her movie reviewLike that film, this is a story about a character that is fractured and hurt by one relationship and faces the impossible task of fulfilling that void with something that is inevitably unsustainable. The whole film is both sophisticated and immensely artistic, which to me is the perfect recipe for success. This takes him into the outbreak of World War I, which threatens to tear the “Fellowship” apart. Theodore Twombly (Joaquin Phoenix) is going through a divorce to his childhood sweetheart, Catherine (Rooney Mara), a successful writer. We can honestly say that we experienced what Theodore experienced and this in fact is something rare. It is a sweet-natured and melancholy film, beautifully directed, that manages to be satirical about love in a digital, distracted age without losing its heartfelt quality. This film perfectly depicts this concept through deliberate manipulation of color scheme, blurred background and tight subject framing. Hilarious scenes of Samantha’s attempts to woo and impress Theodore are affectionate sentiments of a woman trying to hold on to what gives value to her life as well as a child trying to learn the ins and outs of the world for the first time. It is also a surprise in fact because what seems to be a plot on human-AI relationships turns out to be more than that - it is a look into a deeper human psyche. We are a long way, though, from the world of Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan. He is in almost every scene, and pretty much front and center the entire time. In Her, by contrast, he brings lightness, humour and an unexpected sensitivity to Theodore. When Theodore shyly admits to dating a computer, it’s met with an intrigued “Really. Their scenes where they talk and share their experiences are often among the best of the picture. Yet as you watch Spike Jonze’s latest film Her, you realize that it is about so much more. It explores the ramifications of human interaction- including our search for existential validation by means of another person as well as the the emotional capabilities of artificial intelligence and the human mind. The highwaisted beltless pants of the future alone make this film worth seeing. In effect, then, Theodore is falling in love with himself. The machine that Theodore purchases, which names itself Samantha (voiced by Scarlett Johansson), quickly assists him with menial tasks such as organizing his email and reminding him of events. It is really a plus that the film's unique orange glow give some added oomph to its visuals and cinematogrpahy.

The film has already taken out the Golden Globe for Best Screenplay and is nominated for five Academy Awards including the much coveted Best Picture. He’s got vices, but also the best intentions, so it’s easy to get behind his pursuit of love and companionship, and that leaves the viewer wide open to accept Samantha. Overall though, this misstep is forgivable considering your given a deep psychological and technical look on what love and relationships are. As Samantha and Theodore’s relationship grows increasingly intimate, so too, paradoxically, does their distance. Joaquin Phoenix here gave probably his career-best performance. I feel it’s a setting not many films utilize often enough and is the most effective in conveying more negatively-focused emotion. The actor has been one of my favorites since I saw him in his first major role as the villain Commodus in Gladiator, and has continued to impress me with role after role. But we buy into the illusion just as eagerly as he does. Independently owned and operated publications like Slant have been hit hard in recent years, but we’re committed to keeping our content free and accessible—meaning no paywalls or fees. The film succeeds as a human drama because the director finds the right tone. Save for the few moments when we view this world from Samantha’s perspective, almost every single visual is of Theodore and often of Theodore alone yet Jonez and Hoytema manage to keep every single shot telling, interesting and staggeringly natural. Contrastingly, as humans grow further away from each other and become more reliant on technology, will we forget personal uniqueness and that people’s desires are different from our own. Now more than ever, we need your support to continue supplying Austin with independent, free press. It wouldn’t take very much tweaking to turn the film into yet another dystopian sci-fi fable about the potential perils of artificial intelligence. Samantha acts as a close friend to Theodore, and they spend so much time together that they both begin to question their relationship with one another and become willing to experiment further. Jonze says so much with his film while telling a touching story that never feels heavy handed. Theodore will develop a romantic relationship stronger than he even had with. We feel every awkward moment, every sadness and every happiness that Theodore goes through. The only difference of their relationship was her lack of a physical body.

But, the more she learns, the more she becomes her own person and that conjures quite the conflict. Read his answers to our Movie Love Questionnaire here. This voice performance is fantastic, very believable, very nuanced and highly emotive. The third party sex scene plays out very awkwardly whereas the realization that Samantha has many other acquaintances is truly heartbreaking. But the genius of the movie lies in its central romance, so beautifully developed and oh so complex. Scarlett Johansson, who replaced all of Samantha Morton’s original voice work, makes a strong case for Oscar nominated voice acting. I enjoyed the use of low-lighting and nighttime scenes in this film, as we all can relate to late nights spent ruminating over aspects of our lives we have little-to-no control over and cannot change. It is so colorful, so drenched in sun and lighting, so very romantic in many of its usually outdoors sequences that it truly is a treat for the eyes. The whole emphasis on physical bodies and the idea of the metaphysical is well touched upon, but the highlight is comparing this relationship to any other regular relationship, and seeing where they are the same, and where they differ. But I really liked that the film ended on a sadder, but still hopeful note. It is really a plus that the film's unique orange glow give some added oomph to its visuals and cinematogrpahy. What Theodore suffers from is more like a prolonged funk, brought on by the breakup of his marriage. Jed Chua has been writing about movies for more than a decade. On the one hand, what Theodore sees (or at least hears) in Samantha is a reflection of himself. After Star Wars and more recently Avatar, there has been a tendency to build computer generated worlds but only fill them with aliens and laser guns. His job, at which he is extremely skilled, is writing love letters for other people. The film succeeds as a human drama because the director finds the right tone. All of these experiences would inspire Tolkien to write his famous Middle-earth novels.” It sounds like a real treat for film, literature, and Middle Earth fans. The darker implications in his story are self-evident. Who would have predicted that one of the more aching screen romances in recent years would be between a man and his computer.

Her Movie Review

The actor has been one of my favorites since I saw him in his first major role as the villain Commodus in Gladiator, and has continued to impress me with role after role. I feel it’s a setting not many films utilize often enough and is the most effective in conveying more negatively-focused emotion. I started this blog and review site in April 2010. There are no hulking robots, deep space transports or overabundance of ultramodern technology, but rather mildly modified elements of the present that have clearly been changed to facilitate a more serene lifestyle. The whole emphasis on physical bodies and the idea of the metaphysical is well touched upon, but the highlight is comparing this relationship to any other regular relationship, and seeing where they are the same, and where they differ. He can guess what people are feeling by their words and body language. The sincerity with how this beautiful, slightly long film is made, and the quality of the performances, are suggestive of a filmmaker who knows very personally what they are talking about. It is a sweet-natured and melancholy film, beautifully directed, that manages to be satirical about love in a digital, distracted age without losing its heartfelt quality. He spends his nights watching or writing about movies. And the emotion that Phoenix exudes while interacting with nothing but a handheld device is magnificent. It is so colorful, so drenched in sun and lighting, so very romantic in many of its usually outdoors sequences that it truly is a treat for the eyes. Their scenes where they talk and share their experiences are often among the best of the picture. It is a future where people depend on technology, and everyone seems to wear earpieces as they hurry around their busy existence appearing to talk to themselves. Samantha acts as a close friend to Theodore, and they spend so much time together that they both begin to question their relationship with one another and become willing to experiment further. Joaquin Phoenix has already been nominated for a Golden Globe in the Best Leading Actor category, and I would be shocked if he doesn’t get an Oscar nomination for his brilliant performance. The technology in it is phenomenally depicted due to grounded in reality VFX, but the camera movements are quite inspired whereas some of the imagery is very effective at conveying emotion. With great sadness, this strikingly ephemeral satire regards the way we

ve become tethered to technology as being possibly past a point of no return, but with intense curiosity, it also asks us to never forget that we’re still very much alive. This film is unique, in that it effectively portrays the personality of a disembodied main character through consistent representation of Samantha as Theodore’s love interest. Theodore's path to Samantha, the operating system with the voice of Scarlett Johansson, involves a blind date with a gorgeous but touchy and insecure woman (Olivia Wilde, mercurial and striking) and a lot of blissfully easygoing debriefing with Theodore's platonic-ish soul mate, the Adams character, rendered with unusual emotional transparency and the lightest of touches. Again, notice how blurred out the background is in the shot below, expressing to me the ability of Theodore and Samantha’s bond to block out the rest of the world.

His life takes a bizarre turn when he is introduced to Samantha (voiced by Scarlett Johansson), a highly sophisticated, verbalised operating system, put together from the DNA of her creators. Again, notice how blurred out the background is in the shot below, expressing to me the ability of Theodore and Samantha’s bond to block out the rest of the world. It’s sometimes hilarious (how could it not be?) but the mood is mostly melancholic and dream-like because no one here is playing this as an extended joke. The film succeeds as a human drama because the director finds the right tone. And as if on cue, when Samantha reveals her fondness for another OS, modeled after the philosopher Alan Watts, and inexplicably shuts down, he misses her, and his pathetic anxiety feels no different than that of a social-media obsessive freaking out at the sight of a “Twitter is over capacity” page. As Samantha seems to acquire consciousness, some might say agency, he begins to push her away, perhaps how he did his future ex-wife, Catherine (Rooney Mara), and his fundamental inability to love a woman, whether she comes in human or binary form, is exposed. Never once do you see her onscreen, yet her voice says it all. Heck, its so good I almost cried when Theodore said goodbye to Samantha. In the upcoming Tolkien movie, the man will be played by Nicholas Hoult, whom is best known for Mad Max: Fury Road and Hank McCoy in the most recent X-Men movies. If there’s one thing that keeps me from extolling as. The whole emphasis on physical bodies and the idea of the metaphysical is well touched upon, but the highlight is comparing this relationship to any other regular relationship, and seeing where they are the same, and where they differ. Theodore’s OS names itself Samantha, and “it” swiftly becomes a “she” in both Theodore and the audience’s perception. (Samantha is voiced by Scarlett Johansson, cozy but with a kick, like toasted marshmallow and spiked hot chocolate.) At first, the OS functions like a digital life coach, cleaning up Theodore’s hard drive and getting him to meetings on time, but as Samantha sponges up data and experience, she rapidly evolves and tangles with the idea of her own personhood. His ability to ask his earpiece about its day and have it respond to him in a knowing, understanding manner is comical but not farfetched. Still, they remain fondly intact as Theodore goes through his farcical daily routine. Joaquin Phoenix here gave probably his career-best performance. It really is wonderfully shot, and the colours and lighting are excellent. Johansson gives a powerfully emotional performance throughout the film, making what would normally appear to be an odd interaction seem so natural.
