The Impact Of Spanish Rule On Puerto Ricans Today

The Impact of Spanish Rule on Puerto Ricans Today

What was Puerto Rico like under Spanish rule, and how important is that rule to the formation of the Puerto Rican people today? To answer these questions, we must take a look at the history of the Spanish and their colonization of the island of Puerto Rico.

As we know, Puerto Rico was a colony of Spain found by Christopher Columbus on November 19, 1493, and remained a colony of Spain for the next 400 years. But the interesting fact remains that Puerto Rico was not truly settled by the Spaniards until almost fifteen years later! In 1508, Juan Ponce de Leon came to settle the land of Borinken, and founded the town of Caparra. This was the start of a proud people that would ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The few surviving Tainos took off to the mountains for survival. The first two important elements of whom and what makes up Puerto Rican people, is here. The Taino Indians are 1/3 of the element. The second element, were the Spaniards.

The Spanish now were the main people of the island, but there was only one problem now. There was no more gold to be found (which was the original reason most of the Spaniards came), and Puerto Rico had to be productive to Spain in some fashion.

Facing the fact that there was no more gold, the Spaniards looked to the rich land and soil for the next way that Puerto Rico could help the Kingdom of Spain. They raised cattle, and they planted staple crops, but sugarcane was the bread and butter so to speak. The only problem was that they could only trade with Spain for a long time and Spain grew their own sugarcane, too. But let s not jump ahead of ourselves here. What was needed was a labor force to work these fields, and the Taino Indians were living in the Hinterlands. There was no way they were going to work those fields.

This brings us to the third main element that makes up the Puerto Rican people. This third main element, were the African slaves that were brought in. In fact, the three main elements were all together on the island of Puerto Rico in a relatively short time span. The proof of this is

Intelligence Failures And The State Of Foreign Involvement

Intelligence Failures and the State of Foreign Involvement in Benghazi, Libya

The primary issue in researching the incident in Benghazi is the varying information that was reported on as the event itself, and later the investigation, unfolded. Secondarily, political biases play a large role in the determination of what is fact as the event took place only two months before the 2012 Presidential elections. Intelligence and cooperation with the host country are vital to the security of embassies and its personnel worldwide. Without it, events like those in Benghazi are likely to occur again. The months following the Arab Spring were a turbulent time in across North Africa, but especially in Libya. In November 2011, a month after the death ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The excessive amount of weapons held in civilian hands following the end of the Libyan civil war would later pose a direct threat to those in the consulate and CIA annex on September 11th, 2012. There were four primary players in the events in Benghazi. The U.S. Department of State (DOS) played a major part as it is the agency that controls the vast majority of U.S. foreign affairs and controls all of the embassies and consulates worldwide. Two DOS employees, Ambassador Chris Stevens and Information Management Officer Sean Smith, perished during the assault on the compound. Five Diplomatic Security (DS) agents provided security for the building during the events of that night. In addition to the five DS agents, at least three 17th of February militia members provided security for the compound the night of the attack (Kennedy, 2012). However, depending on what is reported, they were either armed or unarmed at the time of the event (Kennedy, 2012; Zakaria, Cornwell, Al Shalchi, 2012). Additionally, approximately two miles away, there was a CIA annex base, equipped with a Quick Response Team (QRT) that could be dispatched at a moment s notice to help stave off any violent conflict. The two other American deaths were the ex Naxy SEALS, Glen Doherty and Tyrone Woods, who were part of the QRT (Department of State [DOS], 2012). An Al Qaeda affiliate also had a presence in the country at this time, finding it easy to establish a foothold in a country rocked

Anna Karenina Essay

In Anna Karenina, Leo Tolstoy presents marriage in a realistic sense, marriage is not an easy institution; couples must work through the rough patches in order for it to be strong; he also presents passion as a force that can have a positive influence, but simultaneously presents passion as a factor that can have a corrupting power on a person s life. These two couples, Levin and Kitty and Vronsky and Anna, are compared throughout the course of the novel. Levin and Kitty differ from Anna and Vronsky because they do not communicate in the same ways. Kitty and Levin try to resolve issues as they arise, so that they do not create a bigger issue. Another difference is that Ann and Vronsky are sheltered from society because of Anna s position... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... They are completely open with each other, no matter how difficult the subject is to talk about. Anna and Vronsky are completely different with respect to their communication. They are described as having a dark and powerful spiritual bond (Merezhlevosky, pg.772). Because their relationship is based solely on love, it is harder for them to communicate effectively. Rather than take the time to solve a problem, Anna and Vronsky blame each other for the problems. Anna is described as getting more and more heated and thereby betraying the cause of her irritation (pg.326). Anna simply gets angry and as a result cannot have a conversation with Vronsky. This is quite different from the Anna we are introduced to early on in the novel. She is portrayed as a sweet, charming woman. This kind of attitude is not at all what is expected of Anna. Vronsky is does not handle situations well either. At one point in an argument, Vronsky leaves. He is described as having announced his departure (pg.584). Unlike Kitty and Levin, Anna and Vronsky try to avoid each other when an issue comes up. Because of Anna s position as a fallen woman, she and Vronsky lead rather different social lives than do Kitty and Levin. As Anna and Vronsky s relationship develops and becomes public, their interactions with society become dulled. At one point, Anna wishes to go to the theatre; however Vronsky and vises her not to because society

Eminem Poetic Devices

At one time or another, every one of us has been the underdog, facing a challenge that does not seem achievable , given a task we re not expecting to complete, or even racked with self doubt when we just might succeed. Eminem s Lose Yourself is a dramatic, catchy, and inspirational song that involves plenty of poetic devices. In Eminems song the poetic devices allusion, rhyme, hyperbole and metaphor are used to advance the theme you will succeed if you never give up on your dream . This song was written to motivate anyone to pursue their dream and to never give up no matter what happens.

First, Eminem uses allusion to help us picture the process of his career in the making. He used this poetic device to help compare himself ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... During the song Lose yourself in the last stanza Eminem wrote I m like a snail comparing himself to being slow like a snail. At that moment Eminem s career was not flowing how he would have liked it too, everything was going downhill. But Eminem did not stop no matter how hard the situation was, he did not stop there, he would not stop pushing until his dream became true. The following line says I ve got to formulate a plot/or I end up in jail or shot . This shows that he definitely does not want to give up, he does not want to end up in a bad situation. He wants to create himself a plan so that he could have success with his dream and that is what he did. Even though he was stuck and was moving slowly, Eminem stook to his plan and did not give up and that is what brought him too where he is

He ignores Martha in a way that hints at the deep love he has for her.

Martha s mean bitterness is her way of proving to everyone and her self, that she has control. But in reality she has very little control over her life; she is trying to live through her husbands eyes, living up to her father expectations, and drinking heavily. She does not have much power, because her fate is so tied up in the men around her.

From the start of the play, the reader is lead to believe that Martha has the other hand and she is the most powerful in the relationship. Being mean, brutally honesty and cynical makes people to believe she is powerful. On a night similar to the night of this plays, George and Martha create a son. This is a figment of their imaginations, to hold together their failing marriage. The rules to keep the son alive with in them, is to never speak of this son to any one else. Compliance Does Not Equal Security

Compliance Does NOT Equal Security

WRONG Being Compliant Does Not Mean Your Business Is Secure

INTRODUCTION

Frequent news reports about company data breaches leave many people believing that these companies simply aren t spending enough time and resources to deal with information security. In many cases, companies that are breached have been told that they are compliant with some standard (e.g., PCI, HIPAA, ISO 2700x, and SANS CSC). They believe that because they are compliant, they are also secure. Unfortunately, nothing could be further from the truth.

Compliance usually comes with a list of control objectives. When objectives are complete and followed, your company should be complaint with a particular standard or legislative requirement. However, simply checking the boxes for each control objective doesn t mean that you ve actually improved your overall operational security or reduced your company s risk. Managing compliance does not translate to managing risk, at least not from an InfoSec perspective. The biggest problem with equating compliance to security is that it implies that there is a time when your company s team can focus on their regular jobs and do something more important. In the real world, security never stops and it s never complete. Regardless of whether you ve ramped up your security e orts, your business needs to be constantly vigilant. If you experience a breach, simply having that check mark showing you re compliant isn t enough.

Ebay Strategic Analysis

Executive Summary

This report seeks to evaluate the major issue facing eBay with regards to its international strategy. This will be done through the analysis of eBay s competitive environment using the Porter s 5 forces and positioning in the industry using the BCG portfolio matrix. Following which, we will proceed to identify the sustainable competitive advantages of eBay using the resource based view of the firm. The core competence of eBay will also be discussed. Through an overview of the above mentioned analyses, we will propose recommendations to address the problem faced by eBay.

In addition, eBay would preferably choose a webhosting option that is reliable and offers round the clock customer service since people conduct business over eBay round the clock.

Next, there is a moderate threat of substitute services. More and more offline companies are tapping on the vast potential of the online market through the creation of their online retail sites. For example, if someone wants to get a Dell computer, he may choose to go to Dell s online store to purchase it. However, the uniqueness of the online auction site is that almost everything under the sun can be listed for sale. If a person is looking to buy something special, he can more often than not find it listed on eBay. Lastly, there is a great intensity of rivalry among the competitors in the industry. Because of the potentially lucrative market in Asia, there are many competitors wanting a slice of the pie and that includes search engine giant, Google. In China, Alibaba owned Taobao is already providing intense competition by providing zero listing costs and providing customer service catered to the needs of the local population[2]. In Korea, Gmarket is also providing intense competition by continuously introducing new marketing initiatives such as the lucky lottery where buyers may be able to purchase an item for 10% of its retail

Many environmental factors and stressful events played a role with my son. Farrinton, 2006; Granic Patterson, 2006 said that traumatic experiences and delinquent peers play a huge role in understanding antisocial personality disorder. The number of antisocial behaviors exhibited in childhood is the single best predictor of who will develop an adult diagnosis of ASPD, and the younger the age at which problems start, the higher the risk (Robins, 1978). This was so true with my son. Also, Lahey, Loeber, Burke, Applegate, (2005) stated that children with oppositional defiant disorder towards authority figures usually begins by age 6 years old, followed by early onset conduct disorder around age 9 are most likely to develop ASPD as adults. Gathering and asking all the pertinent information is going to be vital as a clinicians to make proper diagnoses. Hooley, Butcher, Nock, Mineka, (2017) cautioned clinicians regarding diagnosis of personality disorders and said there are more misdiagnoses in this category of disorders than any other and said they are not as sharply defined as they are for most other diagnostic categories. Therefore, the clinician must exercise more judgement in making their diagnosis than is the case for many other
