Social and Ethical Technology Concerns Biotechnology
Biotechnology is technology based on living organisms. It harnesses cellular and biomolecular processes to develop technologies or products which are immensely useful to mankind. Biotechnology modifies living organisms according to our needs. Humans have employed this tool in the fields of agriculture, food industry and medicine for more than 6000 years. We see numerous biotechnological applications in our every day life. Preparation of food products like bread, cheese and preservatives in dairy products are all outcomes of this great scientific tool (Biotechnology Industry Organization). Modern biotechnological research has created wonders for mankind. It has provided products to combat rare diseases, vaccines for untreatable diseases, food for the hungry and a safer, cleaner environment to our planet.
Biotechnology has played a vital role in reducing the green house effect and in producing a cleaner planet. Because of the worldwide economic and environmental concerns regarding the use of petro chemicals, extensive research has been conducted on residual biomass. Significant progress has been made in the field of lignocellulose biotechnology. Lignocellulosic waste materials have been used in the production of bio fuels, enzymes, chemicals, the pulp and paper, animal feed and composites (Iqbal, 2013). Moreover, algal biomass has received huge attention in producing biofuels due to their relatively high growth rate, great
Tucked away in a corner of The Oaks mall sits a quiet bookstore. Its exterior is something that resembles stone brick with wooden trimmings. The doors are propped open in an invitation to come in and peruse the text laden shelves and dawdle amongst countless authors. Plastered on one of the open doors is a stark black poster advertising an open mic night on the third Friday of every month. Large glass windows offer not only a glimpse into the bookstore, but also display a variety of new books on white shelves. At the very top, there are a row of black lamps illuminating the name of the bookstore. The letters sit proudly above the doors in a cool grey: The Open Book. If you take a moment to look inside, it s a little overwhelming and... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Books new ones that remain to be sorted, you guess tower precariously on either side of the counter, and above the register is the name of the bookstore in an olive green. Surrounding it are small, framed chalkboards. They advertise things like story time on Sundays and a book club in intricate handwriting. Everything has a nostalgic tinge to it. From wooden bookshelves to chalkboard handwriting, the Open Book seems to be a space removed from the digital age of Kindles and fancy computer search systems. Even the store décor is reminiscent of a simpler time, with hand lettering painted on the walls and framed artwork from past art competitions the bookstore has held. But of course, the first thing that will catch your eye if you enter is the word Vintage painted black in a neat, serif font along what seems to be the back wall. Curiously, you may approach this wall first, and without fault it is one of the bookstore s proudest walls. The shelves here are lined with books that look like they fell out of a library scene in a Hollywood movie. A little dusty, and a little worn, these books boast of their history. Many of the texts are bound in a deep red or navy blue, labeled in gold lettering and arranged by color. This wall alone may be the most picturesque in the entire store. Perhaps you ll open a book, just to take a look.
In America each person believes it is his or her right to own a home. Banks believe they should give each person the money to finance a home. Countrywide was at the forefront for many years in providing loans to consumers. Their ethics were placed into question when homeowners started losing homes after 2006. Bank of Americaintervened to assist on home loans affected. Their strong code of ethics, team values, and guiding principles ensured clients that their loans would be secured.
During the time prior to the mortgage crisis, the economy was looking good to the mortgage brokers and lenders in the United States as well as new homeowners. After all, it is the American Dream to own a Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Bank of America s company philosophy is we believe, very simply, that it is the actions of individuals working together that build strong communities ... and that business has an obligation to support those actions in the communities it serves (Lewis). As stated on their company website overview, Bank of America is committed to creating meaningful change in the communities they serve through their philanthropic efforts, associate volunteerism, community development, and investing, support of the arts, and environmental initiatives (Bank of America, n.d.). Their neighborhood revitalization and stabilization programs were designed to aid, restore, and invigorate communities suffering from the growing number of foreclosed and vacant properties. They are further committed to cost efficient and environmentally sustainable practices that benefit the global community. An example of this is the Bank of America Tower in New York City, one of the world s most environmentally friendly skyscrapers. Bank of America expects and actively encourages its employees to act ethically, honor Bank of America s code of ethics, care about one another, and value their communities.
Bank of America core values were established to ensure the team of employees is serving their customers needs. The five core values are short but strong in words. Established by Bank of America to ensure confidence in consumer s relation, the five values are:
Both the original text and the adaptation of V for Vendetta provokes us to analyze fascism, dystopian societies, and anarchism in order to establish an idyllic society. Through specific attention to detail, they both share a narrative, which centers on the characters V and Evey, provoking us to question V and at some point Evey s morality. V for Vendetta serves as an interpretation on England in the later 20th century. The graphic novel and the movie adaptation of V for Vendetta carry many major and similar themes, however the way in which both works depict such are dissimilar. Fascism is a very prominent notion within both works; Norsefire, the police, and even the chancellor are all adequate exemplars of how England has become a fascist... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, the graphic novel portrays V more of an anarchist compared to the adaptation. In the graphic novel V is more so a symbol of anarchy due to the fact that he wont let anyone get in his way and will murder if he has to. He kills both the innocent and the guilty regardless of remorse. They are a means to an end for him. Similarly, to reach his ends, he imprisoned, tortured and psychologically broke down Evey. He basically brainwashes Evey into thinking and seeing the world the way he does. For these reasons, it can be argued that V is not much of a protagonist. Nevertheless, V tries to bring independence to the world through destruction and force, similarly to the way he was brought up at the concentration camps of Lark Hill. V himself is a representation of anarchy; it is the reason why his name is purely a symbol. V is famously quoted for saying, What was done to me created me. It s a basic principle of the Universe that every action will create an equal and opposing reaction. Yet there is an immense contrast compared to the film. The adaptation depicts V has a romantic freedom fighter fighting for justice and equality. V only kills those who have caused harm and foul on him. Moore s version of V is more tough and gritty. V states in the movie, A revolution without dancing is a revolution not worth having. This quote, made famous by Emma Goldman, is not actually a line in the graphic novel however that being said this scene can be perceived as an allusion to the quote. It fits due to the strong anarchistic ideals in V for
1. Introduction Throughout the past recent decades, the world has become entangled in an unstoppable process of globalization. The phenomenon is normally understood as a process by which the traditional barriers between the countries are gradually removed to allow the free circulation of natural resources, people, capitals, or even cultural values and traditions. The globalizing effort has had a multitude of impacts, such as the popularization of the western culture throughout the eastern hemisphere (through movies, music, fashion and so on), the increasing access to technologic innovations throughout the entire globe or the liberalization of the countries to international trade. In the specific context of trade, this is characterized by domestic imports and exports, with the scope of any state being that of maximizing exports and minimizing imports, in an effort to generate a positive trade balance and generate high revenues from exports. With the intensifying forces of globalization, more emphasis has fallen on liberalization in the meaning of eliminating the barriers to international business and trade. Still, as the countries continue to emphasis on their exports in the detriment of imports, trade and businesses have yet to be fully liberalized. Throughout the current project, a question is raised relative to what could or should be done in order to improve the overall global context of trade and businesses. Five specific
In Phantasmagoria, one story that the group performed that really stuck out to me was The Masque of the Red Death by Edgar Allen Poe. To sum the short story up, it is about a prince named Prospero who hides away in his castle with his wealthy friends trying to hide from The Red Death , which in the play is shown as a skeleton like ghoul, but in the actual story, the Red Death plague is personified by a victim of it. There were many performers in the show, I heard all of their names, but in truth the names were not important. For the show itself, all the characters had names, but they acted out and performed poems and short stories, in which they went under different aliases, so it is difficult to have kept all the names in check. My favorite aesthetic choice of this performance actually ties all four of the choices together. It was the Victorian theme of the performance that really caught my eye and excited me. They played Victorian aged music for certain parts of the performance, and one of the cast members even played a cello during certain dramatic monologues. The costumes in this performance reminded me of the gypsies in the Robert Downey Junior Sherlock Holmes movie, which went so well with the overall performance. The movement and dance of the performance always was directly influenced by the Victorian theme as well. In one portion of the play, the performers waltzed and another performed something of a ballet styled dance, which was quite amazing to watch. And the
While living together you have to be good at communicating what your plans are for the day yourself in general, while taking the viewpoints of those who you are living with into account. The situation that occurred in our room we obviously did not communicate effectively. As I was unaware of the situation that was occurring in our room. We have to effectively communicate and our communicationhas to be honest, open, and two wayed. We all have to respectwhat the other is saying and the wishes of others. Communication is a key aspect in making anything run smoothly, and quite obviously Kevin did not communicate what his plans for the night were. With that being said we also decided that one of the major issues with this was that he said that he had some friends over and the friends were inviting their friends. As you saw at the hearing it seemed like there was a lot of different groups of people that came separately and didn t know Kevin or other people in the room. So another thing we decided would have prevent the situation from happening was, setting limits, and following the school limit for guests allowed in the room, as well as being able to say no to people if it is going to exceed the limit. Communicating when other roommates are not present in the room, such as myself and Zach... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... We have to be open as well as have a two sided conversation. This means that we don t just hear what each other have to say, but we have to listen, and take their opinions into account and follow the wishes of every room member. This goes both ways. It is ok to have friends over, and a social aspect of college is important, however we have to be accountable and hold our roommates accountable and make them follow the University guidelines, and expect them to follow the guidelines especially when they are in our room as its is also our living area and responsibility that they guidelines be followed
When I was choosing my college, I looked at a lot of different factors. These factors included the location of the college, the school s diversity rate, and the rank of the college. I also spent a lot of time researching in state colleges because tuition was cheaper and only certain in state schools would take all my collegecredit plus courses, which started me off as a sophomore here at the Universityof Cincinnati. One huge deciding factor was if I felt that I could make a difference at the university or not. When I went on my UC college tour the area reminded me of home and I felt that I would ve been able to make an impact at the school and the environment, I felt that I would be more than just a number. Immigration and The Australian restriction act
Immigration has always played a major role in Australia. Historically the Australian immigration act, also known as the white Australia policy and its eventual repeal made a significant role in shaping Australian culture. The Australian government completely removed the policy in 1973. The policy makers feared that if immigration was allowed that the standard of living would reduce. the policy was seen as racist and gradually resulted in Australian society being restricted of the social and economic benefits of cultural diversification. Following the removal of the policy, Australiawas hit with a large influx of immigrants and different cultures. Today, Australia considers itself to be a multicultural country, but hints of racism is still present. The population of immigrants has greatly influenced Australia s culture by making Australia a multicultural country
The immigration restriction act was the first piece of legislation to be passed in the federal parliament. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The rush of new people introduced Australia to diverse cultures, religions and languages. Australia went from being devoted to the idea of becoming the White Australia to a multicultural country whom now shares multiple economics and politics of the Asian Pacific regions (Neville Meaney, 1995). Currently Australia s migration policy gives any country the opportunity to migrate to Australia, regardless of their culture, race, religion or language (Spinks, 2010). Australian have slowly changed their attitudes towards foreigners. As a variety of cultures have been exposed Australians have developed an understand of other cultures and religions. Although many Australians have accepted the country s new role as a multicultural nation, there is still a large strong unlaying of racism in
The Loch Ness Monster terror of the scottish lakes. The monster considered fake by some, but there is a group of people who believe in it and claim to have seen it. Being near 6 meters long with a horse s head and a mane. It has thin fins like legs and 2 to 3 humps on its back. Being considered a myth by many, they consider people who believe in it as crazy.(D.
