europe to invest in Malaysia. There is a divide between Western Malaysia and Eastern Malaysia. The primary exports to Western countries come from finished goods out of Western Malaysia, whereas in Eastern Malaysia (Sarawak and Sabah) they primarily export raw materials to the Eastern world. 4. What is your hypothesis? Decision options: The Prime Minister has a few choices: * The Malaysian government rejects criticism and threats of the Western government and environmentalists, making no changes to current policies but keeping a close eye on fixing some of the problems, particularly in Eastern Malaysia. * The Malaysian government accepts the criticism of the Western government and environmentalists, making all necessary changes. * The Malaysia government makes selective changes to policy based on the criticism of the Western government and environmentalists. Considerations: * Connections with the US and Europe based on his government s ambitious economic strategy for growth. * The use of natural resources like the forests, the impact on the country. * The relations with environmental groups outside Malaysia. * The motive of Western based environmental groups. Surgical site infections plague patients all over the world on a daily basis. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that drug resistant bacteria cause two million illnesses and about 23,000 deaths each year in the United States alone (Frieden, 2013).

Billy Wilder (1906 2002), Austrian born American filmmaker, screenwriter, producer, artist and journalist, was one of those remarkable and highly talented directors that could create dramas and comedies with ease, influential and versatile with a career spanning fifty years, Wilder left an indelible mark during Hollywood s Golden Era of filmmaking. With The Apartment, Wilder became the first person to win Academy Awards as producer, director and screenwriter for the same film(Wikipedia). He was born Samuel Wilder, in the 1920s he took an interest in writing and filmmaking, but left Germany when Adolf Hitler rose to power. Wilder moved to Paris and made his directorial debut with the French film Mauvaise graine (Bad Seed) in 1934. Most of Wilder s family all died during the Holocaust.... Wilder teamed up with writing partner, Charles Brackett, and together they wrote some of Hollywood s best classic comedies like Ninotchka (1939) starring Greta Garbo and Melvyn Douglas, and he was able to weave melodramatic films as well. Wilder s directing style is most comfortable with cynical humor matched with witty dialogue, that made him perfect for creating satirical films based on the absurd, and easily blended these with his approach on film noirs. Wilder consistently pushed the limits of the U.S. censorship of the day with his provocative choice of subject matter that include adultery, Double Indemnity (1944), alcoholism, The Lost Weekend (1945), and the younger, kept man, Sunset Boulevard (1950) (Schneider
Marijuana Legalization Why is it the Best Choice for America? Marijuana, the most abused drug in America, has had a lot of publicity recently. Marijuana has caused multiple economic problems within the U.S. A controversial question has arisen from the increased popularity and troubles of this drug. The question is whether or not the U.S. government should legalize marijuana possession and sale in the country. Many Americans believe that the drug should be legalized for various reasons; others, however, are against the legalization of the dangerous drug. While legalization has both pros and cons, the positives of legalizing marijuana for those people over the age of twenty one far outweigh the negative aspects of legalization. Marijuana... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The United States government, in order to solve the marijuana problem, needs to completely legalize the drug and place similar regulations on marijuana as it does alcohol. It should not only be decriminalized; decriminalization would only legalize the possession of marijuana. If the government chose to decriminalize the substance, it would still waste millions of dollars in prosecuting all other marijuana related crimes. Decriminalization would also fail to make the sale of marijuana legal in the country, thus losing a product with the ability to provide the country with a substantial source of revenue. Marijuana should be legal for sale to all individuals over the age of twenty one. The reason for the age restriction of twenty one is due to the similar effects of alcohol and marijuana. Both of these substances are mild intoxicants (Ford). The government must also place the same sales tax on marijuana as it places on tobacco and alcohol; without this special tax, the government s profit on the taxation of marijuana would be noticeably less. There are several benefits which would come to the government through the legalization
Scott Peck describes delaying gratification as a process of scheduling the pain and pleasure of life in such a way to enhance the pleasure ... (pg 19). In other words, it is realizing that in life, and especially at work in any job, there are tasks and responsibilities that are enjoyable and there are tasks and responsibilities that bring very little joy. By consciously scheduling the less enjoyable tasks around those that are more enjoyable, time managementwill improve and productivity will increase. People will be less likely to delay the less desirable tasks and responsibilities if they know that once those tasks are complete, there awaits one that produces more enjoyment. In my career, the task I least enjoy is marking. I love classroom instruction, interacting with the students, participating in extra curricular activities, but marking is pure drudgery. However, I know that marking is an essential part of learning and I try to schedule my marking time in the morning when I am not distracted by other events or tired. In today s technological world, organizations have a significantly more difficult time with this tool than when Mr. Peck wrote this book. Electronic devices and social media have created a culture of instant gratification. There is no need to wait until one gets home to talk about the day. Thoughts and ideas are posted and instantly responded to by people around the world. Many work places have had to create policy about employees using electronic devices
Utilitarianism: A person of this school of thought would evaluate the situation on the basis of its consequences. They would have to decide what brings about the greatest happiness and the least amount of pain for the greatest number of people on the yacht, which is known as the principle of utility. In deciding on the best outcome, they might fill the lifeboats with as many people as possible and leave the rest of the people to fend for themselves on the sinking yacht. The assumption is that half safe is better than all in danger. Another way they might decide is by using utilitarian calculus. If an action has a higher positive value than its alternatives, then it is the better policy. For example, given the choice between either putting a... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Deontology: A deontologist would say that cheating on your spouse is wrong regardless of the consequences. They would make their decision to keep Megan s secret based on duty. A deontologist would say that cheating is wrong because it involves violating a duty of fidelity by breaking the promise Megan made to Tim when they married, without considering the good or bad consequences of the cheating itself. The prima facie duty holds true in general, unless there are severe cases against it. For example, cheating is normally wrong, unless Megan feels neglected by her husband. Many deontologists would allow exceptions of cheating, which would be based on the personal circumstances surrounding the person cheating, whether or not it leads to good overall consequences. For instance, Megan would know if she is being neglected by Tim, but she can only guess how cheating will affect her, her husband, or anyone else in her life. A strength in this way of thinking is whether or not you are a good person depends only on what you intend to do, not what actually happens. With this view, you cannot be blamed for things that you had no intention of
There are two types of learning systems most commonly used in the world, Online learning and Traditional classroom teaching. Online learning is basically a system which involves electronic media and information. In simple it is getting training and communication research through electronic media. It would not be wrong to call online learning, the future of education. Online learning does have some weak points, but the solutions that have been provided are more than enough to cover up the cons. Online learning system is not perfect, it has some deficiencies, but it s definitely the system of the future. Many people still prefer traditional universities as the best way to get knowledge and a degree but online education is also a good proven alternative. Through online education students can study in the environment they find comfortable and the time they are free. All of this is for free as most online course which universities offer don t have any fee or if some courses have then that is very less as compared to the price of normal course at a university. This is the reason which gives online education an edge over traditional classroom learning. By using online education students can... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
First, rather than being tethered to a specific time allotment, the online degree seeker is able to learn with complete flexibility. This is ideal for those with unconventional work hours, those working full time, serving in the military or those raising a family. Moreover, the traditional method of lectures, books and desks may not be the optimum learning environment for every student. In a New York Times article, experts declared that the real promise of online education is providing learning experiences that are more tailored to individual students than is possible in classrooms, which in turn fosters the concept of learning by doing. Many students find this engagement more useful and more
Abilene Christian University (ACU) in Texas has kicked out several teenage students for posing in blackface on a video on messaging app Snapchat. A video surfaced on Snapchat showing an unidentified white female student sporting black makeup covering her face and oversized costume lips. In the said clip, the student says I m a strong black woman while people s laughter in the background is audible, the Daily Mail describes. In addition, the Snapchat video is accompanied by the caption: This is why black lives matter exists. The footage has sparked outrage among ACU students, with one student expressing disbelief that someone at ACU could do something like that. Others called for the students who made the Snapchat video to be thrown off
I ve recently read four pieces of literature that were based on the trials and tribulations of war. When comparing all four literary works there are just as many similarities as there are differences. The first and longest is the novel, All Quiet on the Western Front, by Erich Maria Remarque. The second piece is the poem titled In Flanders Fields , by John McCrae. The third work was another poem this one by Ivor Gurney, titled Ballad of the Three Spectres . The fourth and finale literary piece up for comparison was also a poem named Glory of Women , by Siegfried Sassoon. These four pieces of literature have many similarities and differences, throughout this essay I will be pointing out some of the major ones. The book All Quiet on the Western Front, Erich Maria Remarque is a fictional novelbased on the author s own experience as an infantryman in the German army. It was first published in 1929. The novel takes place during World War I, and is about a group of young men that are friends and comrades in the same platoon. The main character, Paul Baumer narrates the story from his point of view. When compared to the other works in this essay, All Quiet on the Western Front, as a novel is obviously the longest at 290 pages. It is also the only work that details specific characters as opposed to the poems, which can be told by any character s point of view. It takes place over a longer span of time and describes a few humorous and lighthearted moments, amiss the seriousness
