Symbolism In Ernest Hemingway s Hills Like White Elephants

An Analysis of the Symbolism in Ernest Hemingway s Hills Like White Elephants

Ernest Hemingway uses symbols to illustrate the severity of the relationship between Jig and her American boyfriend and portrayal of the operation they are discussing. The reader can infer the events in the story from the use of the symbols and come to the conclusion about the abortion that Hemingway implies throughout the whole plot.

Hemingway provides insight by using the title Hills Like White Elephants; the symbol of a white elephant has a very negative connotation in the story. The term means something that is useless or causes trouble especially if it is expensive to maintain or difficult to dispose of. By Hemingway implying this, he reveals the idea of an abortion to the situation in the story. As the story begins, Hemingway describes the hills and fields surrounding the train station. The hills off in the distance symbolize the growing belly of Jig but also symbolize the strain of obstacles in Jig and her boyfriend s relationship. The scene Hemingway describes tells the reader about the decision they are making. Jig s boyfriend is entirely against the idea of having the baby and dissociates the idea of the fetus. It s really not anything, (Hemingway) Jig s boyfriend completely disregards the idea of the pregnancy all together, while Jig sees it as we could have all of this... and we could have everything (Hemingway). She sees the possibility of maybe having the child but has an internal conflict in deciding if she should go through with the operation or not. Religion in Spain at this time was Catholic, and the Catholic church s moral was that killing of innocent life was consistently wrong (Podell 88). Catholicism views abortion as erroneous since the fetus is innocent when the mother decides to terminate the baby. Maguire explains the severity of abortion being seen as homicide along with the idea of the act being sorcery and witchcraft (34). Obviously, the couple is not ready to care for a baby, Hemingway uses the word two to get the point across that they both cannot handle parenting in this stage of their relationship. For example, two glasses of beer and two felt pads, having the train stop at [the] junction

The Simulation Exercise On Foreign Policy Essay

The simulation exercise learns the students how to make decisions in the U.S foreign policy. The members of the cabinet are instructed by the president to use one model in their decision making process. The secretaries follow a Bureaucratic Politics model, each Cabinet member instructed to make a particular decision based on his/her organizational agendas. The President is free to follow whatever process he find it appropriate. Several situation updates during the exercise according to the crisis atmosphere of the decision making. In the end, students find out that to make decision in the foreign policy is much harder than they thought. Shortage of information, time, and different personal backgrounds and organizational information all get in the way of reaching a dicission. Prior to the exercise in class, I play the president of the United States leading the NSC meeting, and looking from my position on stopping the flow of the refugees, the Turkish government should have held responsible for the Syrian refugee, and for terrorists (ISIL) operating cross the boarders, then what the Security Council should do in response to ISIL. During the Security Council meeting in class, my Cabinets work together to find a resolution in response to the bombing of the boarder s Turkish cities, and the theatre with the stadium attacking in Franc calamities. Concludes that my advisors and I gain a greater understanding of how The National Security Council works. I also demonstrated a

Statement Of A Mechanical Engineering

Statement of Purpose

There is this famous saying, Certain things catch your eye, but pursue only those that capture the heart . Growing up as a kid, I picturesquely recall the moment that inspired me to become a Mechanical Engineer. In my childhood, I saw people using living muscles as energy sources to do their agricultural works like ploughing and irrigating fields. Although life has been drastically different due to furtherance of technology in most part of the world, most of the people in my country, Nepal, are relying on conventional methods. Our country is lagging behind technologies though there are lot of potencies. This motivates me to study the subject that can help me to bring changes in technological aspect of my society and country.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Right way, his elegancy in making us to understand about mild steels cast iron and various heat treatment process involved in making wheels and axles impressed me big time. Similarly, I attended a workshop in Photovoltaics and I felt importance of material science for enhancing efficiency of solar cells. My keen interest and desire to go to the roots of each and every concept, profundity of thinking and systematic approach of understanding the subject matter help me to secure Gold Medal at institutional level for academic excellence in Mechanical Engineering department of the college where I did my under graduate study. With a sense of focus and responsibilities I learnt the intricacies involved in research and the kinds of demands that it makes. All of this coupled with the sense of achievement which comes at the end, encouraged me to be a part of research which would help me explore the areas of my interest, namely Microstructure

The Discovery Of Fluconazole,

Fluconazole

Background/History

Fluconazole is a white, hygroscopic, crystalline powder, and is an orally active bistriazole antifungal agent.1 The discovery of fluconazole was a milestone in the pharmaceutical industry because it was the first antifungal drug that could be used both orally for minor infections, and intravenously for serious systemic infections. The development and use of antifungals continues to become more of a necessity as the need for protecting immunosuppressed and HIV patients from developing fungal infections increases.2 Although fungal thrush was recorded to be a fatal disease as early as the 1600s, the development of antifungals did start until the 1900s ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These turning points led to the formation of several bis triazoles. The first was a chloroacetyl derivative, which was reacted with 1,2,4 triazol to yield a ketone, which was then converted to an epoxide and then opened, resulting in the first bis triazole derivative. The second approach required converting dichloroacetone to dichloropropanol derivative and reacting it with 1,2,4 triazole, which produced the second bis triazole. These bis triazoles were then synthesized in a large number of 2 substituted 1,3 bis triazolylpropan 2 ol derivatives. Out of the tested derivatives, it was found that the 2,4 difluorophenyl analogue was water soluble, meaning it was could be used intravenously; hence the successful development of fluconazole.2

Chemistry

Fluconazole, which is a systemic triazole, has a molecular weight of 306.27 g/mol. The drug should be stored in airtight containers at 30°C. The chemical name for fluconazole is 2 (2,4 Difluorophenyl) 1,3 bis(1H 1,2,4 triazol 1 yl)propan 2 ol, and chemical structure (Figure 1) is: Figure 1. Diflucan [Package Insert]. New York, NY: Pfizer Inc., March 2013. It is soluble in alcohol, toluene, and acetone, and slightly soluble in chloroform, isopropyl alcohol, and water.4

Diflucan the brand name for flucnonzaole in oral suspension contains 350 mg or 1400 mg of fluconazole and the

Arguments Against Veganism

Ever since the beginning of time, man has hunted and consumed animals for survival. Because of this, it is been taught for millennials that meat is an essential to our bodies for survival and health. While we are capable of eating meat, the question is, should we? Firstly, humans do not need to eat meat, or any other animal products for that matter, for survival. Modern day humans are not living in the same conditions as early humans were, making it unnecessary for us to consume animal products. We no longer need to rely on animals for consumption, and in fact, it is actually best to leave them absent from your diet. Numerous amounts of studies have been conducted that support the claim that consuming animal products is detrimental... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One of the most common arguments is that our ancestors ate it, so so should we. Humans have had omnivorous diets since the beginning of mankind, and this has been an argument that is oftenly used against veganism. Early humans were scavengers and ate whatever they could find for the purpose of survival and it is believed that humans ate a majority of meat, however scientific studies have shown otherwise. In a study conducted, plant derived fiber was the majority of what was found in early human feces (nutritionfacts.org). Vegaprocity (vegaprocity.com) shows that both carnivores and omnivores require fiber to stimulate peristalsis, while all herbivores, frugivores, and humans do require fiber to stimulate peristalsis, however in America, usually less than half the recommended fiber intake a day is consumed (nutritionfacts.org). While there is no denial that early humans did not hunt and eat animals, this suggests that the majority of what was ate ate was not meat, but in fact plants and herbs. When compared to carnivores, humans show more similarity to herbivores and frugivores. One of the common arguments used in opposition to veganism is that humans are supposed to eat meat because the mechanism of our body suggest so. This, however, is false. When compared to carnivores and herbivores, humans share far more similarities with herbivores. To begin with, humans have short and soft

Summary Of Legal Alien By Pat Mora

In Pat Mora s poem Legal Alien , the speaker uses language to undermine the single story that people of two cultures can only belong within one category; thus asserting the danger of isolation from both cultures that accompanies this single story. Mora uses a comparison to highlight how a two sided object can be conjoined to create one cohesive item. Comparing themself to a handy token the speaker references the ability to have two cultures, yet remain as one person. The metaphor asserts that the speaker is similar to a token, which is an object of two sides, yet one complete object. In the context of the speakers two competing cultures Mexican and American, the speaker is still one person. The usage of a metaphor challenges society s common... The use of the verb pre judged, illustrates how the speaker, will always be mistaken for who they are not. Their true identity can t be revealed, due to the fact that they are already judged and the single story has already been created. Further, Mora adds bi laterally , to reveal how the judging takes place on both sides, or by the two cultures. This begins to reveal the danger of isolation that comes with the single story. As Mexicans learn the speaker is American, the speaker becomes alien. As Americans learn the speaker is Mexican, the speaker becomes exotic... inferior...[and] different. The speaker will constantly be misinterpreted for who they are not, based on their cultural identities. As bi cultural people are pre judged, they don t get a chance to display their true demeanors, due to the fact that society can t look beyond their first impressions. The speaker can t be accepted, and is too foreign to be classified as both cultures. As a result, the speaker faces

I grabbed the nearest bus to Ohio and there was an old lady I sat next to. She talked with wisdom and she told me that running away wasn t a good idea. I looked at her with a surprised look how did you know she said I don t know you tell me. I look through the window and then back at here and then she was gone. I slept in a hotel in Ohio for a couple nights it was cold and moldy in most places especially in the bathroom. The place reeked probably because the sheets were never washed and the couch looked like it was 100 years old. I tried to get a job at the hotel but they declined me due to me not having any cards or anything to prove who I was. I was fine with that anyway I didn t want to work in a place that smelled like B.O. I left the hotel in Ohio, and started to look for somewhere to work and since I did not have any cards to prove who I was it was hard. I moved though the city of Columbus and worked my way to a rural area where I slept outside. I did not get much sleep anyway. I woke up and went back into town. I saw a BMX bike that looked cool and I bought it I went down town. I decided that it would be a good idea to eat at a Café. It was ok but the coffee was gross. I left and put my bike up for sale and got twice as much I paid
