There is nothing that you haven’t seen in every other teen-romance-adventure, but we shouldn’t condemn it for that. All that and it’s still almost two and a half hours. The railways function well (the speeding trains are a character themselves), but the emotionless social structure in Divergent has a faux ambiance to it. The series was wildly popular and led to many later reincarnations. Woodley, who has done excellent work in The Descendants, has a captivating screen aura, which helps sustain a decent balance of severity in Divergent. And Abnegation is the faction that values selflessness. The fight sequences (of which there are far too few) are so poorly choreographed they are laughable and Kate Winslet is woefully under-used in her unexpectedly good performance as the wicked witch (oops, you know the drill!). The Erudite are the serious-minded scholars who wear conservative, dark blue. Basically, they're no fun, and Beatrice has a wild streak in her that she's been forced to suppress. While a conspiracy brews in the background, Tris, and the other fresh “initiates”, are tested physically and psychologically by their unsympathetic teachers Eric (Jai Courtney) and Four (Theo James), for a good amount of the movie’s running time. They all serve as nothing more than filler to the larger plot involving the smarty pants Erudite’s wanting to take over the leadership of the city from the Abnegation faction.
