Examples Of Diction In The Tempest

Shakespeare, in this passage from The Tempest, uses diction and imagery to illustrate the ambiguous line between man and monster. This monologue is famous for its poetic language and the fact that it is Caliban who performs it. Caliban is seen throughout the play as a monster. However, in this passage, the notion that Caliban is purely a monster is challenged. In this passage, diction is used to create tone. In the beginning of the passage, Caliban reassures his companions, Stephano and Trinculo, of the noises that frightened them. Caliban uses words such as sweet and delight to describe the sounds. These words demonstrate the enchantment Caliban experiences for the island. Moreover, he says that the noises make him sleep and that they cause him to dream. The word dream is one that implies an illusion, deceptive and elusive in nature. This attributes a degree of poignancy to Caliban s words. Finally, at the end of his monologue, Caliban says that after he wakes, he [cries] to dream again (III.ii.135). His words show misery. The feelings expressed in the excerpt display a more sensitive side of Caliban.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

In the passage, Caliban describes the sounds of a thousand twangling instruments (III.ii.129). Twangling instruments include stringed instruments such as the lute or harp. The image produced by this phrase is one of an almost ethereal nature. Caliban s words reflect his fondness for the island as well as a level of sophistication. Furthermore, Caliban describes his dreams where the clouds...open, and show riches (III.ii.133). Caliban dreams of power and wealth, aspirations that are shared by other characters of the play. The image produced by this phrase is an almost noble one. The imagery in this passage portrays Caliban s eloquence and attachment to the

Twelve

Ruled

The year of terror is one of the most complex and misunderstood periods in the French Revolution. Palmer, in his book, Twelve Who Ruled, however, takes this period and skillfully turns it into a written masterpiece. The book is narrated from the point of view of someone with an omniscient knowledge of the subject matter, who is reflecting back on the period from the outside. The book tells the story of a brief moment in history when twelve men (Robespierre, Barere, Saint Just, Couthon, Lindet, Carnot, Saint Andre, Prieur, Varenne, Herbois, Scholles, and Duvernois) ruled France; even though they were technically under the control of the Convention. Palmer begins by giving the reader an overview of Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He gives a very lurid account of the most influential people on the committee, namely Robespierre, Varenne, Carnot, Saint Andre, and Saint Just. In the first pages of the book, it is obvious the Robespierre will play the primary role in the book, that of the chairman, the most powerful man on the Committee of Public Safety. This can be seen when Palmer compares the other member to Robespierre. After the personal history of each of the twelve men, Palmer moves right in and starts discussing how and why the Committee of Public Safety was formed, and how it came to power. After this, he maneuvers circumspectly into how the committee used this power to purge the nation of counter revolutionaries, who needed but offend the sensitive ears of Robespierre to be executed. He then moves along chronologically to the height of the Committee s power and eventually describes the decline and eventual demise of the reign of terror. This is signified by the execution of Robespierre, who was designated as the instigator of the terror. It is in his death that the terror culminated, and along with it, this book. This book is considerably effective as a narrative biography of the Twelve Who Ruled. Through his eloquent use of detail and his elegant ability to paint a superb picture which incorporates both the lives and actions of the men in power and the essence and accomplishments of the Committee of Public Safety as a whole he tells the story of the Reign of Terror.

It is difficult to make me uncomfortable. I feel that most individuals of my generation feel that way. Desensitized because of the information sensory overload that our symbiotic relationship with technology has created. The individuals, lack sensitivity. My generation as a whole, that s another story. Somehow, my generation became the most desensitized at the same time it became the easiest to offend. This is why I love the poem Lady Lazarus by Sylvia Plath so much. In the midst of the 20th century Plath touched on topics of depression and suicidein such a shameless way that, it is capable of evoking emotion most modern forms of expression fail to reach. To do this Plath masterfully uses imagery that creates a sense of repulsion and dread that only work to add to the general tone of the poem. Additionally, the idea of a top 40 artist using holocaustic imagery to pontificate about how sad they were about the on goings at the club feels quite absurd, not to mention inevitable outrage of social justice warriors for the use of holocaust imagery in the first place. Lady Lazarus made me uncomfortable. It did so, because out of all of media that my generation has available to us, this poem is one of the most relatable and accurate depictions of a personal struggle with depression I ve encountered. Nearly 60 years ago, Sylvia Plath, fearlessly used controversial imagery, and masterful metaphor and allusion to illustrate the personal, and subtle nuance of depression in a way

Cryptic Plc Executive Summary

According to the calculation of ratios, the performance of Cryptic plc can be analysed as following. For the profitability ratios, growth in gross profit and net profit both have negative values. Whilst operating profit growth is 8.2% (2013 2014) and 11.5% (2014 2015), net profit growth is 17.9% and 14.4% respectively. It can be seen that Cryptic plc has had a poor performance in recent years. Reason can be come from the increase of costs incurred. Although the growth rate declined between each period, the company still made profit rather than loss. From the net profit growth, the company may start recovering from the downturn position and it is seeking for fundraising to support business operations. The current and quick ratios have infinite

American Idol Essay

American Idol

That rendition was impressive, but you do not look like an American Idol; however, we will give you one more chance. Welcome to Hollywood! A person with a mediocre voice that is not stunningly attractive would have a harder time advancing to Hollywood on American Idol. As the judgessay, an American Idol should be a distinct person with an exceptionally fantastic voice. Culture is the training or refining of intellectual faculties and the way of life for a particular people. There are tears and screams as contestants, one by one, get through to the next round. Along the way to fame, the contestants on American Idol receive mean, nasty and often degrading criticisms from the judges. Those who are not the most attractive seep through the auditions based on fantastic singing and have a much harder time pursuing their hopefully destined career compared to a naturally attractive singer. The drama that is stirred up during the auditions and throughout the show is why people tend to watch.

Image is a big factor on American Idol because whoever wins the competition receives a million dollar contract with a well known recording producer. A record producer would not want a less than celebrity caliber person representing his or her label because image is a huge factor in our society and they know for a fact that someone not photogenic would not sell. They want someone who has some unique aspect to their appearance or personality that would attract people to buy their album. Since the recording producer works for Simon, it is partly his duty to make good decisions about who he says goodbye to, and who he puts though to the final thirty. Perhaps this is why Simon is so critical and mean to people, but that is what America loves about him. Since America loves first impressions and style, they will base their favorites on typically what they see from the show. Different people in our society will enjoy different things about different

Essay on Reflections on Leaders In a Connectional Church

In January 2010, I was privileged to be able to take a class at the Presbyterian Center in Louisville, KY called Leaders in a Connectional Church . The course aimed to show how the leadership of the Presbyterian church connected with the presbyteries and congregations that make up its body through working intensively with the General Assembly Mission Council (GAMC) and researching how the current structure had come to be. My assignment was within the Executive Director and Communications offices, which I was excited to be a part of, given my background in radio and broadcasting. Much to my surprise, however, the GAMC had only within the past 5 years started to reach out in a multimedia fashion, and most of the groundwork was still under... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This is an important distinction because today, corporate good too often means good for the management /stockholders on a short term basis , disenfranchising both the customers and employees . These concerns were present from the beginning of the incorporation period, of course, as could be seen clearly through the labor union disputes and ruthless tactics of corporate leaders even in the beginning of corporate culture. But the perceived total good of the corporate organization emphasis on efficiency, fund raising, salary for church staff, and availability of expert leaders to a wide range of people outweighed the devaluation of the individual and the fragmentation of the body that were not fully observed until after the corporate structure had been in place long enough to be tradition . The changes to the church structure were worked by a series of intelligent, creative and charismatic leaders in the Presbyterian church, both in response to and imitation of the culture of the day. At its root, the model of the church as a corporation pushes a hierarchical model of ecclesiology, keeping the same oligarchic control in the hands of a small number of people. It does so intentionally, but also attempts to balance out the hierarchy by making it representative leadership, allowing for the

Social Media Vs Growing Up In The 90 s

Growing up in the late 90 s is very different than growing up today. Back in the 90 s parents were not very interested in what kids were into. Adults and Children had clearly different behavioral and social roles within society. One s years as a child was often thought to be a unique period when they were allowed to live carefree and enjoy the simpler things in life. Being a child meant not yet needing to worry about bills, work, and other social responsibilities all the while enjoying the security blanket that the adults in their lives served as. In vast contrast, being an adult was very different. There was a lot less glitter and fun as an adult. An adult was someone who worked hard to pay the bills and take care of their kids. Adults were the ones who set the examples that kids would eventually grow to follow. Nowadays, the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It helps them stay in the know. It makes the feel more in touch with their kids too. Even with this upcoming election, the Presidental canidates are acting quite immature than typical. They are constantly back and forth with he said, she did. As time continues to move on, adults will become more and more like

The Gospel Of Jesus Christ

When sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ, we must have a heart for God, because if we have a heart for God, we can have a heart for His people. Through evangelism, we can reach the non believers in effort to convert them over to Christianity, so they can experience the love of Jesus Christ. Evangelism is the core, the heart that leads non believers to salvation. As they repent and confess their sins, they become a part of JesusChrist family, and the power of the Holy Spirit is imparted into them (Doerksen, 2012, p. 3). Believers in many nations look to Christianity as the foundation upon which to build their societies (Yung, 2011, p. 44), and the same was true during the time period of Apostle Paul. Apostle Paul speaks to the Corinthians and Colossians of the importance of sharing the Gospel, and to make sure Christ always gets the glory. Therefore, when he addresses the people of Corinth, he explains that his authority comes from the Holy Spirit. Paul wanted the Church of Corinth to rely on the power of God, and not on their spiritual gifts they had received. His intention was not to persuade them with eloquent language, but only through power of the Gospel.

In II Corinthians 4:1 4, Paul explains to the people of Corinth, because of God s mercy we do not give up, we keep pushing and preaching. In addition, he explains there is nothing deceitful about his preaching, but the Lord has blinded certain individuals, and the only way the blinders will be removed is

Brainwashing In 1984 Research Paper

The society we live in relies heavily on the presence of the media and the influence of other people. In many situations it would be fairly simple for the government to brainwash a society into thinking something had or had not happened. This brainwashing is depicted in the book 1984, where a society has been captured by a government that decides every move and thought in their daily lives. Both the world of Oceania and the world we live in now are heavily controlled by the media. Media plays a major part in the way everyone thinks, talks, and remembers instances from the past. In some situations the past is able to be changed if there was someone that took the time to sit down and change every article that ever came out about the incident. If for instance the government wanted to change a piece of history form over 100 years ago it would be simple for them. They would just have to change it in books and videos to say what they want it to say and then eventually overtime the memory of what had actually happened would die out with the older generations and they would have successfully removed a part of history. This form of brainwashing can be used in many ways, to forget something that did happen or to place a memory in someone s head of something that didn t... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
