The Theme Of Environmentalism In Frank Herbert s Dune
In undoubtedly one of the grandest science fiction epics of all time, Frank Herbert s Dune focuses on a stunning blend of politics, environmentalism, adventure, and mysticism. Recipient of the Nebula Award and Hugo Award, Dune explores the effects of a changing global climate most prominently. The role of science fictionisn t so much to predict the future, rather than to astound the audience with its possible leading avenues. Dunehas a sparse ecosystem and Herbert explores for instance how the limitation of water would transform the planetary ecology and possible sustenance for human life. Thus Dune, stands as an early example that explores environmentalism and ecology, effectively communicating these novel ideas in the 1960 s to a new and young audience and generation. Herbert focuses on the untapped human potential of transcending the primary state of living conditions, however with a plethora of limitations and consequences. Particularly interesting, the novel as a whole serves as an allegory for the dangers of environmental shortages and damages. Although some may presume the novel Dune as confusing archaic misfit for a science fiction novel, these romantic critics are often too dogmatic in their provincial ideologies. Several warnings are presented throughout the course of the novel on ancient dangers such as the greed of mercantile corporations, the intertwined complications of religion and politics, conflicts of feudalism, and most prominently ecological fragility.
Aristotle s Polis
Aristotle examined many people around him and analyzed the way they lived their lives. He found out that some were able to live good lives, but some did not achieve that goal. He also noticed that they all did different things with the purpose to achieve happiness. Some ended up dissatisfied with their lives through their journey; however they all wanted a good and happy life. Thus the highest good for a human is happiness. Furthermore, as Aristotle explained in his book the Nicomachean Ethicshappiness is an activity of the soul accord with virtue. What Aristotle is trying to point out in his statement above is that happiness is an activity that is connected to every other activity in our lives. Also, that happiness is not achieved through
Summary Of The Movie Critique Of Hidden Figures
Movie Critique of Hidden Figures
Introduction
Here at NASA we all pee the same color. (Cherin, 2016). This is a quote from a movie by the name of Hidden Figures which was released in 2016. It is about a group of black women who work for NASA. The women were helping NASA send a man into space using math, engineering, and programing. They are also trying to prove that black people were just as capable as white people in learning the subjects of math and science. The film reenacted how American s in the 1960 s lived. The Space Racewas at its peak in popularity during this time and the United States was desperate to put a man in space for the Russians. Hidden Figures shows how the women worked to overcome the stereotypes which are placed on them due to their skin color and gender from society. The movie also highlights several social problems that society faced in the past and their continued existence even today. The movie incorporates multiple social problems such as racism, sexism, and educational inequality. This is shown by revealing how whites would treat blacks during the 1960 s. Many whites during this time felt that blacks should be separate but equal. However, Civil Rights activists disagreed and felt that blacks should be allowed to go to the same bathrooms, water fountains, and schools that whites attend. The social problems shown in the movie still affect people to this day. There are several current initiatives which support and encourage equality for black

Substance Dualism is the idea that the mind and body are distinct from one another. It argues that the world consists of two independent substances, the mental and the material, each with its own unique and defining characteristics. René Descartes, a French Philosopher, first introduced The Conceivability Argument for dualism in his Sixth Meditation hundreds of years ago and it has been criticized ever since. In this argument he proposes that the mind and the body are separate substances with independent existence because he can conceive of his mind existing in a universe that consists of no material things. In this paper, I will argue that even though Descartes argument is valid, it s not sound due to the strength of objections that arise from the weaknesses in its structure. Argument: ... Hume s law states that if we can conceive of something then it is logically possible. Leibniz s law on the other hand says that if X has a property that Y lacks, X and Y are different. Descartes starts the argument by stating that as a thinking thing, he can conceive existing without a physical extended body. Due to Hume s law, anything that he can conceive of is therefore logically possible. Using Leibniz s law, if it is logically possible that X (mind) exists without Y (body), then X (mind) is not identical to Y (body). In conclusion, Descartes states that as a person with a mind he is not identical to his physical

Race And Reality In The Adventures Of Huckleberry Finn
Imposture and Identity, Fiction and Reality are the real dilemmas of Mark Twain s America in The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn
The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is one of Mark Twain s most celebrated novels. Although it is viewed as a continuation of another work of his, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer(as is referenced in the story itself), the book has managed to gain its own success and to have a fame of its own thanks to the subtle but effective manner in which it managed to bring forth into discussion a great number of very important themes, such as culture and civilization, values and morality, race and identity. During the course of his journey, Huck adopts role after role. [...] But in each case, he casts off the role that he plays. We get to know Huck, in other words, by who he is not, not who he is. Huck s identity depends, therefore, on whatever it is that keeps those adopted roles from sticking. (Thomas 281) That is not, however to say that Huckleberry Finn will not acquire a true identity, as with the progression of the story, from the very start but more evidently from the Wilks Farm adventure, the reader gathers glimpses of what the boy may become as we witness his thoughts and evolving opinions. One may assume that that which keeps Huck from becoming an impostor through his many roles is the same factor which will determine his later and final
Analysis Of John Milton s Paradise Lost
In his epic, Paradise Lost, Milton entertains the reader with his version of how one of the greatest falls of humanity occurred. Although many would consider God or Adam and Eve as the main characters in a story like this, the main character of this epic is truly Satan. Satan is shown as a strong and powerful character who is completely overwhelmed with emotions which create a type of hell in his mind; even when he is in heaven, he cannot escape his true life. Satans desire for vengeance on God s creation not only unveils the personality of the protagonistbut it also offers a glimpse into what the character Adam is like.
The first quarter of Milton s great epic truly revolves around Satan s emotions and desires. Milton does his best to help the reader find love for an evil character; he even mentions Satan crying in hopes of having the reader feel sympathy for him. Satan s emotions are not only triggered by his feeling of being below God but also his belief of being lower than The Son as well. The huge role the devil plays throughout the story can be observed in one of the first descriptions of the beast. Milton compares the size of the sinner to an island by describing that, The pilot of some small night foundered skiff, deeming some island, oft, as seamen tell (Pg 15 lines 204 206). Not only is Satan a giant, but he also has a strong personality which can be observed in his actions. After falling from heaven, Satan even makes a bold statement stating To do aught
Lemony Snicket s A Series Of Unfortunate Events
Lemony Snicket s A Series of Unfortunate Events , is a film directed by Brad Silberling, that is action packed, and with a plot that is rather... unfortunate.
The film begins with the Baudelaire children, Voilet (Emily Br owning), Klaus (Liam Aiken), and Sunny (Kara Hoffman), being told that their parents had been killed in a fire that also destroyed their mansion. A very depressing start to a very depressing film. As, the children have no close relatives they are then transferred to their beloved Count Olaf. When they first are left with Count Olaf, it is quite apparent that he doesn t care for the children at all, but only wants the huge fortune that he will inherit if they are dead.
I personally found this film to be a very gloomy ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When the characters were moving for some reason, it really felts as though you were in the film watching the events revolve around you. The special effects were also well executed, such as the scene at Aunt Josephine s house where the house is dangling over the cliff. If is wasn t so ridiculous, you might even believe it to be real!
Another great part of the film, was the sound/music. Dramatic music was used a lot, which made sense considering it was a pretty dramatic film. However, in the parts of the film that aren t so dramatic, the calm music is also very well used, and strongly reminds me of the Nemo soundtrack.
Brad Silberling, the director of the film, has done many other films other than this one. His most famous include, Casper (1995), City of Angels (1998), and Land of the Lost (2009). Something that all these films have in common, is that they all contain big stars, and are often either a hit, or miss. An example of this, is Land of the lost . It had a budget of 130 million Aud, and had a box office of around 89 million Aud, not a great movie to say the least.
Overall, Lemony Snicket s A Series of Unfortunate Events, was an average film with good actors and cinematography, that was let down by the down right depressing and unrealistic plot. I give this movie 2 and a half, out of five
