Use Of Primary And Secondary Sources

At first glance this book may seemed like just a collection of letters, songs, and inventory lists, but shortly after entering the first chapter it was abundantly clear that the title is very misleading. Laundry list s and love songs are but a minuscule, compared to the ample supply of translations that the author Andrea McDowell has implemented into this collection. Village Life in Ancient Egyptwas published in 1999 by Oxford University Press, A well known source of educational publications. McDowell uses a small variety, but by no means lacking in quantity, of primary and secondary sources, the majority of which consisted of translations from either unearthed ostraca, or the less common papyrus. This Review will discuss the structure of the book, McDowell s use of primary and secondary sources, and how she gets her argument across. This text contains an abundance of information regarding, roughly every aspect of village life during the New Kingdom (1570 1070 B.C) in ancient Egypt. The book is arranged into six chapters including an introduction and an Epilogue. The chapters are: family and friends; daily life; religion; education, learning, and literature; law and work on the royal tomb. Each Chapter is introduced with a brief description of its contents and how the aged texts were implemented. Within each chapter are sub headers that describe itself along with its relation to the chapter. Within each sub header are the translated Egyptian texts. Each translated piece

The Importance of Early Childhood Education and What it...

At what age should I enroll my children in school? Why are we pushing our children at such an early age? I just want my children to be children. Will Pre K really prepare them for Kindergarten? These are all questions that parents ask themselves as their children start approaching school age. Parents have to face the decision about whether or not to send their children to pre k before kindergarten, or if they will just send them to kindergarten. Some parents do not realize just how important early childhood education is. Early Childhood Education begins at birth. The first stage, birth to age three, focuses on skill development, which includes tasks such as sitting, walking, feeding themselves, toilet training, and enough ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The next step is four year old Kindergarten. Here, parents still have the options of Head Start or church /privately run preschools, but also have the option of a public school program. Through different funding, many public schools have started offering four year old preschools. In my district, the four year old program is funded through Title 1. Title funds are awarded to schools based on the number of students that receive free and reduced meals at school. There are three title funded pre k classrooms in my district, which are free for families. In order to be placed in these classrooms, families must meet certain criteria such as low income or a low score on the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test (PPVT). We also offer a paid class for families that do not meet the criteria for the free class. In this class, families pay $175.00 a month. Many preschools, like Head Start, are socially based. In our district, our pre k is academically based. We go by the Common Core Early Learning Standards for classrooms serving four year old children. The pre k Common Core standards are very similar to the kindergarten Common Core standards. My pre k classroom is centered on a quote by an unknown author: Play, Learn, and Grow Together. Children learn by doing. There should be a lot of playing in Early Childhood classes. The following is my classroom schedule.

In March 1999, John Lacey and the management team at the Loewen Group, Inc., had to decide what course of action to take in light of the company s imminent financial difñculties. On January 22,1999, Lacey, a renowned turnaround specialist, was appointed chairman of Loewen, the

The Importance Of Prisons In The Prison System

Summary

The United States currently holds around 2 million prisoners, or around 25% of the world s prison population (Prisonstudies.org). Furthermore, a large percentage of American prisoners are from minority groups, and many others are charged for petty crimes such as non violent drug offenses. People convicted of low level crimes experience the same kind of treatment as what a violent convict would reasonably receive. These convicts tend to be deprived from basic rights, get into gang fights on a daily basis and are emotionally deprived.

Across the world, different countries treat their prisoners differently. There are some countries, like Brazil, that completely deprive prisoner s rights. On the other hand, prisoners in Norway are given VIP treatment to be able to integrate themselves to society once again. It is unfortunate that these extreme differences exist across the globe. Unlike Brazil and Norway, America has average if not, below average treatment in prisons.

The correctional prison system spends a great deal of money on its system; it is greater than the school budget (Kelly). Why is the US government investing more in its prisons rather than in its educational facilities? In addition, the most notorious prisons stuff as many prisoners into the tiny cells. The conditions are merely inhumane, and the government keeps funding these correctional institutions. From our research, we have learned that American prisoners deserve better resources for them to become

Biography Of Maya Angelou

A Phenomenal Woman : Maya Angelou

Maya Angelou was a woman of many names. She was born in St. Louis, Missouri in 1928. Her father, Bailey Johnson, was a doorman and a naval dietician. Her mother, Vivian Johnson, was a professional gambler, registered nurse, and owned a rooming house and bar. As a young girl she endured abuse and trauma that eventually led her to stop talking, for six years she believed that her voice had killed the man who had attacked her but through writing and performing, she found her voice. I am Maya Angelou, whatever that means to whomever it means.

Angelou wrote in several categories of writing and performing as a poet, author, scriptwriter, actress, and composer. Angelou had a voice that demanded to be heard. a voice to all that had been quieted and\or overlooked. Her work brought her acclaim and awards from all over the place. She even read at Bill Clinton s very first inauguration and was given the Presidential Medal of Freedom by Barack Obama. Over the years ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... First she married Tosh Angelos in 1950 only to be divorced two years later, then married Paul Du Feu in 1973 but soon divorced in 1981. She only had one child in 1945, writer, Guy Johnson. Angelou died May 28, 2014 at eighty six years old in her North Carolina home. The legacy of this powerful woman is lived on by Her son, Guy, and many friends and admirers. In my opinion, Phenomenal Woman is one of her greatest contributions to the literary world. It shows that you don t have to be a certain type of woman to be amazing. Angelou manages to convey this message by pinpointing the things that she found made her unique and desirable. She found out just how phenomenal she was years after she had thought of herself as ugly and incapable of being loved. Her life was not aways glamorous and phenomenal, and seeing the way she was able to work through it and realize how amazing she is an amazing thing we don t see very

Family Dynamics And Social Values

Family Dynamics and Social Values in Race Religion as Factors of Domestic Violence Much of the ethnic and religious ideologies existent in numerous communities today are the result of history s shaping the societies into what they are today, particularly during the earlier stages of the development of a religion or the peak of an era. The principles and ideals formed then have gone through alterations with time, as cultures have merged since their foundations. While some views and philosophies have been virtually discarded, common beliefs pertaining to order, power, and manner within a family have been preserved and passed down through generations upon generations. Such morals often span to the extent of violence, especially where... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These viewpoints reinforce the attitude that violence is a husband s right and that the woman is to blame. The findings of this study are related to studies in other Asian countries that share similar traditional attitude towards women (Weingourt et al. 107).

The concept that women are merely a portion of a man s assets and should be treated as though they are material goods provides the notion that a man has every right to do with the women he owns as he wishes whether he treats them as queens, as commoners, or as slaves is his and only his decision to make. In this context, where women are treated like children does not radiate a positive opinion on children, as they do not have proper power or control over their own lives. In other words, women and children were both scene as dependent, and, while a son could grow up to establish himself and become independent, a daughter would have to remain depended throughout her entire life. Thus, we can presume that, if women and children were considered the lower orders of the structure of a Japanese family, then adult men were considered the head honchos. A study on family violence towards married Cambodian women opens by introducing major determinants of domestic violence against women (Yount and Carrera 355 360). The contributing factors include the following: A Woman s Social and Economic

Beowulf Archetypal Hero

Beowulf: The Man, the Legend, the Hero

Beowulf is an epic poem whose earliest surviving copy was written in 1000 A.D. The story consists of three thousand one hundred and eighty two lines that follow the life of the title character. The original author of the epic poem is unknown mainly because it started as a verbal tale passed down orally through the ages. Finally someone wrote it down in a document now called the Nowell Codex. The epic tale is centered on Beowulf and his actions in an adventure to repay a debt owed by his father to Hrothgar, a Danish king. A gargantuan monster that is terrorizing Hrothgar s mead hall is Beowulf s target and Beowulf sails across the sea to aid his father s ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Going in to the swamp himself showcases Beowulf s leadership style. He wants to make sure all of his men return home safely, and the only way to do this is to only endanger one life, his own. This also lends itself to the idea that Beowulf is in his line of duty for glory. Here in this scene he takes the approach of If I want it done right I will do it myself. As the leader of this band of Geats he wants them to live to recant his legacy in the off chance of his death; to be immortalized in history as a brave warrior who died in the line of battle. The swim down to Grendel s mother s lair exemplifies Beowulf s super human qualities. It was said that he swam for the better part of a day, a deed which by human standards is impossible. Once at the bottom he faces the swamp hag in a battle which once again ends with his victory. When has a story ever had the hero die in the middle of the book? The fact that Beowulf just happened to see the giant sword on the wall shows that he is a hero because things go his way. As one of the oldest written stories of a warrior hero, Beowulf was the basis for all male warriors from this point on. Everything goes their way, the adversaries are defeated, and a celebration is had. The men on the surface had given up on Beowulf. They walked away from the edge of the swap

Examples Of Existentialism In As You Like It

SHAKESPEAREAN PLAY PHILOSOPHY The play to be reviewed is As You Like It, written by William Shakespeare. The prevailing philosophy throughout the play is existentialism. What is existentialism? Existentialism can be defined through its ontology. Ontology is the study of the nature of reality and is also called the theory of reality. The ontologyof existentialismcan be discussed in under concepts of man and existence. In the concept of man, existentialists believe that man is not bound by any antecedent human nature but rather free to determine its own nature. It opposed those deterministic theories (ex. inborn talents, predestined path of life, etc.) and favoured principle of indeterminism. To be a man is to be undetermined, to be free.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... According to Heidegger, man can only reflect his real self to his self. Man cannot be what he is not. He can be what he is already: his existence. He further says that humans were temporal beings. It finds itself finite because he was bound in time and the space he was experiencing. And when man finds itself finite, his existence would be doomed. But by his free will, he can overcome these threats to his existence. For Heidegger, on the one hand man is creator of his own experience and on the other hand, he is subject of his experience. If man accepts the responsibility for developing his own being then he has true human aspects in his personality. In the concept of existence, existentialists differentiate the verb to exist from the verb to live . For them, existence means a full, self conscious, responsible and growing life. Existentialists divided the concept of existence between authentic existence, and inauthentic existence. A man can live in an unauthentic existence by being a member of a group that is absorbed only in things and details of everyday life. But a man can live in an authentic existence by living through his choices. As quoted from Marcel, to exist means not just to be present to my own aware ness
