Sports is a language that is universal. Authors often write stories that are about sports because people can relate to them. They use sports to enhance the meaning of their content and make it more interesting to readers. Sports Writing is writing that just happens to be about sports. Sports Writing tells a story. In the articles, The Gangster in the Huddle by Paul Solotaroff with Ron Borges, and, Mavericks by Alice Gregory, the authors use sports to help them develop, and make an interesting story for their readers. Description is very important in any kind of writing. Both authors use sports to help them become descriptive and make the reader feel like they are actually part of the story. In the very first paragraph of Mavericks, Gregory gets very descriptive. She describes the faintly smell of saltwater, diesel fuel from probably surf vans and trucks and weed from the people driving those diesel vehicles (2013). Right off I get a sense of where she is and the people that she is most likely surrounded by. She also describes the humungous waves called... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Tone determines whether the reader will be interested or not. For example, if an article is overly scholarly than the reader might get bored. Or maybe that s the kind of writing the reader likes. Gregory uses a personal and nostalgic tone. She recalls the times that she used to surf and work at the surf shop. She gets really personal when she talks about how she used to pee in her wetsuit because it was the easiest way to keep warm (2013). Her talking about surfing in this descriptive manner allows the readers to feel like they ve surfed before even though many people reading the article probably never have. Solotaroff and Borges used an unsympathetic tone. They described in detail about the demise of Hernandez and at the end they call Hernandez a menace to society but, because he s rich and well known the authors think he will catch another break
How do people respond to crisis? There are many different ways people respond to crisis. We will examine three ways people respond to crisis: people hide from it, people ignore it, and people take action and stay calm. We will examine these three things with the help of the following passages: The Masque of the Red Death by Edgar Allan Poe; Scurvy at Sea from making History with Vitamin C by Penny Le Couteur and Jay Burreson. And finally Heroics Behind the Miracle on the Hudson written by Liana Stanley from The New American . So, once again we will see three ways people respond to crisis: people hide from it, they ignore it, and some people take action and stay calm. People hide from crisis. What is exactly hiding from crisis, and... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Let s look at an example of this. In the magazine article from The New American titled Heroics Behind the Miracle on the Hudson by Liana Stanley said The Captain remained calm and in control after the landing. As the occupants were escaping the sinking plane onto the wings and life rafts, Sullenberger retrieved the planes manifest, to be used to account for all the passengers. As we can see Captain Sullenberger took action, as the plane went down thanks to geese clogging the engines, he landed the plane on the Hudson River. Then he got everyone out of the plane before himself. He then grabbed the manifest which had all of the passenger s names and inspected the whole plane twice, to make sure no one was inside. Once they got off the wings of the plane and onto a boat he called role of all of the passengers. Captain Sullenberger was the last off of the plane, and he is a true hero. He managed everything responsively and calm. Finally, everyone reacts to crisis differently. Some people act scared and hide like price Prospero and his guests in the blue room. Others ignore it like some sailors. And very few act brave and calm like Captain Sullenberger did when he landed a plane on the Hudson River. Everyone can react differently in
Angela s Ashes is a memoir written by Frank McCourt discussing his and his families life while he was growing up. Frank and his family lived in a time where both America and Ireland were countries facing depression. The McCourt family also faced discrimination in both countries as well: in america they were discriminated against for being Irish, and n Ireland they were discriminated on for being Yankees. In my opinion the three most important themes of Angela s Ashesare: destructiveness of alcohol, importance of religion, and struggles of poverty.
During the whole book Frank s Father s abuse of alcohol is affecting not only himself but the whole family. When the family was living, in New York, with Prohibition in full swing, he thought he had died and gone to hell for his sins. Then he discovered speakeasies and he rejoiced. (McCourt, 3) Malachy McCourt would drink all the money he earned from working and from money he received from the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Frank has a negative idea of religion, Worse than the ordinary miserable childhood, is the miserable Irish childhood, and worse yet is the miserable Irish Catholic childhood (McCourt, 1) Frank s view of religion is affected by what he had to deal with such as his mother begging the Vincent de Paul Society for food and other necessities the family needed, as well as, having to present everything he thought was a sin that in reality was just so,ething every kid did. On the other hand religion also held a positive side in the family s life because it gave the something to believe in. For example, when the three children had died the family said they d be able to join them in heaven one on day. The church also gave Frank an escape where he could go and feel at peace by being able to pray. Religion bring both peace and negativity to the McCourt family but in the end religion helped the whole family have something to believe
Youth violence is one of the major concerns all over the world today. Youth violence is an unavoidable consequence in the 21st century and it cannot be stopped but it can be reduced. Youth violence involves young people hurting other young people. Youth violence typically includes teens between the ages of 10 to 24, but it can also begin in early childhoodage. Most common youth violenceare Bullying in schools, School Shootings, Childhood abuse, Suicide, Poor parenting, Pressure, Violent Tv shows, Media, the internet, social media, Violent games and much more. Youth violence can be found at schools, home, our neighborhoods and all over the places. Teen violence has made an impact causing many devastating incidents in our world today. Teens act on violence and no one answer to why and what causes teen violence.
Firstly, Poor parenting at homes can also lead children to violence. Parents attitude, language, and carelessness can also lead children to violence. Children learn from what they often see and listen and they don t know what is right and wrong, it is the parent s responsibility to teach them to their children. Parents attitudes can influence children to act on violence. Some parents are not aware that when they fight or use bad words in front of their children that their child is also learning and adapting what transpires around them. Also, poor parents cannot offer their children what they want. To get what they want some children begins to steal someone else s
There are several essential factors that contribute to the quality of life society enjoys today. One of these factors is the ability to produce crops such as corn, soybeans, wheat, cotton, and several others. On occasion these crops experience stressors. These stressors can be from abiotic or biotic factors. Biotic stressors mainly include insect herbivores, whereas abiotic stressor mainly include temperature and water or lack thereof. It is vital to understand how cropreact to these stressor in order to predict and possibly contradict the effect on the crops. When dealing with insect herbivores the outcome can be devastating. Insects can destroy large amounts of crops. To prevent insects from destroying crop, insecticides are used as well as transgenic crops are used. Abiotic factors such as drought can be more difficult. The total amount of semi arid land on earth is one third, and the rest of the land experiences unexpected drought occasionally (Fang and Xiong, 2015). This means that nearly all the crops in the world are at risk of experiencing some kind of water shortage. Due to these abiotic and biotic stressors, and extensive amount of research has been conducted and is still being conducted to minimize the negative effects. In the following sections will be an overview of the abiotic and biotic factors along with the crops response to each, as well as the genetic mechanisms studied to improve a crops ability to cope with these stressors. Crops response to drought
Warren Buffet Assignment The letter issued by Berkshire Hathaway Inc. is filled with a lot of information detailing the information that happened in 2014 and years prior. This letter comes on the 50 year anniversary and feature Warren Buffet and Charlie Munger s thoughts on the past 50 years and what they expect over the next 50. The introductory section of the letter titled To the Shareholders of Berkshire Hathaway Inc.: it outlines a general overview of the occurrences of the stock over the past 50 years and how it has increased dramatically, and also what they believed was the best way to show it has increased. Major Players The first Major section with a lot of Substance within the letter is The year at Berkshire. A part that... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I find this interesting because one would think that a loss of that magnitude in an industry where they claim to be its core operation at Berkshire Hathaway would seriously hurt the revenue and profits for the year. It s explained that because of the many streams of earnings that that is why they would expect profits regardless. The next section labeled Regulated, Capital Intensive Business has a very interesting segment about Berkshire Hathaway Energy that personally helped me learn something new. It s mentioned that one of the factors that allow BHE to be able to service its debt under all circumstances is that it deals with recession resistant earnings. It s a concept that I ve never actually thought about before. The idea that no matter how bad a recession in an economy is that the utilities BHE exclusively provides are things that are considered to be essential services. Moving on to the section titled manufacturing, Service and Retailing Operations it s said that he has not made his last mistake in purchasing stocks or business and that not everything works out as planned. This interests me because it s easy to think that Warren Buffet such a successful man or on a more broad term Berkshire Hathaway can do no wrong because of how successful it s proven
A satire is the use of humor, irony, exaggeration, or ridicule to expose and criticize people stupidity or vices, particularly in the context of contemporary politics and other topical issues. Like mockery or ridicule. In the pieces, my class read we saw a form of satire in every piece. In this essay, I will explain the types of satires I notices. As I mentioned in my opening paragraph satirecan be making fun of something or mocking it. In A Modest Proposal, the author mocked the poverty in Ireland during the 18th century, In the reading he says how he seen beggars begging and it was basically disturbing and disappoint to he came up with a proposal for it which was to eat the poor Irish children to eliminate poverty and hunger. He says
Have you ever watched or heard of the movie a christmas carol if not let me tell you about it. Then is a mean man who hates Christmas his name is Ebenezer Scrooge. In this story his best friend Marley will tell him he will be visited by three ghost the names are, the ghost of Christmas past, the ghost of Christmas present, and the ghost of Christmas yet to come. And after the story you could see the play or movie.
The first ghost that visited him was the ghost of Christmas past. What that ghost will show him is his errors of his ways, before and all the other Christmases that have happen and what has happened in his childhood. And what he did to people and others.
The ghost of Christmas present will shows him visions of other people
Strength is an asset most people seem to struggle building. Whether it be a lack of motivation, or simply not knowing where to start, it proves itself to be a taxing regime. The arms have many types of workouts to build muscle. However, before moving into the more complex ones, everyone must start with the basics. Starting off, it is good to find a dumbbell of comfortable weight that one can move freely with no issue. In three easy steps, the Bicep Curl is one of the best workouts to start building arm strength. The first step will be the stance, as posture and form are the most important parts of any workout. To start, make sure to have a firm grip on the dumbbell of choice, fingers facing upwards. Make sure the upper arm is tight to one s
Continuous aches that distract from daily life, burning sensation that slowly moves across the hip, and endless throbbing are all debilitating effects that come with hip surgeries. Other hardships include countless physical therapy appointments, an infinite number of anti inflammatory pills, multiple visits to the surgeon s office, and crutches or other walking aid devices. The patient s life may be impacted for a few weeks, a couple months, some years, or for their whole life. In fact, many people s lives have been affected. In just the past year, 200,000 300,000 hip replacements were performed in the United States ( Total ). Some people s lives are changed for the better, but there are others, a small percentage, of those who experience failed and unsuccessful hip surgeries. The ineffective surgeries that do occur, usually happen because... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There are problems that start occurring over time, but do not show up at the beginning. In a hip replacement, a patient s artificial hip may begin to loosen over time. This doesn t occur as much anymore due to the advancements of technology, but overtime people s artificial hip would slowly detach and cause a lot of pain ( Hip ). In addition, patients are not able to perform high impact sports because wear and tear can happen ( Total ). On the other hand, those who undergo hip arthroscopies usually do not have to make changes to daily life, but that is all based on the damage present (Byrd). There are certain rare cases in which people have had to quit high impact sports or activities, but usually 85 90% of patients can play sports and return to daily life at the same level they did previously (Coleman). This proves that there is a variety of long term outcomes depending on the case, surgery, and person. All of the information the patient receives from the surgeon will let them take the most appropriate decision based on what they want their future to be
While all deception requires secrecy, all secrecy is not meant to deceive. This clear and concise quote was expressed by Sissela Bok, a Swedish American philosopher and the daughter of two Nobel Prize winners. See deception is a concept that is practically glorified lying to grasp an advantage upon something. In The Crucible we see many depictions of deception. Nearly all coming from Abigail. Abigail is a decisive teenager who seeks people s pain in order to get her way. Abigail seeks not only power, but she also seeks the love and marriage of John Proctor. Abigail s character nature consists of nearly total deception.
Our first example of decisiveness given from Abigail is her first lie. The lie took place early in the novel and stated ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Abigail has the troop agree to carry on with the lie, despite the chaos they re causing throughout the town of Salem. The girls seem to do whatever is needed to gain power for themselves. An example would be when they re in the court and the girls simultaneously speak and take part in actions. The girls make it look like one woman is causing hem to do so, implying she is the witch that bewitched them. Other examples would include the constant lies the girls displayed in order to surpass links in the power chain . The girls gain absolute power when they reach the ability to prosecute anyone who challenges them. Abigail and her troop attempt to overthrow the court, and when they do they realize anyone who tries to stand in their way can t impose even the slightest threat. Any refusal will find the citizen as a culprit in the midst of the court. The girls found ways to corporate protesters with witchcraft. This led the protester to find themselves hanging by a noose or thrown behind bars. Once others realized the consequences, they gave up their efforts to fight Abigail and her troop. Abigail s reign ends when she finally leaves town with all of her Uncle s
This essay will reflect my thoughts on chapter 9. In brief this chapter deals with how the ears allow us to be able to hear and process sound. When I first think of sound I think of the frequency. This makes me think of songs that I listen too in order to determine it s a high frequency or a low frequency. I ll be able to determine the amount of hertzthat are in songs on the radio. I do feel that it would be hard to determine because most of that music is reordered, hearing people sing a cappella would be easier to determine the amount of hertz present. I know what hertz are, but I m still not sure how they are actually determined? Are they sounds just determined by our brain if we have unimpaired hearing. How would someone like my brother with a whole in his earbe able to determine frequency? When I think about pitch the first things come to mind are instruments. This reminds me in middle school if you wanted to a part of the band, you got to test each instrument. I always had a fascinating with a flute, which had high a frequency and high pitch. Another instrument was a trombone; this had a low frequency and low pitch. This helped me understand the difference between pitches. I also think about how humans and animals hear different frequencies. Someone my age in there 20 s would be able to hear the door bell ring, while someone in there 70 s may not hear it. This measures how over time our frequencies can. A dog on the other hand can hear very high pitched
