NCAA

Thesis: The Bowl Championship Series (BCS) formula has been used to determine the top twenty five teams in NCAA Division I college since 1998. Many think this system is inadequate and should be changed. The alternative is a playoff system that would give more of the top teams a chance to be named the NCAA football National Champion.

Brad Edwards, a writer for ESPN.com, has this to say about the computer system: Though this may be the weakest part of the (BCS) equation, it can still make a difference. Last year, pollsters eventually overlooked Wisconsin s loss to Cincinnati, but the computers didn t. The result: the Badgers had an average computer ranking of 7.71 despite ranking fourth in both polls. 7.71 is the average of where the team is in the rankings among the top twenty five teams in the nation according to the seven computers.

The second part of the Bowl Championship Series formula is the two polls. One comes from the associated press and the other comes from coaches around the league. The Associated Press polls are organized by a number of different newspapers, magazines, and media. While the NCAA football coaches put together the Coaches poll. This is probably the most critical element of the four because it has only two subsets (the media and coaches polls) to be averaged (Edwards). The polls are run similarly to the computers; the two ranking are simply averaged together. The impact held by each poll is greater than that of any one computer or any one opponent. It is no coincidence that the top two poll teams have played for the national title in both years of the

The Red Baron Is A Film Directed

The Red Baron is a film directed by Nikolai Muellerschoen and produced by Niama Film which was released on April 10, 2008 but wasn t released in the US until March 19, 2010. This movie was based on a legendary German pilot who fought and died in World War 1. This pilot was known as Manfred von Richthofen. I believe that this film was nicely put together, the plot kept its viewers engaged and wanting to see what would happen next. In this essay I will be giving a brief explanation on the film and why it is or is not accurate and whether the producer did it on purpose or by mistake. At the beginning of the movie which takes place in 1906, Manfred is still a child. As a kid Manfred is out hunting with his younger brother Lothar von Richthofen and younger cousin, Wolfram Freiherr von Richthofen. Suddenly the sound of an airplane flying nearby flies over them. Amazed, Manfred jumps on his horse and follows the airplane with his arms spread out as though they were the wings of a plane themselves. This foreshadows him becoming a pilot in the future. After this scene the movies jumps ten years into the future which happens to be during World War 1. After the ten years have passed Manfred is a Lieutenant and is serving as a fighter pilot for the Imperial German Air Service. Lieutenant Richthofen is shown flying along the Western front where they drop a wreath over the funeral of an Allied pilot. On his way back home with his friends and fellow pilots Werner Voss, Lieutenant

Analysis Of David Brooks s Hurricane Katrina

The essay that David brooks wrote about hurricane Katrina is a sarcastic bitter piece taking jabs at government, who he blames for the catastrophe. Specifically, he pointed out their plan of action toward the hurricane they knew was coming. Many from New Orleans were angry that the government did little to help them from this dangerous storm.

In his essay brooks stated, Katrina was the most anticipated natural disaster in American history, and still government managed to fail at every level. The plan was supposedly so well planned out, but didn t prevent all this disaster from happening, and brooks mocks it several times using sarcasm and over exaggeration as his main weapon.

Statistics show that 75% of the African Americans in New Orleans were affected compared to the 15% of African Americans in the Biloxi Gulfport metropolitan area (Cutter and Gall, 5). It also states, The calamitous combination of insured development certainly accounts for much of hurricane katrina s damage, specifically in New Orleans. All levels of government failed to do their part, which includes state and local government.

The author, Brooks, is bitter about how the whole situation was handled. The citizens were essentially left to defend for themselves instead of getting the support they needed. Obviously, the government could and should have made a more efficient plan to rescue and protect its citizens from a huge disaster. Because they failed to do so, they have to pay both the monetary

The Depletion Of The Bee Population

While often only appreciated for their honey, honeybees are responsible for pollinating about one third of the food that the human population consumes. Bees provide us with fruits, berries, nuts, vegetables, coffee, and so much more. This is why the depletion of the bee population beginning in 2006 was, and as it continues, so concerning. The term Colony Collapse Disorder refers to a phenomenon in which worker bees vanish from the hive, leaving the queen and larvae unattended, and thus the bee colony ceases to function and collapses. This is happening throughout the United States at an alarming rate, and while one distinct cause for CCD has yet to be found, scientists have narrowed it down to a few possible reasons. Honeybees are social insects that live in eusocial communities in which the bees partake in complex activities and live in well organized groups. There are three types of bees that exist within the hive: the queen, the drone, and the worker. Each colony has one queen bee, whose primary function is reproduction. She also produces pheremones which represses the ovarian development in the worker bees which unifies the colony and maintains her position as queen, until a new one takes over. Drones are the male bees of the colony, and their sole purpose within the hive is for reproduction. Worker bees perform all of the duties to maintain the hive, including building cells, care for and feed the young, care for the queen, handle nectar to produce honey, and guard the

Literary Devices In The Charge Of The Light Brigade

In times of war, soldiers must surpass obstacles and be ready to face challenges. Witnessing the valiant efforts of these men who throw their lives on the line instills an insurmountable sense of pride in the hearts of spectators. Both Lord Alfred Tennyson s poem and Richard Caton Woodville Jr. s illustration entitled The Charge of the Light Brigade incorporate literary terms to express their feeling of pride towards the Light Brigade. Tennyson exhibits this by using repetition to signify the danger of fighting in battle, in addition to using imagery to help the reader imagine how terrifying war is while setting a respectful tone. Woodville shows pride through the dangerous setting, through the symbolism signifying the danger of fighting... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... First of all, the artist uses setting. His addition of depressions in the ground and use of color scheme are examples of this. He deliberately uses the depressions to indicate how dangerous the environment is, and is proud that even though the men saw cannons being fired and bullets shooting at them, they still go through with their job. They understand that it is their duty to fight for their country no matter what obstacles they may face. The warm colors of the backdrop add onto this feeling because it indicates the artist is content with how the men were willing to put themselves forward. Symbolism is another literary term used by Woodville. For instance, this is shown when the men on horses hold up their sabres. The fact that the soldiers are pointing them towards their enemies show how they are not afraid, aware that they do not stand a chance against the other sides artillery. The artist s feeling is revealed here because although they know that they will be defeated, the men hold their weapons up high, continuing to charge and fight to the best of their abilities. They are courageous and ready to endure the pain. The most important literary device Woodville s uses to convey his feeling of pride is imagery. The poet shows this through the charging motion of the men on their horses. The soldiers lean forward and hold their weapons high riding towards their opponents their courage. Instead

George Berkeley Essay

George Berkeley was an Irish philosopher. His philosophical beliefs were centered on one main belief, the belief that perception is the basis for existence. In doing so, he rejected the notion of a material world in favor of an immaterial world.

Berkeley felt that all we really know about an object we learn from our perception of that object. He recognized that in the materialist s view the real object is independent of any perceiver s perception. The pen on my desk would exist, whether or not I was in the room to see it or have a sensory experience of it in some way. Berkeley rejected this idea. He realized that knowledge is limited to perception. In this realization, he postulated that everything we know we learned through ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

What, then, happens to an object when no one can perceive it anymore? If no one sees the tree and no one has a sensory experience of it, does it cease to exist? This idea suggests that objects pop in and out of reality when not being perceived by any human perceiver. Berkeley argues from an immaterialist standpoint and says that objects do not act in such a manner. He tries to save his theory by saying that the tree does in fact exist because God is the continuous perceiver of all things and therefore God always perceives the tree.

This is an illegitimate appeal to save his philosophy. By saving his theory in this manner he shoots himself in the foot. ; If God cannot be perceived, and if to be is to be perceived, then God cannot possibly exist. Although the existence of God can be inferred through the classical ontological argument, doing so scuttles his immaterial world. If one can have knowledge through inference, then one can infer the existence of a material world.

Berkeley s answer to the existence of the tree in the quad is not convincing because his argument is circular. If something must be perceived in

The Consequences And Effects Of Buckthorn And Its Factors...

Abstract

Buckthorn (Rhamnus spp.), an invasive shrub that is found throughout Ohio, the Midwest, and most of the eastern United States, has a rapid growth rate and is able to withstand conditions that most plants cannot. Aside from that, the shrub is able to change soil properties that can have devastating consequences on management. Buckthorn also has an advantage over native species, because of the early onset of the shrub; the early arrival of buckthorn leaves allows the plant to gain more than a third of its carbon gain in the same time period that natives are still bare. In soils where the shrub has invaded, there is a higher percentage of nitrogen and carbon, with nitrogen levels often double that of levels in soils that have not been invaded. In soils where buckthorn has invaded, there is altered nitrogen mineralization rates, a higher pH, and higher soil moisture than in soils without. Due to the fact that buckthorn leaves are high in nitrogen and they drop earlier in the season compared to native species, microarthopods often colonize the litter before any other leaf litter. The increase of microarthopods leads to an increase in decomposition rates, which can have significant consequences on the soil, including altering the fertility and collapsing the soil arthropod community.

Introduction

Invasive species are considered one of the major causes of biodiversity loss, second only to habitat loss (Heneghan et al 2006), and some invasive species have the ability to

C. S. Lewis Dream

If you could experience or accomplish anything in life, what would it be? Would it be to learn a new language or would it be to spend as much time as possible with your family. C. S. Lewis, a famous British novelist, once said, you are never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dream. Around the world people dream of a better future, and new experiences. To be a professional soccer player has always been an ambition of mine since I was a little boy, and I would savor the taste if I realized it. Additionally, I would adore to travel the world, and explore the world s adventures from skydiving in Fox Glacier, New Zealand to fishing in the Amazon. Finally, attending a beneficial and magnificent collage would be a great pleasure. In
