Macular Degeneration in Two Forms Essay

Macular Degeneration in Two Forms

Macular Degeneration is a disease of the eye that gradually causes loss of a person s central vision. Approximately 1.75 million Americans suffer from vision loss associated with the disease (All About Vision 1). The leading cause of blindness in people over the age of 60, Macular Degeneration, exists in two types (National Eye Institute 1). Both the wet and dry versions of the disease have similarities in risk factors, but differ in symptoms and treatments. Although the causes of each type of the Macular Degeneration are different, the risk factors are essentially the same. The wet form of the disease is caused by small blood vessels that grow beneath the retina. The blood vessels leak blood and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The dry form is broken down into three stages; Early, Intermediate, and Advanced (National Eye Institute 3). In the Early stage, people have several small or few medium yellow deposits under the retina called drusen. This stage shows no symptoms or vision loss. During the second stage, Intermediate, more medium or even large deposits happen. As this happens, a blurred spot can develop and more light could be needed for reading. Lastly, in the Advanced stage, a breakdown of light sensitive cells and tissue causes the blurred spot to enlarge and darken. In this latter stage, facial recognition is unlikely unless the person is extremely close. Either form of Macular Degeneration can only be detected by thorough eye exams. The exam should include visual acuity, which measures sight at varied distance intervals. Also, dilation of the eyes will allow an ophthalmologist to check the retina and optic nerve. An instrument called a Tonometer will measure pressure within the eyes (National Eye Institute 6). Treatment options exist for the wet type; however, the dry has none. The wet version of Macular Degeneration can be treated with laser surgery, photodynamic therapy, and direct injections in order to try to slow the progression. Laser surgery is used to subdue the leaking blood vessels. During this procedure, healthy blood vessels and tissue may inadvertently be damaged.

Schindler

Good morning/afternoon, today I will be analysing a scene from Steven Spielberg s master piece film Schindler s List. Movie extraordinaire Steven Spielberg, who is a world renown director of countless memorable films, show cases his incredible skill and compelling power towards the audience, without using any dialogue in the most pivotal character development scene in Schindler s List. Referred too, by the audience as The girl in red . Before I delve in to the depths of this scene and why it is so significant to the film, it is important I outline the story of Schindler s list. This film is all about Oskar Schindler; a successful business man, womanizer and member of the Nazi party. A true story, about a man making a living using Jewish workers in factories, producing anything from pots and pans too brass tank ammunition shells, during the height of WW2. Throughout the start of the film Schindler s humanity is questionable leaving to audience to ponder whether or not he is a hero or just another Nazi using the Jewish people as an easy and free work force. This all changes about a third of the way through the film, when the audience witnesses our questionable hero s fundamental change of heart for his Jewish working force and as discovered later on in the film, he spends more money than he can make trying to save them. What the audience witnesses, is of course the scene I am analysing. During a horse ride with Schindler s partner, he stops on top of a hill looking down on a

The Chrysanthemums Setting Essay

The setting of The Chrysanthemums by John Steinbeck had a heavy hand in the development of the plot and characters in the story. The setting shows how some of the characters will react to certain situations. The setting shows us the character s way of life, how they eat, sleep, and go about everyday. The setting also shows us how the characters will help develop the plot. The plot and the setting go hand in hand. To have one, but not the other, would be impossible. The setting gives the plot a backdrop to work with, meanwhile the plot gives the setting a purpose. The setting of The Chrysanthemums by John Steinbeck is a ranch in California probably during the late 1920s. Knowing that this takes place in California and during the 1920s, as the great depression was starting, tells us that people are relatively wealthy and well off. Along with some sights of the depression creeping up. The setting also shows that Elisa is a honest, hard working, and caring person. Elisa goes and tends to her flowers everyday and makes sure they are healthy, she cares for her flowers and loves them. When the traveler asks her for one of her chrysanthemums to give to one of his customers, she does so. When she does this she tells... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The time period made it so the traveler had to travel to get money. The traveler was forced into trying to persuade Elisa to let him fix something for money. Elisa finally gives him a pot to fix after he says, ...It s nice, just like you say. Only when you don t have no dinner, it ain t. when they are talking about night time. He ends up guilt tripping Elisa into giving him work. Elisa being a kind person gives him work. This shows that the depression infuenced the traveler into begging and Elisa into giving him

My Parents Bedroom

In the short story, My Parents Bedroom, written by Uwem Akpan, the most defining role of literacy that sticks out is symbolism. The images that are engraved into readers brains are ones that have deeper meanings than what we initially see on the surface. The story is told through the eyes of a little girl named, Monique, who is only nine years old. It is told in first person point of view so that the reader feels as if he/she is actually experiencing the situations first hand. The symbolism in the story, My Parents; Bedroom, illustrates the day to day struggle of living in Africa during the genocide. Symbolism is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Both the black dress and the perfume are symbolic and ironic. They were both things that Papa loved, as well as Maman and that night their love came to an end. In order to protect their children both parents know what they must do. Papa who the previous night had watched Tonton Andre kill his wife, knew what would have to be done to ensure the safety of his children, he must also kill his wife. Although one cannot tell the difference between a Tutsi and Hutuwithout an ID card, the fighting between the two groups was dangerous to all. As Papa lands the machete on Maman s head Monique realizes what was being hidden from her all day. I begin to think of Maman as one of the people in the ceiling. It s not safe for her to come down yet. She s lying up there quietly, holding on to the rafters, just as she must have been last night when the man in the yellow trousers attacked me. She s waiting for the right time to cry with me. (351) Maman died to protect her people, her kids, and her husband. This shows how terrible life during the genocide was, innocent lives were taken because of religion. Maman wanted to keep her family safe and her people that were in the ceiling and that s what makes her death symbolic. Most would run, get out as fast as they could, but she stayed and took the punishment as if it were owed to her. When they ask you, say you re one of them, OK? Is Dating Past

Is Dating a Thing of the Past?

In today s modern era, dating has evolved into a social concept where two people spend time in various ways. From formal dates, to online chat rooms, there are many options for interaction. As time moves forward, basic concepts of dating and how a relationship should develop have been modified. With modern concepts being applied to old textbook ideas, dating has developed with technology, spending time with one another, and how dating has transformed over time. Dating should not be considered old, it should be considered reinvented.

Dating for several years was defined by the term going steady . This meant only being with your significant other for a long period of time to determine if the romance will be a lifelong relationship. During the 1930 s, steady relationships had developed as a stage between casualness of dating and marriage. When a steady stage had formed, they dated only each other, which could last for months or maybe just a week or even years. This bond was marked with meaningful rituals, for instance the sharing ... A Heartbreaking Genius Book Report

A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius is the memoir of Dave Eggers. It specifically deals with the passing of his parents (within a very short time of one another) and his responsibilities dealing with raising his little brother. His overall style in this book is VERY casual. He is the epitome of a writer who writes the way he speaks . The novelis more like an extended internal monologue with himself rather than a story. I wouldn t say this novel has the most incredible plot sequence but it does do a praiseworthy job in carry the reader through the mind of a troubled young man. This is passage (and there is much more to it) is one of the reasons why I love Eggers so much. He uses the mode of an interview to insert ideas and stories into his memoir that didn t necessarily have a natural place. At first, he explains that he has become a finalist for MTV s Real World and he has made it to the last interview round. He must sit down with an MTV exec for an interview. However, as soon as the interview starts, I, as a reader, have my suspicions. The interviewer doesn t ask any questions and instead Egger s just launches into stories about his childhood. The reader is left wondering how all of these stories fit into an interview for The Real World. The interviewer also... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Eggers deems all of these anecdotes book worthy but he can t find a space for them. He breaks through the fourth wall and tells the reader that. He tells us that it s not really an interview at all. Admittedly, this was a little confusing to me at first. I was very much taken aback when Egger s just comes right out and says exactly what he is doing. The interviewer is no longer seen as important and the storyline of Egger s being a potential cast member of The Real World no longer seems important either. In fact, a few pages later Eggers says that he wasn t chosen from the show and then he quickly moves

Abuela called this zero because she didn t feel of any value to Costancia. I ll show you why Abuela felt like she was worthless. Connie did not want anything to do with her grandmother. She didn t want to be seen with her.Abuela didn t want to buy a jacket for such a short visit.Instead, Abuela wore a big, puffy jacket.Connie did not approve of Abuela looking ridiculous. Clearly Costancia was valuing Abuela by her exterior and not the inside. This made me feel bad since I ve done it in the past. Later in the church,Abuela was in the alley lost, looking for her seat.Costancia

Spinal Cord Injury ( Sci )

Spinal cord injury (SCI) can be dated back to the Egyptains, who described it as an ailment not to be treated (Sarhan, Saif, Saif, 2012 p .319). SCI victims had no hope for a normalized future and were confined to wheelchairs and experienced poor survival rates because of the demands of care. Advancements in emergency care and rehabilitation practices increase neurological function to the spine which has increased the SCI victim s changes of survival and return to normal locomotion. The spinal column can be divided into 31 segments and comprise seven cervical, twelve thoracic, five lumbar and five sacral vertebral segments which protect the spinal cord(Sarhan, et al. p. 319 320). The nerves of the spinal column relay biological information to and from the brain by ascending and descending tracts. A SCI occurs when acute trauma is generated to the spinal cord. Significant pathology and pathophysiology damage blocks communication between the brain and the rest of the body. A person s motor skills, autonomic functions, and sensations are affected by the initial injury. The higher the injury occurs on the spinal column, the more dysfunctional the person may become. The primary injury determines a given patient s neurologic grade on admission and thereby is the strongest prognostic indicator (Dumont, Okonkwo, Verma, Hurlbert, Boulos, Ellegala, Dumont, 2001 p. 254). Secondary injuries can occur from vascular, cellular, and/or biochemical changes at the injury site.

When using this linear function, we can see that the function is somewhat accurate for the years 1956 1972. Unfortunately in other years, the linear function is not a good representation. Because of these differences, the linear equation found is not a perfect representation of the given data.

Developing a Function with Technology:

After further examination, a new function must be formed to better fit the data given. This function which I now believe fits the data well is the quadratic function. I believe that the quadratic is a good fit because the data seems to take the same shape as a quadratic, x and y values both rise in a gradual way.

The general quadratic function is as follows:

Using technology we can find the values of all variables: a , b , and c

Technology has found the following variable values.

These values result in the following quadratic equation;

The following is a graphic representation of the new function found and the given data. The new function found is much more accurate when comparing to the linear function found earlier.

The following table holds the values of the given data and the values found using the quadratic function found earlier.

This is the best fit because as we can see from the graph it fits most points

Prioritizing It Project Management Portfolio

Prioritizing IT Project Management Portfolio Prioritizing IT Project Management Portfolio The realities of shrinking IT budgets and increasing dependence on IT in organizations in recent years has resulted in a situation in which there is an intense competition for resources needed to execute and complete IT projects. According to Ross (2007), the shrinking IT budget in the face of increasing demand has brought new pressures to the IT function. To gain approval and funding for projects, IT departments must demonstrate that such new project will either result in cost saving, increased sales, or result in greater enterprise wide efficiency (Ross, 2007). Vernon Wayne Howell Research Paper

Vernon Wayne Howell was born in August 17, 1959 in Houston Texas. His mother was an unwead tennagaer when she had Howell. In his early childhood he claims he was abused by his mother s partner. When he was eighteen he dropped out of high school to pursue a career as a rock star. When he was in his twenties he caused his familyto get kicked out of their church, the Seventh Day Advent, because he was questioning the way the leaders interpreted the Seven Seals of the bible. Soon after being kicked out of the church he found the Branch Davidians and joined the religious group. Once in the group he changed his name to David Koresh. When Koresh joined the compound the leader was sixty eight year old Louis Roaden who was believed by the followers

Differences Between New England Middle And Southern Colonies

There are three different colonial regions, New England, The Middle Colonies, and The South. Each of them consist of different states. New England includes New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island. The Middle Colonies have New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware. The South consists of Maryland, Virginia, North and South Carolina, and Georgia. They all differ when it comes to economic, social and political factors. New Englandhad the most developed economy and culture. They had poor soil full of stones, hilly lands and long winters made agriculture hard for them. They heavily relied on the ocean, using it for water powered mills, harbors, trading, and fishing. However, because they couldn t go the agricultural way, they relied on the middle and southern colonies to provide their food. Their rapid growth led to towns and schools. Their social life consisted of town meetings, after their town halls were built. They had a local self government and most of the freemen participated in this at some point, although the wealthy freemen hardly represented their people. Compared to... The region is where trade dominated the coast and farming dominated the hinterland. Their social lives were not very set, because most of the states declared themselves independent. In political matters, New York was important as a political center, at one time it was even acting as the nation s capital. Things were very different in the south compared to these middle

Nfl Backfield Analysis

With the NFL Draft in the books, teams have the majority of their players for next season. This time of year, coaches nationwide are planning and deciding how to fit new and existing players together in the best possible way.

With this planning comes the depth chart, where things get interesting. Fans may see rookies swipe veteran roles, as some familiar faces could see the bench a little more than a season ago. Training camp and the preseason are still months away, so projected depth is mostly speculation at this point.

But there are a couple teams who don t have clear starters yet. The most difficult position group to divide reps for is the backfield. Let s examine how the five most crowded backfields could play out in 2017. Position battles, workhorses, splitting carries, committee approaches, it s all involved...enjoy!

Mark Ingram Finally eclipsed the 1,000 yard rushing mark last season. The words reliable and steady come to mind.

Alvin Kamara Athletic and versatile rookie who lit up the field in two seasons with the Tennessee Volunteers; big question mark.

Prediction: If Peterson looks anything like his old self in Week 1 against the Vikings, he could take most of the workload as the season goes on. However, he s very unlikely to get that chance and will likely be spelled often by both Ingram and Kamara. I d say Kamara won t have a big role, as Sean Payton will have him learning from the best until both aging runners can be done away with. In dynasty leagues, Kamara is definitely worth a pick up, but both Peterson and Ingram will come with unworthily high price tags come fantasy draft time. None of these runners stand out from the pack in any one category, but Peterson definitely has the most potential.
