The Quiet Place Poem Summary

The poem, The Quiet Place, by Evelyn Lau expresses the feelings of paranoia, fear, and confinement one may face while being trapped within four parallel walls. The setting takes place at a Psychiatric Assessment Unit in Vancouver General Hospital. This is significant for the poem because it showcases the emotions many patients face while being constantly watched through a monitor that is scrutinizing their every movement. Likewise, in the poem, Evelyn Lau takes upon the persona of a girl who is admitted at the hospital and has been assigned to Quiet Room #4 and feels confined. She is constantly paranoid, hence the small noises that appear louder then they really are and the observation camera that seems to follow her every movement. Likewise,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These noises set a disturbing mood and showcase the constant paranoia the persona is facing. Additionally, the observation camera further increases the feeling of insanity because the persona feels trapped within a room and the feeling of someone constantly watching engulfs her. Similarly, the simile, The observation camera blinks at the flower of blood wilting on the ground puckered as an old woman s lips the signature of a nurse stealing life through a hole in the patient s arm, creates an image of a nurse taking blood from the persona while droplets of blood drip from her arm. This is a significant simile because it represents what the persona feels regarding doctors and nurses and how they are supposed to save her; however, each time a droplet of blood hits the ground, they drain her from her life. Likewise, a flower is supposed to represent peace and beauty, but in the poem it is shown as a decaying plant whose petals are drowning in blood. Moreover, the line Naked feet, creates an image of vulnerability and weakness because underneath the hard exterior of shoes lay fragile

Local Museum Case Study

During our audit of your financial statements, my firm reviewed that your current internal controls over the cash admission fees are weak and leads to numerous exposures and possibilities to the loss of the cash received from the members. It is apparent that there is no controls to confirm whether the entrance admission fees collected from non members by the two clerks are fully accounted for. It is important for the board of directors of the Local Museum to impose stricter internal controls rules to overcome some of the following weaknesses. Risks of Cash Payments: Payment of the entry admission fee in form of cash to the clerks is exposes the organization to embezzlement risks. Since, there are no other controls associated with the collection of cash. Untimely deposits: in addition, the fact that the cash is delivered to the treasurer who counts the money in presence of the clerk accumulates then bank it on Friday afternoon is further exposed to embezzlement. However, if the board is not willing to adopt other payment forms, it could use a cash register where upon payment the non members should issued with a stamped cash receipt and a the duplicate left with the clerk. The cash receipts log should be compared to bank statements and posted to the general ledger

Lab #6: Preparation of 2 chloro 2 methylbutane an Sn 1 Reaction

Purpose

The purpose of this experiment was to prepare an alkyl halide, 2 chloro 2 methylbutane by reacting 2 methyl 2 butanol (t amyl alcohol) with hydrochloric acid. Alkyl halides are of wide interest because they are widespread and have diverse beneficial and detrimental impacts .The overall reaction is given below:

Procedure

1 ml of 2 methyl 2 butanol was measured using 1 ml syringe and transferred into a 5 ml conical vial. 2.5 ml of highly concentrated Hydrochloric acid was then slowly added while the vial was constantly swirled. After mixing alcohol with HCl the vial was capped with a screw cap and gently shaken for about 10 ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

For this particular reaction calculations were straight forward due to 1:1 stoichiometric ratio with an excess of acid. Using physical density constant, the volume of 2 methyl 2 butanol was first converted into grams of alcohol. The grams were then converted into moles of alcohol using its molecular weight. Using the reaction stoicheometry, the moles were then converted into moles of chloride (product). Finally knowing the molecular weight of the product allowed to convert grams into moles.

Calculating mass of 2 methyl 2 butanol:

Density = mass/volume mass = density x volume = 0.815 (g/ml) x 1 (ml) =0.815 g

Moles = grams/ MW = 0.815 (g) / 88.15 (g/mol) = 0.00925 moles

Using 1:1 stoichiometric ratio for product theoretical yield estimation: 0.00925 moles x MW of chloride (35.45) = 0.328 grams of product

Percent Yield = Actual yield / theoretical x 100% = 0.228 (g) / 0.328 (g) x 100% = 69.51 %

Discussion

It is not uncommon to have a percent yield less than 100% as was observed in our experiment. Imperfect percent yield can be interpreted that the condition were not optimal and could be improved. Despite careful measurements some component will still be lost during transferring between containers. One way to get a better percent yield is by minimizing transfers. A low percent yield could be a result of evaporation

Biography of Abraham Maslow

Once in a generation, and only a few rare instances in a millennia, a certain designation of academic and /or scientist enters into the pursuit of knowledge that captures the epitome of makeup and living the dynamic of life to such a prolific magnitude that the world is revolutionized in their wake. Abraham Maslowso completely documented and achieved a level of understating of the causes of human events that his work effectively captivates the struggle of human life and achievement. His theories on the constitution of human needs provide an explanation as to just exactly why people do the things they do, and demonstrate the integral forces behind human behavior. His pyramid is an ubiquitous reference to the needs of human beings, and... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, a deeper question also struck him as worth pondering he sought to know the latent motives, the inner desires, and the unmet needs that drive human beings to act in the ways that they do, to perpetrate unspeakable atrocities, and act with a casual disregard for welfare of their compatriots. Despite growing up with a sense of comraderie and a common bond shared with other jewsih children who society regarded as inferior, Maslow had few actual friends. Consequentially, he invested a majority of his time in the spending of countless hours immersed within books and libraries, and these durations of a perfect loneliness, marked by the discovery of knowledge and introspection into his own person, rendered the young Abraham s cognitions ever the more pensive and curious. Whilst attending high school, Maslow s academic pursuits come to an even greater magnitude of fruition, as he became the editor of his high school s physics and latin papers, and became more intersted in the applied sciences (physics reference). Maslow then proceeded to attend City College of New York in 1926. Making his first foray into a possible professional career, Maslow began taking night classes concerning legal studies, but almost immediatley cancelled due to its profound monotony. He transferred to Cornell in 1927, but was forced to take leave after only a semester, due to poor grades and a lack of

Although the word Akasha has been popularized by the vampire movie Queen of the Damned it is actually a Sanskrit word translating to sky or open space . The word is used in Buddhism, Jainism, Hinduism in addition to Paganism. Because the word is used in several different belief systems and because of the nature of it s meaning in each, it is a difficult word to clearly and accurately define.

In Buddhism the word is associated with both limited and endless space. In Hinduism Akashameans ether, and is the essence of all things and the first of the material elements from the astral world. This is an unseeable, unfathomable energy that is present in everything. The other elements or Tattwas, in order, are Earth, Water, Fire and Air.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Akasha s power of limitlessness potential and timelessness prevents spells from being lost and from being irreversible. It acts as a reserve and safety net, though that does not mean those of us who practice Magick can be careless or undo spells without any sort of consequences.

Akasha is associated with a sort of raw and primal energy that extends into everything, but has no form or substance itself. It is sometimes described using imagery of a void or black hole that contains energy but has none itself. The image of Spirit may be highly personal, and while meditating on it, it is best to not use external stimuli as it may influence the deeply personal and unique understanding each individual has.

Because Akasha is associated with the spaces in between and not material in itself, it is not strongly associated with specific herbs, minerals, symbols, animals or other correspondences. It is typically associated with the colors black or dark purple however some traditions associate with white or even ultraviolet. Many Pagan traditions associate the four elements with Cardinal directions, however Spirit is associated with all of them as well as up, down, in, out and all other potential

Campbell Soup Company Analysis

The name of the company that I am researching is Campbell Soup Company. Campbell Soup Company is a food processing industry that sells a range of high quality canned soups, simple meals, beverages, snacks, and packaged fresh foods. As a part of the company s broad portfolio of brands, Campbell also makes many other products such as SpaghettiOs canned pasta, Pace Picante sauce, V8 beverages, Arnott s biscuits, and Pepperidge Farm baked goods. It is headquartered in Camden, New Jersey. According to the Campbell Soup Company2017 Annual report, Campbell SoupCompany recorded sales of $7,890,000,000. Under the company s Consolidated Balance Sheets, the company recorded $7,726,000 of total assets. Campbell Soup Company has a total of 16,500 employees.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The company is financially not doing well right now and the company has recorded a Net Operating loss for three years now. I think the company is not financially secure because of how unstable US economy can become. During the last American recession in 2007, which did not end for a few years ago. large amounts of jobs were cut worldwide and those individuals remained unemployed for long periods of time. Recession decreases people s purchasing power. If consumers income is down, their demand will decrease which will lead to a decrease in company s profits. Since Campbell cannot control the economy, recession, the global market, worldwide cuts in jobs, a decrease in demand, and people purchasing power are all major threat to profits and net sales. In addition, consumer loyalty and the attraction of new consumers are also threat to the Campbell Brand. From doing previous research, Campbell Soup Company s core consumers are the baby boom generation. This is problematic because the company is doing a poor job at targeting Millennials. According to Forbes s Jenna Goudreau, the company is struggling to maintain relevance with Millennials. Business experts predict that if Campbell Soup Company fails to increase sales with the Millennial group, Campbell s

Human Intelligence Can Be Increased Due At Exercise

The beginning and an end. The start and the finish. Once something begins, it will eventually come to an end. But, that true, does everything in the universe actually end? Numbers; a start with no finish. Numbers, something so simple, yet so complex. An infinite creation of the human mind subdued by our unmeasurable human intelligence. This is all capable due to the human brain. The brain is the most complex and unique organ in the human body. Some even considerable it a muscle. Similar to muscles, your brain can be trained and worked for better functionality. But, did you that there s a direct connection between exercising and increased intelligence in humans? In this paper I will be backing up my statement that human intelligence can be increased due to exercise. I will also give a view on the opposite side, using research that hypothetically disproves the idea that human intelligence can be gained through exercise. Then, I will be evaluating my claim, backing up my point by applying reason, utilizing the four tests of an argument and taking advantage of my critical thinking skills to validate my claim. Lastly, I will be concluding and synthesizing my argument. According to a couple studies exercise and intelligence have no connection. Some even suggest that exercise has negative effects on human intelligence. The first study was done by Kaycee M. Sink, M.D., M.A.S., of Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center and her colleagues, evaluated whether a 24 month physical activity

Transfection Lab Report

Transfection of pCas9 GFP with HEK293 cells Introduction Transfection is the insertion of plasmid DNA into eukaryotic cells. Transfection is used to look at the expression of a gene inserted in a cell. For this laboratory, the eukaryotic cells used were HEK293 cells. 293 cells are derived from human embryonic kidney cells. The reagent used to transfect pCas9 GFP into 293 cells was polyethylenimine (PEI). PEI is a cationic polymer and is the transfecting agent used to introduce pCas9 GFP into the 293 cells via endocytosis and thus releasing the DNA into the nucleus. OptiMEM was also used for the transfection of the cells; it provided a biological environment to the eukaryotic cells, thus increasing the rate of transfection. Following the... Wells 1, 3, and 5 H were used as blanks; they only contained 40 μl of IP lysis. The results obtained from the spectrophotometer were used to create the graph and obtain the equation found in figure 3. The equation was used to find the concentration of the protein, which is 3.45 μg/μl. Figure 4c shows two bands obtained from the Western blotting performed on GFP; the bands were compared to the protein scale (Figure 4a). The first band is at 25kDa and the second band is at

Analysis Of Duffer Brother s Stranger Things

The extract chosen is from the beginning of the television series Stranger Things (2016), directed by the Duffer Brothers, and follows the main characters: Mike, Will, Dustin, and Lucas. Before this extract, there s an introduction to the main characters, in keeping with the suspenseful movie genre, showing them play a gamecalled Dungeons and Dragons (D D). This introduction follows a presumed scientist, the main characters playing D D, and the beginning of Will s disappearance. This sequence was chosen since it s an introduction to characters, plot, and has good use of film elements and cultural context. A cultural analysis is going to be done through the historical lense via the Cold War and through the social lens via D D and its connection... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In order to incite suspenseful feelings and include elements of Sci Fi, cinematography and sound design were used. The fact that there isn t sound or dialogue in the sequence and that the monster is never shown greatly increases the scene s suspense. Sound design was utilized to create suspense because the monster is solely heard with over exaggerated growling. Cinematography created suspense by using shots that have low key lighting from eye level angle, and sometimes dramatic high angles, tilting the camera for an upside down POV (Figure 3a). Since the scientist can see what s chasing him, but we can t a mysterious suspense of the unknown is created. The directors and cinematographers intended to make shots suspenseful by focusing solely on distinct parts of the scientist s body, such as his face (Figure 3a), and then pulling into a long shot to show his lower torso being lifted up (Figure 3b). Immediately after that long, suspenseful sequence, the sequence transitions to a serene, rural neighborhood sprinkler. This demonstrates a purposeful discontinuity, in true thriller fashion, with many fluctuations in

Empire State Building Research Paper

The once legendary Murray Hill, continues to run the best view of the Empire State Building. As residents understand, the location from East 34th to 42nd Street and from the East River to Madison Avenue represent genuine wealth and top notch New York citizenship. With the Chelsea portion of Manhattan extremely near, the enriched beauty of the luxury condos and prewar buildings uphold their prime along with brilliant landscaping and conveniences. Marray s Wharf started this luxurious reputation, after a Quaker merchant named Robert Murray moved into the area from Pennsylvania. During the mid 1700s Robert Murray and his family relocated to New York with no fear of success. He began his journey as a member of the Society of Friends, and the patriotism of his family continued throughout the Revolution during the late 1700s ultimately, spending moments entertaining the legendary likes of George Washington and the genre of the British.
