Susan Glaspell s A Jury Of Her Peers
Susan Glaspell Works
Perhaps the most notable difference between the two works is the change in title. The title of the drama, Trifles implies the inconsequential nature of the women, in the eyes of their male counterparts. Several times, within both works, the men regard the women as frivolous. In the drama, one of Mrs. Peters first lines is an explanation of Mrs. Wright s concern over the state of her fruit preserves: Oh, her fruit; it did freeze. She worried about that when it turned so cold. She said the fire d go out and her jars would break (Trifles). Mrs. Peters explanation is met with mockery as her husband replies Well can you beat women! Held for murder and worryin about her preserves (Trifles). This exchange comes just ... I sew awful queer sometimes when I m just tired (Jury 12). While the dialogue remains unchanged, the reversal of roles feels more natural to the characters of the short story, and the addition of inflection in Mrs. Hale s voice adds a deliberateness to her comment that is absent from the play. This is not the only significant change in the dialogue of the two works. Another small, but significant, change in dialogue occurs later in the two works, as the investigation comes to an end. The men are returning to the kitchen and the County Attorney says to Mr. Peters No, Peters, it s all perfectly clear, except a reason for doing it. But you know juries when it comes to women. If there was some definite thing. Something to show something to make a story about... and here is where the comment differs. In Trifles the Attorney completes his thought saying, a thing that would connect up with this strange way of doing it (Trifles). The statement differs only slightly from the short story, as the Attorney concludes his thought saying, A thing that would connect up with this clumsy way of doing it (Jury 18). The change in wording is slight, but the revised version of the short story carries a different connotation. Merriam Webster defines strange as 3.a. Discouraging familiarities (Merriam Webster), meaning that the method used to
How Does Euripides Present The Presentation Of Women In Medea
Amongst Euripides most famous plays, Medea went against the audience s expectations at his time. Indeed, the main character of the play is Medea, a strong, independent female who neglected moral and society s expectations of a woman. She was therefore in all ways different to how women were perceived in Ancient Greece. This essay will explore how Euripidescontroversial characters demonstrate that his views were ahead of his time.
Ancient Greek society was ahead of its time politically speaking. Indeed they initiated the concept of democracy. Of course, this democracy did not include everyone in Greece; male citizens dominated society and had full legal status. They were divided into three classes depending on wealth. Females on the other ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This caused both of them criticism because their descriptions went against their contemporary society s views, both playwrights are now considered to have been ahead of their time. The Trojan womenis another of Euripides plays. Its main characters are women, each with differing complex personalities. Hecabe was the queen of Troja, her situation makes her a tragic character and attracts pity. On the other hand, her daughter the princess Cassandra is dedicated to the gods; she bears the curse of having the ability of foresight whilst never being trusted, thrown onto her by the god Apollo. Finally Hecabe s daughter in law Andromache, proud and noble. The protagonists being so different from each other, they each will have a different approach to the play s events. Furthermore Menelaus, one of the play s two male characters, is considered weak in contrast with the strong female personalities present. The trojan women also question the god s power and men s dependence on them. The gods in the play are depicted as flawed, therefore assimilated with simple

The IPods Impact on Society
Design is not just what it looks and feels like. Design is how it works. (Issacson). This is a famous quote by Steve Jobs. The project was a secret. Other then Steve Jobs and a few other apple executives nobody knew what it was. The code name was P 68 (Knopper). The IPod was introduced to the public in 2001. At first, it was only compatible with Mac computers, but two years later, the iPod could be used with any type of computer. This caused sales to skyrocket! Steve Jobs worked with apple inc. to come up with the IPod. Although Apple was not the first to come up with the idea of an mp3 player, no other mp3 player has ever been as big of a hit. ... ITunessells single tracks for around $0.99. Most consumers no longer buy entire albums from artists. Instead they buy a few favorite songs. This has shown a decrease in CD sales, therefore a decrease in profit that artists make off of their music. The IPod has definitely changed the music industry, but is it really for the better? Some would argue that the IPod has destroyed the music industry. Apple continues to make billons of dollars every year with the IPod bringing in forty percent of their sales Knopper). How does it affect the rest of the music industry? Sales of records have plunged and ITunes along with illegal music downloading is to blame.

The IPod has given a new meaning to the world stealing . Years ago, stealing music meant physically going to the store and stealing the record. In this day in age, it is hard to control people from stealing music on the Internet. File sharing and Digital Media make downloading music illegally more widespread. Artists, along with many other people in the music industry lose money due to illegal downloading of music. With websites whose purpose is to share free downloadable music, who would want to pay about a dollar per song to buy music through Itunes? Not only is downloading free music on the Internet easy, it is also very hard to get in trouble for it. Napster was the first website with downloadable software with the purpose of trading free music. It started off as a chat room
Crude Oil Resources In Alberta
Alberta s Crude Oil Resources What is crude oil? Crude oil is found trapped in the underground rock; it is a natural occurring mixture of hydrocarbon compounds, cause from dead marine life and vegetation from millions of years ago. These materials had died and settled on the bottoms of streams, lakes, and oceans; where sediment had then covered this thick layer of organic materials, which applied heat and cooked this layer of materials to form what we now extract from the ground as petroleum. The critical part of Alberta s past, present, and future depend on the drilling rigs on the prairies. Since 1914, when Alberta s first major oil field was discovered at Turner Valley, oil resources have been a very important facet of the provinces ways of life. Alberta s oil industry is an important part of the provinces economy. It has provided thousands of jobs in production, transportation, refining, distribution, and marketing. North Korea is one of the most literate countries in the world, with an astonishing average literacy rate of ninety nine percent.
Culture and Religion The North Korean culture is very similar to that of the south, over the last 60 years there have distinct differences with the north adapting more cultural influences from neighboring china. The government controls all books and painting. With these control the freedom to create art is limited and anything that is negative towards the government is punishable by death. One of the biggest cultural events in the north is the Mass Games. This event lasts for over two months; having events like dancing, choreograph singing and gymnastics. There have not been that many western cultural influences aloud to perform in North Korea. However recently with Kim Jung Un hired Dennis Rodmen to come in and help the national basketball team. This is what Rodman had to say about the young leader, He loves power. He loves control because others, you know dad and stuff like that, but he is just a great person. He s just a great guy. (LEBER) There was also a wrestling match held in the national capital that Rica Flair that drew over 195,000 people. With the north opening up a little however they are still very secretive and are not going to let the western influence in to their cultural without sever government constraints.

The Importance Of Lebanese Migration To Australia
The earliest recorded account of Lebanese people arriving to Australia was in the late 19th century to escape and flee from the economic adversity and religious and political discrimination under the Ottoman Empire. Victoria arose to see settlement from Lebanon after about the 1880s. It is tough to be precise about the amount of Lebanese settling as immigrants from Lebanon were variously confidential as Asian, Turkish or Syrian until the 1950s. Nonetheless, it is identified that countless primary migrants were single males or small clusters of males, eager to create money fast and possibly return home. Several of the early Lebanese settlers in Victoria labored as hawkers, purchasing their goods in Melbourne and vending them in rural regions.
A New Year Of Youth Group
To be honest, I had nervous expectations coming into a new year of youth group because I had just gotten out of an unsuccessful summer romance with a fellow sponsor that I volunteer at TIC with every week. However, my fears were unnecessary; the added expectations of this internship helped me focus less on the awkwardness of the failed relationship and focus more on my youthministry efforts. When I was a freshman sponsor, there was a Dordt senior sponsor who interned under the church and was paid by the church for her work. I always felt the shame of being under my processor s shadow of high expectations because I feel like I m not good enough to have New Life want to pay me. This may sound bad, but I actually had low expectations for my practicum this semester. I didn t expect it to be much different from the volunteering that I had already been doing with New Life for the past two years. I expected the general blanket statements of the goals that all youth workers expect: being able to grow in my relationships with studentsin order to help these teens grow in their relationship with God. If I ve learned anything from my experiences, though, I ve learned that you can never really expect anything in youth ministry. The biggest strength that I brought into the practicum was two years of prior experience with this youth group, which gave me the advantage of already being familiar with most of the people I worked with. I was given similar assignments and tasks by Ryan as
Why Did Tesla Win The Battle For Westinghouse
Tesla went to work for Westinghouse and helped him eventually win the battle for electrical power distribution in the US and elsewhere. Edison was hell bent to electrify everything with DC, but found that it was very inefficient and required more generating stations over shorter distances. But AC with its ability to be stepped up in voltage by a transformer could be transmitted efficiently over very long distances then stepped back down to usable levels where it was to be used. Tesla was a major player in building the first big power generating plant at Niagara Falls, NY. In any case, he was a major player in making AC the electrical power of choice. And despite his essential role and success, he never got rich like the Westinghouses and
Neural Crest Cells Essay
Neural crest cells are transient vertebral cell types, which form at the boundary between the neural plate and surface ectoderm. They are multipotent and able to migrate and differentiate into numerous derivatives resulting in them being referred to as the fourth germ layer . It is thought that the evolution of vertebrates is due to large scale genome duplications which occurred early in the vertebrate lineage. Research suggests that there were two rounds of genome duplication during early vertebrate evolution. However, there is an alternative research model which suggests that in stem vertebrates there was a single round of duplication, followed by lineage specific segmental duplications in cyclostomes and jawed vertebrates. Despite... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There is also evidence to suggest that the fate of neural crest cells depends upon their migratory path in the trunk which is dictated by somites. Cells which migrate early move ventrally and pass through the anterior half sclerotome, form the sensory ganglia. Cells which are more dorsal within the anterior sclerotome form the sensory neurons and glia of the dorsal root ganglia, partly due to signals which come from the neural tube. Alternatively, the neural crest cells which migrate late travel laterally between the somite and the ectoderm, forming melanocytes in amniotes. It is thought that the increased complexity in vertebrate neuroanatomy may stem from interactions between neural crest cells and other cell types. An example of this is the essential role of neural crest cells in the expansion of the head and formation of a true neck . Neural crest cells are thought to be crucial in multiple stages of cranial mesoderm development and secrete signals which depress myogenesis, consequently allowing the formation of cranial myofibres. Research has suggested that these distinct myogenic regulatory sub networks arose in early vertebrates. The formation of a true neck is a result of the pectoral girdle losing its attachment to the skull, and allowed tetrapods to colonise land as they could now move their head independent of limbs. Despite
Othello And Huaman Poma s Letter To A King
Throughout history there are multiple instances of people subjugating and diminishing the humanity of people because they are not of the same culture, religion opinion, etc. In Shakespeare s Othello, the effects of this type of othering can be seen from the perspective of the Venetians. This shows how people may rationalize their generalizations and beliefs about other people based off of their past experiences and knowledge. This is very different than Huaman Poma s Letter to a King where he works to explain that the Incans are not that different from the Spaniards, and that it is the Spanish colonist who are behaving barbarically and not the Incans.
During the time of Shakespeare, the Moors were best known for their strategic abilities in battle. This is why Othello is portrayed as a successful general in the Venetian army as opposed to any other position, it was considered an accepted role for Moors at that time. Because of this, Othello is treated a character the Venetians want to keep at arm s length, they need him around to win battles and wars for them, but they do not accept his presence or consider him to be truly one of them. This is evident in the way he is discussed and referred to throughout the book. In the first scene, he is only the Moor, and in later scenes and throughout the rest of the text he is referred to as the Moor Othello, and the Moorish general. When describing him to her father and the officials, even Desdemona calls him the Moor my
Argumentative Essay On Bilingualism
The term bilingualism refers to the ability of knowing and delivering more than one language. Throughout the years society has evolved and developed in such a way that the majority of the world is now multilingual. Once a up on a time bilingualism was considered harmful to one s development and IQ. This happened at the beginning of the century, haw ever since then we have conducted numerous researches studies that proves this wrong. Today bilingualism is often seen as a brain sharpening benefit, a condition that can protect and preserve cognitive function well into old age. Due to the mixture of culture people are now exposed to a variety of languages from which they benefit in different ways. Not only that they learn from each other the languagebut they adapt to a variety of traditions and cultures. For example as I visited London last summer I have accumulated a wide range of knowledge to do with Islamic culture and this includes rules on their day to day basis. As I became friends with a girl which was part of this religion I was told that muslims only eat halal food and no pork. Also once a year they have Ramadan and this means they cannot eat anything from... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It can be also encouraging because of its advantages and people have the initiative of accumulating more and more informations. In addition, being a bilingual person can be helpful in finding good and well payed job. Nowadays this is an important factor in our lives so a CV which reveals this capacity can sometimes make miracles. Society needs reliable people in which they can trust in order to prosper. Race, Religion, And Identity Through The Events Of An...
The Pulitzer prize winning play Disgraced explores the difficult topics of race, religion, and identity through the events of an explosive and unforgettable dinner party. The tension in this play is electric and masterfully intertwined with snippets of comic relief. Combine these elements with a set of accomplished actors and the wonderful location of the Goodman Theatrein Chicago, and you have an excellent thought provoking and entertaining play. During the performance, I paid specific attention to the actingskills of the performers, the arrangement of the set, the lighting techniques, and the directorial choices, most of which added to the performance as a whole.
The actors in the play were very skillful, and I found that most of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Furthermore, I found this comedic relief to be very integral to the play as a whole. Without it, audience members might feel uncomfortable because of the prevailing serious, dark tone of the play. Also, all of the actors made smart choices about when to raise their voice, and when not to. This play deals with the serious topics of race, religion, and politics, heated topics that people tend to have emotional responses to. With this is mind, this play could have easily become a screaming match, each character yelling louder than the other to get their point across or convey their anger. Instead, I noticed that each actor made calculated choices about when to truly raise their voice. For example, when Isaac asked Amir if he felt pride on September 11, Isaac was not yelling. Instead, he was speaking very deliberately with a low voice and a grave tone. This choice conveyed anger and disgust effectively without yelling. Conversely, when Amir questioned Isaac about feeling pride when Israel had a military success, Isaac burst out yelling and criticizing Amir s point of view. The actor s choice conveyed that Amir had pushed too many buttons. Isaac could no longer restrain the intense anger hiding behind his guest at a party façade.
The arrangement of the set also added to my enjoyment of the play. To expand, the characters did not utilize the whole stage, specifically the downstage space. Instead, the
