At the beginning of Franz Kafka s The Metamorphosis, Gregor becomes a giant beetle, loses his abilities as a human, such as his ability to communicate and work. Gregor s transformation explores the theme of alienation. Through the attitude of people around him and himself, Gregor shows he is isolated from his body, his mind and his social relationships: he neither connects to society nor his family. Through Gregor s tragic experience, Kafka is fighting against alienation. He also criticizes the numbness and apathy in family relationship for creating hopelessness and loneliness. The alienation of Gregor s own body makes him more like thinking than before. However, the transformation brings him with loneliness and inner struggle. Once Gregor... But not long, when the mother goes into Gregor s room, she is scared, screams a lot and hoarse voice (31). Grete Gregor s sister, shows the most caring and sympathy to her brother. Grete takes care of her brother because she wants to show her ability as a family member: she is an adult now and can make contributions to her family. She does not want to be like Gregor; she wants to get admire from her parents, and get rid of becoming alienation. Gregor thinks he remained intimate with his sister alone (28). He also thinks about his secret plan, which is sending his sister to study at the Conservatorium(28). But Grete is the first one who betrays her brother: We must get rid of it (35). Gregor and Grete are reflecting Jesus s and Judas imagery. Judas betrayed Jesus for money, Grete betrayed Gregor for the approval from her family. Gregor s father, a retired civil servant, always treats Gregor badly. He uses apples to hit Gregor(31). One of the apple (stick) in his body as a visible reminder (32). The apple symbolizes new knowledge in Genesis. And because of the apple, people lost their paradise. For Gregor, those apples his father throws at him symbolize the impact that from different cultures and knowledge. He can not accept the
7.In matters of attitude, what might the average American doctor learn from a Hmong txiv neeb (shaman)? What might the txiv neeb learn from the doctor?
According to the Hmong culture a shaman helps to cure the soul. A doctor cures biological problems. As we learn throughout this class there is a difference between an illness and a disease. An illness or a disease may have the absence of the other. In most cases an illness can be present without a disease. In the case of Lia there was a presence of both Illness and disease. If txiv neb and the American doctor would have balanced their practices and learned from each other this would have affected the way the Lees thought about medicine. I believe that faith plays an important role in Lia s case if the doctors would have understood the way that txiv neeb thought and vice versa the lees would have trusted American doctors and medicine more. Learning from txiv neeb would have also helped the American doctors in other cases when treating Hmong by understanding their culture. It is important for the doctors to understand the Hmong culture and specifically the way that a txiv neeb works because in Merced a third of the population were Hmong and used a tixv neeb as their main source of healing. Were you surprised by the quality of care and affection given to Lia by her foster parents? How did Lia s foster parents feel about Foua and Nao Kao? Was foster careultimately to Lia s benefit or detriment? I was very surprised by the
From the beginning of time, humans have been developing physically and mentally into the brightest and most successful beings on earth. We ve discovered lands, invented medicines and technology, and endured through catastrophic episodes. Everything we use in our daily lives has evolved from its original state. Some life changing events occurred last year, or maybe centuries ago. Most people couldn t care less how, why, when, and where occasions were taken place and think learning about the pastis useless, but I have to disagree. As a student who has been taking social studies classes since the 1st grade, I believe learning about historical people and events that have shaped the world into being what it is today, is important. Historyis very important to me because it dwells within the past and tells its events so thoroughly that you can almost imagine yourself living in that period. Plus, knowing the tragedies and mistakes made in the past had and still helps us build a fair and just lifestyle. Studying history gives people the answers they ve been wondering about, such as curiosity of how and why World War II is an unforgettable piece of the past we all know about.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I ve always loved learning about the Salem Witch Trials because it s fun to believe that witches, these supernatural beings, once roamed around the Earth. World War II is another appealing event that I m excited to learn about this year. The fact that Jews who did nothing bad were locked in concentration camps and tortured/experimented on, regardless of their age and mental/physical state, is so intriguing and puzzling to me. How were the Nazis able to live with themselves when their job was jailing and murdering innocent people? It s something that no one knows the answer
In the New Testament, more specifically in the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus ushers in a new way of thinking centered around Earthly suffering and the reward of Heaven. John the Baptist, a man of much faith, plays an important role in representing this theme; in Chapter 14 of the Gospel of Matthew, John, faces Earthly Suffering when he is unjustly put in jail and killed. Though the New Testament is an elaboration of the Old Testament, it carries different themes and teachings. Noticing this shift, Italian painter Michaelangelo Merisi da chose to depict the scene of John the Baptists death, elaborating on the bibleverse and using his dramatic painting in order to provoke more emotion from his audience.
The beheading of John the Baptist in Matthew Chapter 14, though it shares themes from the Old Testament, is an example of how the New Testament differs from its precursor by utilizing the theme of Earthly suffering. King Herod arrests John the Baptist after John proclaims that it is unlawful of Herod to be with his wife, who some texts believe was his brother s wife. Previously in the Old Testament, there have been stories of wrongful imprisonment, and this story makes use of the same theme. John should not be in Jail, but many times jail has been used to prove a lesson. Furthermore, though Herod imprisoned John and wanted to kill him, he feared the ... Although I have been drawing for a majority of my life, it wasn t until recently when I realized just how much I love art. Art was my method of self expression and creativity, creating a doorway for my imagination to explain its intricacies. I love art because of its ability to express emotions, moods, and stories.
Stories are a large aspect of the artist in me. As someone with an extremely vivid imagination, stories are my way of expressing thoughts, coping with problems, and bringing a bit of adventure into a routine life. RWBY inspired me to take a more fantastical approach to my story, building a world with its own laws, countries, and history. For centuries, the African American community has faced the oppression of those that do not understand or accept their different culture and morals. The exploitation of African American citizens has been documented through a plethora of works of poetry and various other art forms, but each represents the hardships in a different way due to the different experiences and perceptions of the authors. Interaction in the civil rights movement, in particular, played a large role in the sculpting of poet Maya Angelous work. Angelou s personal experience allowed for her to connect with other African Americans and to learn how the travesties of persecution and racism affected them. Throughout her poem Still I Rise , Maya Angelou exhibits the determination of African Americans to overcome the adversities brought on by the oppressive nature of society in the years leading up to the civil rights movement. The repetition of variations of the poem s title reflects the persistence of Angelou and fellow African Americans when it came to racism and oppression. The fact that Angelou had faced oppression herself, becomes clear through the repeated statement because she references not only herself with the pronouns me and I , but also makes it possible for other African Americans to fill that spot and feel the empowerment for themselves. Angelou published Still I Rise in the year 1978, which fell after the civil rights movement, that had lasted until 1969. The civil rights movement was aimed to break the racial barriers that had come about in American society, especially after slavery had been abolished. The poem was written in a time where the oppressive climate of the south [was] still [a] central concern (Bloom 213). Angelou herself was extremely involved with the civil rights movement and its leaders. She believed it to be important to stand up and do anything that she was able to do for her own. It is said that when an artist experiences things first hand, it is not uncommon for them to use the underlying themes of the events in their work (Hagen). In the case of Maya Angelou, she used her experiences of oppression and perseverance before and during the civil rights movement to construct Still I Rise .
In the book, Race Across Alaska, by Libby Riddles, Libby is an up and coming musher who has no sponsor and no money. However, she takes her love of adventure and the sport to the Iditarod and ends up winning. The first few years, after moving to Alaska, were hard for Libby. She had moved to Alaska from Wisconsin when she was 16 with her brother and decided to become a professional musher. Due to this she s paid very little and her track record was not great, so she was forced to live in a trailer with no heating or electricity. She could only eat the food she hunted. After years of living like this and training Libby decides to race in the Iditarod, an 11,049 mile race .through the tundra, for her third time in 1975, and she ended up winning.... Due to its length, tradition, and difficulty, it is known as the last great race on earth . If Libby had just raced and made it through even if she came in dead last she would have survived, but she won showing that she had gone above and beyond thus thriving. The race takes a lot of hard work and training which is exactly what Libby did, she borrowed, raised, and trained her own dogs these same dogs led her to victory, in the texts libby says sometimes when a musher can t see do to snow she has to rely on her dogs to know, with them I also felt like I could (riddles 11). She didn t just do that, but she had enough courage to enter a race three times, knowing that no women had ever won. Although the distance is an unbelievable one of the biggest challenges is the weather. Besides the fact that the woods and mountains of Alaskaare subzero, many mushers have experienced fast winds, blizzards, and even rain during the event, and usually, prevail but in 1875 during the Iditarod s a huge blizzard hit and many of the other mushers joined at the ruby ridge(a checkpoint) to wait it out, but Libby made the bold decision to continue. Libby spent days in the arctic cold and even had to give up two dogs who were worn and or injured by the ice. Not only that, but there were times Libby was unable to see where she was going the snow was such a whirlwind. She eventually crossed the finish line, making history and paving the way for many other future female mushers. She was the only musher willing to bare it all she wasn t going to let one blizzard stop her from her dream of winning the last great
Education shall be directed to the full development of the human personality and to the strengthening of respect for human rights... promote understanding, tolerance and friendship among all... (The United Nations, 1948). As emphasised by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, education is an inalienable right, and until it is proven that a student will not benefit from or is not stimulated by being in school, it must be assumed that they are gaining some value from the experience. Indoctrinated within Universal Designfor Learning (UDL) framework is the need for teachers to shift from primarily hosting students with additional educational needs, to extensively engaging them in a fruitful education. Under the principles of Universal Design for Learning, educators venture to create these meaningful learning experiences as a result of employing innovative educational mechanisms that ensure the participation of everyone. This essay aims to explore the invaluable effect of incorporating the elements of Universal Design for Learning within educational environments, with specific reference to the English curriculum.
